Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is a biobased polyester characterized by high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but poor toughness. Toughening PEF without sacrificing its modulus, strength and gas barrier performance is a great challenge for PEF modification. In this study, high molecular weight random poly(ethylene- co-1,5-pentylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate)s (PEPeFs) were synthesized via melt copolycondensation of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,5-pentanediol (PeDO), a cheap, biobased and commercially available odd-carbon comonomer. The synthesized PEPeFs were characterized and assessed with intrinsic viscosity, ATR-FTIR, 1H NMR, DSC, TGA and tensile, impact and O2 permeation test. Mayo-Lewis equation with "reactivity ratio" of 3.78 for PeDO and 0.75 for EG could be used as an empirical equation to correlate the copolyester composition (ϕPeF) with monomer composition. PEPeFs proved nearly amorphous copolyesters having excellent thermal stability. Brittle-ductile transition was achieved at ϕPeF as low as 9 mol %. Increasing ϕPeF led to increase in elongation at break and notch impact strength and decrease in Tg, O2 barrier performance and tensile modulus and strength. However, in comparison with PEF, PEF-rich PEPeFs (ϕPeF 9-47%) not only showed greatly improved elongation at break (29-265% vs 4%) and enhanced impact strength (2.2-3.9 kJ/m2) but also retained very high Young's modulus (2.8-3.3 vs 3.3 GPa) and yielding strength (72-83 vs 82 MPa). Particularly, when compared with bottle-grade PET, PE82Pe18F possesses equal Tg (ca. 75 °C) and comparable elongation at break (ca. 115%), but greatly improved yielding strength (83 MPa) and O2 gas barrier property (4.8 times). As modified PEF materials possessing superior thermo-mechanical and O2 gas barrier properties, these integrally biobased copolyesters may find practical applications in eco-packaging and other fields.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is a biobased polyester with superior thermo-mechanical and gas barrier properties than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), the most widely used petroleum-based polyester. However, PEF is more brittle than PET. To toughen PEF, a series of P(EF-mb-PTMG) (PETF) multiblock copolymers with high intrinsic viscosity were successfully synthesized via melt polycondensation in the presence of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) oligomer diols, and characterized with FTIR, H-1 NMR, DSC, WAXD, TGA and SEM, and assessed with tensile and impact testing. The presence of PTMG contributes to promote intrinsic viscosity growth and depress etherification and discoloration side reactions. The PTMG flexible segments show chain length dependent partial miscibility with PEF hard segments, and its presence also plasticizes and promotes cold crystallization of PEF segments. With tuning the PTMG content, high performance PEF-based materials can be tailor-made from high tough thermoplastics with excellent ductility and impact toughness to thermoplastic elastomers with high strength. Particularly, (PETF)-F-1K-20 shows excellent ductility (elongation at break 252%) while retaining high modulus (3.0 GPa) and yielding strength (74 MPa), and (PETF)-F-1K-35 is the first PEF-based material with impact strength over 50 kJ/m(2) to date.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR , H-1 NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.
Biobased Poly(ethylene-co-hexamethylene 2,5-Furandicarboxylate) (PEHF) Copolyesters with Superior Tensile Properties

Abstract:Poly(ethylene-co-hexamethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEHF) copolyesters with high intrinsic viscosity were synthesized from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), ethylene glycol (EG), and 1.6-hexanediol (HDO) through two-step melting polycondensation, characterized with (HNMR)-H-1, DSC, WARD, and TGA, and assessed by tensile and impact tests. The molar fraction of HF unit in PEHF (phi(HF)), namely, copolymer composition, is higher than the molar fraction of HDO in the feeding diols and can be predicted empirically via Mayer-Lewis equation with apparent reactivity ratio r(HDO) = 4.6 and r(EG) = 0.74. All the PEHFs exhibited a single glass transition temperature and excellent thermal stability. HF-rich (phi(HF) >= 88 mol %) PEHFs are semicrystalline but the others are almost amorphous. In comparison with PEF, PEHFs with phi(HF) of 28-36 mol % possess significantly improved tensile ductility (elongation at break 54-160%) and retain high tensile modulus (2.6-2.2 GPa) and yielding strength (71-65 MPa). The tensile properties are comparable to those of bottle-grade PET.

