Abstract:Chemical looping has been proposed as an emerging technology for large-scale hydrogen storage with the advantages of high volumetric hydrogen storage density, environmental compatibility, and safety. However, to ensure sufficient redox activity, conventional oxygen carrier materials must be operated at a temperature higher than 800 degrees C, leading to the rapid deterioration on the storage capacity over several cycles. In this work, we report a ternary ferrite-spinel material Cu0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 for chemical looping hydrogen storage and production. The material exhibits high volumetric hydrogen storage density (65.58 g.L-1) and average hydrogen production rate (142 mu mol.g(-1).min(-1)) at 550 degrees C. The performance is maintained with negligible deactivation over repetitive redox cycles. The high performance can be attributed to the ability of Cu and Co to improve the reduction and the reversible phase change during the oxidation stage at moderate temperatures. The performance of the Cu0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 is comparable to the state-of-the-art Rh-FeOx containing rare earth metals, which enables its potential in industry application. Abstract:Shifting chemical looping from high temperatures to intermediate temperatures could mitigate the materials from sintering and benefit for longer durability as well as process economy. However, oxygen carriers cannot perform sufficiently due to the degrading effect at lower temperatures, resulting in the decrease of hydrogen production ability. Although doping precious metals can improve the poor performance at intermediate temperatures, the high cost impeded their large-scale application. In this paper, a range of oxygen carrier materials consisted of earth abundant elements were prepared for chemical looping hydrogen production. The results indicated that CoFe2O4 exhibited the highest hydrogen yield of 11.9 mmol.g(-1) and hydrogen production rate of 0.051 mmol g(-l).s(-1) at 650 degrees C, which was 1.7 times higher than that of Fe2O3. A combined experimental and DFT calculation method was used to understand the mechanism behind the performance. The results indicated that the synergistic effect between Co and Fe increased the reactivity of the ferrite materials. The enhanced hydrogen production performance was attributed to the high reduction degree and reversible phase change. This study can be also extended to develop more active oxygen carrier for chemical looping processes at intermediate temperatures. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:Preparing the oxygen storage material capable of being highly reduced with desirable stability is important to reduce the solid circling rate in a fluidized bed chemical looping reactor. Nevertheless, the high oxygen carrier reduction degree would accelerate sintering. In this work a Mn0.5Fe0.5(FeAl)O-x material is synthesized as the oxygen carrier of chemical looping hydrogen production process. It exhibits a good redox stability during 30 cycles even operated at reduction degree of 0.8. In fixed bed tests, the Mn0.5Fe0.5(FeAl)O-x material shows a high and stable hydrogen yield of 2.1 mmol/g at 20th cycle, while the CO completely converts to CO2. In contrast, the deactivation can be obviously observed in the case of Fe2O3 oxygen carrier. The hydrogen yield is only 0.44 mmol/g at 20th cycle which is about one fifth of Mn0.5Fe0.5(FeAl)O-x sample.

Abstract:The reduction level for a metal oxides carrier determines the final hydrogen yield for a chemical looping hydrogen generation process. Nevertheless, when the oxygen carrier is reduced at a high level, the sintering of materials would be accelerated. In this paper, we prepare a Cu0.2Fe0.8(FeAl)O-x spinel material and investigate its hydrogen production performance. The results indicate that it exhibits a good redox stability even at reduction level of 0.75 during 20 cycles. In contrast, the deactivation of Fe2O3 oxygen carrier can be obviously observed in the first few cycles. This enable the material with stable hydrogen production at a high yield about 7 mmol/g, which is 3.5 times higher than that of Fe2O3. Upon SEM and XRD characterization techniques, we find that the reason of the both good stability and high hydrogen yield is that the ability of spinel support to inhibit sintering of Cu and Fe active compositions. Abstract:Operating chemical looping process at mid-temperatures (550–750 °C) presents exciting potential for the stable production of hydrogen. However, the reactivity of oxygen carriers is compromised by the detrimental effect of the relatively low temperatures on the redox kinetics. Although the reactivity at mid-temperature can be improved by the addition of noble metals, the high cost of these noble metal containing materials significantly hindered their scalable applications. In the current work, we propose to incorporate earth-abundant metals into the iron-based spinel for hydrogen production in a chemical looping scheme at mid-temperatures. Mn0.2Co0.4Fe2.4O4 shows a high hydrogen production performance at the average rate of ∼0.62 mmol g−1 min−1 and a hydrogen yield of ∼9.29 mmol g−1 with satisfactory stability over 20 cycles at 550 °C. The mechanism studies manifest that the enhanced hydrogen production performance is a result of the improved oxygen-ion conductivity to enhance reduction reaction and high reactivity of reduced samples with steam. The performance of the oxygen carriers in this work is comparable to those noble-metal containing materials, enabling their potential for industrial applications.

