Abstract:In order to obtain columnar grains of TiAl alloys by heat treatment instead of directional solidification, a new method named as directional induction heat treatment (DHT) has been put forward. Numerical simulation of temperature field and experiments for DHT has been carried out. Temperature fields of TiAl ingots with different diameters under different loaded power have been calculated. The results show that temperature difference between the surface and axis of TiAl ingots increases with the increasing of diameter from 20 mm to 50 mm or power from 10 kW to 30 kW, under skin effect and heat conduction inner. But there is almost no temperature difference in the ingot with diameter of 20 mm, no matter how high the power is. Based on above calculated results, an ingot with diameter of 20 mm was pushed upwards at intervals of 15 mm and was induction heated under different loaded power correspondingly. The temperature of DHT area could be controlled by adjusting loaded power. In the range of 1732 K–1773 K, β phase transformation will occur and β grains grow up continuously with the pulling of the Ti44Al ingot. In this way, columnar grains of Ti44Al alloy have been obtained.

Abstract:For realizing equiaxed to columnar transition, Ti44Al alloy was processed by directional induction heat treatment (DHT) and mechanical properties were tested. The results show that columnar grains can be obtained and elongation is improved at room temperature. During this heat treatment, Ti44Al alloy was heated in single beta phase domain. The microstructure is consisted of fully lamellar colonies after DHT. The average lamellar spacing is decreased, and the orientation of lamellar colonies with angle of less than 60 degrees is more than 76%. Moreover, grain boundary presents zigzag. Tensile testing shows that strength and elongation of heat-treated alloy are 217 MPa and 1.78% respectively, they are 253 MPa and 1.63% for as-cast Ti44Al alloy. The elongation is increased about 9.2% although tensile strength is decreased. Cleavage fracture is main way in as-cast Ti44Al alloy but a mixed fracture consisting of some cleavage planes and many tearing edges is in Ti44Al alloys after DHT. The fracture morphology shows that deterioration of strength is mainly resulted from the micropores that reserved from as-cast alloy, it means DHT could not eliminate the micropores. The improvement of ductility is caused by decreasing of lamellar spacing and changing orientation lamellar colonies.

Abstract:Directional annealing (DA) is a novel technique to prepare colunmar grains or single crystal in TiAl alloys without melt contamination. Both numerical simulation and experiments were conducted to investigate the directional annealing (DA) of a Ti48Al alloy in this paper. The temperature distribution of the TiAl rod under different DA parameters were calculated and discussed by Finite Element (FE) method. The results showed that the temperature field was significantly influenced by hot zone temperature, moving rate of induction coil, rod diameter and cooling condition. Once induction heating started, the temperature of Ti48Al rod rose rapidly and reached a steady state after about 400 s. The effective heat area (single phase zone) enlarged with the increase of preset temperature. With the decreasing movement rate of induction coil, the α/α+γ interface became more planar, and this rule also applied to the effect of the rod diameter on α/α+γ interface. Under the guidance of calculation results, optimized parameters were proposed to directionally annealing Ti48Al alloy. Rods with a diameter of 8 mm were induction-heated under the hot zone temperatures of 1673 K and 1693 K correspondingly. In the range of α single phase, the transformation of γ→α phase occurred completely and α grains directionally coarsened with the movement of hot zone. In this way, columnar grains in Ti48Al alloy were successfully formed in a solid state.

Phase-field Simulation of Competitive Growth of Grains in a Binary Alloy During Directional Solidification