Abstract:In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was introduced into PLA/BP/UFBC ternary biocomposites as a plasticizer to improve the toughness of the biocomposites. Mechanical and thermal properties of the modified biocomposites were characterized. The interface bonding characteristics between the matrix and additives were analyzed. The flexural strain of the biocomposites increased with the increase of PEG addition. The flexural strain of 6.79% was observed when the PEG addition was 10 wt%. The tensile modulus increased by 390.81 MPa with the addition of 6 wt% PEG. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed the presence of strong polar and hydrogen bonding interactions between the PLA and PEG. DSC analyses showed that melt-crystallization behavior occurred during the cooling process with the addition of 6 and 10 wt% PEG. Glass transition and cold crystallization of PEG- plasticized biocomposites were not observed. The decrease in melting temperature indicated that the crystallization rate was improved because of the PEG plasticization effect on PLA biocomposites. It proved that PEG can improved the homogeneous dispersion of BP and UFBC within PLA matrix along with their strong interfacial interaction. This work offers an innovative methodology for adjusting interfacial adhesion, and expanding the extensive applications of PLA.
Preparation of PBT/POE‐g‐GMA/PP Ternary Blends with Good Rigidity–toughness Balance by Core–shell Particles

Abstract:ABSTRACTCompared with poly(butylene terephthalate)/glycidyl methacrylate grafted poly(ethylene–octene) (PBT/POE‐g‐GMA) binary blends, supertough PBT‐based ternary blends with little rigidity loss were successfully obtained by adding rigid polypropylene (PP) into PBT/POE‐g‐GMA blends to construct core–shell particles during melt blending. The effects of PP content and type on the phase morphology and mechanical properties of the blends were systematically investigated. Theoretical predictions and scanning electron microscopy observation showed that a core–shell structure was formed in PBT matrix with PP as the core and POE‐g‐GMA as the shell. The mechanical property tests showed that POE‐g‐GMA and PP had significant synergistic toughening effect. When PP with high melt flow index (H‐PP) was used, PBT/POE‐g‐GMA/H‐PP (70/15/15) blends possessed the highest Izod notched impact strength, which was 1.9‐fold compared with PBT/POE‐g‐GMA (70/30) binary blends, while the tensile performance loss was little. The essential work of fracture tests was performed to evaluate the fracture resistance of different samples. The results demonstrated that PBT/POE‐g‐GMA/PP ternary blends possessed much better resistance to crack propagation than PBT/POE‐g‐GMA binary blends. The decrease of interparticle distance and the fibrillation of core–shell particles activated intense matrix shear yielding, which was the reason for the high crack resistance of ternary blends. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Developing biobased materials is a considerably effective approach to save fossil resources and reduce emissions. Biobased polyamide 56 (PA56) is an excellent engineering material, but it has low toughness. Herein, to enhance the toughness of PA56, an ultra-tough biodegradable material, i.e., poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) was introduced into PA56. Moreover, a self-synthesized epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester (EHBP) was used to improve the compatibility of the blended materials. The results of differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the epoxide group of EHBP could react with PA56 and PBAT to form a block -like polymer structure and limit the crystallization behavior of the blends. The scanning electron microscopy results show that the addition of EHBP considerably reduced the dispersed-phase size in the blends, forming a nanoscale island structure. Moreover, the hydrogen bonds formed between EHBP and PA56/PBAT enhanced the intermolecular interaction between the two materials. Thus, PA56 blends with ultrahigh toughness were successfully prepared. The prepared PA56/PBAT/EHBP blend exhibited a notch impact strength of 20.71 kJ/m 2 and a breaking elongation of 38.3 %, which represent increases of 427.3 % and 252.8 %, respectively, compared with those of pure PA56. Thus, the proposed method is suitable for toughening PA56 and broadening its applications.

