Abstract:Soliton "molecules", i.e., bound states of two or several solitons, represent a fundamental concept, which manifests itself in various nonlinear systems. They are dynamically similar to chemical molecules, attracting great interest to fundamental studies and offering potential applications (such as multilevel encoding of optical data). Here, the study demonstrates a novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds (DSMC) built as a hybrid bound state of multiple bound soliton pulses carried by two wavelengths in a fiber laser. The DSMCs are maintained by two different binding mechanisms, viz., the self-phase modulation (SPM) interaction between temporal solitons at the same wavelength, mediated by their tails, and the cross-phase modulation (XPM) interaction between solitons at different wavelengths. They also exhibit unique temporal and spectral vibration profiles. Both static DSMCs and ones with robust internal vibrations are generated experimentally in the fiber laser, and numerically as solutions of the corresponding dissipative nonlinear model. The findings reported here expand the concept of soliton molecules and further promote their similarity to chemical molecules. Novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds that are built as hybrid bound states of multiple solitons carried by two different optical wavelengths are demonstrated in mode-locked fiber lasers. The vibration dynamics of DSMCs are experimental and theoretically revealed, suggesting directions for further work in nonlinear fiber optics, as well as using soliton bound states for emulation of molecular dynamics. image

Abstract:Multi-wavelength fiber lasers have the advantages of low cost, easy integration withfiber systems, and wide tunable range, which is the key component of dense wavelength divisionmultiplexing (DWDM). 2D MoTe2micro-sheets have drawn lots of researchers' attention due totheir anisotropic layered structure and high optical adsorption. Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of stable single solitons and soliton molecules in a 2-mu m thulium-holmium-doped fiber laser mode-locked through the nonlinear polarization evolution technique within an anomalously dispersive cavity. Single 0.65 nJ solitons feature a 7.3 nm spectral FWHM and 540 fs temporal duration, yielding a time bandwidth product close to the Fourier-transform limitation. Under the same pumping power of 740 mW, stable out-of-phase twin-soliton molecules, featuring a temporal separation of 2.5 ps between the two similar to 700 fs pulses, are generated in a deterministic way, while the central wavelength of the soliton molecules can be tuned from 1920 to 1940 nm. Finally, we present strong experimental evidence of vibrating soliton molecules. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report the generation of trapezoidal envelope pulses and soliton rains in an erbium-doped fiber laser with an MoS2-deposited microfiber saturable absorber. The pulse duration of the trapezoidal envelope pulses increases from 7 to 95 ns with the increment of the pump power. The maximum intracavity pulse energy is as high as 34 nJ. At a low pump power, the proposed laser can be switched to the soliton-rains regime by properly changing the polarization states. The microfiber-based MoS2 all-fiber laser can serve as an optical source with improved pulse energy for potential applications in nonlinear dynamics. (c) 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Abstract:Bound states of solitons ("molecules") occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulation, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, and maintain potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and cross-phase-modulation-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:We report on the first experimental observation, to the best of our knowledge, of soliton molecules in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber (MMF) laser. By adjusting the waveplates inside the cavity, not only the spatiotemporal mode-locking state with a stable single pulse but also soliton molecules are observed. Various soliton molecules, including soliton pairs, soliton triplets, and soliton quartets with different pulse separations, are achieved. Transition of different operation states with pump power is given. The results would be beneficial for further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics in spatiotemporal mode-locked MMF lasers. Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) Zinc 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (Zn-MOF-74) is a kind of metal–organic framework (MOF), which has been intensively studied in gas adsorption, gas storage, and catalysis. However, the potential applications of Zn-MOF-74 in the fields of optics, especially in the areas of nonlinear optical response and ultrafast optics need further exploration. Here, the nonlinear optical properties of Zn-MOF-74 are systematically investigated. In this work, we demonstrate that it gradually becomes saturated with the increase of the intensity of the incident pulse, which makes Zn-MOF-74 an effective saturable absorber in a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser for ultrashort pulse generation. Our experiments yield stable single solitons as well as soliton molecules with tunable characteristics. When the pump power is 126 mW, conventional solitons with an output power of 2.35 mW and a pulse width of 0.93 ps are obtained. The generated pulses characterize a central wavelength of 1554.84 nm and a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.07 nm. By adjusting the pump power and polarization appropriately, the center wavelength of the soliton molecules is tunable from 1532.76 nm to 1554.24 nm. The experimental observations further proves that Zn-MOF-74 has great potential in ultrafast optics.

