Abstract:Modulation of chiroptics, chiral phenomena of tonic switches. One of the most effective methods for applications, including chirality-specific biosensing and pho- the optical properties, is, pivotal in a variety of advanced :achieving this control is assembly of the optical moieties into chiral nanostructures. Lipopeptide self-assemblies have been extensively employed as soft templates to organize composites into low-dimensional superstructures due to their rigidity and ease of functionalization. Therefore, an appealing approach is to provide chiroptical control by using lipopeptide self assemblies as templates to assemble chromophores. Herein, two lipopeptidic molecules, namely, C-14-FFK and C-14-FK, composed of phenylalanine and lysine residues conjugated to a myristic acid chain, were custom-designed. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations indicated that C-14-FFK self-assembled to wide, slightly left-handed nanoribbons, while C-14-FK formed narrow, intensely right-handed nanofibers. The different chirality was derived from the distinct self-assembly driving forces, especially the molecular bending dimensions. These superstructures' presented an ideal capability to serve as soft templates to assemble porphyrin (ZnTPyP) through noncovalent electrostatic attractive interactions, or assemble the phenolic groups through covalent conjugation to peptide backbones. The distinct exciton coupling of the chromophores allowed their achiral optics to become chiral, showing negative Cotton effect when templated by nanoribbons and positive Cotton effect with nanofibers as templates. Following replacement of the lipopeptides with their D-type enantiomers, the handedness of the superstructures and the associated chiroptics were reversed and presented "mirror" symmetric CD signals to their L-type counterparts. These findings may pave the way to the formation of morphologically and chioptically controllable nanomaterials.

Abstract:Advanced multifunctional devices increasingly rely on challenging complex shapes for their functions. 3D printing offers a solution but is often limited by the fabrication speed and/or material diversity. 4D printing based on digitally controlled 2D-to-3D transformation is advantageous in speed, but the accessible shapes are limited and integration of multiple materials is difficult. We report herein a concept that significantly extends the technological scope by combining 4D printing with modular assembly. Specifically, 4D photo-printed structures based on dynamically crosslinked polymers can be assembled in a modular fashion by interfacial bond exchange. Complex 3D objects with tailorable multiple materials can consequently be produced. This allows the fabrication of sophisticated shape-memory devices including a 3D Miura-patterned structure with zero Poisson's ratio and a Kresling-patterned cylindrical structure with superior mechanical stability. Our approach extends the possibilities for the future development of multifunctional devices with seamless integration of material, structure, and function.
Triple-Modulated Chiral Inversion of Co-Assembly System Based on Alanine Amphiphile and Cyanostilbene Derivative

Abstract:The construction of chiroptical materials with controllable chirality is of special importance in biology and chemistry. Although tunable chirality can be realized in various systems, it remains a fundamental challenge to realize multimodulated chiral inversion. Herein, we report that chiral alanine derivative and fluorescent cyanostilbene derivative co-assemble to prepare supramolecular chiral systems, where twist nanofibers with totally inverted supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence are obtained through stoichiometric modulation. The supramolecular handedness can be inverted by means of altering the cooling rate and incorporating metal ions. The mechanism study reveals that the synergistic effect among hydrogen bonds, coordination interactions, and π-π stacking interactions contributes to the chirality inversion. This work establishes an effective strategy to precisely modulate supramolecular chirality in multiple ways, which shows great potential in developing smart chiroptical materials capable of achieving complex functionalities.

