Abstract:Because of its hidden and harmful features,the hidden failure in relay protection system are very difficult to be solved and both technological and management means are needed.In this paper,the hidden failures are firstly classified into software,hardware and relay setting according to their origins.And then their origin causes and measures for avoiding or decreasing them are discussed in terms of technology and management.In the end,the influence of future power system,including digital transformer substation,wide-area protection and distributive generation,are discussed on hidden failures in relay protection system.It is concluded that the proposed classification method can be well adaptable to the development of power system and it is very useful to explore means for avoiding or decreasing hidden failures from two aspects of technology and management.

Abstract:Due to the continuous development of science and technology in China, technological innovations have started in various fields. In the background of this era, power companies have begun to build smart grids. As a key link in the construction of power grids, substations will inevitably follow the trend of smart development and become the focus of current power companies. However, relay protection determines whether smart substations can achieve efficient operation. This article analyzes the main points of smart substation relay protection, and draw the improvement strategy of smart substations on relay protection, which includes the protection of the transformer, voltage limit delay, and line protection, thus promoting a healthy development of smart grids in China.

Abstract:To solve problems existing in conventional transformer backup protection, such as increasing complexity of setting calculation, extending time delay of protection operation, and aggravating deficiency on sensitivity, a novel transformer local backup protection scheme and corresponding setting calculation method were proposed. Dual setting distance relays with forward and reverse direction operation characteristics were employed in each circuit breaker of protected transformer. Impedance setting of distance relays ensured sensitivity requirement, and selectivity requirement was satisfied through time setting coordination. So complexity of setting calculation for transformer local backup protection was reduced. However, operating speed of the new simplified local backup protection scheme still needs further improvement under some circumstances. Therefore, a substation area backup relaying scheme was designed. Digital startup information of distance relays in local substation was utilized to judge faulted elements and accelerate circuit breaker tripping. Case study results show that substation area backup relaying scheme combined with transformer local backup protection realizes fault tolerance ability and unification of selectivity, sensitivity and quickness.
Study of Reliability Modeling for Relay Protection System in Digital Substations

Abstract:Compared with the traditional substation relay protection, the structure and content of relay protection system in digital substation have changed greatly and there is no standard model and method to evaluate their reliability. Based on the analysis of the constitution of digital substation relay protection systems, the information flow is divided into three kinds, which are time synchronization flow, SV flow and GOOSE flow, and their possible topology for each kind of flow is analyzed. Then it uses the minimal path sets algorithm to calculate the connected rate of three kinds of information flow, and uses series and parallel model to calculate the overall reliability of relay protection systems. At last the paper discusses the software realization of this modeling algorithm, and the example analysis shows that this modeling method provides effective means to evaluate the reliability of different schemes of relay protection systems.

Abstract:In order to meet the construction of regulation integration system and improve intelligent fault information analysis system of relay protection in power grid, this paper designs a practical implementation scheme for relay protection and intelligent fault analysis system. In the proposed scheme, models of primary device and secondary device are unified based on integrative information platform and hierarchical distributed structure. Fault recorder data is uploaded by different channels, in main substation side, fault diagnosis and analysis is made based on multi-source information in EMS, fault information system and fault recording system. Furthermore, a compatible solution is also put forward for the transitional stage of intelligent fault information analysis system. The system has been run in Fujian Power Grid, and the operation status show that the intelligent analysis of relay protection fault information system can be achieved well, providing reference for construction of power system fault information intelligent assistant-decision-making system.

Abstract:Impedance between faulted line and ground was generally regarded as a resistance,but in some cases the equivalent impedance can be reactive.The impedance loci with fault impedance seen by the protection in this condition was analyzed.Based on different mal-operation of relay,the solution scheme was given and an adaptive criterion was proposed.The simulation results show that the new adaptive relay has excellent adaptablity and selectivity,can prevent error action,illustrates a good prospect of application and extension.

Abstract:Accurate conditions monitoring and early wrong action warnings of relay protection in the Smart Substation is the basic guarantee to realize the normal operation of primary and secondary system of the power grid. At present, the traditional operation and maintenance monitoring methods of relay protections have poor timeliness, while some automatic monitoring methods have insufficient early warning performance, and lack the online action deduction function independent of the actual device. In this paper, a design method of integrated action deduction system including protection logic reasoning and software and hardware operation condition is proposed. The system can receive real-time operation information of protection online, simulate different types of faults, and output the recording information of sub modules belongs to the action deduction system. It can realize the online monitoring of device faults such as deducing the correctness of setting values at a certain time in the future, giving the wrong action warnings and predicting the probability of them as well, which effectively improves the operation and maintenance efficiency of the secondary system in the intelligent substation.

Abstract:With the development of energy Internet, intelligent substation in smart grid has been developed rapidly, and the distribution layout of relay protection device has become an inevitable trend.In order to deal with the intelligent substation relay protection decentralized arrangement, information remote control and other issues, this paper puts forward local relay protection scheme for substation based on wireless networks for industrial automation (WIA).According to the characteristics of the substation, the industrial wireless communication system is applied to the local relay protection control station of substation, which can monitor the substation locally installed device.We develop the wireless communication module for substation, and carry out the laboratory test and field test, while, the experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve high reliable and real-time transmission in complex environment, which has a certain reference value for the follow-up study of local relay protection in intelligent substation.