Abstract:Taking Al-2%mole-Cu binary alloy as an example, the influence of grain orientation on competitive growth of dendrites under different competitive modes was investigated by using the three-dimensional (3-D) phase-field method. The result of phase-field simulation was verified by applying cold spray and directional remelting. In the simulation process, two competitive modes were designed: in Scheme 1, the monolayer columnar grains in multilayer columnar crystals had different orientations; while in Scheme 2, they had the same orientation. The simulation result showed that in Scheme 1, the growth of the dendrites, whose orientation had a certain included angle with the direction of temperature gradient, was restrained by the growth of other dendrites whose direction was parallel to the direction of temperature gradient. Moreover, the larger the included angle between the grain orientation and temperature gradient, the earlier the cessation of dendrite growth. The secondary dendrites of dendrites whose grain orientation was parallel to the temperature gradient flourished with increasing included angles between the grain orientation and temperature gradient. In Scheme 2, the greater the included angle between grain orientation and temperature gradient, the easier the dendrites whose orientation showed a certain included angle with temperature gradient inserted between those grew parallel to the temperature gradient, and the better the growth condition thereafter. Some growing dendrites after intercalation were deflected to the temperature gradient, and the greater the included angle, the lower the deflection. The morphologies of the competitive growth dendrites obtained through simulation can also be found in metallographs of practical solidification experiments. This implies that the two modes of competitive growth of dendrites characterized in the simulation do exist and frequently appear in practical solidification processes.
Optimizing microstructure and mechanical properties of directionally solidified Ti44Al6Nb1Cr2V alloy by directional heat treatment

Abstract:To optimize microstructure and improve mechanical properties of directionally solidified (DS) TiAl alloys containing high alloying elements, DS Ti44Al6Nb1Cr2V alloy was conducted directional heat treatment (DHT) at 1730 K. Results indicate that columnar grains grow up straightly after DHT. It decreases from 17.55° to 10.67° for the angle in the axial direction between columnar grains and ingot. Morphology of B2 phases changes obviously, from reticular to banded microstructure. Lamellar clusters grow up greatly and are parallel to the growth direction of columnar grains. These changes are mainly caused by sufficient atoms diffusion during DHT. α grains grow up adequately and residual B2 phases reduce. Compared with that of DS Ti44Al6Nb1Cr2V alloy (505 MPa and 1.40%), ultimate tensile strength and total strain are 609 MPa and 1.86% for DHT alloy, respectively. They are increased by 21% and 33%, respectively. Fracture shows that many tearing edges and some similar dimples morphology are also found in DHT alloy, besides cleavage planes and cleavage steps. TEM image shows that many dislocations are produced in lamellar γ phases of DS alloy. They wind and intercross each other. Dislocation interaction is lower and the stress concentration is less for DHT alloy, due to thin lamellar γ phases. Furthermore, some stacking faults are also produced in lamellar γ phases, which benefits to improving mechanical properties. Therefore, mechanical properties are improved greatly for DS alloy after DHT.

Abstract:Directional solidification of γ-TiAl alloys with abruptly varying cross-sections was performed in yttria molds using an electromagnetic cold crucible. The solid–liquid interface at different growth positions was revealed by quenching using a liquid metal coolant, and the temperature field was mapped with the assistance of a finite element simulation. On the basis of these findings, the process of grain growth was summarized. The columnar–equiaxed transition was found to occur during directional solidification, and a criterion for continuous growth was established, which demonstrates that increasing the withdrawing rate or decreasing the nucleation rate can promote continuous growth. The continuity of columnar grains is confirmed by analysis in orientation evolution which also reconstructs the orientation of α and β grains at elevated temperatures. The degree of directionality of microstructures at elevated temperatures is determined from the angle between the preferential growth direction and the actual growth direction of the β phase. It is found that the degree of directionality increases with increasing withdrawing rate and nucleation rate.
Study on improving directional microstructure of Ti44Al6Nb1Cr alloy by continuous regional phase transformation

Abstract:To improve the directionally solidified (DS) microstructure and mechanical properties of high-Nb containing TiAl alloys, DS Ti44Al6Nb1Cr alloy was directionally heat treated (DHT) with pulling velocity of 4.17 μm/s at 1750 K. Microstructure and grains orientation were characterized by the OM, SEM, TEM and EBSD. Chemical composition and phase component were detected by the EDS and XRD. Results indicate that wide columnar grains are formed along the axial direction after DHT. Microstructure is still fully lamellar and composed of α2, γ and B2 phases. Crystallographic orientation relationship among phases (α2, γ and B2) is not changed. Lamellar clusters in columnar grains change from blocky to columnar, and the reticular B2 phases become banded structure after DHT. During DHT, the β phase transforms into α phase continuously and α grains grow up as columnar clusters. Nb and Cr atoms can diffuse more adequately under the influence of directional heat flow and segregate at boundaries of columnar clusters. Therefore, lamellar clusters and B2 phases are distributed almost in parallel along the axial direction of columnar grains at room temperature. Tensile testing shows that the yield strength, ultimate strength and total strain of the DHT alloy are increased to 574 MPa, 636 MPa and 2.28% from 422 MPa, 523 MPa and 3.03% of as DS alloy, respectively. The tensile strength increases about 36% and this improvement is mainly caused by the directionally aligned B2 phases. In addition, a large number of dislocations and stacking fault bands are formed in lamellar γ phases of DHT alloy after testing, which also plays an important role in improving mechanical properties of DS alloy.

