Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We report on the first experimental observation, to the best of our knowledge, of soliton molecules in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber (MMF) laser. By adjusting the waveplates inside the cavity, not only the spatiotemporal mode-locking state with a stable single pulse but also soliton molecules are observed. Various soliton molecules, including soliton pairs, soliton triplets, and soliton quartets with different pulse separations, are achieved. Transition of different operation states with pump power is given. The results would be beneficial for further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics in spatiotemporal mode-locked MMF lasers. Abstract:Locking of longitudinal modes in laser cavities is the common path to generate ultrashort pulses. In traditional multi-wavelength mode-locked lasers, the group velocities rely on lasing wavelengths due to the chromatic dispersion, yielding multiple trains of independently evolved pulses. Here, we show that mode-locked solitons at different wavelengths can be synchronized inside the cavity by engineering the intracavity group delay with a programmable pulse shaper. Frequency-resolved measurements fully retrieve the fine temporal structure of pulses, validating the direct generation of synchronized ultrafast lasers from two to five wavelengths with sub-pulse repetition-rate up to ~1.26 THz. Simulation results well reproduce and interpret the key experimental phenomena, and indicate that the saturable absorption effect automatically synchronize multi-wavelength solitons in despite of the small residual group delay difference. These results demonstrate an effective approach to create synchronized complex-structure solitons, and offer an effective platform to study the evolution dynamics of nonlinear wavepackets.

Abstract:Recently, few-layer tungsten disulfide (WS2), as a shining 2D material, has been discovered to possess both the saturable absorption ability and large nonlinear refractive index. Here, we demonstrate versatile soliton pulses in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with a WS2-deposited microfiber. The few-layer WS2 is prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method and transferred onto a microfiber by the optical deposition method. Study found, the WS2-deposited microfiber can operate simultaneously as a mode-locker and a high-nonlinear device. In experiment, by further inserting the WS2 device into the fiber laser, besides the dual-wavelength soliton, noise-like soliton pulse, conventional soliton and its harmonic form are obtained by properly adjusting the pump strength and the polarization states. For the dual-wavelength soliton pulses and noise-like pulse, the maximum output power of 14.2 mW and pulse energy of 4.74 nJ is obtained, respectively. In addition, we also achieve the maximum harmonic number (135) of conventional soliton, corresponding to a repetition rate of ∼497.5 MHz. Our study shows clearly that WS2-deposited microfiber can be as a high-nonlinear photonic device for studying a plenty of nonlinear soliton phenomena.

