Abstract:The self-disclosure of personal information by users on social network sites (SNSs) play a vital role in the self-sustainability of online social networking service provider platforms. However, people’s levels of privacy concern increases as a direct result of unauthorized procurement and exploitation of personal information from the use of social networks which in turn discourages users from disclosing their information or encourages users to submit fake information online. After a review of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the privacy calculus model, an integrated model is proposed to explain privacy disclosure behaviors on social network sites. Thus, the aim of this paper is to find the key factors affecting users’ self-disclosure of personal information. Using privacy calculus, the perceived benefit was combined into the Theory of Planned Behavior, and after some modifications, an integrated model was prescribed specifically for the context of social network sites. The constructs of information sensitivity and perceived benefit were redefined after reviewing the literature. Through a study on the constructs of privacy concern and self-disclosure, this article aims at reducing the levels of privacy concern, while sustaining online transactions and further stimulating the development of social network sites.

Abstract:Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to determine the influence and interaction of social networks and personality traits on the self-disclosure behavior of social network site (SNS) users. According to social capital theory and the Big Five personality model, the authors hypothesized that social capital factors would affect the accuracy and amount of self-disclosure behavior and that personality traits would moderate this effect.Design/methodology/approach– A survey was conducted to collect data from 207 SNS users. The questionnaire was administered in university classrooms and libraries and via e-mail. The measurement model and structural model were examined by using LISREL 8.8 and SmartPLS 2.0.Findings– Based on the path analysis, the authors identified several interesting patterns to explain self-disclosure behavior on SNSs. First, the centrality of SNS users has a positive effect on their amount of self-disclosure. Moreover, people who are more extroverted disclose personal information that is more accurate with the level of the cognitive dimension held constant and disclose a greater amount of personal information with the level of the structural dimension held constant. From a practical perspective, the results may provide useful insight for companies operating SNSs.Originality/value– This study analyzed the influence of social capital factors on SNS users’ self-disclosure, as well as the interactions between personality and social capital factors. Specifically, the authors examined six important variables of social capital divided into three dimensions. This research complements current research on SNSs by focusing on SNS users’ motivation to disclose self-related information in addition to information sharing.

Abstract:Private information disclosure on social networking sites (SNS) is one of the most important and active issues in the information management arena. The growing phenomenon of platforms requiring users to disclose personal information exposes the limitations of previous studies that only focus on users' voluntary disclosure. In this study, we define two modes of users' private information disclosure behavior: voluntary sharing and mandatory provision. Using the Communication Privacy Management theory, we built a framework to explain the impact of individual characteristics, context, motivation, and benefit–risk ratio on the user's willingness to disclose voluntarily or mandatorily. Our research shows that voluntary sharing is more likely to be driven by positive factors, such as perceived benefits, social network size, and personalization, while mandatory provision is affected by individual characteristics such as age, privacy policy, and perceived risks. One of our interesting findings is that perceived risk has less impact on voluntary sharing than previous studies suggested. When encouraging users to share information voluntarily, platforms do not need to pay as much attention to reducing perceived risk as in the mandatory providing mode, but should focus on improving perceived benefits. Being the first to classify and compare the private information disclosure modes of SNS users, our research enriches the existing literature and opens up new avenues for researchers and social networking platforms.

Abstract:Renren is the most popular social networking site in China which is a real and public platform rather than anonymity BBS and blog. Some recent research has even demonstrated that self-reported personality traits are reflected in personal webpages. In an exploratory study, We analyzed the content of status in Renren which is an update feature on users' main profile page that describe what user is doing now, and investigated the relation between self-reported personality traits and self-disclosure in Renren. A survey among 204 users of the Renren showed that the extent of self-disclosure is significantly related to extraversion, unwillingness to communicate, social self-esteem and social support perceived from real life.

Abstract:Social media users’self-disclosure is studied in this article. Scale is developed based on Social Information Model (SIM),Reducing Clue Theory (RCT) and Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects (SIDE),to explore the status of users’self-disclosure in social media. Self-disclosure can be divided into 6 dimensions built on factor analysis,they are information on social property,daily interest,study and work, attitude, personality and personal privacy. Demographics of social media users is used as independent variable to explore its impact on self-disclosure. We found that women are more inclined to disclose themselves online, while the level of education also has a significant effect on the degree of self-disclosure.