Abstract:Supertough poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) blends were prepared by melting with poly(ethyleneoctene) (POE) and glycidyl methacrylate grafted POE (POE-g-GMA), and the toughening mechanism was systematically analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and rheological measurements identified that POE-g-GMA effectively improved the interaction between PBT and elastomer. The compatibility between phases improved gradually, while the notched impact strength increased at first and then decreased with the increase of POE-g-GMA content. The blends containing 10 wt % POE-g-GMA showed the highest impact strength, which was 18.0-fold compared to that of neat PBT. The study of the toughening mechanism indicated that a suitable compatibility was significant for obtaining supertough PBT blends because the good elastomers dispersion and suitable interfacial adhesion can be obtained simultaneously. The weak interface and the large particle size led to unstable crack propagation, while too strong interfacial adhesion prevented interface debonding and arrested matrix shear yielding. Microvoiding generated by both the debonding and internal cavitation of elastomers followed by matrix shear yielding was the main toughening mechanism in toughened PBT blends.

Abstract:The block copolymers PEF/PBAT were synthesized by copolymerizing ethylene 2,5‐furandicarboxylate (EF) with totally biodegradable poly (butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT). The copolymers' molecular chain structure, thermal properties, thermal stability, and mechanical properties were investigated, and the toughening mechanism was preliminarily studied via the micromorphology. The results revealed that the prepared block copolymers were amorphous, the thermal stability of PEF was improved, while the glass transition temperature decreased with the increase of PBAT content. PBAT was enhancing the tensile strength and elongation at break of PEF simultaneously. When the PBAT content was 25% (PEF/PBAT‐25), the brittle‐ductile transition occurred, with the tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break of 72 MPa, 3210 MPa and 287%, respectively. The copolymers have broad application in the field of packaging materials.

Abstract:Blends of poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and epoxided ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EEPDM) were prepared. Their mechanical properties and morphology were studied by Izod impact test machine and scanning electronic microscope respectively, It was found that the notched Izod impact strength of blend PBT/EEPDM was as about 23 times as that of pure PET and about 10 times as that of blend PBT/EPDM at room temperature, The dispersed rubber particles were much smaller and the phase boundary was more blurred in blend PBT/EEPDM than in blend PBT/EPDM. The toughness of blend PBT/EEPDM was much more better than that of blend PET and PBT/EPDM, which was in good agreement with the difference between their morphologies.

Abstract:The application of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) is limited by its inherent brittleness and easy to hydrolysis. Herein, we demonstrate an effective strategy to make fibrous PGA/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends with high strength, toughness and better hydrolysis resistance by reactive compatibilization and subsequent solid-state drawing. The enhanced chain entanglement due to the compatibilization restricts the chain relaxation during drawing process, leading to a predominance of stress-induced orientation. Meanwhile, it also facilitates the immobilization and transformation of extended chains into rigid amorphous fraction (RAF). As a consequence, the combination of strong interfacial bonding, high orientation and abundant RAF results in superior comprehensive properties of the fibrous PGA/PBAT blends, e.g., the drawn compatibilized PGA/PBAT exhibit a tensile strength as high as 700 MPa and a tensile toughness of 385 MJ/m 3 . Moreover, the tensile strength retention of the drawn compatibilized PGA/PBAT is 20 % higher than uncompatibilized sample after hydrolysis for 5 days. Therefore, this work provides a feasible strategy to make robust and durable fibrous PGA-based blends, which may broaden the application range of PGA.

