Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Co-hydrotreating of microalgae (M) and UEO (used engine oil) was examined for the direct production of gasoline and diesel fuels or blending components. The addition of the noble metal catalysts promoted the cracking and in situ hydrogenation of liquid products (oils) and was beneficial for the production of liquid products. Usihg Pt/C as the catalyst, the effects of temperature (350-450 degrees C), time (2-6 h), UEO/M mass ratio (6/0-0/6), catalyst loading (1-60 wt.%), and initial H-2 pressure (0.1-8 MPa) on the yield and quality of the liquid products were studied. A synergistic effect existed during the co-hydrotreating of the UEO and microalgae, which not only favored the production of liquid products but also promoted in situ denitrogenation and deoxygenation. Co-hydrotreating produced an upgraded oil with fuel properties (e.g., density, calorific value) comparable to traditional liquid transportation fuels derived from fossil fuel. The S content (45 ppm) of the upgraded oil produced at 450 degrees C is even below the minimum requirement of China IV diesel (50 ppm). Examination of the composition of the upgraded oils showed the formation of dominant light aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons that could also be used as a chemical feedstock. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The valorization of biomass to produce biofuels has become a heavily investigated field due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental concerns. Among them, the research on deoxygenation of fatty acids or esters derived from biomass as well as municipal sludge organics to produce diesel-like hydrocarbons has become a hot topic. Fatty acid is a key intermediate derived from ester hydrolysis, therefore has attracted more attention as a model compound. In this review, we first introduce and compare the three reaction pathways of hydrodeoxygenation, decarboxylation and decarbonylation, for the deoxygenation of fatty acids and esters. The preference of reaction pathway is closely related to the type of raw materials and catalysts as well as reaction conditions. The special purpose of this review is to summarize the dilemma and possible strategies for deoxygenation of fatty acids, which is expected to provide guidance for future exploration and concentrates. The atom utilization along with stability during reaction in a long time is the most important index for commercial economy. Herein, we propose that the rational design and delicate synthesis of stable single-atom non-noble catalysts may be the best solution. The ultimately goal is aiming to develop sustainable production of green diesel hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is essential to decrease the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. Although many strategies have been developed to provide the linear and branched aliphatic components of SAF, few viable strategies have been demonstrated to supply the aromatic and cycloalkane fraction of the SAF at the necessary scale from bio-based feedstocks. Lignin is the largest natural source of renewable aromatic compounds; however, major challenges in deoxygenation have prevented its use as a feedstock for SAFs. Here, we report a continuous, two-stage catalytic process using molybdenum carbide to deoxygenate lignin from poplar into aromatic hydrocarbons with 87.5% selectivity toward aromatic hydrocarbons at 86% of the theoretical carbon recovery. Tier α fuel property testing indicates that the SAF-range lignin-derived aromatic compounds are likely performance-advantaged across multiple properties relative to conventional jet fuel aromatic compounds. This work demonstrates an effective approach to convert lignin into aromatic SAF blendstocks.

Abstract:Petroleum, one of the fossil fuels, is still the main source for liquid fuel production. Lignin derived from renewable biomass has the potential to replace petroleum. The abundance of aromatic units in lignin makes it potential to produce high-value liquid fuel. This review offers a summary of the extensive study that has been devoted to the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds and the conversion of raw lignin into hydrocarbon liquid fuels. Based on the product classification (cyclohexanes and arenes), different catalytic systems, mainly including catalyst species, solvents and reaction conditions, are analyzed in detail. A model study of lignin-derived compounds (phenolic monomers and dimers) is usually carried out to elaborate on the HDO reaction mechanism. 100% yield of hydrocarbon liquid fuels can be achieved in most tests. With respect to the real lignin-derived bio-oil, however, hydrocarbon yields only reach 16.2%–62.8% due to the various components and high instability of the substrate. The technical barriers and challenges in this part are highlighted throughout. Moreover, the conversion of raw lignin is also comprehensively summarized, which actually combines the depolymerization of lignin and HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil in one pot, and its hydrocarbon yields are generally lower than those of lignin-derived bio-oil. In light of this, the important features of raw lignin that influence the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels are adequately addressed. Overall, this paper focuses on the scientific and technological advances of hydrocarbon liquid fuel production from lignin, and the potential strategies to produce renewable fuels from lignin are discussed.

