Abstract:In this work, a series of ZrO2-supported Cu, Ni and bimetallic Cu-Ni catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in the in situ hydrogenation and decarboxylation of oleic acid using methanol as a hydrogen donor. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was a Cu-Ni alloy that was highly dispersed on mixed m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2. The bimetallic Cu-Ni/ZrO2 nanostructures not only exhibited better catalytic activity for the conversion of oleic acid compared to monometallic Cu/ZrO2 and Ni/ZrO2 catalysts but also demonstrated good reuse performance. The formation of the Cu-Ni alloy facilitated the decarboxylation reaction and inhibited the cracking reaction, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The good stability of Cu-Ni/ZrO2 was primarily due to the good hydrothermal stability of the ZrO2 support.
Encapsulated Ni-Co Alloy Nanoparticles As Efficient Catalyst for Hydrodeoxygenation of Biomass Derivatives in Water

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the most promising strategies to transform oxy-gen-rich biomass derivatives into high value-added chemicals and fuels, but highly challenging due to the lack of highly efficient nonprecious metal catalysts. Herein, we report for the first time of a facile synthetic approach to controllably fabricate well-defined Ni-Co alloy NPs confined on the tip of N-CNTs as HDO catalyst. The resultant Ni-Co alloy catalyst possesses outstanding HDO perfor-mance towards biomass-derived vanillin into 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol in water with 100％con-version efficiency and selectivity under mild reaction conditions, surpassing the reported high per-formance nonprecious HDO catalysts. Impressively, our experimental results also unveil that the Ni-Co alloy catalyst can be generically applied to catalyze HDO of vanillin derivatives and other aromatic aldehydes in water with 100％conversion efficiency and over 90％selectivity. Important-ly, our DFT calculations and experimental results confirm that the achieved outstanding HDO cata-lytic performance is due to the greatly promoted selective adsorption and activation of C=O, and desorption of the activated hydrogen species by the synergism of the alloyed Ni-Co NPs. The find-ings of this work affords a new strategy to design and develop efficient transition metal-based cata-lysts for HDO reactions in water.
Selective production of high-value fuel via catalytic upgrading of bio-oil over nitrogen-doped carbon-alumina hybrid supported cobalt catalysts

Abstract:Bio-oil derived from biomass fast pyrolysis can be upgraded to gasoline and diesel alternatives by catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Here, the novel nitrogen-doped carbon-alumina hybrid supported cobalt (Co/NCAn, n = 1, 2.5, 5) catalyst is established by a coagulation bath technique. The optimized Co/NCA2.5 catalyst presented 100 % conversion of guaiacol, high selectivity to cyclohexane (93.6 %), and extremely high deoxygenation degree (97.3 %), respectively. Therein, the formation of cyclohexanol was facilitated by stronger binding energy and greater charge transfer between Co and NC which was unraveled by density functional theory calculations. In addition, the appropriate amount of Lewis acid sites enhanced the cleavage of the C-O bond in cyclohexanol, finally resulting in a remarkable selectivity for cyclohexane. Finally, the Co/NCA2.5 catalyst also exhibited excellent selectivity (93.1 %) for high heating value hydrocarbon fuel in crude bio-oil HDO. This work provides a theoretical basis on N dopants collaborating alumina hybrid catalysts for efficient HDO reaction.

Abstract:Conversion of biomass and waste oils to alkanes for the production of aviation fuel is attracting increasing research interests since it can provide sustainable energies from renewable resources to substitute the fossil fuels. In this process, the deoxygenation of fatty acids to alkanes is the key reaction. However, previous methods of fatty acids deoxygenation require gaseous hydrogen, noble metal catalyst and/or organic solvent, which are adverse to the sustainable development. In this work, a novel and simple method of deoxygenation of fatty acids to alkanes is proposed by using a commercial nickel (Ni) powder as the catalyst without any pre-treatment and water as both environmental-friendly solvent and sustainable hydrogen source. The hydrogen in situ generated from water exhibited a much higher activity than gaseous hydrogen for the deoxygenation of fatty acids, and an alkane yield of 90% was successfully achieved. The Ni catalyst is stable and still maintains high activity after recycles. This proposed process is simple, economical, sustainable and environmental-friendly, thus is promising for the practical application.

Abstract:Bio-oil, produced by the destructive distillation of cheap and renewable lignocellulosic biomass, contains high energy density oligomers in the water-insoluble fraction that can be utilized for diesel and valuable fine chemicals productions. Here, we show an efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalyst that combines highly dispersed palladium and ultrafine molybdenum phosphate nanoparticles on silica. Using phenol as a model substrate this catalyst is 100% effective and 97.5% selective for hydrodeoxygenation to cyclohexane under mild conditions in a batch reaction; this catalyst also demonstrates regeneration ability in long-term continuous flow tests. Detailed investigations into the nature of the catalyst show that it combines hydrogenation activity of Pd and high density of both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites; we believe these are key features for efficient catalytic hydrodeoxygenation behavior. Using a wood and bark-derived feedstock, this catalyst performs hydrodeoxygenation of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose-derived oligomers into liquid alkanes with high efficiency and yield.Bio-oil is a potential major source of renewable fuels and chemicals. Here, the authors report a palladium-molybdenum mixed catalyst for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of water-insoluble bio-oil to mixtures of alkanes with high carbon yield.
Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolics to cycloalkanes over Ni-Co alloy coupled with oxophilic NbOx

