Abstract:This study explores factors that may explain information disclosure behavior on Facebook and provides understanding of each factor's contribution in explaining such behavior. Factors tested in this study are drawn from theories (e.g., social contract theory and uses and gratification theory) and constructs (e.g., trust/self-disclosure relationships, time spent on Facebook, number of Facebook friends, and gender difference). Findings suggest the potential of all the factors examined in this study as frameworks to explain self-disclosure behavior on Facebook. This social media-specific study offers evidence that these theories may have implications that are different from the current e-commerce literature on self-disclosure. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:This study drew on existing research and three behavioral intention models to develop the beginning of a new model to explain why college students share their locations on Facebook. Findings showed that students were more likely to disclose their location on Facebook if their friends did so, a concept called subjective norm. Results also showed that subjective norm had an indirect effect on whether people disclosed their location, mediated through people's attitude toward disclosure, while controlling for usefulness of disclosing. Collectively, this model explained 61% of the variance in why college students share locations on Facebook. Findings are discussed in relation to behavioral-intention models, and practical implications for social media companies are offered. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
The Influence of Personality Traits and Social Networks on the Self-Disclosure Behavior of Social Network Site Users

Abstract:Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to determine the influence and interaction of social networks and personality traits on the self-disclosure behavior of social network site (SNS) users. According to social capital theory and the Big Five personality model, the authors hypothesized that social capital factors would affect the accuracy and amount of self-disclosure behavior and that personality traits would moderate this effect.Design/methodology/approach– A survey was conducted to collect data from 207 SNS users. The questionnaire was administered in university classrooms and libraries and via e-mail. The measurement model and structural model were examined by using LISREL 8.8 and SmartPLS 2.0.Findings– Based on the path analysis, the authors identified several interesting patterns to explain self-disclosure behavior on SNSs. First, the centrality of SNS users has a positive effect on their amount of self-disclosure. Moreover, people who are more extroverted disclose personal information that is more accurate with the level of the cognitive dimension held constant and disclose a greater amount of personal information with the level of the structural dimension held constant. From a practical perspective, the results may provide useful insight for companies operating SNSs.Originality/value– This study analyzed the influence of social capital factors on SNS users’ self-disclosure, as well as the interactions between personality and social capital factors. Specifically, the authors examined six important variables of social capital divided into three dimensions. This research complements current research on SNSs by focusing on SNS users’ motivation to disclose self-related information in addition to information sharing.

Abstract:Social media users’self-disclosure is studied in this article. Scale is developed based on Social Information Model (SIM),Reducing Clue Theory (RCT) and Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects (SIDE),to explore the status of users’self-disclosure in social media. Self-disclosure can be divided into 6 dimensions built on factor analysis,they are information on social property,daily interest,study and work, attitude, personality and personal privacy. Demographics of social media users is used as independent variable to explore its impact on self-disclosure. We found that women are more inclined to disclose themselves online, while the level of education also has a significant effect on the degree of self-disclosure.

Abstract:Purpose Researchers continue to address the concept of self-disclosure because it is foundational for helping social networking sites (SNS) function and thrive. Nevertheless, the authors' literature review indicates that uncertainty remains around the underlying mechanisms and factors involved in the self-disclosure process. The purpose of this research is to better understand the self-disclosure process from the lens of dual-process theory (DPT). The authors consider both the controlled factors (i.e. self-presentation and reciprocity) and an automatic factor (i.e. social influence to use an SNS) involved in self-disclosure and broaden The authors proposed a model to include the interactive facets of enjoyment. Design/methodology/approach The proposed model was empirically validated by conducting a survey among users of WeChat Moments in China. Findings As hypothesized, this research confirms that enjoyment and automatic processing (i.e. social influence to use an SNS) are complementary in the SNS self-disclosure process and enjoyment negatively moderates the positive relationship between controlled factor (i.e. self-presentation) and self-disclosure. Originality/value Theoretically, this study offers a new perspective on explaining SNS self-disclosure by adopting DPT. Specifically, this study contributes to the extant SNS research by applying DPT to examine how the controlled factors and the automatic factor shape self-disclosure processes and how enjoyment influences vary across these processes – enriching knowledge about SNS self-disclosure behaviors. Practically, the authors provide important design guidelines to practitioners concerning devising mechanisms to foster more automatic-enjoyable value-added functions to improve SNS users' participation and engagement.

