Abstract:Soliton "molecules", i.e., bound states of two or several solitons, represent a fundamental concept, which manifests itself in various nonlinear systems. They are dynamically similar to chemical molecules, attracting great interest to fundamental studies and offering potential applications (such as multilevel encoding of optical data). Here, the study demonstrates a novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds (DSMC) built as a hybrid bound state of multiple bound soliton pulses carried by two wavelengths in a fiber laser. The DSMCs are maintained by two different binding mechanisms, viz., the self-phase modulation (SPM) interaction between temporal solitons at the same wavelength, mediated by their tails, and the cross-phase modulation (XPM) interaction between solitons at different wavelengths. They also exhibit unique temporal and spectral vibration profiles. Both static DSMCs and ones with robust internal vibrations are generated experimentally in the fiber laser, and numerically as solutions of the corresponding dissipative nonlinear model. The findings reported here expand the concept of soliton molecules and further promote their similarity to chemical molecules. Novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds that are built as hybrid bound states of multiple solitons carried by two different optical wavelengths are demonstrated in mode-locked fiber lasers. The vibration dynamics of DSMCs are experimental and theoretically revealed, suggesting directions for further work in nonlinear fiber optics, as well as using soliton bound states for emulation of molecular dynamics. image

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of stable single solitons and soliton molecules in a 2-mu m thulium-holmium-doped fiber laser mode-locked through the nonlinear polarization evolution technique within an anomalously dispersive cavity. Single 0.65 nJ solitons feature a 7.3 nm spectral FWHM and 540 fs temporal duration, yielding a time bandwidth product close to the Fourier-transform limitation. Under the same pumping power of 740 mW, stable out-of-phase twin-soliton molecules, featuring a temporal separation of 2.5 ps between the two similar to 700 fs pulses, are generated in a deterministic way, while the central wavelength of the soliton molecules can be tuned from 1920 to 1940 nm. Finally, we present strong experimental evidence of vibrating soliton molecules. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the discovery of quantized pulse separations between phase-locked soliton pairs in a thulium-doped fiber laser at the wavelength range of 2 μm. The soliton pairs are formed by the nonlinear binding interaction between the solitons and dispersive waves, and the two lowest-order Kelly sidebands drive the interaction in these soliton pairs and fix the pulse separations of the soliton pairs to a discrete set of values. Our experimental observations are well confirmed by numerical simulations.

Abstract:We report on the experimental investigations of various self-organized structures of soliton molecules in a thulium doped fiber laser mode-locked by a monolayer MoS2 saturable absorber. With the alteration of cavity parameters, soliton pairs, soliton triplets, and soliton quartets were successively generated, and the short-term and long-term stabilities were tested, exhibiting potential coding alphabet extension from the traditional binary coding scheme to higher coding scheme in fiber communication. Soliton pairs with the phase-difference of pi, +/-pi/2, and 0 have been observed systematically in the same thulium-doped fiber cavity, for the first time. Our results might benefit the fundamental physics research of nonlinear dynamics in fiber lasers at the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength fiber lasers have the advantages of low cost, easy integration withfiber systems, and wide tunable range, which is the key component of dense wavelength divisionmultiplexing (DWDM). 2D MoTe2micro-sheets have drawn lots of researchers' attention due totheir anisotropic layered structure and high optical adsorption. Evanescent-field (EF) deviceshave many applications in multi-wavelength and high-power fiber lasers. The integration ofMoTe2micro-sheets and an EF device is able to combine their advantages. Here, we reporton the experimental observation of multi-wavelength solitons based on EF interaction withpolarization-sensitive MoTe2micro-sheet. Dual-wavelength conventional solitons (CSs) andswitchable dual-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) are emitted by the proposed fiber laser.Different solitons can be effectively tuned by optimizing pump power and the state of thepolarization controller. By adjusting the waveplates inside the cavity, not only the spatiotemporal mode-locking state with a stable single pulse but also soliton molecules are observed. Transition of different operation states with pump power is given. The results would be beneficial for further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics in spatiotemporal mode-locked MMF lasers. Abstract:We report the first experimental observation, to the best of our knowledge, of soliton molecules in a robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked fiber laser with a nonreciprocal phase bias that results in a low self-starting threshold and stable mode locking. Through elaborately tuning the waveplate in the cavity, calibrating the laser pulse from conventional soliton to soliton molecules is implemented, and versatile soliton molecules including harmonic soliton pairs, tightly or loosely bound soliton quartets, multipulse bound solitons are achieved and manipulated at different pump powers. Theoretical investigations are established to elucidate the soliton molecules spectral characteristics with various phase differences and time separations in the cavity that elicit good concurrence with achieved experimental results. The achieved results both rich the nonlinear dynamics in fiber lasers and pave the potential applications for this excellent architecture fiber laser.

Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Optical microfibers can show very strong normal dispersion (as high as 2700 ps2/km) around 2 μm, a highly desired feature for dispersion management in ultrafast lasers. Here we report a dissipative soliton fiber laser at 2 μm enabled by an optical microfiber. The full width at half-maximum of the optical spectrum was about 50 nm, and its flatness could be attributed to the third-order dispersion compensation provided by the optical microfiber. The pulse duration was measured to be 195 fs after a dechirping single-mode fiber. Our results suggest a new route to dissipative soliton fiber lasers at 2 μm, with a wide and flat spectrum and thus a short dechirped pulse.

Abstract:The generation and evolution of soliton molecules are investigated theoretically with the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations based on a vector field. The formation of second‐and third‐order soliton molecules is investigated. Besides this, various‐order soliton molecules from the 6th order to the 13th order have been observed by adjusting small‐signal gain and phase delay. Finally, we analyze the reason for the soliton molecule generation. Exploring soliton molecules is helpful for optical communication as well as for fiber laser design.

Abstract:Benefiting from ultrafast temporal resolution, broadband spectral bandwidth, as well as high peak power, passively mode-locked fibre lasers have attracted growing interest and exhibited great potential from fundamental sciences to industrial and military applications. As a nonlinear system containing complex interactions from gain, loss, nonlinearity, dispersion, etc., ultrafast fibre lasers deliver not only conventional single soliton but also soliton bunching with different types. In analogy to molecules consisting of several atoms in chemistry, soliton molecules (in other words, bound solitons) in fibre lasers are of vital importance for in-depth understanding of the nonlinear interaction mechanism and further exploration for high-capacity fibre-optic communications. In this Review, we summarize the state-of-the-art advances on soliton molecules in ultrafast fibre lasers. A variety of soliton molecules with different numbers of soliton, phase-differences and pulse separations were experimentally observed owing to the flexibility of parameters such as mode-locking techniques and dispersion control. Numerical simulations clearly unravel how different nonlinear interactions contribute to formation of soliton molecules. Analysis of the stability and the underlying physical mechanisms of bound solitons bring important insights to this field. For a complete view of nonlinear optical phenomena in fibre lasers, other dissipative states such as vibrating soliton pairs, soliton rains, rogue waves and coexisting dissipative solitons are also discussed. With development of advanced real-time detection techniques, the internal motion of different pulsing states is anticipated to be characterized, rendering fibre lasers a versatile platform for nonlinear complex dynamics and various practical applications.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) has been demonstrated. In this laser, mode-locking is achieved based on equivalent saturation absorption of the NOLM, while the dual-wavelength operation is attributed to the online birefringent fiber filter composed of a polarizer and a section of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). The wavelength spacing of dual-wavelength spectrum can be adjusted through changing the PMF length, and the central wavelengths can be tuned through rotating the polarization controllers. It is also found that at the two central wavelengths of the dual-wavelength pulse, switchable single wavelength mode-locked pulse can be generated. In addition, noise-like pulses with broadband spectra can be generated, when two kinds of mode-locking mechanisms conflict. The dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser has important potential applications in the laser detection, sensing and other fields. Its rich dynamics also provides a system platform for basic research on laser physics.

