Abstract:We present a compact system of synchronization for two fiber-based optical frequency comb lasers. We use a free- running continuous wave laser as an intermediary to obtain the relative noise of two combs and employ an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator (EOM) to achieve active phase feedback for fast synchronization. The EOM bandwidth is 150 kHz and the relative linewidth is suppressed markedly from 300 kHz to sub-hertz values. The relative effective timing jitter of the two pulse trains is also decreased from 680 fs to 25 fs. The proposed method shows promise for developing a high-performance, low-cost, fiber-based dual-comb interferometer for ranging or spectroscopy.

Abstract:Integrated narrow-linewidth lasers are the key devices in compact coherent optical systems of metrology, sensing, and optical microwave generation. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated laser based on an optical negative feedback scheme. The laser is composed of a commercial distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode and an on-chip micro-resonator with a Q-factor of 0.815 million. The feedback optical field is coupled back to the laser cavity through the back facet. Therefore, the laser can maintain the lasing efficiency of the DFB laser diode. The linewidth of the DFB laser diode is compressed from 2 MHz to 6 kHz, corresponding to the linewidth reduction factor of 25.2 dB. The theoretical result shows that the laser performance still has a huge improvement margin through precise control of the detuning between laser frequency and the micro-resonator, as well as the phase delay of the feedback optical field. The hybrid narrow-linewidth laser diode has wide application prospects in coherent optical systems benefitting from the low cost and volume productivity.

Abstract:A cost-effective linewidth compressing method for distributed feedback (DFB) laser with a high ratio based on self-injection locking (SIL) and Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) is proposed. The combination of SIL and PDH helps to reduce the phase noise of the DFB laser, thus a high linewidth compression ratio can be achieved. The experiment results show the single sideband (SSB) phase noise of a commercial DFB laser has been reduced by more than 75-dB in the frequency range from 100-Hz to 10-kHz. The linewidth is narrowed to be around 140-Hz compared with the free-running state of 2.3-MHz, with a high compression ratio of over 1.6 x 10(4). The in-loop Allan deviation (ADEV) of the DFB laser is measured to be 5.4 x 10(-11) within the average time of 100 s, indicating the long-term frequency stability.

Abstract:A widely tunable V-cavity semiconductor laser with kilohertz linewidth is demonstrated using simple self-injection method. The tunable laser is packaged into a small-form-factor 9-pin TOSA and can be tuned over 22 channels at 100 GHz spacing with side mode suppression ratios over 36 dB. Self-injection method is used for linewidth reduction by applying optical feedback. Linewidth of the V-cavity laser can be compressed from several megahertz to tens of kilohertz. The linewidth reduction method is essentially channel independent and can be easily realized. It can meet the requirements of many applications such as high-order modulation, coherent communication and sensing. Abstract:A highly coherent optical frequency comb (OFC) based on spectral broadening of a phase-locked dual-wavelength microcavity laser is presented. By directly modulating the microcavity laser to generate multiple sidebands, the cross-injection locking of the dual modes is achieved and the beat-signal linewidth is improved from 13.5 MHz to less than 100 Hz. Subsequently, 21 flat comb teeth in a ±3 dB power variation are achieved by combining a phase modulator. Finally, an OFC with a bandwidth of 16 nm is successfully realized by narrowing the optical pulse and spectral broadening in a commercial nonlinear optical fiber. The repetition rate has a low phase noise of -102 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, demonstrating the generated OFC has a high degree of coherence.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a technique of making an ultrastable laser referenced to a multi-cavity, corresponding to a lower thermal noise limit due to the larger equivalent beam size. The multi-cavity consists of several pairs of mirrors and a common spacer. We can stabilize the laser frequencies on these cavities, and average the laser frequencies with synthesizing technique. In comparison with a single cavity system, relative frequency instability of the synthesized laser can be improved by a factor of the squire root of the cavity number (n). In addition, we perform an experiment to simulate a two-cavity system. Experimental results show that frequency instability of the synthesized laser is improved by a factor of 1.4, and discrimination of the laser frequency instability, introduced by the process of lasers synthesizing, is negligible, and can reach a floor at low level 10-18 limited by noise of currently used signal generators. This technique is comparable with other techniques; thus, it can gain a factor of the squre root of n on the frequency instability of an ultrastable laser to an unprecedented level.