Abstract:On July 30 and 31,2012,India experienced two electric power blackouts.These two blackouts were both triggered by tripping of zone-3 distance relay of the same transmission line due to overload,and caused unreasonable action of other relays which resulted in cascading trip and led to widespread power blackouts.India's blackouts have exposed the vulnerability of the existing power system,especially the defects of protective relay in case of overload and power swing.Based on the analysis of relay actions in the blackouts,this paper proposes three functions of protective relay to meet the security demand of modern power grid,which are system protection function for security of power system,preventive protection function and the function of rapid removal of fault equipment.

Abstract:The paper first analyzes the main protection principles utilized in wide-area relaying protection system,including wide-area current differential protection,wide-area direction comparative protection and wide-area information based adaptive protection. With regard to the research status and exiting problems,this paper proposes some suggestions. Then from the application aspect,both the system structures and the division methods for information domain in the wide-area relaying protection system are expounded. How to realize system fault-tolerance and optimization based on wide-area redundant information is also discussed. The paper finally investigates how to apply related information technologies such as IEC61850 standard,multi-agent technology and grid computing technology to the wide-area relaying protection system. Wide area information based wide-area protection,which achieves both the relay protection and stability control,has become the central issue of modern power system research,and will be the future of power system protection and control.

Abstract:Abstract Because the intelligent substation is composed of a variety of intelligent electronic components, various types of information data will be generated during its operation. With the continuous implementation and rapid development of smart grid construction, the application of smart substations in power systems is becoming more and more extensive, and the number and scope of use are gradually expanding. In the face of the substantial increase in the commissioning of smart substations, people are paying more attention to the reliability of relay protection devices in smart substations during use. Strengthening research on the relay protection system of intelligent substations and improving the reliability of the system are urgent problems that need to be solved. The digitization of data information of the whole station is a typical feature of intelligent substations, on this basis, distributed relay protection can be realized; At the same time, the system-level status information can be identified and evaluated. Because there are too many spatial states, the calculation is very complicated. To solve this problem, this paper proposes to calculate the reliability of the relay protection device by Markov method, and then calculate in system level by GO method. Combining the Markov algorithm model with the GO method, the reliability of the relay protection system is calculated and analyzed, enabling the on-site operation and maintenance personnel to grasp the basic status of the relay protection device and the system operation in real time, obtain real-time feedback information, and better relay protection work of smart substations.

Abstract:Compared with the relay protection devices located in traditional substation, the protection devices used in smart substation based on IEC61850 are different under hardware structure and signal processing. Electromagnetic instrument transformers are replaced by electronic transformers with digital outputs, and hard-wiring control cables are displaced by optical fibers to transmit switch information and control commands. Besides, some communication networks are built for information sharing. Adopting the digital acquisition equipment, fiber communication and information network will undoubtedly affect the relay protection's action performance and may expand the functions to a certain extent. In this paper, the structure scheme of a smart substation was introduced firstly. Then, the technical characteristics of the electronic transformer and communication network technologies were analyzed, and their impacts on the operation performance and functional expansion of the relay protection installed in the substation's bay level were studied. According to the analysis results, it is founded that, applying the electronic instrument transformer can help to enhance the relay protection's reliability and simplify its hardware configuration, and constructing the communication network can contribute to achieve the integrated protection and substation area protection. In addition, a few application problems existed in the electronic transformer and communication network were briefly discussed.

Abstract:It is no longer difficult to get remote information by relay protection in smart grid and it is also required that the settings of relay protection should follow the change of power network and the network should be strong,self-healing and high secure after fault is cleared.A new scheme of coordination between main and backup protections is presented.By applying the principle of absolute selectivity and multi-level information redundancy.the backup protection makes use of the state information from adjacent substations to reduce the number of backup relays and avoid complicated setting coordination.The theory and algorithm of optimal reclosing time based on the minimum unbalanced energy after the last operation is presented to reduce the impulse of reclosing operation on system.The six-phase complex reclose scheme with the post -fault system robustness as its objective is given for the parallel lines on same tower.

Abstract:The RTDS experiment is carried out for the relay protections of outgoing power grid of largescale grid-connected wind farm and its existing problems are pointed out.The corresponding suggestions about the relay configuration are proposed:the main protection of 110 kV outgoing transmission line should adopt the phase-split current differential protection while its backup protection adopt the distance section I using differential equation algorithm,or the time setting of phasor-based distance section Ⅰ be prolonged by 0.15 s while the conventional distance section Ⅱ,distance section Ⅲ and zero-sequence current protection be equipped;the main protection of outgoing transformer should adopt the differential protection with the inrush current criterion using the dead angle identification,time-difference method,etc.while its backup protection adopt the compound over-current protection and zero-sequence current direction protection;the main protection of 330 kV outgoing transmission line should adopt two independent sets of phase-split current differential protection with the voltage sudden-change phase selector and zero-sequence directional component while its backup protection adopt the same configuration as that of 110 kV outgoing transmission line.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the process of zero-sequence direction relay mal-operation of a double parallel 500 kV and 220kV lines after a fault occurred at the end of the 500 kV line. The mechanism is studied, which shows that the mal-operation is caused by the zero-sequence mutual inductance between multi-transmission lines. In the case of grounding fault occurred at one of parallel line, the existence of zero-sequence mutual inductance would activate the zero-sequence direction relay of the other line. The conclusion of this paper will provide a valuable reference for similar faults analysis.