Abstract:Reverse water gas shift on the basis of chemical looping technology provides a viable method for efficiently converting CO2 to CO for hydrocarbons at moderate temperature (<750 degrees C). However, the commonly available oxygen carrier materials are insufficiently active because of the degrading effect at relatively low temperatures. In this paper, we present several Co, Mn codoped ferrites in search of oxygen carrier materials as highly active redox materials for a midtemperature chemical looping CO2 splitting process. The results show that up to similar to 142.3 mu mol.g(-1). min(-1) of CO production rate and similar to 8.8 mmol.g(-1) of CO yield are achieved by Mn0.2Co0.8Fe2O4 at 650 degrees C. The production rate and yield of CO of the codoped ferrites during the CO2 splitting process are comparable to those of the state-of-the-art perovskites which commonly contain rare-metal elements.

Abstract:The use of binary oxygen carrier allows for the materials of enhanced activity or stability during chemical looping process. However, the lack of mechanical understanding of the origin of the improvements hindered the rational design and control of the doping process in the oxygen carrier production. Here, we synthesized a series of M0.6Fe2.4Oy (M = Ni, Cu, Co, Mn) binary spinel materials and carried out various characterization techniques to study how the dopants influenced the material phase change, the oxygen transfer as well as the chemical looping performance. The results showed the chemical looping reactivity can be related to the oxygen transformation between lattice oxygen and oxygen vacancy, which was determined by the redox properties of both dopants and iron. The metal in tetrahedral site for Cu, Mn, Ni-doped sample were relatively stable, limiting oxygen transformation ability. In comparison, Co dopant promoted the reducibility of iron in tetrahedral site as well as metals in other sites, making almost all lattice oxygen rapidly transformed to oxygen vacancy during reduction. This was the main cause for the subsequent high hydrogen production rate (average similar to 0.02 mmol. g(-1).s(-1)) and yield (similar to 15.9 mmol.g(-1)). Upon cycling, the phase separation of single oxides from Co0.6Fe2.4Oy and Mn0.6Fe2.4Oy spinels led to the decreased ability of oxygen transformation. However, the performance was extremely stable for Cu0.6Fe2.4Oy with reversible phase change between spinel and (Fe, Cu) wusitite by the Cu-Fe interaction. Abstract:Developing the oxygen carrier of high reduction degree and redox stability has key importance to the chemical looping hydrogen production. However, high reduction degree of oxygen carrier often leads to severe sintering and poor redox stability. Therefore, the trade-off between such two aspects of it must be considered. In this paper, a Co0.5Fe0.5(-FeAl)O-x material was reported as an oxygen carrier and an investigation on the performance of its chemical looping hydrogen production was conducted. It exhibited a stable and high hydrogen yield of 8.53 mmol/g during 20 cycles even at the reduction degree of 0.75. Upon comparison, it was found that the obvious deactivation occurred in Fe2O3 material when its reduction degree was higher than 0.25. Upon various characterization techniques, we found that the high performance of such material was rightly because of the reversible exsolution and dissolution of its active compositions from and into the parent spinel support. Abstract:The sintering of oxygen carrier materials can be circumvented by operating chemical looping at relatively low temperatures ( < 750 degrees C). However, low temperature has a degrading effect on the redox kinetics of the materials and thereby limited efficiencies. In the current work, we report several Co, Cu co-doped spinel-structured ferrites as effective redox materials in the chemical looping scheme for CO2 thermo splitting at 650 degrees C. Cu0.2Co0.8Fe2O4 presents high average CO2 splitting rate of similar to 144.9 mu mol.g(-1).min(-1) and CO yield of similar to 9.0 mmol.g(-1) with satisfactory stability over cyclic redox operations. The improved performance can be attributed to the improved reduction of iron oxides by Cu, Co co-dopant, and the reversible phase change of the reduced sample in the CO2 splitting stage. Additionally, increasing Cu doping amount leads to the formation of insufficiently active impurities which is unfavorable for the CO2 thermo-splitting. The synergy in this work can be helpful for the design of the redox materials at moderate temperatures.

Abstract:Operating chemical looping at moderate temperatures circumvents the issue that the sintering of oxygen carrier materials is serious at typical operating conditions, 800-950 °C. However, lower temperatures can lead to deterioration on the reaction kinetics and thereby the low H2 production rate and yield. Here, we present several doped spinel oxides consisting of earth-abundant elements for chemical looping water splitting. By virtue of the ability of the Cu dopant to improve the reduction of the Co-based binary spinel, the high reducibility of the dopants in the reduction period, as well as the phase reversibility in the water splitting period, Cu0.25Co0.25Fe2.5Oy shows a high hydrogen yield (∼11.9 mmol g-1) and an average hydrogen production rate (∼137.7 μmol g-1 min-1) at 550 °C, with negligible decays in repetitive redox cycles. The performance of this material is comparable to that of the state-of-the-art perovskites which usually contain rare-earth metals, enabling its potential in industrial implementation.

