Abstract:The large-sized power generation units of 600～1 000 MW have been widely utilized in engineering practices and the relay protection directly affects the safe operation of large-sized generators.The shortage or arguments on such protections were concerned and discussed in the following aspects,such as the configuration of turn-to-turn fault protection for stator winding,the setting of low-excitation and loss-of-excitation protection,the selection of current transformer(TA) for protection and neutral grounding method for large-sized generators,etc.

Abstract:The paper first analyzes the current main protection principles utilized in wide-area relay protection system, including: wide-area current differential protection, wide-area direction comparative protection and adaptive protection based on the wide-area information of the power grid. Contrary to the exiting problems, this paper proposed some suggestions. Then from the application point, the structures and the dividing methods of information domains for the wide-area relay protection system are provided. With the development of IEC61850 standard, Multi-agent technology and grid computing technology, the paper finally investigates how to apply them to the wide-area relay protection system. The paper provides the references for both the further researches of the wide-area relay protection and the encountered technical issues when applied to the actual power grid. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Due to the continuous development of science and technology in China, technological innovations have started in various fields. In the background of this era, power companies have begun to build smart grids. As a key link in the construction of power grids, substations will inevitably follow the trend of smart development and become the focus of current power companies. However, relay protection determines whether smart substations can achieve efficient operation. This article analyzes the main points of smart substation relay protection, and draw the improvement strategy of smart substations on relay protection, which includes the protection of the transformer, voltage limit delay, and line protection, thus promoting a healthy development of smart grids in China.

Abstract:Because of its hidden and harmful features,the hidden failure in relay protection system are very difficult to be solved and both technological and management means are needed.In this paper,the hidden failures are firstly classified into software,hardware and relay setting according to their origins.And then their origin causes and measures for avoiding or decreasing them are discussed in terms of technology and management.In the end,the influence of future power system,including digital transformer substation,wide-area protection and distributive generation,are discussed on hidden failures in relay protection system.It is concluded that the proposed classification method can be well adaptable to the development of power system and it is very useful to explore means for avoiding or decreasing hidden failures from two aspects of technology and management.

Abstract:This paper firstly reviews the recent development in power system protection, with special attention paid to the transient based, wide-area and integrated protection, in order to look into future development of smart relaying protection for smart grids. Taking into account the demand and feature of development of smart grids, this paper mainly introduces current research on smart relaying protection in China. The paper further presents a transient based integrated wide area protection scheme, which outlines the advantages of future smart relaying protection. In the proposed protection scheme, the integrated protection relay incorporating a number of transient based protection algorithms running in parallel is installed at each substation in the protected network area and is responsible for the protection of all the power lines associated with the substation. Each relay communicates with neighboring relays at the remote ends of the associated line section to form an area relay network. A centralised wide area protection device with specially designed protection algorithms is responsible for the backup protection of the entire network through advanced communication with each integrated relay at different substation in the area. Protection algorithms within each integrated relay are divided into two types: these relays on the measurement of local information alone and these require remote information. When a fault occurs on the network, the protection algorithms based on local information alone is able to determine whether it is on its protected line section; the algorithms based on remote information will sent the locally derived information to the remote relays and the wide area protection device and receive information from the remote relays, comparison between the remote and local information will determine whether the fault is within its protected zone. The wide area protection device is also able to determine the actual fault location through the comparison of the information from all the integrated relays within the protected network and issues trip command to associated substations to isolate the faulted section.

Abstract:With the development of energy Internet, intelligent substation in smart grid has been developed rapidly, and the distribution layout of relay protection device has become an inevitable trend.In order to deal with the intelligent substation relay protection decentralized arrangement, information remote control and other issues, this paper puts forward local relay protection scheme for substation based on wireless networks for industrial automation (WIA).According to the characteristics of the substation, the industrial wireless communication system is applied to the local relay protection control station of substation, which can monitor the substation locally installed device.We develop the wireless communication module for substation, and carry out the laboratory test and field test, while, the experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve high reliable and real-time transmission in complex environment, which has a certain reference value for the follow-up study of local relay protection in intelligent substation.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Plant is the largest installed capacity of power plants with complex auxiliary system. In this paper, the operation mode of auxiliary system in the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant is introduced, and some representative problems about the coordination of relay protection are raised and solved successfully.

Abstract:DL/T 684—2012 Guide of Calculating Settings of Relay Protection for Large Generator Transformer （hereinafter referred to as the “2012 Guide”） has played a significant role in improving the correct operation rate of relay protection devices for generator transformers and ensuring the safe operation of electrical equipment in power plants. However， with the increase in capacity of individual generator units in China and the emergence of new faults， the “2012 Guide” has proved inadequate， requiring revision to better guide engineering practice. Therefore， this paper analyzes the problems in the “2012 Guide” and puts forward specific revision suggestions to address problems such as misoperation of generator differential protection under sympathetic inrush current， misoperation of false power-on protection under poor synchronous conditions， and tripping of gap zero-sequence current protection of main transformer before reclosing in the case of transient single-phase ground faults on the line. The suggestions can provide reference for the revision of the “2012 Guide”.