Abstract:A standard method to reduce the linewidth of semiconductor lasers involves the use of external optical feedback (EOF). However, feedback powers less than 1 % usually trigger coherence collapse (CC), leading to chaotic laser dynamics and linewidth broadening. This paper explores a method to mitigate CC through precise tuning of the feedback polarization depending on the feedback power. We report a semiconductor laser with a sub-kHz linewidth, achieved via EOF. The laser features a U-shaped cavity with two sampled grating distributed Bragg reflectors (SG-DBRs), enabling broad tunability across a 42 nm wavelength range (1513-1555 nm). By injecting optical feedback into both sides of the laser cavity via an external fiber-based cavity, we reduce the linewidth by more than three orders of magnitude, from MHz to sub-kHz across the laser's tuning range. Our approach achieves significant linewidth reduction while maintaining coherence at high feedback levels, marking an improvement over prior studies where CC limited performance. These results pave the way for ultra-narrow linewidth diode lasers with wide tunability, which would benefit fields like coherent optical communications and spectroscopy.

Abstract:Dual-comb lasers from which asynchronous ultrashort pulses can be simultaneously generated have recently become an interesting research subject. They could be an intriguing alternative to the current dual-laser optical-frequency-comb source with highly sophisticated electronic control systems. If generated through a common light path traveled by all pulses, the common-mode noises between the spectral lines of different pulse trains could be significantly reduced. Therefore, coherent dual-comb generation from a completely common-path, unidirectional lasing cavity would be an interesting territory to explore. In this paper, we demonstrate such a dual-comb lasing scheme based on a nanomaterial saturable absorber with additional pulse narrowing and broadening mechanisms concurrently introduced into a mode-locked fiber laser. The interactions between multiple soliton formation mechanisms result in unusual bifurcation into two-pulse states with quite different characteristics. Simultaneous oscillation of pulses with four-fold difference in pulsewidths and tens of Hz repetition rate difference is observed. The coherence between these spectral-overlapped, picosecond and femtosecond pulses is further verified by the corresponding asynchronous cross-sampling and dual-comb spectroscopy measurements.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy typically requires the utilization of two independent and phase-locked femtosecond lasers, resulting in a complex and expensive system that hinders its industrial applications. Single-cavity dual-comb lasers are considered as one of the primary solution to simplify the system. However, controlling the crucial parameter of difference in repetition rates remains challenging. In this study, we present a dual-comb mode-locked Yb:CALGO laser based on a cavity-shared configuration with separated end mirrors. We employ two pairs of end mirrors and two thin-film polarizers angled at 45 degrees to the cavity axis, leading to separating the cross-polarized laser modes. We achieve simultaneous operation of two combs at approximately 1040 nm with pulse durations of around 400 fs and an average power exceeding 1 W. The repetition rates are approximately 59 MHz and their difference can be easily tuned from zero up to the MHz range. By effectively canceling out common mode noises, we observe minimal fluctuation in the repetition rate difference with a standard deviation of about 1.9 Hz over ten minutes, while experiencing fluctuations in repetition rates as large as 90 Hz. We demonstrate the capabilities of this system by utilizing the free-running dual-comb setup for asynchronous optical sampling on a saturable absorber and measuring etalon transmission spectrum. This system allows for simple and independent control of the repetition rates and their difference during operation, facilitating the selection of optimal repetition rate difference and implementation of phase-locking loops. This advancement paves the way for the development of simple yet high-performance dual-comb laser sources.