Abstract:Sustainable polymeric blends were successfully produced by blending biobased poly(propylene 2,5-furan dicarboxylate) (PPF) with poly(lactic acid) (PLA). This study aimed to enhance the toughness of PLA, which is known for its inherent brittleness, by incorporating compatible polymeric additives. In this regard, a biosynthesized PPF polymer was used to strengthen PLA, resulting in improved tensile properties and the potential for biodegradability, as both PLA and PPF are derived from natural sources. The study revealed that the highest tensile strength (89.46 ± 2.98 MPa) was achieved with a 30% PPF reinforcement of PLA, while the greatest elongation at break (63.85 ± 4.10%) was observed with a 20% PPF reinforcement, compared to neat PLA. Additionally, the 30% PPF reinforcement of PLA exhibited a significantly higher Young’s modulus of 3197.35 ± 107.25 MPa. All the blends displayed superior tensile strengths and elongation at break compared to neat PLA. Tensile strengths showed an increasing trend with a higher content of PPF copolymers. Morphological investigations indicated limited compatibility between PLA and PPF, but this characteristic did not negatively impact the thermo-mechanical performance of the developed blends. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the blends increased with a higher loading of PPF in the polymeric blend system. Overall, these sustainable composite products demonstrate promising potential for applications requiring enhanced mechanical and thermal properties. The results suggest that the developed blends are suitable for scalable production and real-life applications.

Abstract:The PET/PBE blends with a good balance between toughness and stiffness were prepared via a novel elongational rheology extruder. In the light of the thermodynamic factors, EGMA as an interfacial modifier was selectively localized at the interface. When the weight fraction of Ethylene/Methylacrylate/Glycidyl Methacrylate copolymer (EGMA) was 6 wt%, the impact strength of the PET/EGMA/PBE blend soared to 35.00 KJ/m 2 , which is nearly seven times higher than that of its un-compatibilizer counterpart. Furthermore, compared to the un-compatibilized counterpart, the tensile strength and tensile modulus of the PET/EGMA/PBE blend are only reduced by 10% and 13%, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties of the compatibilized blends can be attributed to the enhanced interfacial reactive compatibilization between PET and PBE, and the fine dispersion of dispersed phase. The in-suit reaction between carboxyl or hydroxy group of PET and epoxy group of EGMA was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In addition, both morphology and rheology characterization results suggested that the improved interfacial combination between PET and PBE was obtained with the inclusion of EGMA.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), encompassing both simple steatosis and non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH), is the most common cause of liver disease in Australia. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease needs to be considered in the context of the metabolic syndrome, as cardiovascular disease will account for much of the mortality associated with NAFLD. OBJECTIVE To provide an approach to the identification of NAFLD in general practice, the distinction between simple steatosis and NASH, and the management of these two conditions. DISCUSSION Non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis is more common in the presence of diabetes, obesity, older age and increased inflammation, and is more likely to progress to cirrhosis. Cirrhosis may be complicated by hepatocellular carcinoma or liver failure. Hepatocellular carcinoma has also been described in NASH without cirrhosis. Assessment and treatment of features of the metabolic syndrome may reduce associated cardiovascular mortality. Numerous agents have been evaluated, but weight loss remains the only effective treatment for NAFLD.
Tailoring compatibility and toughness of microbial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/bio-based polyester elastomer blends by epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester

Abstract:Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate- co -3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a type of promising bio-based thermoplastic for food packaging but find restricted industrial applications due to its brittleness and poor processability that is caused by its large spherulite sizes. In this study, for the purpose of toughening PHBV, bio-based engineering polyester elastomers (BEPE) were synthesized and blended with PHBV to prepare fully bio-based blends. In order to improve the compatibility and toughness of the BEPE/PHBV blends, epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polyesters (EHBP) were synthesized, which could be homogeneously dispersed into the PHBV/BEPE blends and improve the compatibility between the two phases of the matrix. The results showed that compared to those of the PHBV/BEPE blends, the elongation at break, impact strength and tensile toughness of the PHBV/BEPE blends with 3.0phr EHBP were enhanced by 134.2 %, 76.8 %, and 123.5 %, respectively. The crystallization study demonstrated the crystallization rate of PHBV/BEPE blends decreased due to the addition of EHBP. The reasons lied in that the addition of EHBP leads to chemical cross-linking between PHBV and BEPE. Meanwhile, the formation of hydrogen bonding, co-crystallization and chain entanglement increased the adhesion between PHBV and BEΡE, which generated the superior toughness of the blends.