Abstract:The analysis of equipment record, defects and action events of relay protection and security automatic equipment has been carried out in the last decade since the establishment of an electric power company on the basis of relay protection relay protection statistics analysis and operation management module. It can be seen that the growth rate of security and stability control devices is the highest, which is mainly due to the large-scale grid connection of new energy sites; it should strengthen the operation and maintenance of capacitor protection, and stock up spare parts that are prone to frequent defects, such as triggering-power module of capacitor protection for FSC in the severe electromagnetic environment; the number of primary equipment faults and protection actions shows seasonal characteristics, most of which occur in windy, summer thunderstorm weather. The data-driven screening of familial defects, evaluation of operation and maintenance strategy for aged equipment and spare parts management have been actively explored to improve lean management.

Abstract:To solve problems existing in conventional transformer backup protection, such as increasing complexity of setting calculation, extending time delay of protection operation, and aggravating deficiency on sensitivity, a novel transformer local backup protection scheme and corresponding setting calculation method were proposed. Dual setting distance relays with forward and reverse direction operation characteristics were employed in each circuit breaker of protected transformer. Impedance setting of distance relays ensured sensitivity requirement, and selectivity requirement was satisfied through time setting coordination. So complexity of setting calculation for transformer local backup protection was reduced. However, operating speed of the new simplified local backup protection scheme still needs further improvement under some circumstances. Therefore, a substation area backup relaying scheme was designed. Digital startup information of distance relays in local substation was utilized to judge faulted elements and accelerate circuit breaker tripping. Case study results show that substation area backup relaying scheme combined with transformer local backup protection realizes fault tolerance ability and unification of selectivity, sensitivity and quickness.

Abstract:Abstract Combined with the current problems of the large number of professional systems for relay protection and the inability to collaboratively share data. This paper analyzes the current application of relay protection information systems. Through analysis of four key relay protection systems including OCS (Operation Control System), Protection and Information System, Wave Recording System, and Traveling Wave System, the core technical parameters are sorted out, and the XML-based (Extensible Markup Language) data specification and model fusion method, introduced the overall architecture of the information fusion relay protection intelligent management and control system, and designed the application function of the intelligent management and control system to realize the information fusion and intercommunication of multi-source heterogeneous systems to improve Power grid coordinated control and emergency response capabilities.

Abstract:The developments of both power system and electricity market ask for that the protective relayings, especially back-up protective relayings, can work more securely. The authors present a concept on aggregate protection,i.e., on the basis of keeping the independence of existing protective relayings the presented aggregate protection is such a protection scheme in which other protections’ and circuit breakers’ information related to a certain protection is used to improve its protective function and performance. Research results show that multi-agent system (MAS) is suitable to implement aggregate protection. In aggregate protection different action criteria are used to implement following functions: accelerating the action of nearby back-up protection to trip out the circuit breaker when miss operation of primary protection occurred; directly sending the control command to make the corresponding circuit breaker tripping out to clear the fault when existing protection became invalid; shortening the action time of remote back-up protection and achieving the effect similar to the action of circuit breaker failure protection for the equipment without circuit breaker failure protection when circuit breaker was in failure; distinguishing transmission line overload from its faults and ahead relieving the overload situation in company with control system. A preliminary scheme to implement aggregate protection is given.

Abstract:The design and setting of main protection for large-sized generator and extra-high voltage transformer aren't sufficiently based on the scientific simulation of stator winding internal faults at home and aboard. In most cases, the designers work on the project only by their own judgment and experience, along with outdated technology materials. The main protection design for generator and transformer should be quantitative and scientific after the internal faults simulation software has passed the State verification. The impedance protection isn't suitable for short-range backup protection for the winding faults of the large-sized generator and transformer. The specific status that the zero-sequence differential protection is seldom adopted at the stator winding of extra-high voltage transformer ought to be modified in China.

Abstract:A virtual power plant aggregates many distributed resources. Its operation mode is complex and changeable. The distribution network with virtual power plants has great differences in power flow distribution under different operation modes, and the short-circuit current flowing through local relays changes frequently. It is difficult for traditional relay protection to adapt. Therefore, this paper first models the inverter interface distributed generation (IIDG) aggregated by virtual power plants. Then the phase difference between the fault component of the positive sequence voltage of the bus and the fault component of the positive sequence current of each feeder is used to construct a protection scheme. This scheme is not affected by the operation mode of the virtual power plant and can be accurately located under various fault conditions. Finally, a simulation example is built using PSCAD to verify the above method.

Abstract:In the light of the operation of Jiuquan wind power base in recent years, the new relaying protection methods for enhancing the accommodation and transmission of large scale wind power are proposed from the system perspective, including the criterion of flow fluctuation based on the statistical analysis, the flow transfer recognition based on the local information, the adaptive overload protection, the fusion of the protection relay and the emergency control. On the basis of theoretical investigation and simulation, a protection device is developed and the correctness of the new methods is tested.