Abstract:Recently, few-layer tungsten disulfide (WS2), as a shining 2D material, has been discovered to possess both the saturable absorption ability and large nonlinear refractive index. Here, we demonstrate versatile soliton pulses in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with a WS2-deposited microfiber. The few-layer WS2 is prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method and transferred onto a microfiber by the optical deposition method. Study found, the WS2-deposited microfiber can operate simultaneously as a mode-locker and a high-nonlinear device. In experiment, by further inserting the WS2 device into the fiber laser, besides the dual-wavelength soliton, noise-like soliton pulse, conventional soliton and its harmonic form are obtained by properly adjusting the pump strength and the polarization states. For the dual-wavelength soliton pulses and noise-like pulse, the maximum output power of 14.2 mW and pulse energy of 4.74 nJ is obtained, respectively. In addition, we also achieve the maximum harmonic number (135) of conventional soliton, corresponding to a repetition rate of ∼497.5 MHz. Our study shows clearly that WS2-deposited microfiber can be as a high-nonlinear photonic device for studying a plenty of nonlinear soliton phenomena.

Abstract:We report, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the discovery of quantized pulse separations between phase-locked soliton pairs in a thulium-doped fiber laser at the wavelength range of 2 μm. The soliton pairs are formed by the nonlinear binding interaction between the solitons and dispersive waves, and the two lowest-order Kelly sidebands drive the interaction in these soliton pairs and fix the pulse separations of the soliton pairs to a discrete set of values. Our experimental observations are well confirmed by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Self-assembly of optical solitons propagating in nonlinear dissipative systems spreads the concept of soliton molecules. Assisted with the real-time spectral interferometry, plentiful internal dynamics has been probed within the multi-pulse patterns, emphasizing the striking analogies with the matter molecules. Therefrom, these particle-like behaviors would yield more intriguing landscapes towards the extended degrees of freedom considering increased constituents. Here, we transfer the concept of 'isomer' to the experimental investigation on the unexplored isomeric dynamics of soliton molecules in parallel. Particularly, two isomers for soliton triplets and four isomers for soliton quadruplets are captured under different self-assembled forms, within each of which the binding separations and relative phases of the constituents are governed by mutual soliton interactions. With the diverse separation-phase evolving trajectories mapped in the interaction plane, the detailed insights of the temporal distribution and the transient dynamics are displayed with respect to a panorama of the isomeric dynamics. The perspective of optical isomers shed new light on the analogy with matter molecules, and the underlying isomeric dynamics may stimulate the artificial manipulation of various soliton molecules for ultrafast applications.

Abstract:We report the first experimental observation, to the best of our knowledge, of soliton molecules in a robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked fiber laser with a nonreciprocal phase bias that results in a low self-starting threshold and stable mode locking. Through elaborately tuning the waveplate in the cavity, calibrating the laser pulse from conventional soliton to soliton molecules is implemented, and versatile soliton molecules including harmonic soliton pairs, tightly or loosely bound soliton quartets, multipulse bound solitons are achieved and manipulated at different pump powers. Theoretical investigations are established to elucidate the soliton molecules spectral characteristics with various phase differences and time separations in the cavity that elicit good concurrence with achieved experimental results. The achieved results both rich the nonlinear dynamics in fiber lasers and pave the potential applications for this excellent architecture fiber laser.

Abstract:Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) with two-dimensional (2D) structures are of great interest for their extraordinary electrical, optical, magnetic, and mechanical properties. In this work, a novel cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanosheets (NSs) based saturable absorber (SA) with a modulation depth of 6.4 % is fabricated through liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method, and successfully applied to a passive mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (PML-EDFL) for the first time as far as we know. By adjusting the pump power and optimizing the orientation of the intra-cavity polarization controller, a stable conventional solitons (CS) pulse with a duration of 905 fs and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 58.5 dB at fundamental repetition frequency of 4.03 MHz, a pair of bound solitons with time interval of 4.9 ps between two 1.8 ps pulses are generated in proposed PML-EDFL. Meanwhile, the vector characteristics of generated soliton pulse are investigated, and polarization-locked vector solitons are observed. The results reveal that the CoS NSs have superior polarization insensitive nonlinear optical modulation properties and will find extensive application potential in the ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:Soliton molecules (SMs) are stable bound states between solitons. SMs in fiber lasers are intensively investigated and embody analogies with matter molecules. Recent experimental studies on SMs formed by bright solitons, including soliton-pair, soliton-triplet or even soliton-quartet molecules, are intensive. However, study on soliton-binding states between bright and dark solitons is limited. In this work, the formation of such novel SMs in a fiber laser with near-zero group velocity dispersion (ZGVD) is reported. Physically, these SMs are formed because of the incoherent cross-phase modulation of light and constitute a new form of SMs that are conceptually analog to the multi-atom molecules in chemistry. Our research results could assist the understanding of the dynamics of large SM complexes. These findings may also motivate potential applications in large-capacity transmission and all-optical information storage.