Origami-Inspired Chiral Metamaterials with Tunable Circular Dichroism Through Mechanically Guided Three-Dimensional Assembly

Abstract:Chiral metamaterials with artificially engineered subwavelength structures can effectively couple incident waves and lead diverse electromagnetic responses to various circular polarizations. Here, we designed and fabricated an origami-inspired reconfigurable three-dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterial, whose circular dichroism can be dynamically controlled by simple mechanical stretch of its bonded elastomer substrate. The chiral metamaterial was obtained from a patterned planar achiral metasurface through mechanically guided 3D assembly based on the prestrain approach, which ensures deterministic and uniform deformations for each building block during stretching. Numerical simulations and experimental observations were carried out to illustrate the deformation mechanism and the electromagnetic response of the metamaterials under the applied strain. It is shown that the transmissions and chiroptical activities can be continuously tuned from complete spin selectivity to partial spin selectivity when the applied strain increases. The maximum circular dichroism was experimentally measured as high as 0.98, which can be even adjusted to near zero by mechanical stretching. Our work demonstrated an easily operated and promising way to control the chirality of origami-inspired metamaterial in the microwave region, which can be further extended to the terahertz frequency biosensing, imaging, and spectroscope.

Abstract:Flexible photonic textiles constructed by sustainable cholesteric organization are very promising to achieve a combination of chiroptical structural colors, mechanical robustness, sustainability, and environment stability. However, the efficient assembly of well-ordered cholesteric nanoarchitectures on flexible textiles in a scalable and patternable manner remains a grand challenge. In this study, we develop an efficient and scalable approach to construct large area chiroptical biotextiles using renewable and bioenabled cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as building blocks. This hierarchical assembly enables cholesteric photonic CNCs "cast" in situ, in a seamlessly tessellated design, onto topography-tailored textiles to form a strong interlocked multilayered structure. The resulting hierarchical architecture not only comprises strong photonic-photonic coupling to synergistically enhance the chiroptical properties with tunable wavelengths but also leads to impressive mechanical and optical stability against external mechanical forces and extreme environments. More importantly, through regulating the localized photonic band of the preformed chiroptical textiles by small molecules (e.g., water and glucose), customized colored patterns can be easily generated in large scale that are highly responsive to multistimuli, including chiral polarized light, view angle, and solvent. This chiroptical biotextile is a promising next-generation biomimetic photonic material for defense, aviation, and marine and aerospace special applications.
Achiral substituent- and stoichiometry-controlled inversion of supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence in ternary co-assemblies

Abstract:Handedness inversion of supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in assembled systems containing more than two components with higher complexity is of prominent importance to simulate biological multicomponent species and design advanced chiral materials, but it remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we have successfully developed ternary co-assembly systems based on aromatic amino acids, vinylnaphthalene derivatives and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene with effective chirality transfer. Notably, the handedness of supramolecular chirality and CPL can be readily inverted by changing the residues of amino acids, the substituents of achiral vinylnaphthalene derivatives, or by adjusting the stoichiometric ratio. The hydrogen bonds, charge transfer interactions, and steric hindrance are proved to be the crucial factors for the chirality inversion. This flexible control over chirality not only offers insights into developing multicomponent chiral materials with desirable handedness from simple molecular building blocks, but also is of practical value for use in chiroptics, chiral sensing, and photoelectric devices.
Helical Self-Assembly-Induced Singlet–Triplet Emissive Switching in a Mechanically Sensitive System

Abstract:In nanoscience, chirality has shown a significant ability to tune materials' electronic properties, whereas imposing macrochirality into the regulation of singlet triplet features of organic optoelectronics remains a challenging research topic. Since the tuning for singlet and triplet excited-state properties in a single pi-functional molecule connects to its multicolor luminescent application and potential improvement of internal quantum efficiency, we here report that supramolecular chirality can be employed to toggle the singlet and triplet emissions in a well designed asterisk-shaped molecule. Employing a hexathiobenzene-based single luminophore as a prototype and functionalizing it with chiral alpha-lipoiate side groups, we find that helical nanoarchitectures can accordingly form in mixed DMF/H2O solution. On this basis, switching between fluorescence and phosphorescence of the material can be realized upon helical self-assembly and dissociation. Such a behavior can be attributed to a helical-conformation-dependent manipulation of the intersystem crossing. Furthermore, reversible mechanoluminescence of the corresponding solid sample was also observed to rely on an analogous molecular self-assembly alternation. These results can probably provide new visions for the development of next-generation supramolecular chiral functional materials.