Abstract:The microstructures and morphologies of directionally solidified Ti–47Al alloys with different growth rates ranging from 1 to 200 μm/s were investigated using the Bridgman directionally solidified method. The results showed that numerous columnar grains were formed along the growth direction with the onset of directional solidification. With a variation in the growth rate, the solid/liquid interface changed from a flat to cellular and to dendritic interface. The flat-to-cellular interface transition rate of the Ti–47Al alloy varied from 1 to 3 μm/s. When the growth rate was higher than 10 μm/s, the solid/liquid interface showed typical dendritic growth. During the directional solidification process, the main phase of the directionally solidified Ti–47Al alloy was the α phase, which can be attributed to the solute segregation, supercooling of the components, and contamination of the alloy melt by the Y2O3 ceramic shell. After reaching the steady growth state during the directional solidification process, the solidification path of the alloy was: L→α→α+γ→(α2+γ) + γ. With an increase in the growth rate, the primary dendrite spacing (λ) and lamellar spacing (λs) of the alloy decreased gradually.

Abstract:The directionally solidified column crystal DZ4125 superalloy was prepared by Bridgman directional solidification. The microstructure evolution and competitive growth of oriented crystal at a constant withdrawal rate were studied. The results show that the primary dendrite spacing increases and the sizes of the gamma' precipitates decrease, as the growth height increases. The morphologies of gamma' precipitates change from irregular butterfly shape into regular cube and sphere shapes, and the size and amount of gamma' phase in the interdendrite are higher than those in the dendritic arm. The gamma+gamma' eutectics and carbides mostly distribute in the interdendritic areas and the morphology of carbides gradually changes from small block into strip or skeleton shape with the increase of growth height. Moreover, due to the competitive growth proceeding, the number of columnar crystals decrease significantly with the increase of growth height and the central grains of the initial segment are retained in the final growth zone. This is mainly due to the existence of convex solid -liquid interface, the crystals diverge towards the furnace wall and the central grains grow steadily and the edge grains are gradually eliminated.

Abstract:Cyclic heat treatment (CHT) experiments were performed to demonstrate the shear deformation of a TiAl alloy with an aligned lamellar structure. It was shown that for such deformation to occur, the aligned structure must be inclined to the specimen side and heated to the single α region. As the alignment of the lamellar structure was broken gradually during CHT, SD slowed down. When the columnar grains were broken to equiaxed colonies completely, no SD occurred at all.

Abstract:Ti–(50, 52)at%Al alloys were directionally solidified over a wide range of growth velocities. Detailed microstructure evolution was investigated. For Ti–50Al alloys, growths of primary α phase dominated. Only a little peritectic γ phase was found in intercellular or interdendritic regions. For Ti–52Al alloys, corporative growths of both phases were observed. Primary α transformed from cells to dendrites with increase of growth velocities, and γ showed a faceted-growth pattern. The peritectic reaction became dominated when α grew as dendrites at a relatively high velocity. The lamellar orientation evolution was also investigated, which was history-dependant on that in non-melted as-cast crystals.