Functionalization of poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) and its compatibilizing effect on PBAT/thermoplastic starch blends

Abstract:Schematic description of the development of morphology for PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends. Poly(butylene adipate‐co‐butylene terephthalate) (PBAT)/thermoplastic starch (TPS) blends were prepared by melt blending. However, the processability and practical application of PBAT/TPS blends are limited by their poor compatibility. To enhance the compatibility between PBAT and TPS, PBAT was functionalized by maleic anhydride (MA) to prepare PBAT‐MA, and then it was employed as a compatibilizer for PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends. The effects of PBAT‐MA on the tensile properties, rheological properties, morphology, and dynamic mechanics of PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends were studied in detail. Rheological results revealed that the interaction between PBAT‐MA and TPS enhanced the segment entanglement ability and improved the compatibility of the blends, which enhanced the tensile properties of the blends. Compared with the PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS (50/0/50) blend, the tensile strength of the PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS (40/10/50) blend increased from 9.2 to 15.8 MPa, and the elongation at break increased from 326.9% to 1017.6%. The dynamic mechanical results showed that the Tg of PBAT and TPS were close to each other after the addition of PBAT‐MA, which confirmed that the compatibility of the blend was improved. This study provides a feasible approach to preparing high‐performance and cost‐effective PBAT/PBAT‐MA/TPS blends while expanding the application prospects of PBAT in the packaging industry and agricultural film.

Abstract:The inherent shortcomings of fully biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) copolyesters including low strength, modulus, and melt viscoelasticity were addressed by melt blending of PBAT with high-stiffness and biological poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB). An epoxy-based chain extender was used to increase interfacial adhesion of partially miscible PBAT/P34HB (70wt/30wt) blends. The addition of chain extender refined phase-separated morphology of blends from SEM and decreased the degree of crystallinity by DSC. Compared with neat PBAT, PBAT/P34HB blends with chain extender showed much higher melt viscosity and elasticity, as indicated by rheological properties analyses. Compared with the PBAT/P34HB blend without chain extender, the breaking strength and elongation at break of PBAT/P34HB blend with incorporation of 1 wt% ADR were increased by 91.8% and 58.7%, respectively. It could be concluded that the combination of blending and chain-extension reaction simultaneously improved the strength, elongation at break, and melt viscoelasticity, which contributed to the suitability of biodegradable polymer blends for a wider range of end-use applications.

Abstract:Glycidyl methacrylate grafted poly(ethylene octane) copolymer(POE-g-GMA) was used as modifiers to improve the toughness of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET)/Poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) blends.The influence of PET and PBT ratio change on the properties of the blends was investigated.The results show that brittle-ductile transition takes place with 15%～20% POE-g-GMA addition.Impact strength value of 890 J/m is achieved which displays the super-toughness.Shear yielding of matrix and cavitation of rubber particles are the major toughening mechanisms of the rubber toughened PET/PBT blends.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) is a kind of bio-based and biodegradable polyester and has shown promise in a variety of fields, but its wider application is limited due to its brittle property. Therefore, in order to improve the ductility of PLA, we synthesized bio-based and biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-copolybutylene furandicarboxylate) (PBAF70) and blended with PLA. The blend's structure, mechanical properties, thermal properties, crystallization properties, and rheological properties were characterized. The results reveal that when the amount of PBAF70 varies from 0 to 30 wt%, the elongation at break increases from 5.7 to 222%, indicating that PBAF70 enhanced the ductility of PLA. At the same time, XRD results showed that stretching-induced crystallization occurred in PBAF70 during the stretching process. The strongly electronegative oxygen atoms in the furan ring may increase the interaction and the compatibility between PBAF70 and PLA. Therefore, the glass transition temperature of PBAF70 is not obvious in the DSC curves of the blends, and the rheological results show that the complex viscosity of the blends is greater than that of PLA. Due to the addition of PBAF70, PLA can only crystallize at a higher temperature, and the addition of PBAF70 hinders the cold crystallization of PLA. It can be seen from SEM that the cross section of the blend is rough, while the PLA is smooth. When the amount of PBAF70 was the same as that of PBAT, the elongation at break of PLA/PBAF70 was better than PLA/PBAT.
