Abstract:Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), which feature a unique spatially non-uniform polarization distribution with an axis symmetry, have been attracting increasing attention due to their various potential applications. However, mainstream CVB lasers demonstrated so far are emitting in the near-infrared wavelength region. The development of mid-infrared (MIR) CVB lasers can greatly broaden their application areas, especially when operating in the mode-locking regime where high peak power ultrafast pulses can be produced. Here, we present the direct generation of MIR femtosecond CVBs from an Er-doped fluoride fiber laser. The mode-locking operation is realized by the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, accompanying with an intra-cavity CVB converter based on two S-waveplates. Both radially and azimuthally polarized beams in the form of mode-locking pulse trains are achieved in the experiment with a typical pulse width of 336 fs and a peak power of 7.3 kW at a repetition of 42.24 MHz. The center wavelength locates at around 2795 nm. This work can provide a solution for the direct generation of femtosecond CVBs in the MIR wavelength region and facilitate its application in fields such as micro-manufacturing and nanoparticle manipulation.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) in fiber lasers has attracted significant attention due to its wide scientific and industrial applications, and achieved great progress in the near-infrared wavelength range. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally a mid-infrared (MIR) STML laser based on a step-index multimode Er:ZBLAN fiber. The laser adopts a short linear cavity mode-locked by a large-relaxation-time saturable absorber, and generates stable 78.6 ps pulses at 2.79 μm with a repetition rate of 79.8 MHz. Through adjustment of the coupling condition, a wide variety of STML states are observed. Numerical simulations show that the modal dispersion is counteracted by the spatial filtering effect alone. This work provides a simple scheme for MIR fiber lasers to achieve STML, and helps to understand the underlying nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:An attempt was made to ascertain the influence of body weight on degenerative skeletal diseases in a group of 250 hospitalized patients suffering from gonarthrosis and/or lumbar syndrome. The current average body weight according to age, size and sex (Geigy Tables) were used as the standard. Patients with gonarthrosis were significantly overweight while patients with lumbar syndrome fell within the normal range. A prearthrosis or prearthritic deformity of the vertebral column or knee could be demonstrated in the majority of patients, particularly the younger ones. In most of the older patients, an age-induced reduction in the quality of cartilage and tissue of the intervertebral disk was already present. For the established casual significance of prearthroses, the only possible influence of body weight on the development of alterations is as a contributing factor, to functional strain. A statement cannot be made concerning the importance of this contributing factor for methodological reasons; an essential influence, however, is doubtful. Overweight alone does not tend to induce degenerative skeletal alterations under normal static and occupational conditions.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate Q-switching operation of a single-moded mid-infraredEr 3+ -doped ZBLAN (Er:ZBLAN) fiber laser based on an acousto-optic modulator. The fiber laser can produce steady Q-switched pulses as short as 24.8 ns at an average output power of 45.7 mW with a single transverse mode, corresponding to a peak power of 18.4 kW. In addition, a wavelength tuning range from 2715.4 to 2790.4 nm is also achieved in the Q-switching regime at the repetition rate of 1 kHz. The experimental results demonstrate the huge potential of producing mid-infrared energetic and wavelength tunable short-pulses in an actively Q-switched Er:ZBLAN fiber laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a widely tunable single-frequency Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating on a 4F9/2→4I9/2 transition band. An uncoated germanium (Ge) plate serves as a narrow-bandwidth etalon and is inserted in the cavity to achieve a single longitudinal mode selection. Wavelength tuning from 3373.8 nm to 3718.5 nm was demonstrated by using a blazed diffraction grating at 3.5 µm. At the emission peak of 3465.6 nm, the laser yields over 100 mW single-frequency output power, with a 3 dB linewidth <6.9 MHz, and a slope efficiency (with respect to the incident 1990 nm pump power) of 20.3%. Such a tunable mid-infrared single-frequency fiber laser may serve as a versatile laser source in spectroscopy and sensing applications.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:<p>A widely wavelength tunable mode locked Er-doped fiber laser oscillator based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect was demonstrated. By intentionally introducing a position-and-width adjustable slit and a pair of reflective gratings into the cavity, which worked as a wavelength and bandwidth tunable spectral filter, continuous wavelength tunable mode locked operation from 1532 nm to 1594 nm was achieved, corresponding to a tuning range of 62 nm, which is a new record for mode locked continuously wavelength-tunable single mode Er-doped fiber oscillators based on nonlinear polarization rotation, to the best of our knowledge. During the wavelength tuning, the pulse durations for different wavelengths changed slightly and closed to the Fourier-transform limit. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum of the output pulses is higher than 89 dB over the entire wavelength tuning range, superior to the typical SNR of 50–70 dB reported in most papers. In addition, the pulse duration could be tuned from 904 fs to 1339 fs by adjusting the width of the slit, for which the corresponding spectral bandwidth changed from 3.4 nm to 1.7 nm.</p>

Abstract:We report a wavelength-tunable spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Benefiting from both the saturable absorption and tunable filtering effect of the NPR, not only the multimode continuous wave (MM CW) but also fundamental spatiotemporal dissipative soliton pulse and its harmonic mode-locking (HML) can realize wavelength adjustment with the maximum adjustable range of 39 nm by simply adjusting the waveplates. Moreover, the maximum output power of the laser can reach 42.2 mW, 115.3 mW, 164.2 mW, and 151.5 mW for MM CW, fundamental, 2nd, and 3rd order HML spatiotemporal dissipative soliton, respectively. This work provides a new platform for exploring wavelength-tunable STML fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report a single-wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser. The single wavelength can be tuned from 1537.49 nm to 1608.06 nm by introducing a Sagnac loop filter. As far as we know, this is the widest single-wavelength tuning range achieved in an erbium-doped mode-locked all-fiber laser based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The laser's pulse width changes from 549 fs to 808 fs throughout the tuning process, the maximum average output power is 5.72 mW, and the single-pulse energy is 0.34 nJ at a central wavelength of 1556.53 nm. This laser source can serve as an efficient tool for applications that require a broad tunability range. The combination of femtosecond pulses and extensive wavelength tuning capabilities makes this laser system highly valuable in fields such as fiber optic communications, spectroscopy, sensing, and other applications that benefit from ultrafast and tunable laser sources.