Abstract:The scarcity of medical resources is a fundamental problem worldwide; the development of information technology and the Internet has given birth to online health care, which has alleviated the above problem. The survival and sustainable development of the online health community requires users to continuously disclose their health and privacy. Therefore, it is a great practical significance to find out the factors and mechanisms that promote users' self-disclosure in the online health community. From the perspective of individual and situation interaction, this study constructed influencing factors model of health privacy information self-disclosure. Finally, we collected 264 valid samples from the online health community through online and offline questionnaire surveys and then use the SPSS20.0 and AMOS21.0 to conduct exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, scale reliability and validity analysis, and structural equation model analysis. The main findings are as follows: trust in websites and trust in doctors reduce the privacy concern. The privacy trade-off will not occur when trust is enough to offset the privacy concerns caused by personalized services, reciprocity norms, and other factors. Second, reciprocity norms are inevitably compulsive, which will increase privacy concerns. However, based on voluntariness, reciprocity norms can enhance user trust. Third, service quality caused by personalized services not only enhance the social rewards of users but also eliminate the privacy concern. Fourth, users' health privacy attention and information sensitivity are too high to decrease the influence of user' privacy concerns on personal health privacy information disclosure. The conclusions of this paper will help us to supplement privacy calculus theory and the application scope of the attention-based view. The proposed strategy of this article can be used to stimulate the information contribution behavior of users and improve the medical service capabilities in online health community.

Abstract:This study explores factors that may explain information disclosure behavior on Facebook and provides understanding of each factor's contribution in explaining such behavior. Factors tested in this study are drawn from theories (e.g., social contract theory and uses and gratification theory) and constructs (e.g., trust/self-disclosure relationships, time spent on Facebook, number of Facebook friends, and gender difference). Findings suggest the potential of all the factors examined in this study as frameworks to explain self-disclosure behavior on Facebook. This social media-specific study offers evidence that these theories may have implications that are different from the current e-commerce literature on self-disclosure. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract A plethora of research has examined the effects of privacy concerns on individuals' self-disclosure on social network sites (SNSs). However, most studies are based on the rational choice paradigm, without taking into account the influence of individuals' emotional states. This study examines the roles of stress in influencing the relationship between privacy concerns and self-disclosure on SNSs, as well as gender differences in the effects of stress. Results from a survey of 556 university students in Hong Kong suggest that privacy concerns are negatively related to the amount, intimacy, and honesty of self-disclosure on SNSs. Yet a person's level of stress dampens the association between privacy concerns and disclosure amount and intimacy, suggesting that people may worry less about privacy when highly stressed. Moreover, the moderating effect of stress varies based on gender. This study provides insights into the emotional component of privacy management online.

Abstract:Sharing location in SNSs has witnessed rapid development in recent years. Privacy is undoubtedly a barrier to the adoption of such location sharing services. In this paper, we investigate what factors affect users' privacy concerns and how privacy concerns may in turn affect users' location sharing behaviors. We conducted one quantitative survey and 8 interviews on Chinese popular SNSs. We identified 1) the factors that users care more about their privacy when posting location information on social networks, 2) what types of privacy information do they think might be exposed through location sharing, and 3) users' behavior patterns in cope with privacy concerns. We also discuss the theoretical and practical implication on the improvement of location sharing services.