Abstract:Dual-comb sources with equally spaced and low phase noise frequency lines are of great importance for high resolution spectroscopy and metrology. In the terahertz frequency range, electrically pumped semiconductor quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are suitable candidates for frequency comb and dual-comb operation. For a single laser frequency comb, the repetition rate can be locked using a microwave injection locking and the carrier frequency can be locked to a highly stable source. However, for the locking of two laser combs, four frequencies (two repetition rates and two carrier offset frequencies) should be simultaneously locked; If one only refers to the dual-comb signal, two relative frequencies, i.e., the offset frequency and repetition frequency of one laser against those of the other laser, should be locked. Although the locking techniques that have been successfully used for a single laser comb can be, in principle, applied to a dual-comb laser source, the complete locking considerably complicates the implementation of such a system. Here, we propose a method to stabilize a terahertz QCL dual-comb source by phase locking one of the dual-comb lines to a radio frequency (RF) synthesizer. This technique forces one of the lasers to follow the tone of the other one (keeping the sum of the carrier offset frequency difference and repetition frequency difference between the two laser combs as a constant) by exploiting a laser self-detection that avoids the use of an external detector. Through the demonstration of this locking technique, we demonstrate that the dual-comb can generate periodic pulses over a 2 us time scale, showing that the terahertz QCL comb without a control of the repetition rate can produce pulsed-type waveforms.

Abstract:Two-color lasers with high coherence are paramount in precision measurement, accurate light-matter interaction, and low-noise photonic microwave generation. However, conventional two-color lasers often suffer from low coherence, particularly when these two colors face large frequency spacings. Here, harnessing the Pound-Drever-Hall technique, we synchronize two lasers to a shared ultra-stable optical reference cavity to break through the thermal noise constraint, achieving a highly coherent two-color laser. With conquering these non-common mode noises, we demonstrate an exceptional fractional frequency instability of 2.7E-17 at 1 second when normalized to the optical frequency. Characterizing coherence across large frequency spacings poses a significant challenge. To tackle this, we employ electro-optical frequency division to transfer the relative stability of a 0.5 THz spacing two-color laser to a 25 GHz microwave signal. As its performance surpasses the sensitivity of the current apparatus, we establish two independent systems for comparative analyses. The resulting 25 GHz signals exhibit exceptional phase noise of -74 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz and -120 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz, demonstrating the two-color laser's performance approaching the quantum noise limit of its synchronization system. It also sets a new record for the two-point frequency division method in photonic microwave generation. Our achievement in highly coherent two-color lasers and low-noise microwave signals will usher in a new era for precision measurements and refine the accuracy of light-matter and microwave-matter interactions to their next decimal place.

Abstract:We present an optically stabilized Erbium fiber frequency comb with a broad repetition rate tuning range based on a hybrid mode-locked oscillator. We lock two combmodes to narrow-linewidth reference lasers in turn to investigate the best performance of control loops. The control bandwidth of fast and slow piezoelectric transducers reaches 70 kHz, while that of pump current modulation with phase-lead compensation is extended to 32 kHz, exceeding laser intrinsic response. Eventually, simultaneous lock of both loops is realized to totally phase-stabilize the comb, which will facilitate precision dual-comb spectroscopy, laser ranging, and timing distribution. In addition, a 1.8-MHz span of the repetition rate is achieved by an automatic optical delay line that is helpful in manufacturing a secondary comb with a similar repetition rate. The oscillator is housed in a homemade temperature-controlled box with an accuracy of +/- 0.02 K, which not only keeps high signal-to-noise ratio of the beat notes with reference lasers, but also guarantees self-starting at the same mode-locking every time. Autonomous frequency locking for zero-offset microcomb