Abstract:We report a single- and dual-wavelength tuning at the C + L band in a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) mode-locked Er-doped all-fiber laser. The single-wavelength tuning range is 52 nm, and the dual-wavelength can vary from 1558 nm and 1581 nm to 1581 nm and 1606 nm, accompanied by a slight change in the spacing of the wavelengths. To our knowledge, this is the widest dual-wavelength tuning range achieved in an Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser. The optical spectrum of the dual wavelengths has no significant variation within 60 min, which indicates potential for applications such as dual-comb. Our work provides a compact and low-cost dual-wavelength all-fiber laser, which may facilitate the design and application of dual-wavelength sources.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of both continuous-wave (CW) and Q-switched cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) from a mid-infrared Er3+-doped ZBLAN (Er:ZBLAN) fiber laser at ∼ 2.8 µm. A customized S-waveplate is incorporated as the intracavity mode converter to achieve the mid-infrared CVBs. Switchable modes of CVBs between the radially and azimuthally polarized beam can be realized easily by manipulating the cavity conditions. A maximum output power of ∼250 mW is achieved for the CW CVBs. In the short-pulsed CVBs operation regime, both the active and passive Q-switching modes are realized with a pulse duration of hundreds of nanoseconds. The proposed mid-infrared cylindrical vector lasers can have significant potential for applications in biomedicine, optical trapping, material processing and optical communication.

Abstract:Ultrashort pulse lasers have the characteristics of narrow output pulse width, high peak power and wide spectrum, and are widely used in precision manufacturing, biomedical, quantum communication, national defense and military. In actual production and life, the wavelength tuning and switching of mode-locked fiber lasers have important applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a wavelength-tunable mode-locked fiber laser, which is a mode-locked ytterbium fiber laser working at 10.84MHz, and achieves wavelength-tuned output in the range of 1017~1029nm by adding tunable devices. This tunable and short pulse all-fiber laser has the advantages of simple structure, easy tuning, and good stability, and has a wide range of application prospects.

Abstract:A switchable and tunable dual-wavelength actively mode-locked fiber laser based on a dispersion tuning technique is proposed and demonstrated. Synchronous wavelength tuning of dual-wavelength operation with wavelength spacing of 22.9nm can be achieved up to 23.2nm by changing the modulation frequency. The proposed laser can operate in dual-wavelength or single-wavelength by simple adjustment of the polarization controller. Moreover, wavelength spacing can also be varied from 22 to 45nm at the cost of a reduced tuning range by changing the harmonic order, which is determined by the modulation frequency. These experimental observations agree well with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A tunable and narrow-bandwidth Q-switched ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) laser is investigated in this paper. The non-pumped YDF acts as a saturable absorber and, together with a Sagnac loop mirror, provides a dynamic spectral-filtering grating to achieve a narrow-linewidth Q-switched output. By adjusting an etalon-based tunable fiber filter, a tunable wavelength from 1027 nm to 1033 nm is obtained. When the pump power is 1.75 W, the Q-switched laser pulses with a pulse energy of 10.45 nJ, and a repetition frequency of 11.98 kHz and spectral linewidth of 112 MHz are obtained. This work paves the way for the generation narrow-linewidth Q-switched lasers with tunable wavelengths in conventional ytterbium, erbium, and thulium fiber bands to address critical applications such as coherent detection, biomedicine, and nonlinear frequency conversion.

Abstract:Mode-locked pulse outputs with switchable single/dual wavelengths and widely tunable spectral bandwidth are demonstrated by fully exploiting multiple soliton formation mechanisms combining single-wall carbon nanotube, intracavity loss tuning and nonlinear polarization rotation. An isolator with single-polarization fiber pigtails is additionally inserted in a ring fiber laser cavity to introduce polarization-dependent loss modulation for gain profile tuning and nonlinear polarization rotation. Mode-locked by a home-made single-wall carbon nanotube saturable absorber, switchable single/dual-wavelength pulses centered in the 1530- or/and 1550-nm gain regions of erbium-doped fiber are experimentally observed by tuning the intracavity loss to tilt the gain profile. Moreover, the spectral bandwidths of single-wavelength pulses centered in the 1530- and 1550 nm regions could be continuously tuned from 2.4 to 4.0 nm, and 2.7 to 9.0 nm, respectively. Such widely tunable spectral bandwidths are attributed to hybrid mode-locked mechanisms combining the nonlinear polarization rotation and single-wall carbon nanotube. Our results give a deep insight into the well-controlled gain profile tuning and provide a relatively simple setup and method to obtain bandwidth-tunable, wavelength-switchable pulse outputs, showing the potential to meet various requirements of ultrafast laser applications.
