Abstract:During the 2010 autumn and 2012 EAST campaign, the lithium coating on the plasma facing components (PFCs) became a routine wall conditioning technique, which was applied by evaporation assisted by helium or deuterium glow-discharge cleaning (GDC) or ion cyclotron radio frequency (ICRF), and real-time lithium powder injection. Two/three ovens were used to thermally evaporate nearly 1.0/1.4kg of lithium in EAST over a significant fraction of the PFCs in these two campaigns. During the 2010 autumn campaign, with the graphite PFCs, and with increasing lithium accumulation, the atomic neutral deuterium density near the lower X-point was reduced by a factor of 4 (from ~2×10 m to ~5×10 m) and this was correlated with a gradual reduction in the low hybrid wave (LHW) heating power needed to access the H mode, i.e. down to ~0.4 MW for the shots with only LHW as auxiliary heating. During the 2012 campaign, with the graphite PFCs in main vacuum chamber and molybdenum PFCs in divertor, the recycling level doesn’t show obvious downtrend with increasing lithium accumulation, but it was lower at just prior to LH transition in H-mode shots comparing to the L-mode shots for the plasma in the same condition. The contribution of molecular deuteron to the total deuteron was estimated via the measurement of molecular deuterium Fulcher-α band. It was found that, for the L-mode plasma in a certain conditions, the molecular deuterium contribute about 80%-98% of the total deuteron flux in the EAST divertor.