Abstract:Operating oxygen carrying materials under a relatively low temperature has been the most important goal for the scalable application of chemical looping hydrogen production, so as to increase the durability and process economy. However, low temperatures have a degrading effect on the kinetics of the redox reactions, when it comes to the hydrogen production, leading to decreased oxygen storage capacity and thereby the low hydrogen yield and production rate. Although improved performance at intermediate temperatures can be found in materials composed of rare earth oxides, the high cost hindered the industrial application of these materials. In this paper, we prepared a series of binary oxygen carrier materials (CoFeOy, NiFeOy, CuFeOy) and investigated the chemical looping hydrogen production performance at intermediate temperatures. CoFeOy exhibited the highest hydrogen yield (similar to 11.17 mmol g(-1)) and peak hydrogen production rate (similar to 0.23 mmol g(-1) s(-1)) at 650 degrees C. To explore the synergistic effects causing the improved performance, XPS and TPR study was carried out. The results exhibited that the full reduction of Fe3O4 to FeO can be found at similar to 800 degrees C for CoFeOy, whist Co dopant was highly reducible with reversible phase change in the whole redox period at the intermediate temperature. The redox chemistry obtained in this work can be helpful for the design of the oxygen carrier materials for low temperature chemical looping applications.

Abstract:Chemical looping technology holds great potential on efficient CO2 splitting with much higher CO production and CO2 splitting rate than photocatalytic processes. Conventional oxygen carrier requires high temperature (typically 850-1000 degrees C) to ensure sufficient redox activity, but the stable and high CO2 conversion is favored at a lower temperature, leading to the degrading on the reaction kinetics as well as the low CO production and CO2 splitting rate. In this paper, we prepared several ternary spinels and demonstrated their performance for chemical looping CO2 splitting at moderate temperatures. Using the promotion effect of Cu to cobalt ferrite reduction and reversible phase change of the reduced metals, Cu 0.4 Co 0.6 Fe2O4 exhibits high CO2 splitting rate (similar to 144.6 mu mol g(-1) min(-1)) and total CO production (similar to 9100 mu mol g(-1)) at 650 degrees C. The high performance of this earth-abundant spinel material is also consistent in repeated redox cycles, enabling their potential in industrial use. Abstract:The chemical looping process,where an oxygen carrier is reduced and oxidized in a cyclic manner,offers a promising option for hydrogen production through splitting water because of the much higher water splitting efficiency than solar electrocatalytic and photocatalytic process.A typical oxygen carrier has to comprise a significant amount of inert support,to maintain stability in multiple redox cycles,thereby resulting in a trade-off between the reaction reactivity and stability.Herein,we proposed the use of ion-conductive yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) support Fe2O3 to prepare oxygen carriers materials.The obtained Fe2O3/YSZ composites showed high reactivity and stability.Particularly,Fe2O3/YSZ-20 (oxygen storage capacity,24.13％) exhibited high hydrogen yield of ～10.30 mmol g 1 and hydrogen production rate of ～0.66 mmol g 1 min-1 which was twice as high as that of Fe2O3/Al2O3.Further,the transient pulse test indicated that active oxygen diffusion was the rate-limiting step during the redox process.The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement revealed that the YSZ support addi-tion facilitated oxygen diffusion of materials,which contributed to the improved hydrogen production performance.The support effect obtained in this work provides a potentially efficient route for the modification of oxygen carrier materials.

Abstract:Chemical looping reforming coupled with water splitting (CLR-WS) offers a way for negative carbon H2 production when using bio-waste as raw materials. Iron-based oxides are highly anticipated as oxygen carriers (OCs), while the commercial application is hampered by the harsh conditions and low stability. High entropy materials (HEMs), including high entropy oxides (HEOs) and high entropy alloys (HEAs), have displayed multiple active catalytic sites with excellent stability in the field of electrochemistry and photochemistry. However, the family has rarely been studied in CLR-WS before. Herein, (Ni0.2Co0.2Ca0.2Cu0.2Mg0.2)Fe2O4 was synthesized and the H2 yield of 12.66 mmol/g OC with the purity of 99.1 % was exhibited at 700 °C, proved to be at the forefront of the existing literatures. This study first creates a sustainable loop between HEO and HEA and achieves highly efficient and stable H2 production, paving an avenue for the large-scale application of HEM in thermochemical process.