Abstract:Social networking sites are built and designed to provide online services and a platform for people to social interacts and exchange information. This study used the social capital theory as a foundation to explore the social interaction factors and individual factors such as shared value, community identification, and information privacy concerns, and examine the mediating role of the desire to give information between trust on websites/members and information sharing behaviour in the proposed model. This research sample consists of seven hundred and twenty-seven members who have used the Facebook fan page for at least 6 months. This study adopted structural equation modeling to test the research hypotheses. The results of this study show that shared value, community identification, and information privacy concern directly influence trust on websites and members. Trust on websites and members directly influenced the desire to get/give information. Desire to give information directly influences information sharing behaviour. The desire to give information plays important mediating roles between trust on websites/members and information sharing behaviour. Finally, we provide conclusions and managerial implications of the findings.

Abstract:This study intends to understand why the social network sites users continue to use the service and why would they turn to other social network services. By integrating the honesty of self-disclosure with confirmation and three dimensions of social capital with perceived usefulness, we establish a new expectation confirmation model to understand the continuance intention of social network sites users. We propose eleven hypotheses and test them through a survey conduct in China and received 159 valid questionnaires. Through the analysis of 139 valid questionnaires which have at least one social network sites account, we draw some interesting conclusions. Honesty confirmation of self-disclosure has a positive relationship with the three dimension of perceived social capital but not the users’ satisfaction. Perceived social network is a significant antecedent of users’ satisfaction and continuance intention on account of the high switching cost. Meanwhile, perceived shared language can increase users’ satisfaction but not the continuance intention because its universality, and perceived trust has no relationship with both. This research provides a new perspective of expectation confirmation model to understand the social network sites continuance. It also gives some advises about how could social network provider increase their users’ continuance intention.

Abstract:The prevalence of social media use has significantly expanded the landscape of marketing communication and brand community management. Currently, various international brand players are beginning to develop ways of communicating with their customers on social media. This study focuses on the marketing applications of social media by examining the key motivations influencing the disclosure of personal information and participation in commercial activities of Facebook users in Hong Kong. The 566 responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis and structural equation modeling. The results support most of our hypotheses, suggesting that perceived convenience of maintaining relationships, enjoyment of activities, self-presentation, social presence, and perceived risks of privacy invasion have significant impacts on users' self-disclosure on Facebook and participation in commercial activities. The findings contribute to the literature on internet consumer behavior and have implications for the use of social media tools in marketing.
Self-disclosure on social networks: More than a rational decision-making process

Abstract:Although consequences of sharing personal information can be negative and severe (e.g., identity theft), individuals still engage in extensive self-disclosures on social networks. One commonly applied explanatory approach is the privacy calculus. Following this, self-disclosures can be conceptualized as rational choices resulting from a weighing of risks and benefits. However, this view misses the additional impulsive nature of decisions. The current study therefore takes the lens of dual-process theories and highlights that self-disclosure decisions can also be guided by an impulsive system. To test for the impact of descriptive social norms, a warning message, privacy-related decision-making styles, and perceived benefits and risks on individuals’ self-disclosure decisions, the fictitious social network “AHOY!” was created. It enabled the measurement of participants’ (N = 551; Mage = 40.77, SDage = 13.93) actual self-disclosures on two decision stages: 1) whether or not a post was created, 2) how much information (on a psychological and informational dimension) was provided. Further, descriptive social norms (i.e., the extent of other users’ self-disclosures) and the presence/absence of a warning message were varied. The remaining factors were measured using questionnaires. The results imply that cognitive and affective processes (expected to be triggered by the investigated factors) are involved differently in the two decision stages. While both the reflective and impulsive system may be involved in the first stage, with the reflective system also potentially taking a predominant role, the impulsive system may be predominant when deciding how much to disclose. This highlights the importance of exceeding common assumptions of rationality to better understand and support individuals’ self-disclosure decisions.