Abstract:The prevalence of social networking sites (SNS) raises questions about what information is private and what is not. Some users willingly share information on the site expecting some benefits, but others may be reluctant to do so due to fear of losing control of the shared information. To better understand the delicate relationship between privacy, perceived benefits, and self-disclosure, this study examines the antecedents of self-disclosure behavior on professional SNS (i.e., LinkedIn). A model contextualizing privacy calculus theory combined with the trust factor was developed and evaluated using 661 quantitative data collected through a questionnaire. Then, the data was analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling method. The results show that perceived benefit (e.g., self-presentation, career advancement, professional network development, learning, and information exchange), privacy concerns, and perceived control are the factors that directly influence LinkedIn users to disclose personal information. These factors become significant predictors of self-disclosure behavior. Meanwhile, trust in LinkedIn members, perceived severity, and perceived likelihood indirectly influence self-disclosure through privacy concerns. Finally, perceived control directly influences trust in LinkedIn members and trust in the LinkedIn provider. The findings of this study help to understand SNS users' behavior, particularly self-disclosure behavior. SNS users can become more aware of the benefits and risks of their disclosure behavior, allowing them to make more informed decisions. These findings can also be helpful for SNS providers to improve product experience and strategy by effectively encouraging and facilitating self-disclosure practices.

Abstract:This research aims to investigate the impact of users' privacy awareness on their self-disclosing behavior. Our primary research question is to investigate how young social media users feel about the benefits and risks of disclosing them-selves on social media and how risk-benefit awareness influences the assess-ment of their self-disclosure. Based on the data we recorded, the factor analysis, and three-way ANOVA, we conclude that users who know more about privacy benefits share more on social media (F= 36.291; df 1; sig < .001) while those who know less about the benefits disclose less on social media. According to the analysis, users who know more about self-disclosure risks share less on so-cial media (F= 7.001; df 1; sig < .001). Users disclose less information on so-cial media platforms based on the different levels of their risk perceptions (df 3, F=.715, sig < 0.5). This indicates that risks on social media platforms vary to some degree. We saw that people's sharing habits based on their levels of risk, benefits, and social media platforms can vary. One thing that remained certain was users' main benefit for engaging and disclosing on social media is their need to stay in touch with friends and their need for community. On the flip side, the main risk was the need not to be impersonated and misunderstood by people. Based on a simple frequency analysis of the open-ended questions we asked In our data collection, the most highlighted words in our responses were "people" and "friends". These were the two main words that stood out in all the data we collected concerning the benefits, risks, and intention to self-disclose.

Abstract:This study investigates a cross-cultural comparison between Germany and Norway regarding users' self-disclosure of personal information on social network sites (SNSs). More specifically, the study considers three antecedents of privacy, namely concerns, attitudes, and intentions, and evaluates their potential effects on self-disclosure, considering Facebook as the SNS of choice. The study employs a deductive research approach and develops a conceptual model based on the theoretical analysis. Data is collected via an online survey of users in Germany and Norway. The results show that privacy intention is the only antecedent that has a significant direct influence on users' self-disclosure of information. By contrast, neither privacy concerns nor privacy attitude have a statistically significant influence on self-disclosure. Additionally, there are statistically significant differences between the German and Norwegian samples in privacy concepts and reported self-disclosure. The results support the creation of more transparent privacy policies by SNS providers to improve targeted marketing.

Abstract:Background: Excessive self-disclosure online may risk the reputations, mental health problems, and professional lives of nursing students. This study investigated nursing students' usage of social media, their attitudes towards social media, mental health problems and self-disclosures, and the relationships of these variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted online (n = 1054) with questionnaires of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), Social Media Fatigue (SMF), Students' Uses and Views of Social Media (SUVSM) and self-disclosure in social media which included self-information shown on social media and information viewed by others. Results: Although most of them held positive attitudes towards social media, 17.4% of the participants acknowledged that they had posted inappropriate contents online and 37.6% witnessed improper posts from schoolmates or teachers online. SMF was affected by familiar with relevant regulations on the social media usage (β = -.10, p < .001), FoMO (β = .41, p < .001), and SUVSM (β = .17, p < .001). Additionally, nearly 1/3 participants reported their net-friends could view following information: gender, age, occupation, education level and location. Self- disclosure in social media was positively influenced by education (β = .10, p < .001), sharing moments or Weibo, etc. (β = .009, P = 0.009), time spent on social media daily (β = .11, p < .001), accepting stranger's "friend request" (β = .06, P = 0.047), FoMO (β = .14, p < .001) and SMF (β = .19, p < .001). Furthermore, effect of SUVSM on self-disclosure in social media was mediated by FoMO and SMF. Conclusion: Inappropriate contents are posted and witnessed by appreciable proportions of nursing students. Positive attitude towards social media may strengthen FoMO and SMF, which may increase self-disclosure in social media in turn.