Abstract:The emergence, transference, amplification, and memory of chiroptical activity in supramolecular assemblies, including circularly polarized absorbance and circularly polarized luminescence, remain significant challenges. Herein, an achiral pyridine-substituted coumarin derivative and chiral additives can coassemble into helical nanostructures with fine chiroptical activity via subtle hydrogen-bonding interactions. The resulting supramolecular assemblies remain optically active even after the removal of chiral additives, demonstrating supramolecular chirality can be remembered in the assemblies. More importantly, the removed chiral elements can be reused to achieve continuous circulation and amplification of chirality. This work presents insight into the emergence, transference, amplification, and memory of chirality in a supramolecular assembly system and could be applied to the manufacturing of chiroptical materials.

Abstract:A novel patterning paradigm for structural colors is demonstrated through on‐demand visible‐light‐actuated self‐assembly of cholesteric liquid crystals induced by binary chiral systems. By leveraging the strategy of cooperation and conflict, precise manipulation of the chiral nanostructures enables control over multiple optical degrees of freedom, including adjustable circular polarization, bidirectional photochromism, and manipulable photonic bands. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) with chiral nanostructures take on great significance in light modulation for optical devices, especially involving the features of circularly polarized and dynamic structural colors. However, on‐demand self‐assembly by photoprogramming still remains a challenge that is ascribed to the unpredictable variation of the helical superstructures in the existing CLCs induced by light‐driven chiral switches. Here, novel binary chiral systems are designed to construct visible‐light‐actuated CLCs with multi‐degrees of freedom, including adjustable circular polarization, bidirectional photochromism, and manipulable photonic bands. Such systems consist of an o‐fluoroazobenzene‐containing chiral switch and an inert chiral dopant, whose interaction dominates the strategies of chiral cooperation or conflict to determine the CLC handedness as well as shift direction of the selective reflection. Particularly, the precise tuning range of the structural color is tailored by programmable helical twisting power to enable diverse paradigms of light‐actuated patterning. The unprecedented quantitative manipulation of circularly polarized structural colors offers unique photonic attributes for applications in information encoding and multiplexed communication.

A programmable wafer-scale chiroptical heterostructure of twisted aligned carbon nanotubes and phase change materials

Abstract:The ability to design and dynamically control chiroptical responses in solid-state matter at wafer scale enables new opportunities in various areas. Here we present a full stack of computer-aided designs and experimental implementations of a dynamically programmable, unified, scalable chiroptical heterostructure containing twisted aligned one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and non-volatile phase change materials (PCMs). We develop a software infrastructure based on high-performance machine learning frameworks, including differentiable programming and derivative-free optimization, to efficiently optimize the tunability of both excitonic reciprocal and linear-anisotropy-induced nonreciprocal circular dichroism (CD) responses. We experimentally implement designed heterostructures with wafer-scale self-assembled aligned CNTs and deposited PCMs. We dynamically program reciprocal and nonreciprocal CD responses by inducing phase transitions of PCMs, and nonreciprocal responses display polarity reversal of CD upon sample flipping in broadband spectral ranges. All experimental results agree with simulations. Further, we demonstrate that the vertical dimension of heterostructure is scalable with the number of stacking layers and aligned CNTs play dual roles - the layer to produce CD responses and the Joule heating electrode to electrically program PCMs. This heterostructure platform is versatile and expandable to a library of 1D nanomaterials and electro-optic materials for exploring novel chiral phenomena and photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Interfacing Flexible Design and Social Self-Sorting Enables Comprehensive Control over Photophysical and Self-Assembly Properties of Supramolecular Polymers