Abstract:Being the only sustainable source of organic carbon, biomass is playing an ever-increasingly important role in our energy landscape. The conversion of renewable lignocellulosic biomass into liquid fuels is particularly attractive but extremely challenging due to the inertness and complexity of lignocellulose. Here we describe the direct hydrodeoxygenation of raw woods into liquid alkanes with mass yields up to 28.1 wt% over a multifunctional Pt/NbOPO4 catalyst in cyclohexane. The superior performance of this catalyst allows simultaneous conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose and, more significantly, lignin fractions in the wood sawdust into hexane, pentane and alkylcyclohexanes, respectively. Investigation on the molecular mechanism reveals that a synergistic effect between Pt, NbOx species and acidic sites promotes this highly efficient hydrodeoxygenation of bulk lignocellulose. No chemical pretreatment of the raw woody biomass or separation is required for this one-pot process, which opens a general and energy-efficient route for converting raw lignocellulose into valuable alkanes.

Abstract:Practical, economical, and high-selectivity methods of lignin bio-oil upgrading could greatly increase biorefinery productivity and profitability. Herein, we report the efficient production of oxygen-containing fuel via supercritical methanol hydrodeoxygenation (SCM-HDO) of lignin bio-oil with a well-defined Cu/CuZnAlOx catalyst. The fuel range cyclic alcohols were majorly produced from guaiacol and corncob lignin pyrolysis bio-oil with selectivity of 66.67 and 15.90% at 300 °C in 8 h, respectively, via Cu species induced hydrogenation of aromatics rings and inhibited over-deoxygenation of alcoholic hydroxyl groups. The catalyst activity decreased by 28% after five runs of bio-oil HDO due to the oxidation of Cu species and carbon deposit, where the oxidation of Cu species played the dominant role as the carbon deposit was restrained to as low as 3.64 wt% with the mild catalyst acidity. Meanwhile, the catalyst activity could be easily recovered through a calcination-reduction process to remove the carbon deposit and reactivate the Cu species. The results offered appealing opportunities for tailoring more efficient approaches for the upgrading of lignin bio-oil to alternative biofuels.

Abstract:Novel techniques for upgrading heavy lignin bio-oil, the phenolic oligomer from lignin depolymerization, are of great significance for achieving better utilization efficiency of carbon element in lignin. In this study, we proposed an efficient approach for producing high-quality oxygen-containing fuel from the renewable lignin bio-oil via the C-O bond cleavage and the subsequent hydrogenation over the Cu and Ni supported on alkaline MgO. Noticeably, the optimized Cu6Ni20/MgO resulted in inspiring yields of ethylbenzene (88.6%) and cyclohexanol (98.3%) from lignin dimers, and a colorless fuel with a high-heating value of 31.4 MJ kg−1 from the realistic lignin bio-oil. The results of catalyst characterization also unveiled that introducing Cu species reduced the formation of NiMgOx solid solution, which increased the content of Ni0 and consequently promoted the performance of upgrading lignin bio-oil. Furthermore, the recondensation of phenolic oligomers could be effectively restrained by the alkaline MgO. In addition, a plausible mechanism was proposed. Therefore, this work opens a promising avenue to designing efficient strategies for utilizing the heavy components from lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:Biofuels can be produced from lignin and plant/ animal oil by thermochemical conversion. On the basis of traditional methods, a novel strategy was proposed for the first time to produce diesel-like liquid fuel from lignin-derived bio-oil and plant/animal oil by hydrodeoxygenation-in situ esterification, which can fully utilize both aromatic units and -OCH3 groups of lignin. Guaiacol and lauric acid were selected as model compounds of two feedstocks, respectively. Cyclohexyl laurate and methyl laurate with cetane values of 59.2 and 63.9, respectively, were obtained, of which the fuel properties satisfied the biodiesel standard. The yield of esters reached 112.5 mol % with nearly complete conversion of guaiacol. In contrast, the presence of the additional -OCH3 group linked to the sixth carbon of 2,6-dimethoxylphenol hindered the formation of cyclohexanol while increasing the yield of methanol. In addition, lignin-derived dimers could also be efficiently converted into the diesel-like liquid fuel rich in esters and cycloalkanes.

