The conservation and topological properties of the spin current, and the creation of a pure spin current are discussed.

Controlling Directed Atomic Motion and Second-Order Tunneling of a Spin-Orbit-coupled Atom in Optical Lattices

Abstract:We theoretically explore the tunneling dynamics for the tight-binding model of a single spin-orbit-coupled atom trapped in an optical lattice subjected to lattice shaking and to time-periodic Zeeman field. By means of analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling adds some results to the tunneling dynamics in both multiphoton resonance and far-off-resonance parameter regimes. When the driving frequency is resonant with the static Zeeman field (multiphoton resonances), we obtain an unexpected dynamical localization (DL) phenomenon where the single SO-coupled atom is restricted to making perfect two-site Rabi oscillation accompanied by spin flipping. By using the unconventional DL phenomenon, we are able to generate a ratchetlike effect which enables directed atomic motion towards different directions and accompanies periodic spin flipping under the action of SO coupling. For the far-off-resonance case, we show that by suppressing the usual intersite tunneling alone, it is possible to realize a type of spin-conserving second-order tunneling between next-nearest-neighboring sites, which is not accessible in the conventional lattice system without SO coupling. We also show that simultaneous controls of the usual intersite tunneling and the SO-coupling-related second-order tunneling are necessary for quasienergies flatness (collapse) and completely frozen dynamics to exist. These results may be relevant to potential applications such as spin-based quantum information processing and design of spintronics devices.

Abstract:Using the sensitivity of atomic transitions on the polarizations of pump fields in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic systems, we show the polarization-direction-dependent anisotropic susceptibility of atoms that yields the strong coupling between the spin and the transverse momentum of light, i.e., spin–orbit interaction (SOI). Moreover, we also show that the spin-Hall effect of light can be obtained due to SOI. It can be controlled via the orientation of the anisotropy and frequency of light, and substantially enhanced up to several micrometers, which could be easily observed in experiment.

Controllable spin-Hall and related effects of light in an atomic medium via coupling fields

Abstract:We show the existence of spin-Hall effect of light (SHEL) in an atomic medium which is made anisotropic via electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is made birefringent by applying an additional linearly polarized coupling light beam. The refractive index and the orientation of the optics axis are controlled by the coupling beam. We show that after transmitting the atomic medium, a linearly polarized probe light beam splits into its two spin components by opposite transverse shifts. With proper choice of parameters and atomic density of about $2.5times10^{17},mathrm{m}^{-3}$, the shifts are about the order of wavelength and can be larger than the wavelength by increasing the atomic density. We propose a novel measurement scheme based on a balanced homodyne detection (BHD). By properly choosing the polarization, phase, and transverse mode of the local oscillator of the BHD, one can independently measure (i) the SHEL shifts of the two spin components; (ii) the spatial and angular shifts; (iii) the transverse and longitudinal shifts. The measurement can reach the quantum limit of precision by detecting signals at the modulation frequency of the electro-optic modulator used to modulate the input probe beam. The precision is estimated to be at the nanometer level limited by the quantum noise.

Abstract:Given the tremendous increase of data in digital era, vector vortex light with strongly coupled spin and orbital angular momenta of photons have attracted great attention for high-capacity optical applications. To fully utilize such rich degrees of freedom of light, it is highly anticipated to separate the coupled angular momentum with a simple but powerful method, and the optical Hall effect becomes a promising scheme. Recently, the spin-orbit optical Hall effect has been proposed in terms of general vector vortex light using two anisotropic crystals. However, angular momentum separation for π-vector vortex modes, another important part in vector optical fields, have not been explored and it remains challenging to realize broadband response. Here, the wavelength-independent spin-orbit optical Hall effect in π-vector fields has been analyzed based on Jones matrices and verified experimentally using a single-layer liquid-crystalline film with designed holographic structures. Every π-vector vortex mode can be decoupled into spin and orbital components with equal magnitude but opposite signs. Our work could enrich the fields of high-dimensional optics.

Abstract:Electronic properties like current flow are generally independent of the electron's spin angular momentum, an internal degree of freedom present in quantum particles. The spin Hall effects (SHEs), first proposed 40 years ago, are an unusual class of phenomena where flowing particles experience orthogonally directed spin-dependent Lorentz-like forces, analogous to the conventional Lorentz force for the Hall effect, but opposite in sign for two spin states. Such spin Hall effects have been observed for electrons flowing in spin-orbit coupled materials such as GaAs or InGaAs and for laser light traversing dielectric junctions. Here we observe the spin Hall effect in a quantum-degenerate Bose gas, and use the resulting spin-dependent Lorentz forces to realize a cold-atom spin transistor. By engineering a spatially inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling field for our quantum gas, we explicitly introduce and measure the requisite spin-dependent Lorentz forces, in excellent agreement with our calculations. This atomtronic circuit element behaves as a new type of velocity-insensitive adiabatic spin-selector, with potential application in devices such as magnetic or inertial sensors. In addition, such techniques --- for both creating and measuring the SHE --- are clear prerequisites for engineering topological insulators and detecting their associated quantized spin Hall effects in quantum gases. As implemented, our system realized a laser-actuated analog to the Datta-Das spin transistor.