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assembly offers an intriguing approach to construct microarchitectures, which combine properties of their molecular constituents with dynamic supramolecular features. Control over intermolecular interactions and their resulting properties can sometimes be achieved by targeted design. However, it is often unfeasible to transfer the insights gained from a specific supramolecular synthon to another chromophore without tedious synthetic work guided by trial and error. Herein we demonstrate how a flexible molecular design approach enables access to a diverse library of photophysical properties, which can be further diversified by social self-sorting strategies using a second supramolecular building block as a modulator. By intercalation into the supramolecular polymer the modulator can disrupt interchromophore interactions and modulate the ensembles emissive properties across the visible color space by simply adjusting the ratio between the two building blocks. Furthermore, by combining a chromophore appended synthon with a different morphology than the modulator the mesoscopic size distribution of the co-assemblies can be modified to resemble either of its constituents. Finally, the thermodynamic stability of the modulated polymers can be adjusted by varying the amount of solubilizing alkyl chains in the ensemble. Crucially, this peripheral stabilization approach does not affect the engineered photophysical or supramolecular properties. Our results demonstrate how flexible molecular design enriched by a supramolecular modulator can offer access to a wide variety of photophysical properties and enable unique fine-tuning of various supramolecular properties.

Abstract:A novel class of polymers and oligomers of chiral folding chirality has been designed and synthesized, showing structurally compacted triple-column/multiple-layer frameworks. Both uniformed and differentiated aromatic chromophoric units were successfully constructed between naphthyl piers of this framework. Screening monomers, catalysts, and catalytic systems led to the success of asymmetric catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura polycouplings. Enantio-and diastereochemistry were unambiguously determined by X-ray structural analysis and concurrently by comparison with a similar asymmetric induction by the same catalyst in the asymmetric synthesis of a chiral three-layered product. The resulting chiral polymers exhibit intense fluorescence activity in a solid form and solution under specific wavelength irradiation.
A Subtle Change in the Flexible Achiral Spacer Does Matter in Supramolecular Chirality: Two-Fold Odd-Even Effect in Polymer Assemblies

Abstract:Precise control over the chirality and morphologies of polymer assemblies, a remaining challenge for both chemists and materials scientists, is receiving ever-increasing attention in the recent years. Herein, we report the subtle manipulation of the achiral spacers from the chiral stereocenter to the azobenzene (Azo) unit, of which the chiroptical consistency or chiroptical inversion of self-assemblies could be successfully controlled and present "two-fold" odd-even effect. Furthermore, morphological transitions from 0D spherical micelles, 1D worms, and nanowires to 3D vesicles, spindle- and dumbbell-shaped vesicles were also unexpectedly found to exhibit odd-even correlations. These observations were collectively elucidated by mesomorphic properties, stacking modes, chiroptical dynamics, and stimuli-responsive behaviors. Negligible modifications to the spacer structures can enable remarkable modulation of supramolecular chirality and anisotropic topologies in polymer assemblies, which is of great significance for the design of complex chiral functional polymers.
Tunable Chirality of Self-Assembled Dipeptides Mediated by Bipyridine Derivative

Abstract:Supramolecular peptide assemblies have been widely used for the development of biomedical, catalytical, and optical materials with chiral nanostructures in view of the intrinsic chirality of peptides. However, the assembly pathway and chiral transformation behavior of various peptides remain largely elusive especially for the transient assemblies under out-of-equilibrium conditions. Herein, the N-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl-protected phenylalanine-tyrosine dipeptide (Fmoc-FY) was used as a peptide assembly platform, which showed that the assembly proceeds multistep evolution. The original spheres caused by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) can nucleate and elongate into the formation of right-handed helices which were metastable and easily converted into microribbons. Interestingly, a bipyridine derivative can be introduced to effectively control the assembly pathway and induce the formation of thermodynamically stable right-handed or left-handed helices at different stoichiometric ratios. In addition, the chiral assembly can also be regulated by ultrasound or enzyme catalysis. This minimalistic system not only broadens the nucleation-elongation mechanisms of protein aggregates but also promotes the controllable design and development of chiral biomaterials.
Supramolecular Self-Assembly Of Chiral Helical Tubular Polymers With Amplified Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Highly programmed self-assembly of supramolecular architectures with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been a big challenge in developing chiroptic materials. We report here self-assembly of two chiral tubular supramolecular structures based on arrays of helices built from chiral bispyridyl biphenol-/spinol-phosphoric acid. Organic molecules integrated in the double or triple helical structures display obviously enhanced Cotton effects and CPL emissions. The polymers afford a two to three-fold increase of the luminescence dissymmetry factor |g(lum)| in solutions, which reach as high as 3.5 x 10(-3), due to the amplification effect of CPL arising from the strong intermolecular couping of organic monomers. In solution, the handedness of CPL is determined by the inherent chirality of organic monomers. In the solid state, the CPL signal of one polymer is kept and reversed, which follows the handedness of the helical assembly, whereas the signals of another disappeared owing to an aggregation-caused quenching effect. These two polymers are rare examples of CPL supramolecular materials having been crystallographically characterized. This study provides insights into a structural and molecular basis for designing ordered polymeric structures with advanced chiroptic properties.

