Abstract:The large-sized power generation units of 600～1 000 MW have been widely utilized in engineering practices and the relay protection directly affects the safe operation of large-sized generators.The shortage or arguments on such protections were concerned and discussed in the following aspects,such as the configuration of turn-to-turn fault protection for stator winding,the setting of low-excitation and loss-of-excitation protection,the selection of current transformer(TA) for protection and neutral grounding method for large-sized generators,etc.

Abstract:In light of the most widely used pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power units (NPUs) in China,the interaction and mutual influence between grid-related generator protection of nuclear power plants and automatic security devices of power grids are analyzed,and the coordination and control principle between them is proposed.Based on the existing models for PWR NPUs in PSD-FDS,the dynamic performance of NPUs and power grids due to voltage and frequency disturbance are studied.Then the action performance of grid-related generator protection (such as the over-speed protection, over-excitation limitation and protection,abnormal frequency protection,and primary pump protection)and automatic security devices (such as generator tripping at a high frequency and load shedding at a low frequency) are analyzed,as well as the mutual influence and coordination between them.Finally,the coordination principle is validated with case studies based on an actual power grid.The principle can be used as a reference for the study of coordination control and parameter optimization for nuclear power plants and the power grid connected.

Abstract:The paper first analyzes the current main protection principles utilized in wide-area relay protection system, including: wide-area current differential protection, wide-area direction comparative protection and adaptive protection based on the wide-area information of the power grid. Contrary to the exiting problems, this paper proposed some suggestions. Then from the application point, the structures and the dividing methods of information domains for the wide-area relay protection system are provided. With the development of IEC61850 standard, Multi-agent technology and grid computing technology, the paper finally investigates how to apply them to the wide-area relay protection system. The paper provides the references for both the further researches of the wide-area relay protection and the encountered technical issues when applied to the actual power grid. © 2011 IEEE.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Plant is the largest installed capacity of power plants with complex auxiliary system. In this paper, the operation mode of auxiliary system in the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant is introduced, and some representative problems about the coordination of relay protection are raised and solved successfully.

Abstract:This paper firstly reviews the recent development in power system protection, with special attention paid to the transient based, wide-area and integrated protection, in order to look into future development of smart relaying protection for smart grids. Taking into account the demand and feature of development of smart grids, this paper mainly introduces current research on smart relaying protection in China. The paper further presents a transient based integrated wide area protection scheme, which outlines the advantages of future smart relaying protection. In the proposed protection scheme, the integrated protection relay incorporating a number of transient based protection algorithms running in parallel is installed at each substation in the protected network area and is responsible for the protection of all the power lines associated with the substation. Each relay communicates with neighboring relays at the remote ends of the associated line section to form an area relay network. A centralised wide area protection device with specially designed protection algorithms is responsible for the backup protection of the entire network through advanced communication with each integrated relay at different substation in the area. Protection algorithms within each integrated relay are divided into two types: these relays on the measurement of local information alone and these require remote information. When a fault occurs on the network, the protection algorithms based on local information alone is able to determine whether it is on its protected line section; the algorithms based on remote information will sent the locally derived information to the remote relays and the wide area protection device and receive information from the remote relays, comparison between the remote and local information will determine whether the fault is within its protected zone. The wide area protection device is also able to determine the actual fault location through the comparison of the information from all the integrated relays within the protected network and issues trip command to associated substations to isolate the faulted section.

Abstract:The design and setting of main protection for large-sized generator and extra-high voltage transformer aren't sufficiently based on the scientific simulation of stator winding internal faults at home and aboard. In most cases, the designers work on the project only by their own judgment and experience, along with outdated technology materials. The main protection design for generator and transformer should be quantitative and scientific after the internal faults simulation software has passed the State verification. The impedance protection isn't suitable for short-range backup protection for the winding faults of the large-sized generator and transformer. The specific status that the zero-sequence differential protection is seldom adopted at the stator winding of extra-high voltage transformer ought to be modified in China.

Abstract:The higher requirements of relay protection for large generator unit have been put forward along with the increment of unit capacity.In this paper the requirements for 1 000 MW unit relay protection,especially for the generator stator ground protection,were expounded,the conventional stator ground protection of external source injection mode was introduced,and the deficiencies in its application were analyzed.A complete microcomputer protection scheme of stator ground fault based on the balance principle was proposed as an improvement of above protection mode.In the scheme,the influence to protection of external source fault,PT leader breakdown,system harmonic etc.were considered,so the protection device can distinguish reliably the generator stator ground failure.