Abstract:Bio-oil, produced by the destructive distillation of cheap and renewable lignocellulosic biomass, contains high energy density oligomers in the water-insoluble fraction that can be utilized for diesel and valuable fine chemicals productions. Here, we show an efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalyst that combines highly dispersed palladium and ultrafine molybdenum phosphate nanoparticles on silica. Using phenol as a model substrate this catalyst is 100% effective and 97.5% selective for hydrodeoxygenation to cyclohexane under mild conditions in a batch reaction; this catalyst also demonstrates regeneration ability in long-term continuous flow tests. Detailed investigations into the nature of the catalyst show that it combines hydrogenation activity of Pd and high density of both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites; we believe these are key features for efficient catalytic hydrodeoxygenation behavior. Using a wood and bark-derived feedstock, this catalyst performs hydrodeoxygenation of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose-derived oligomers into liquid alkanes with high efficiency and yield.Bio-oil is a potential major source of renewable fuels and chemicals. Here, the authors report a palladium-molybdenum mixed catalyst for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of water-insoluble bio-oil to mixtures of alkanes with high carbon yield.

Abstract:A new approach for the synthesis of jet fuel hydrocarbon from bio-ethanol was developed, the integrated catalytic process of ethanol C-C coupling and heavy alcohols hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was reported. The initial bio-ethanol C-C coupling process was fulfilled directly in aqueous environment over Na/Ni@C catalyst. The obtained high-carbon alcohols can be separated into C4-C7 and C8-C16 alcohols respectively through convenient fractional distillation. The obtained C8-C16 alcohols mainly consist of β-branched primary alcohol, which are desired precursors for jet fuel hydrocarbons. To maintain the branched carbon skeleton in the subsequent alcohol HDO process, the Co-Mo2C catalyst with excellent C-O bonds cleavage and carbon skeleton retention ability were developed. Jet fuel hydrocarbons of 56.7% yield obtained from this approach is mainly C8-C16 branched alkanes, which is beneficial for the cold flow properties. This strategy creates new opportunities for producing alternative jet fuel from the mature bio-ethanol industry.

Abstract:Lignin is the component with the highest carbon content in biomass. The transformation of lignin to high-grade liquid fuels can be achieved via hydrodeoxygenation(HDO) of phenolic intermediates derived from the products of lignin depolymerization. The octane numbers of the hydrodeoxygenation products of phenolic intermediates are quite high. They have vapor pressures and carbon atom number (C6 similar to C10) within the range of gasoline. Thus, these hydrodeoxygenation products would be the most desirable components for a fungible liquid transportation fuel. This is very meaningful to application of lignin. Recently, researches about the hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds develop rapidly. In this paper, the HDO reactions of phenolic compounds using sulfided Mo-based catalyst, noble metal catalyst and inexpensive non-sulfided catalyst are reviewed in detail. It is found that most of the investigated catalysts are bifunctional catalysts, combining the hydrogenation function of active metal with hydrolysis and dehydration of support. The catalytic mechanism for the HDO of phenolic compounds is sketched, and the effects of catalyst supporter on the catalytic activity are also discussed. Furthermore, the current technique challenges are summarized, and future technologic explorations for the efficient hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds are proposed.