Abstract:Understanding how much users disclose personal information in Online Social Networks (OSN) has served various scenarios such as maintaining social relationships and customer segmentation. Prior studies on self-disclosure have relied on surveys or users' direct social networks. These approaches, however, cannot represent the whole population nor consider user dynamics at the community level. In this paper, we conduct a quantitative study at different granularities of networks (ego networks and user communities) to understand users' self-disclosing behaviors better. As our first contribution, we characterize users into three types (open, closed, and moderate) based on the Communication Privacy Management theory and extend the analysis of the self-disclosure of users to a large-scale OSN dataset which could represent the entire network structure. As our second contribution, we show that our proposed features of ego networks and positional and structural properties of communities significantly affect self-disclosing behavior. Based on these insights, we present the possible relation between the propensity of the self-disclosure of users and the sociological theory of structural holes, i.e., users at a bridge position can leverage advantages among distinct groups. To the best of our knowledge, our study provides the first attempt to shed light on the self-disclosure of users using the whole network structure, which paves the way to a better understanding of users' self-disclosing behaviors and their relations with overall network structures.

Abstract:The wide adoption of mobile devices and social media platforms have dramatically increased the collection and sharing of personal information. More and more frequently, users are called to make decisions concerning the disclosure of their personal information. In this study, we investigate the factors affecting users’ choices toward the disclosure of their personal data, including not only their demographic and self-reported individual characteristics, but also their social interactions and their mobility patterns inferred from months of mobile phone data activity. We report the findings of a field study conducted with a community of 63 subjects provided with (i) a smart-phone and (ii) a Personal Data Store (PDS) enabling them to control the disclosure of their data. We monitor the sharing behavior of our participants through the PDS and evaluate the contribution of different factors affecting their disclosing choices of location and social interaction data. Our analysis shows that social interaction inferred by mobile phones is an important factor revealing willingness to share, regardless of the data type. In addition, we provide further insights on the individual traits relevant to the prediction of sharing behavior.

Abstract:With the wide use of social media and other online services, people are getting more concerned about online privacy. Social media platforms and other online companies are collecting users' information for various purposes, including targeted advertising. While these data are anonymous, it is possible to identify people through publicly available information and machine learning algorithms. Members of some groups are more vulnerable to such privacy attacks and more likely to be identified. This raises a concern regarding the fair or equitable protection of online privacy, or the protection of all online users' instead of most users' private information. This research addresses this relatively new topic from the sociological perspective and focuses on fair privacy protection in online datasets. Questionnaire data show that college students rate the current privacy protection in online datasets low, but they have great support for general privacy protection and greater support for fair privacy protection. Factors that affect their support for general and fair privacy protection include prior cautious online behavior and how essential they rate company practice and government policies that ensure fair privacy. When they perceive a lack of fair privacy in online datasets, most of them would reduce or stop using certain online services. Factors affecting such reactions include prior cautious online behavior, hours on social media, the perception of being included in online datasets, and perceived importance of fair privacy policies. The findings highlight the pivotal role of institutional privacy measures, namely fair privacy company practice and government policies, especially the latter.

Abstract:Online platforms have exhibited several perceived and actual challenges to privacy. Using a complex research model, this study examines direct, mediating, and moderating effects on several privacy variables. It involved 335 respondents using systematic random sampling from online consumers and hypotheses testing using structural equation modeling. The antecedents of consumers’ intention to disclose personal information were confirmed for privacy vulnerability and privacy benefit. On the other hand, the antecedent of consumers’ privacy protection behavior in relation to privacy vulnerability was found to be statistically insignificant but confirming privacy benefits. As predicted, the mediating roles of privacy information transparency were proven empirically, and so were the moderating roles of privacy cynicism. This research addresses research gaps suggested by previous esteemed scholars and suggests several guidelines for practitioners. Finally, it outlined core research themes for future researchers.