Abstract:The inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) induced by spin pumping in indium tin oxide (ITO) films has been investigated quantitatively. We measured ferromagnetic resonance and electromotive force spectra with changing the ITO thickness in ITO/permalloy bilayer films. The intensity of the observed electromotive force changes systematically with the ITO film thickness, which is consistent with the prediction of ISHE. By using an equivalent circuit model, the spin Hall angle and diffusion length of the ITO film are estimated. (c) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Quantification of spin-charge interconversion has become increasingly important in the fast-developing field of spin-orbitronics. Pure spin current generated by spin pumping acts as a sensitive probe for many bulk and interface spin-orbit effects, which has been indispensable for the discovery of many promising new spin-orbit materials. We apply spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect experiments, as a useful metrology, and study spin-orbit effects in a variety of metals and metal interfaces. We quantify the spin Hall effects in Ir and W using the conventional bilayer structures and discuss the self-induced voltage in a single layer of ferromagnetic permalloy. Finally, we extend our discussions to multilayer structures and quantitatively reveal the spin current flow in two consecutive normal metal layers. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:The Orbital Hall effect, which originates from materials with weak spin-orbit coupling, has attracted considerable interest for spin-orbitronic applications. Here, we demonstrate the inverse effect of the orbital Hall effect and observe orbitronic terahertz emission in the Ti and Mn materials. Through spin-orbit transition in the ferromagnetic layer, the generated orbital current can be converted to charge current in the Ti and Mn layers via the inverse orbital Hall effect. Furthermore, the inserted W layer provides an additional conversion of the orbital-charge current in the Ti and Mn layers, significantly enhancing the orbitronic terahertz emission. Moreover, the orbitronic terahertz emission can be manipulated by cooperating with the inverse orbital Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect in the different sample configurations. Our results not only discover the physical mechanism of condensed matter physics but also pave the way for designing promising spin-orbitronic devices and terahertz emitters.

Abstract:The optical spin Hall effect, as an optical analogue of spin-orbit coupling of fermionic electrons, has attracted increasing interest in fundamental physics and nanophotonic applications. In addition to spin, charge of particles, as the other degree of freedom, plays a significant role in spin-orbit interaction as well. However, the optical counterpart of charge conjugation has been absent due to the charge-free nature of photons. Here, in a one-dimensional photonic crystal, we report reversible optical spin currents from the opposite band edges of the photonic band gap, which can provide an optical analogue of charge conjugation in spin-orbit coupling. The effective magnetic field acting on the photons is controlled by the tunable splitting of the transverse electric and transverse magnetic optical modes, which is confirmed by both experiment and simulation. Based on the tunable effective magnetic field, the optical spin current can be controlled by the tunable cavity length in an open cavity. Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect of light beams reflected from the surfaces of various two-dimensional hexagonal crystalline structures, considering their associated time-reversal $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion $\mathcal{I}$ symmetries, is investigated. Employing the Haldane model with tunable parameters as a generic model, we examine the longitudinal and transverse spin-separations of the reflected beam in both topological non-trivial and trivial systems. The study reveals that the sign switching of the PSHE in these materials is attributed to the non-trivial and trivial topology. By manipulating the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and external electric fields, we demonstrate topological phase transitions in buckled Xene monolayer materials through the photonic spin Hall effect. Different behaviors of the photonic spin Hall effect are observed in various topological phases within these materials. Additionally, we explore the reflected spin and valley-polarized spatial shifts in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. The photonic spin Hall effect in buckled Xene monolayer materials and transition metal dichalcogenides is highly influenced by the spin and valley degrees of freedom of charge carriers, offering a promising avenue to explore spintronics and valleytronics in these hexagonal materials. We propose that the photonic spin Hall effect in Haldane materials can serve as a metrological tool for optical parameter characterization and as a promising method for determining Chern numbers and topological phase transitions through direct optical weak measurement techniques.

Abstract:We observe the inverse spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas confined in AlGaAs/InGaAs quantum wells. Specifically, we find that an inhomogeneous spin density induced by the optical injection gives rise an electric current transverse to both the spin polarization and its gradient. The spin Hall conductivity can be inferred from such a measurement through the Einstein relation and the Onsager relation, and is found to have the order of magnitude of $0.5(e^{2}/h)$. The observation is made at the room temperature and in samples with macroscopic sizes, suggesting that the inverse spin Hall effect is a robust macroscopic transport phenomenon.