Abstract:Social media sites allow users to instantaneously self-disclose to their entire social network. This creates an opportunity to engage in self-expression that is farther-reaching than ever before, but also a new challenge: managing the risk inherent in self-disclosing to a large and diverse set of people. What guides decisions about how openly to self-disclose in such contexts? Building on theoretical and empirical evidence linking perceived partner responsiveness to open self-disclosure in face-to-face dyadic interactions, we hypothesized that perceptions of a Facebook network's responsiveness would shape people's self-disclosure on Facebook. We also examined whether observers can infer people's perceived network responsiveness from thin-slices of self-disclosure. Across two studies, people who perceived their Facebook network as more (vs. less) responsive self-disclosed more openly on Facebook. Furthermore, observers could infer participants' perceived network responsiveness with some accuracy on the basis of disclosure openness. Implications for the self-disclosure and person perception literatures are discussed.

Abstract:In light of the omnipresence of personal information exchange in the virtual world, this study examines the effects of Facebook use on privacy perceptions and self-disclosure behaviors across a 5-year period from 2010 to 2015. Findings at the global level support the socializing role of Facebook in cultivating more relaxed privacy attitudes, subsequently increasing self-disclosure in both offline and online contexts. However, longitudinal trends indicate that while risk perceptions increased for heavy users, they remained stable for light users. Furthermore, the negative relationship between privacy concerns and self-disclosure weakened across time. Implications for the application of cultivation theory to a contemporary social media context and the year-to-year changes in the impact of Facebook use on privacy attitudes and self-disclosure are discussed.

Abstract:What do college students reveal to their peers on social media under complete anonymity? Do their campus environments relate to the topics of their disclosure? To answer these questions, I analyze Facebook confessions pages. Popular on hundreds of college campuses, these pages allow students to anonymously post personal confessions on a public community forum. In this preliminary research note, I analyze several explanatory factors of online student confessional behavior. Aggregating nearly 200,000 confessions posts spanning a period of 3 years, I combine Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) with human verification through Mechanical Turk to scalably identify topics in these online confessions. Where possible, I also link posts to real-world news events parsed from Twitter. I find that confessions mentioning socioeconomics as well as mental and physical health occur more often at top-ranking, expensive private colleges. While event-related confessions most often mention timely school-related events, many mention global and domestic events outside of the local campus sphere. Results suggest that undergraduates from different campuses disclose about topics such as race, socioeonomics, and politics differently, but in aggregate, post in similar patterns over time. Additionally, results confirm that anonymous Facebook confessors receive support for confessions on important, but taboo topics such as health and socioeconomic status.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of user motivations and behaviors on perceptions of mutually beneficial social resources accessible via connections formed and maintained on Facebook. Survey data collected from undergraduate Facebook users were used to construct a multiple-group structural equation model of male (n = 109) and female (n = 187) users to assess the effects of motivations, usage intensity, and general public self-disclosure on users' perceptions of bridging and bonding social capital. Results indicate that status and relationship formation motivations directly affect both dimensions of social capital for all users. Formation motivation was found to positively affect public self-disclosure for male users, and usage intensity was found to mediate the positive effect of user motivations on public self-disclosure for both groups. General self-disclosure on public Facebook profiles was found to positively affect perceived bridging capital and mediated the effect of formation motivation on bridging capital only for male users, while public self-disclosure was not found to significantly predict either dimension of social capital among female users. Findings are discussed within the theoretical framework of social capital and the hyperpersonal model of computer-mediated communication, and directions for future research are proposed.