Abstract:In order to study the factors of columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) of high-Nb TiAl alloys, Ti46Al7Nb0.4W0.6Cr0.1B alloy has been fabricated by cold crucible directional solidification (CCDS) technique under different pulling rate from 3.3 μm/s to 16.7 μm/s. The marco/micro-structure and phase composition near solid–liquid interface have been characterized. Results show that the CET of the high-Nb TiAl alloy occurs with the increase of the pulling rate at the constant temperature gradient. The microstructure of the columnar grain is composed of α2/γ lamellar matrix and a coupling structure of striped-like B2+γ phases. The lamellar colonies in a columnar grain possess the same orientation, while the arrangement direction between the striped-like B2 phase and growth direction is 0° or 45°. A solidification map for CCDS is established which predicts columnar or equiaxed morphology according to the growth rate (R) and temperature gradient (G). The dendrite morphology at the solid–liquid interface after quenching and the CET is controlled by the actual temperature gradient at the tip of the dendrite. Meanwhile, the increase of growth rate and the satisfaction of heterogeneous nucleation conditions are the main factors for CET. The decrease of actual temperature gradient caused by quenching or the increase of liquidus gradient caused by increasing growth rate can increase the maximum supercooling degree ΔTC. When it reached the supercooling degree ΔTN required to form a new nucleus, equiaxed grains will be produced. In addition, the boride in this alloy can act as a heterogeneous nucleation core to promote CET.

Abstract:Bridgman type directional solidification experiments were conducted for Ti-50Al-6Nb alloy at different growth rates. The effect of growth rate on the solidification behavior, phase transition path, microsegregation and the hardness was investigated. Results show that the growth of single beta phase is observed at the low growth rates (<= 10 mu m/s), during which the planar to cellular, then to dendritic growths occur with the increase of the growth rates, and the final microstructure of a fully a(2)/gamma lamellar structure is obtained except a multiphase microstructure (B2 phase, a(2)/gamma) lamellar structure) at 10 mu m/s. The lamellar structure is 45 or 0 to the growth direction after the directional solidification. While the regular dendritic growth of primary alpha phase is observed at the high growth rates (>= 15 mu m/s), and the final microstructure is composed of a(2)/gamma lamellar structure, which is always 90 degrees to the growth direction. Additionally, the hardness in this alloy increases with the increase of the growth rates, which is always smaller than those of other TiAl-based alloys in our studies.
Precipitation behaviors and orientation evolution mechanisms of α phases in Ti-55511 titanium alloy during heat treatment and subsequent hot deformation

Abstract:The precipitation orientation of α phases in a Ti-55511 alloy during the heat treatment and the subsequent hot deformation is investigated. It is observed that the β grains prominently influence the precipitation process of α phases, i.e., for the neighbouring β grains without similar {110} pole, the precipitation orientation of grain boundary (GB) α phases (αGB) keep {0001}//{110}β1 or {0001}//{110}β2 to maintain the burgers orientation relationship (BOR) with the neighbouring β grains. For the neighbouring β grains with similar {110} pole, the {0001} poles of αGB phases precipitate parallel to this similar {110} pole and maintain BOR with the neighbouring β grains. For the neighbouring β grains with multiple similar {110} poles, the {0001} poles of αGB phases precipitate along these similar poles and maintain BOR with the neighbouring β grains. Besides, the interface instability nucleation and sympathetic nucleation are the main nucleation modes of the GB widmanstatten α phase (αWGB), which primarily precipitate within β grains with the similar orientation of αGB phases. The intracrystalline widmanstatten phase (αWI) precipitate in a single β grain with 12 precipitation orientations. The BOR between αWI phases and β grains is destroyed during the subsequent hot compressive deformation.

Abstract:Growth directions (GD) variation of α phase in Ti-49Al (at.%) alloy with solidification parameters were studied by using directional solidification technology. GD of the primary phase (α phase) changed with growth rate (V) and temperature gradient (G). Evolutions of Θ (the angle between the preferred growth direction (PG) and heat flow direction (HD) and Ψ (the angle between GD and HD) with V and G are presented. By controlling the solidification parameters accurately, the grains of α solidified TiAl alloy can grow with <112¯0> direction or close to this direction during directional solidification, which is beneficial to the lamellar orientation control of TiAl alloys. For present experimental conditions, the feasible solidification condition for the lamellar orientation control of TiAl alloy by the seeding technology is: V = 10 μm/s∼20 μm/s and G = 10 K/mm∼12.1 K/mm.