Abstract:The continual growth in commercial aviation fuels and more strict environmental legislations have led to immense interest in developing green aviation fuels from renewable lignocellulosic biomass. This work demonstrated a novel transformation of biomass into bin-jet and diesel fuels. The transformation included following three reaction steps: (i) the catalytic pyrolysis of sawdust into low-carbon aromatics, (ii) the production of C8-C15 aromatics by the aromatic alkylation and (iii) the production of C8-C15 cyclic alkanes by the hydrogenation of C8-C15 aromatics. The production of the desired C8-C15 aromatics with the highest selectivity of 92.4% was achieved by the low temperature alkylation reactions of the low carbon aromatics using the ionic liquid of [bmim]Cl-2AlCl(3) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminate). The biofuels derived from sawdust basically met the main specifications of jet fuels. Abstract:A physical mixture of Ru/C and Nb2O5 is an effective catalyst for upgrading lignin monomers under low H-2 pressure at 250 degrees C to a clean cut of hydrocarbon liquid fuels. The reaction solvent is water with a small amount of methanol additive. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was evaluated using dihydroeugenol (DHE) as an exemplary lignin monomer model. Under optimized conditions, 100% conversion of DHE and very high selectivity to propyl cyclohexane (C9 hydrocarbon) was achieved. Nb2O5 was prepared at a low temperature (450 degrees C) and was shown to contain acid sites that enhance the production of fully deoxygenated products. The methanol additive serves as a hydrogen source for the Ru/C catalysed reduction of the aromatic ring. In addition, when a substrate mixture of DHE, isoeugenol and 4-allylsyringol simulating lignin products was employed, 100% conversion to propyl cyclohexane (76%) and propyl benzene (24%) was observed, thereby suggesting the general applicability of this catalyst system for funneling lignin monomers into a clean cut of hydrocarbon liquid fuels. This study sheds light on the function of each catalyst component and provides a simple and green utilization of biomass monomers as a feedstock for renewable hydrocarbon fuels.

Abstract:Bifunctional catalysts based on nickel supported on ZSM-5 and BETA zeolites were studied in the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derived model compounds as well as in surrogate mixtures simulating the light fraction of lignin fast pyrolysis bio-oil. A screening of the hydrodeoxygenation reaction conditions (temperature, time, H 2 pressure, catalyst amount) was carried out using the simplest phenolic compound, phenol. As in real lignin bio-oils more complex phenolic compounds are present, a series of relevant alkyl- and methoxy-substituted phenol and benzene (o- and m-cresol, catechol, anisole, guaiacol, syringol, creosol and 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene) were also investigated as feedstocks. Furthermore, the effect of the different porous and acidic properties of the zeolitic supports was investigated in the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol. The conversion of the model phenolics and the yield of the respective (alkyl)cyclohexanes at relatively mild conditions (220 o C, 50 bar H 2 , 1 h) were in the range of 80-100% and 47-83%, respectively, being dependent mainly on the complexity/side-chain group of the phenolic/benzylic ring and on the balanced content of Brønsted acid sites of increased strength. Regarding the hydrodeoxygenation of the surrogate mixture (C 7 -C 10 phenolics), 100% hydrodeoxygenation efficiency was achieved towards >60% yield of (alkyl)cyclohexanes (C 6 -C 9 hydrocarbons). All hydrodeoxygenation tests were conducted in hexadecane as solvent/substrate in order to simulate model co-processing (i.e. bio-based phenolics with petroleum derived feedstocks) conditions. Reusability tests revealed the stability of the catalysts which showed partial (30%) deactivation after the third catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A metal-free hydrodeoxygenation process was developed for the production of hydrocarbons from biomass-derived fatty acids and derivatives. Biomass-derived fatty acids and derivatives were converted to alkanes and alkenes under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, this catalytic system can also be applied to convert real biomass with satisfactory results.

Abstract:In this work, a "cyclopentanone-vanillin" strategy was proposed for the preparation of jet fuel range cycloalkanes from lignocellulose-derived ketones and lignin-derived aldehydes via aldol condensation and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Ethanolamine lactate ionic liquid (LAIL) exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and vanillin. Desired mono-condensation and bicondensation products were obtained with yield of 95.2% at 100 degrees C. It is found that the synergy effects between amino group of ethanolamine and hydroxyl group of lactic acid play a key role in the aldol condensation. The condensation products were converted into cycloalkanes by HDO over 5%Pd/Nb2O5 catalyst. The density of the obtained HDO products is 0.89 g/cm3 and the freezing point is lower than -60 degrees C. These results suggest that the resulted cycloalkanes can be used as additives to improve the density and low-temperature fluidity of the jet fuels.