Abstract:We report a tunable spatiotemporally mode-locked large-mode-area Er:ZBLAN fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. A diffraction grating is introduced to select the operating wavelength. Under the spectral and spatial filtering effects provided by the grating and spatial coupling respectively, stable ps-level spatiotemporally mode-locked pulses around 2.8 µm with a repetition rate of 43.4 MHz are generated. Through a careful adjustment of the grating, a broad wavelength tuning range from 2747 to 2797 nm is realized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first wavelength-tunable spatiotemporally mode-locked fiber laser in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) in fiber lasers has attracted significant attention due to its wide scientific and industrial applications, and achieved great progress in the near-infrared wavelength range. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally a mid-infrared (MIR) STML laser based on a step-index multimode Er:ZBLAN fiber. The laser adopts a short linear cavity mode-locked by a large-relaxation-time saturable absorber, and generates stable 78.6 ps pulses at 2.79 μm with a repetition rate of 79.8 MHz. Through adjustment of the coupling condition, a wide variety of STML states are observed. Numerical simulations show that the modal dispersion is counteracted by the spatial filtering effect alone. This work provides a simple scheme for MIR fiber lasers to achieve STML, and helps to understand the underlying nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode locking is a nonlinear process of multimode soliton self-organization. Here the real-time buildup dynamics of the multiple solitons in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber laser are investigated, assisted by the time-stretch technique. We find that the buildup processes are transverse mode dependent, especially during the stages of relaxation oscillation and Q -switching prior to multiple soliton formation. Furthermore, we observe that the transverse modal composition of these generated pulses among the multiple solitons can be different from each other, indicating the spatiotemporal structure of the multiple soliton. A simplified theoretical model based on pulse energy evolution is put forward to interpret the role of 3D saturable absorber on spatiotemporal structures of spatiotemporal mode-locking multiple solitons. Our work has presented the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in multimode fiber lasers, which are novel to those inside the single transverse mode fiber lasers. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of stable single solitons and soliton molecules in a 2-mu m thulium-holmium-doped fiber laser mode-locked through the nonlinear polarization evolution technique within an anomalously dispersive cavity. Single 0.65 nJ solitons feature a 7.3 nm spectral FWHM and 540 fs temporal duration, yielding a time bandwidth product close to the Fourier-transform limitation. Under the same pumping power of 740 mW, stable out-of-phase twin-soliton molecules, featuring a temporal separation of 2.5 ps between the two similar to 700 fs pulses, are generated in a deterministic way, while the central wavelength of the soliton molecules can be tuned from 1920 to 1940 nm. Abstract:Due to the necessity of making a series of random adjustments after mode-locking in most experiments for preparing soliton molecules, the repeatability of the preparations remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a novel all-polarization-maintaining erbium-doped fiber laser that utilizes a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror for mode-locking and features a linear shape. This laser can stably output soliton molecules without any additional adjustment once the mode-locking self-starts. Moreover, it can achieve the transition from soliton molecule state to soliton state, and then to multi-pulse state by reducing the pumping power. The unconventional method of generating multi-pulses, combined with a wide pumping power range of 200--640 mW for maintaining mode-locking, allowed us to observe periodic optical spectra with two complete cycles for the first time. Based on the experimental facts, we develop a multistability model to explain this phenomenon. With its ability to switch between three stable states, this flexible laser can serve as a versatile toolbox for studying soliton dynamics.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of soliton and dissipative soliton in an ultrafast thulium (Tm) doped fiber laser based upon cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced mode-locking. The mode-locking is realized by periodically modulating the 2-µm signal through XPM that is activated by an injected 1.5-µm pulsed laser. Such a mechanism enables the laser to be mode-locked in various operation regimes without any real or artificial saturable absorbers. Thanks to the XPM pulling effect, the wavelength of the Tm-doped fiber laser can be tuned by adjusting the repetition frequency of the 1.5-µm pulsed laser. The maximum tuning ranges achieved in this work for the soliton and dissipative soliton regimes are respectively 11 nm and 15 nm. The outcomes of this work not only provide a continuously and controllably wavelength-tunable ultrafast laser but also offer a passively synchronized dual-color fiber laser system, which is promised for many important applications such as Raman spectroscopy, nonlinear frequency conversion systems, and multi-color pump-probe systems.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) fiber lasers attract great interest owing to their distinctive spatiotemporal characteristics and potential to generate high-energy pulse. Herein, we report an all few-mode fiber figure-eight laser STML by a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror at 1.0 m. The laser can generate single and multiple pulses at different central wavelengths. In particular, various types of bound-state solitons, such as conventional bound-state solitons and double bound-state solitons, are also achieved and further confirmed by the numerical simulations. The obtained results contribute to further understanding the nonlinear characteristics of STML fiber lasers and such a laser has potential applications in optical communications, especially in information coding.

Abstract:We report a passive mode-locked fiber laser which can realize single wavelength tuning and multi-wavelength spacing tuning simultaneously. The tuning range is from 1528 to 1560nm, up to three bands of soliton states can be output at the same time. These results are confirmed by nonlinear Schrödinger equation model based on splitstep Fourier method. In addition, we reveal a way to transform the multi-wavelength soliton state into Q-switched mode-locked state, which is period doubling. These results will promote the development of optical communication, optical sensing, multi-signal pulse emission.

Abstract:Recently, few-layerWS(2), as a novel two-dimensional (2D) material, has been discovered to possess both the saturable absorption effect and the huge nonlinear refractive index. In experiment, by taking advantage of the unique optical properties of 2D WS2, we fabricated a highly nonlinear photonic device using the pulsed laser beam to deposit the WS2 film onto a fiber taper. With the WS2-based fiber taper, we have demonstrated the single-and dual-wavelength soliton pulses in the erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) by properly adjusting the pump strength and the polarization state. According to the soliton theory, the pulse width is similar to 220 fs for the single-wavelength soliton, and similar to 585 and similar to 605 fs for the dual-wavelength soliton, respectively. The dual-wavelength soliton fiber laser exhibits the maximum output power of 10.1 mW and the pulse energy of similar to 1.14 nJ, when the pump power is increased to similar to 420 mW. Our findings suggest that WS2-based fiber taper could operate as both an excellent saturable absorber for obtaining a femtosecond pulse and a promising highly nonlinear photonic material for the multi-wavelength generation.

Abstract:High-power ultrafast fiber lasers operating at the 2 μm wavelength are extremely desirable for material processing, laser surgery, and nonlinear optics. Here we fabricated large-core (LC) double-cladding Tm-doped silica fiber via the sol-gel method. The sol-gel-fabricated Tm-doped silica (SGTS) fiber had a large core diameter of 30 μm with a high refractive index homogeneity (Δn=2×10−4). With the newly developed LC SGTS fiber as the gain fiber, high-power mode-locking was realized. By using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) as a mode locker, the LC SGTS fiber oscillator generated mode-locked pulses with an average output power as high as 1.0 W and a pulse duration of 23.9 ps at the wavelength of 1955.0 nm. Our research results show that the self-developed LC Tm-doped silica fiber via the sol-gel method is a promising gain fiber for generating high-power ultrafast lasers in the 2 μm spectral region.