Abstract:Against the lack of scientific design method of main protection for generator at present, a new design view is presented in this paper. The design view entirely corrects the traditional configuration of main protection depended on the concept of protection, the experience of designer and the habitual configuration of other power stations. According to the view, the design of main protection scheme can be quantified. Firstly, the above method is based on the proper calculation of short circuit currents in stator windings. Secondly, the leading-out mode of branches at the neutral point of generator is determined by checking the sensitive coefficients of all kinds of protection scheme. Finally, considering the practical situation of generator and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of all kinds of protection, the final main protection configuration scheme is determined according to the design principle named advantage complementation and comprehensive utilization.

Abstract:Because of its hidden and harmful features,the hidden failure in relay protection system are very difficult to be solved and both technological and management means are needed.In this paper,the hidden failures are firstly classified into software,hardware and relay setting according to their origins.And then their origin causes and measures for avoiding or decreasing them are discussed in terms of technology and management.In the end,the influence of future power system,including digital transformer substation,wide-area protection and distributive generation,are discussed on hidden failures in relay protection system.It is concluded that the proposed classification method can be well adaptable to the development of power system and it is very useful to explore means for avoiding or decreasing hidden failures from two aspects of technology and management.

Then from the application aspect,both the system structures and the division methods for information domain in the wide-area relaying protection system are expounded. How to realize system fault-tolerance and optimization based on wide-area redundant information is also discussed. The paper finally investigates how to apply related information technologies such as IEC61850 standard,multi-agent technology and grid computing technology to the wide-area relaying protection system. Wide area information based wide-area protection,which achieves both the relay protection and stability control,has become the central issue of modern power system research,and will be the future of power system protection and control.

Abstract:In the light of the operation of Jiuquan wind power base in recent years, the new relaying protection methods for enhancing the accommodation and transmission of large scale wind power are proposed from the system perspective, including the criterion of flow fluctuation based on the statistical analysis, the flow transfer recognition based on the local information, the adaptive overload protection, the fusion of the protection relay and the emergency control. On the basis of theoretical investigation and simulation, a protection device is developed and the correctness of the new methods is tested.

Abstract:Three-zone distance protection and four-zone zero sequence over-current protection are traditional relay protection schemes used for tapped-lines that connect distributed photovoltaic, wind, and small hydro power sources into a distribution network. These protection schemes cannot quickly clear the faults that occur at the end of the protected line. A newly developed non-communication protection scheme for tapped-line and double-circuit line tested at Gansu Power Grid can significantly speed up fault clearing at the end of the lines, and achieve fast tripping for the entire line section. This protection scheme also shows advantageous results for distribution grid with distributed generation.

Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems

Abstract:This series of papers report on relay protection strategies that satisfy the demands of a strong smart grid. These strategies include ultra-high-speed transient-based fault discrimination, new co-ordination principles of main and back-up protection to suit the diversification of the power network, optimal co-ordination between relay protection and auto-reclosure to enhance robustness of the power network. There are also new development in protection early warning and tripping functions of protection based on wide area information.In this paper the principles, algorithms and techniques of single-ended, transient-based and ultra-high-speed protection for EHV transmission lines, buses, DC transmission lines and faulty line selection for non-solid earthed networks are presented. Tests show that the methods presented can determine fault characteristics with ultra-high-speed (5 ms) and that the new principles of fault discrimination can satisfy the demand of EHV systems within a smart grid.

Abstract:A virtual power plant aggregates many distributed resources. Its operation mode is complex and changeable. The distribution network with virtual power plants has great differences in power flow distribution under different operation modes, and the short-circuit current flowing through local relays changes frequently. It is difficult for traditional relay protection to adapt. Therefore, this paper first models the inverter interface distributed generation (IIDG) aggregated by virtual power plants. Then the phase difference between the fault component of the positive sequence voltage of the bus and the fault component of the positive sequence current of each feeder is used to construct a protection scheme. This scheme is not affected by the operation mode of the virtual power plant and can be accurately located under various fault conditions. Finally, a simulation example is built using PSCAD to verify the above method.

Abstract:Owing to existence of the turn-to-turn fault of a large-sized turbo-generator stator winding in practice, harmful results can be caused without the turn-to-turn short-circuit protection in the operational mode. The turn-to-turn fault ratio of large-sized turbo-generators at home and abroad are reviewed. By the quantitative design of the main protection configuration scheme for two 300 MW turbo-generators, the necessity of leading out two neutral points and installing the branch current transformer at the neutral-point side of a turbo-generator is proposed. And high quality protection performances can be supplied by the transverse differential protection and incomplete longitudinal differential protection for the large-sized turbo-generator. To implement above configurations in practice need fully efforts of relay engineers, owners and machinery workers.