Abstract:Three thienopyrrole‐fused thiadiazole (TPT) fluorescent dyes featuring a common amide linker and different alkoxy substituents on peripheral trialkoxybenzene moieties were synthesized, and their self‐assembly behavior in solution was investigated. The obtained results revealed a substantial steric effect of the alkoxy substituents on the supramolecular polymerization mechanism, which results from a combination of π‐stacking and hydrogen (H)‐bonding interactions. Detailed spectroscopic measurements revealed that with increasing steric demand of the substituents, the supramolecular polymerization processes in pure methylcyclohexane (MCH) or a mixture of MCH and toluene become temperature‐sensitive and enthalpically favorable, resulting in a change from the isodesmic assembly mechanism to the cooperative mechanism. Theoretical calculations suggested that in TPTs with bulky substituents, steric hindrance causes the H‐bonding array of the amide moieties to be aligned along the stacking axis of the π‐systems; thus, the H‐bonding interactions are strengthened compared to those in TPTs with less bulky substituents, compensating for the weakened π‐stacking interactions. A chiral TPT derivative with (S) stereogenic centers was found to form homochiral helical supramolecular assemblies that generate discernible circularly polarized luminescence. Achiral TPTs also generate helical assemblies to which preferential helicity can be imparted through the external chiral bias of the solvents (R)‐ and (S)‐limonene.

The molecule could self-assemble to the trans-isomer in aqueous solution, which is accompanied by strong CD signals. Both trans- and cis-isomers are thermally stable, and the high conversion photoswitching between the trans- and cis-isomers with good fatigue resistance and reversibility, can be achieved using different wavelengths of UV irradiation. Furthermore, the optical chirality-CD was also modulated by UV irradiation. According to the TEM images and dynamic light scattering data, the photoswitching process involves self-assembly/disassembly from approximately 150 nm spherical particles to 18 nm irregular particles. We proposed a rational strategy using light-driven self-assembly for a molecular photoswitch in which optical chirality can be modulated by light irradiation in aqueous media.

Abstract:Bottom-up self-assembly is regarded as an alternative way to manufacture series of microstructures in many fields, especially chiral microstructures, which attract tremendous attention because of their optical micromanipulations and chiroptical spectroscopies. However, most of the self-assembled microstructures cannot be tuned after processing, which largely hinders their broad applications. Here, we demonstrate a promising manufacturing strategy for switchable microstructures by combining the flexibility of femtosecond laser printing induced capillary force self-assembly and the temperature-responsive characteristics of smart hydrogels. Through designing asymmetric cross-link density, the printed microarchitectures can be deformed in the opposite direction and assembled into switchable ordered microstructures driven by capillary forces under different temperatures. Finally, the assembled chiral microstructures with switchable opposite handedness are realized, which shows tunable vortical dichroism. The proposed strategy holds potential applications in the fields of chiral photonics, chiral sensing, and so on.

Abstract:Supramolecular assemblies with chirality inversion were developed using a co-assembly system comprising solvent monomers and a pyridine-cholesterol gelator. The polarity-dependent chiralities were captured in situ through photopolymerization, enabling the formation of multi-color circularly polarized luminescence films.