Abstract:Self-assembly of optical solitons propagating in nonlinear dissipative systems spreads the concept of soliton molecules. Assisted with the real-time spectral interferometry, plentiful internal dynamics has been probed within the multi-pulse patterns, emphasizing the striking analogies with the matter molecules. Therefrom, these particle-like behaviors would yield more intriguing landscapes towards the extended degrees of freedom considering increased constituents. Here, we transfer the concept of 'isomer' to the experimental investigation on the unexplored isomeric dynamics of soliton molecules in parallel. Particularly, two isomers for soliton triplets and four isomers for soliton quadruplets are captured under different self-assembled forms, within each of which the binding separations and relative phases of the constituents are governed by mutual soliton interactions. With the diverse separation-phase evolving trajectories mapped in the interaction plane, the detailed insights of the temporal distribution and the transient dynamics are displayed with respect to a panorama of the isomeric dynamics. The perspective of optical isomers shed new light on the analogy with matter molecules, and the underlying isomeric dynamics may stimulate the artificial manipulation of various soliton molecules for ultrafast applications.

Abstract:A complete collection of two-soliton bound states exhibiting ±π/2, 0, and π phase differences was realized in experiment in a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with a graphene saturable absorber for the first time. The graphene mode-locker possesses modulation depth of about 6% and saturation fluency of about 300 μJ/cm2. By carefully adjusting the polarization controller in the laser cavity under appropriate pumping power, diverse soliton molecules with distinct temporal separations and different phase relationships were obtained. Our experimental findings provide clear evidence that stable soliton pairs with ±π/2, 0, and π phase differences can be tightly bounded in fiber lasers as intrinsic attractors, which is independent of cavity details such as the mode-locker we choose. In addition, our numerical simulations unravel the influence of nonlinear properties of a saturable absorber on bound states. It is found that mode-lockers with different modulation depth and/or saturation intensity play a role in interpulse separation and individual pulsewidth of generated soliton molecules while keeping the relative phases between bound solitons unchanged. This paper is instructive to explain current research works on bound states in fiber lasers with sorts of saturable absorbers and is of importance to understand the dissipative dynamics of soliton molecules.

Abstract:Soliton molecules (SMs) are stable bound states between solitons. SMs in fiber lasers are intensively investigated and embody analogies with matter molecules. Recent experimental studies on SMs formed by bright solitons, including soliton-pair, soliton-triplet or even soliton-quartet molecules, are intensive. However, study on soliton-binding states between bright and dark solitons is limited. In this work, the formation of such novel SMs in a fiber laser with near-zero group velocity dispersion (ZGVD) is reported. Physically, these SMs are formed because of the incoherent cross-phase modulation of light and constitute a new form of SMs that are conceptually analog to the multi-atom molecules in chemistry. Our research results could assist the understanding of the dynamics of large SM complexes. These findings may also motivate potential applications in large-capacity transmission and all-optical information storage.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of soliton and dissipative soliton in an ultrafast thulium (Tm) doped fiber laser based upon cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced mode-locking. The mode-locking is realized by periodically modulating the 2-µm signal through XPM that is activated by an injected 1.5-µm pulsed laser. Such a mechanism enables the laser to be mode-locked in various operation regimes without any real or artificial saturable absorbers. Thanks to the XPM pulling effect, the wavelength of the Tm-doped fiber laser can be tuned by adjusting the repetition frequency of the 1.5-µm pulsed laser. The maximum tuning ranges achieved in this work for the soliton and dissipative soliton regimes are respectively 11 nm and 15 nm. The outcomes of this work not only provide a continuously and controllably wavelength-tunable ultrafast laser but also offer a passively synchronized dual-color fiber laser system, which is promised for many important applications such as Raman spectroscopy, nonlinear frequency conversion systems, and multi-color pump-probe systems.