Abstract:The stabilization of optical frequency comb conventionally relies on active electronic feedback loops and stable frequency references. Here, we propose a new approach for autonomous frequency locking (AFL) to generate a zero-offset frequency comb based on cooperative nonlinear optical processes in a microcavity. In a simplified few-mode system, AFL enables the concept of fractional harmonic generation as a zero-offset multi-laser reference for measuring the carrier envelope offset frequency ($f_{\mathrm{ceo}}$) of frequency combs spanning less than one octave, such as 1/3 octave. Combining with Kerr comb generation in a microcaivity, AFL is further applied to directly generate zero-$f_{\mathrm{ceo}}$ soliton comb that is robust against fluctuations in pump laser and cavity resonances. Numerical simulations validate the AFL scheme, showing good agreement with analytical prediction of the locking condition. This work presents a new pathway for exploring novel frequency locking mechanisms and technologies using integrated photonic devices, and also appeals further investigations of cooperative nonlinear optics processes in microcavities.

Abstract: Microcombs are revolutionizing optoelectronics by providing parallelized, mutually coherent wavelength channels for time-frequency metrology and information processing. To implement this essential function in integrated photonic systems, it is desirable to drive microcombs directly with an on-chip laser in a simple and flexible way. However, two major difficulties are preventing this goal: 1) generating mode-locked comb states usually requires a significant amount of pump power and 2) the requirement to align laser and resonator frequency significantly complicates operation and limits the tunability of the comb lines. Here, we address these problems by using microresonators on an AlGaAs on-insulator platform to generate dark-pulse microcombs. This highly nonlinear platform dramatically relaxes fabrication requirements and leads to a record-low pump power of less than 1 mW for coherent comb generation. Dark-pulse microcombs facilitated by thermally-controlled avoided mode-crossings are accessed by direct DFB laser pumping. Without any feedback or control circuitries, the comb shows good coherence and stability. This approach also leads to an unprecedented wide chirping range of all the comb lines. Our work provides a route to realize power-efficient, simple and reconfigurable microcombs that can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of photonic systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a mode-locked Er:fiber laser with a compact fiber-pigtailed optical bench containing a free-space electro-optic modulator for high-speed feedback control. The achieved servo bandwidth of the beat frequency between a given comb component and a reference laser is approximately 850 kHz. The realization of a narrow-linewidth and highly stable frequency comb is confirmed by measuring both in-loop and out-of-loop beat frequencies. We also demonstrate the frequency measurement of two iodine-stabilized Nd:YAG lasers through the narrow-linewidth comb without stability degradation. The developed optical frequency comb can work continuously for weeks without maintenance.

Abstract:CMOS-compatible Kerr microcombs have drawn substantial interest as mass-manufacturable, compact alternatives to bulk frequency combs. This could enable deployment of many comb-reliant applications previously confined to laboratories. Particularly enticing is the prospect of microcombs performing optical frequency division in compact optical atomic clocks. Unfortunately, it is difficult to meet the self-referencing requirement of microcombs in these systems due to the $\sim$THz repetition rates typically required for octave-spanning comb generation. Additionally, it is challenging to spectrally engineer a microcomb system to align a comb mode with an atomic clock transition with sufficient signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we adopt a Vernier dual-microcomb scheme for optical frequency division of a stabilized ultranarrow-linewidth continuous-wave laser at 871 nm to a $\sim$235 MHz output frequency. In addition to enabling measurement of the comb repetition rates, this scheme brings the freedom to pick comb lines from either or both of the combs. We exploit this flexibility to shift an ultra-high-frequency ($\sim$100 GHz) carrier-envelope offset beat down to frequencies where detection is possible and to place a comb line close to the 871 nm laser - tuned so that if frequency-doubled it would fall close to the clock transition in $^{171}$Yb$^+$. Moreover, we introduce a novel scheme which suppresses frequency noise arising from interferometric phase fluctuations in our dual-comb system and reduces the frequency instability down to our measurement limit. Our dual-comb system can potentially combine with an integrated ion trap toward future chip-scale optical atomic clocks.