Abstract:The γ-TiAl alloy with a nominal composition of Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr-0.2C directionally solidified by electromagnetic cold crucible was isothermally compressed at different temperatures and strain rates. Experimental results revealed that the peak stress decreased with the increased deformation temperature or decreased strain rate. Subgrains were formed in the interior of the lamellae during thermo-compression and the dislocation walls served as the subgrain boundaries. The dynamic recrystallization grain (DRX) size was larger and a single DRX grain grew at the expense of many lamellae. Slip bands formed during thermo-compression process were in a single direction at a small strain, while the increase in the strain led to the intersections of slip bands in two directions. Kink bands were developed as the strain reached or exceed a critical value, acting as the preferred nucleation sites for recrystallization grains. Moreover, the model for the nucleation of recrystallization grains was given.
Influence of Columnar Grain Boundary on Fracture Behavior of As-Cast Fully Lamellar Ti-46al-0.5w-0.5si Alloy

Abstract:The fracture behavior of fully lamellar γ-TiAl alloys depends on the angle between the lamellar orientation and loading axis, but the role of the presentation of grain boundary cannot be ignored. To investigate the influence of the grain boundary on the initiation and propagation of cracks, the tensile test of the alloy was conducted at room temperature with loading axis parallel and perpendicular to the lamellar orientation, respectively. The cracks adjacent to the fracture zone of the tensile specimens have been investigated to analyze the fracture behavior. Results show that the grain boundary has dual influences on the fracture behavior. When the loading axis is parallel to the lamellar orientation, cracks are preferentially initiated at and propagate along the grain boundaries. When the loading axis is perpendicular to the lamellar orientation, the grain boundaries can prevent the propagation of cracks from running across. Additionally, serrated-shape grain boundaries have a better inhibiting effect on the propagation of cracks than planar boundaries.

Abstract:Grain growth in coarse grained region of fine grained titanium alloy welded joint was studied,and influences of grain coarsening on microstructure transformation and microhardness along the welding seam were measured during gas tungsten arc welding of fine grained Ti-6Al-4V with equiaxed crystal.The results showed deviation of β transus temperature induced by grain sizes of parent metal resulted in less grain growth of coarse grained region in fine grained Ti-6Al-4V than in conventional Ti-6Al-4V.Continued reduction in nucleation of α′ martensite resulted in significant growth directivity of α′ plates in coarse grained region of fine grained Ti-6Al-4V.Moreover,thickening of martensitic lamina at prior β boundaries and lengthening of martensitic plates within grains occurred with increasing grain coarsening in coarse grained region.Compared with conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloy,there was no softened zone in the heat affected zone of fine grained Ti-6Al-4V with grain coarsening in coarse grained region.

Abstract:Abnormal grain growth behaviors of in situ TiB 2 particle-reinforced Al composites under two-step annealing are investigated in this study. Abnormal grain growth occurs after first annealing at 300 °C for 10 h and second-step annealing at 450 °C for 3 min. High-energy grain boundaries with misorientation in the range of 20° ~ 45° are observed to promote grain boundary migration. Abnormally grown-up grains have typical orientation like P, Goss, Copper, {111} < 110 > , {111} < 112 > , and {112} < 110 > , which all own high-energy grain boundaries. TiB 2 particles are effective in pinning the migration of grain boundaries. The grain boundary energy has a greater impact on the abnormal grain growth than the pinning force of TiB 2 particles. Abstract:Ti–45Al–2Cr–2Nb alloy was directionally solidified at different growth rates varying from 0.2 to 1.2mm/min by applying an electromagnetic cold crucible directional solidification technique. It was determined that well-aligned α2 (Ti3Al)/γ(TiAl) lamellar structures, B2 phase and blocky γ phase were generated in columnar grains. The interlamellar spacing (λ) decreases with the increasing growth rate (V) according to the relationship λ∝V−0.48, but the volume fraction of B2 is increased as growth rate is increasing. Results of uniaxial tensile tests show that the B2 phase and the blocky γ phase have significant influence on tensile failure when they are presented in the matrix of α2/γ lamellar structures, because they are usually employed to act as cracking sources during the tension process.