Abstract:The self-disclosure of personal information by users on social network sites (SNSs) play a vital role in the self-sustainability of online social networking service provider platforms. However, people’s levels of privacy concern increases as a direct result of unauthorized procurement and exploitation of personal information from the use of social networks which in turn discourages users from disclosing their information or encourages users to submit fake information online. After a review of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the privacy calculus model, an integrated model is proposed to explain privacy disclosure behaviors on social network sites. Thus, the aim of this paper is to find the key factors affecting users’ self-disclosure of personal information. Using privacy calculus, the perceived benefit was combined into the Theory of Planned Behavior, and after some modifications, an integrated model was prescribed specifically for the context of social network sites. The constructs of information sensitivity and perceived benefit were redefined after reviewing the literature. Through a study on the constructs of privacy concern and self-disclosure, this article aims at reducing the levels of privacy concern, while sustaining online transactions and further stimulating the development of social network sites.

Abstract:College students are exposed to a vast amount of information on political and social issues through social media. We studied how college students engage with political and social issues on Facebook in a weeklong study with 50 participants using diary entries and interviews. The interviews revealed a duality of benefits for using Facebook for news and they also revealed challenges of self-presentation around news. Benefits included gaining multiple perspectives and enabling social sense making, providing personal relevance and convenience of access, and the opportunity for social engagement. Impression management and disclosure concerns strongly influence some people to refrain from commenting or sharing news. We discuss the challenges that context collapse poses for Facebook news readers. We suggest design ideas and future directions to encourage more balanced participation with news among college students.

Abstract:The popularity of social network sites has influenced communication behaviour in a variety of contexts. Thus, this study examined the online behaviour of social media users as regards self-disclosure, motivations and gratifications. The study adopted Social Penetration Theory by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor and data were gathered through questionnaire from randomly selected 330 respondents and from purposively selected 16 respondents in two sessions of Focus GroupDiscussion (FGD) among the students of University of Ibadan and the Polytechnic Ibadan. Although some respondents agreed that relationship management (56.1%) and need for self-expression (60.3%) motivated them to self-disclose on Facebook and Instagram, most disagreed that reciprocity (65.0%), mutual self-disclosure (78.2%), social validation (66.3%) and show off (78.6%) motivated them. Also, most respondents agreed that they sought gratifications from intimate relationship (56.1%), killing boredom (55.4%), seeking people’s opinions (67.3%) and maintaining online conversation (58.0%). However, qualitative data revealed that most respondents were motivated by and also sought gratifications from many of the factors aforementioned for online self-disclosure. Therefore, this study recommended that social media users should be orientated on the proper use of social media as it is obvious that many of them lack the requisite online literacy knowledge; with this, social media users will make use of the platform without risking their privacy. Abstract:Self-disclosure on social networking sites (SNSs) leads to social capital development, connectedness, and relationship building. Due to several benefits associated with this behavior, self-disclosure has become a subject of research over the last few years. The current study investigates the antecedents of self-disclosure under the lens of the technology acceptance model (TAM). The research is quantitative, and the data were collected from 400 Pakistani Facebook users with a variety of demographic characteristics. The partial least squares-structural equation model (PLS-SEM) analysis technique was employed to analyze the data. The study′s findings confirmed that perceived usefulness is a strong predictor of personal information sharing, and it along with other variables causes a 31% variation in self-disclosure behavior. However, trust (medium and social) mediates the relationshipof perceived usefulness, privacy concerns, and self-disclosure behavior.

Abstract:With the development of new technologies and rise of social media, the desire to communicate and share information is seen as a primary driver of social networking sites, where the aspect of self-disclosure becomes one of the key characteristics for interpersonal attraction. The aim of the research is to examine how people communicate, self-disclose and maintain relationships on social networking sites and to find out how the use of computer-mediated communication relates to relational development and maintenance. MTurk tool and social media posts were utilized to gather information. Statistical data analysis program SPSS was employed: confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and scale analysis and construction were performed. The investigation revealed significant differences between males and females self-disclosure practices on social networking site Facebook with outstanding differences depending upon the country of living, relationship status, perceived positive and negative rewards, benefits and satisfaction. The results of the study open path for future research within the framework of communication privacy management theory in line with the social penetration theory with an aim to analyse how self-disclosure inter-correlates with privacy concerns.