Iron Oxides with Gadolinium-Doped Cerium Oxides As Active Supports for Chemical Looping Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Supporting materials are often employed to enhance the stability of iron oxides oxygen carriers, but the reactivity is compromised for the dilution of the active phase. Here, we report several iron oxides supported by ionic conducting gadolinium-doped cerium oxides (GDC) for efficient chemical looping hydrogen production. The results show that GDC support can simultaneously improve redox stability and activity. Specifically, the produced Fe2O3/Gd0.3Ce0.7O3-delta exhibits a high hydrogen production rate of similar to 0.71 mmol.g(-1).min(-1) and hydrogen yield of similar to 10 mmol.g(-1) with negligible decay through 20 redox cycle. When using methane as the reducing agent, Fe2O3/Gd0.3Ce0.7O3-delta shows high methane conversion of 75.67% and much lower carbon deposition than Fe2O3. The high performance is attributed to the improved oxide ion-conductivity through the oxygen carrier, which is further verified as the ability of the GDC support to accelerate the oxygen diffusion in the bulk. The explored support effects in this work can be extended to design oxygen carrier materials with both high activity and stability.

Abstract:Chemical looping is a novel process in clean energy conversion with inherent CO2 sequestration. For successfully operating the chemical looping, the cyclic material must meet a variety of criteria, such as high dispersion of the cyclic phase on the support, large external surface area, and small crystallite size, etc. in attempt to better activity and stability. In this paper, we applied a colloidal crystal templated sol–gel synthesis route to produce materials for chemical looping with hydrogen storage. To understand the role of template in the sol–gel process, two samples prepared with or without template were investigated by various characterization techniques. The results showed the template could not only promote the homogeneity of the metallic precursors, but also efficiently control the material morphology. The resulting high dispersion and confinement effects endowed this material better activity and stability in chemical looping multicycles. Our current experiments demonstrated this strategy can be used as a platform for convenient incorporation of a variety of structural features, and we anticipated it can be extended to synthesis more chemical looping materials.
Performance of Fe2O3/LaFeO3 as oxygen carrier in chemical-looping hydrogen generation

Abstract:Fe2O3 / LaFeO3 was prepared by citric acid complexation method and used as oxygen carrier in chemical-looping hydrogen generation; the effect of Fe2O3 / CH4 ratio,stream amount and metal loading on the performance of Fe2O3 / LaFeO3 as oxygen carrier at 900 ℃ and atmospheric pressure were investigated. The results showed that the oxygen carrier performs best with CH4 conversion of 60% and single-loop H2 output of 45 mL,when the ratio of Fe2O3 / CH4,stream input and Fe loading are 2,0. 1 mL,15%,respectively. The XRD and H2-TPR results suggest that the active site is the adsorbed oxygen rather than metal oxide; the easier for the reduction of the adsorbed oxygen,the higher are the conversion of CH4 and the output of H2. Moreover,the oxygen carrier is still in perovskite structure and CH4 conversion and H2 output remain stable even after 60 cycles.

Abstract:Experimental study was carried out for chemical-looping combustion of simulated gas with iron-based oxygen carriers in a fluidized bed.Experimental results show that high CO2 concentration can be obtained at initial reactions.The conversion of CO decreases first and increases thereafter with reduction/oxidization cyclic numbers,while the H2 conversion remains 100% during the whole process of experiments.The yield of CO2 gradually increases and finally remains constant with cyclic numbers.The reactivity of oxygen carriers is high during reduc-tion/oxidization cyclic reactions.With the increase of cyclic numbers,their reactivity increased and finally reaches maximum.The oxidization process is very important for the performance of oxygen carriers,and is thus essential for oxygen carriers to keep high reactivity.

Abstract:In this work, the pentalithium ferrite was synthetized by solid-state method, and it was characterized by XRD and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques. Then, H2 production was obtained through a catalytic conversion process; chemical looping partial oxidation (CLPO) of methane using Li5FeO4 as multifunctional material. The catalytic decomposition of methane is an easy way to obtain clean energy, such as hydrogen, but in this process carbon deposition is also possible. The results showed that this material has the ability to convert methane to hydrogen, but it is also capable to donate oxygen atoms from its crystalline network, producing carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide, limiting the carbon deposition on the ceramic surface. In addition, it was demonstrated that this lithium-based ceramic produces hydrogen over a wide temperature range (550–900 °C), with a stable hydrogen production for 3 h at 825 °C. Furthermore, it was possible to achieve a cyclic test of methane decomposition with a pre-oxidation process between each cycle obtaining an outstanding increase in hydrogen production from 10% in cycle 1 to ~ 100% in the cycle 10. This previous stage not only induces an increase in the decomposition of methane, but also avoids carbon deposition accompanied by the production of both COX compounds. Finally, it must be mentioned that Li5FeO4 is capable to chemisorb both carbon oxides produced, promoting high purity hydrogen production.