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil is a promising route to produce advanced biofuels. How-ever, the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups with high bond strength in bio-oil challenges the development of efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts. In this study, a series of bifunctional catalysts were synthesized by coupling Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support, which was used for the HDO of lignin -derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes. The Ni-Co alloy formed on the bimetallic catalysts during calcina-tion and reduction was verified by TEM, XPS, and H2-TPR measurements, which showed excellent hydro-genolysis activity. The composition of the Ni-Co alloy was the most uniform with a Ni/Co molar ratio of 1, and the catalyst achieved the highest catalytic activity. The oxygen vacancies provided by the NbOx support also enhanced the adsorption of phenolics and promoted the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups by forming a specific configuration. The synergistic catalysis of Ni-Co alloy and oxygen vacancies achieved com-plete conversion of guaiacol with a high cycloalkane selectivity of 98.9 % under optimal conditions (300 degrees C, 3 MPa H2, and 2 h). More importantly, only marginal deactivation occurred on the 5Ni-5Co/NbOx catalyst after 5 cycles and it was also successfully applied to the efficient conversion of other complex lignin-derived phenolics. Therefore, an efficient and economical strategy of coupling the Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support to catalyze the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes was prospective.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty acids into long-chain alkanes for aviation fuels with alcohol hydrogen donor at mild condition over Ni-based catalyst is a practicable subject. However, highly active sites design for Ni-based catalyst remains significant challenges. Herein, a fine NiAl particle catalyst with numerous oxygen vacancy sites was fabricated via hydrothermal and reduction treatment. Introduction of small amount of Al species into Ni catalyst not only reduces the Ni particle size exposing plenty of active sites, but also generates oxygen vacancies in AlO x and sets up charge transfer in Ni-AlO x interfaces, thus guarantees the excellent in-situ HDO activity of fatty acids using isopropanol as hydrogen donor. Density functional theory calculation results further reveal that Ni (111) modified by AlO x with oxygen vacancy improves the charge density in Ni-AlO x interface and enhances the adsorption of fatty acid, facilitating the hydrodeoxygenation process. Benefiting from these attributes, Ni–Al 0.33 O x presented superior catalytic activity and stability, which achieved 93.2% yield of n-heptadecane at 250 °C and was able to reuse at least 4 times. Therefore, the as-prepared Ni–Al 0.33 O x is a promising Ni-based catalyst for alkanes production via in-situ HDO of fatty acids at mild conditions.

Abstract:A simple Pd‐loaded Nb 2 O 5 /SiO 2 catalyst was prepared for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass‐related compounds to alkanes under mild conditions. Niobium oxide dispersed in silica (Nb 2 O 5 /SiO 2 ) as the support was prepared by the sol–gel method and characterized by various techniques, including N 2 adsorption, XRD, NH 3 temperature‐programmed desorption (TPD), TEM, and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDAX) atomic mapping. The characterization results showed that the niobium oxide species were amorphous and well dispersed in silica. Compared to commercial Nb 2 O 5 , Nb 2 O 5 /SiO 2 has significantly more active niobium oxide species exposed on the surface. Under mild conditions (170 °C, 2.5 MPa), Pd/10 %Nb 2 O 5 /SiO 2 was effective for the hydrodeoxygenation reactions of 4‐(2‐furyl)‐3‐buten‐2‐one (aldol adduct of furfural with acetone), palmitic acid, tristearin, and diphenyl ether (model compounds of microalgae oils, vegetable oils, and lignin), which gave high yields (>94 %) of alkanes with little CC bond cleavage. More importantly, owing to the significant promotion effect of NbO x species on CO bond cleavage and the mild reaction conditions, the CC cleavage was considerably restrained, and the catalyst showed an excellent activity and stability for the hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid with almost no decrease in hexadecane yield (94–95 %) in a 150 h time‐on‐stream test.

Abstract:The sustainable development of energy has always been a concern. Upgrading biomass catalysis into hydrocarbon liquid fuels is one of the effective methods. In order to upgrade biomass derivative guaiacol by Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) catalysis, this article report a three‐dimensional honeycomb structure biochar loaded with Ni nanoparticles and phosphomolybdic acid demonstrating excellent catalytic performance in a short period of time. This is due to the porous structure of biochar, which allows Ni metal nanoparticles to be highly uniformly dispersed on the support, which enhances the catalytic hydrogenation of guaiacol in terms of both rate and efficiency. Furthermore, it was observed that the added phosphomolybdic acid dissolved within the temperature range of 78‐90°C, functioning as a homogeneous catalyst in the process. This proves advantageous, as the phosphomolybdic acid becomes accessible at any location within the porous Ni/C catalyst. The detailed characterization data revealed that the carbon support prepared in this study has a high specific surface area of up to 1375.61 m2/g. Additionally, the phosphomolybdic acid exhibited rich acidity, with Brønsted and Lewis acid contents of 2.55 μmol/g and 21.45 μmol/g, respectively. Reaction data demonstrated that at 240°C for 180 minutes, 100% conversion and 97.9% cyclohexane selectivity were achieved.

Abstract:The need to explore a sustainable manner to produce hydrocarbon-like biofuel has attracted tremendous interest. A series of bimetallic catalysts comprised of Fe and Ni with different Ni loadings supported on hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) were synthesized for the production of hydrocarbon-like biofuel via deoxygenation (DO) reaction without the use of external hydrogen. The bimetallic 10Fe40Ni/HMS catalyst possesses a high conversion (96.1%) and selectivity towards C8-C20 hydrocarbon (91.8%) during the DO reaction. This is because the finely dispersed Fe and Ni consisting of NiO and NiFe2O4 demonstrate strong acidity along with higher amount of Brönsted-Lewis acid properties. The DO reaction of triglycerides with bimetallic Fe and Ni supported on HMS is a sustainable process to produce hydrocarbon biofuel.

Abstract:Ni/HZSM-5 catalysts with different Ni loadings were prepared by impregnation method, and their catalytic performance was evaluated in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) upgrading of the model reactant methyl hexadecanoate (MHD) to liquid alkane fuels. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, NH3-TPD, and BET. Ni loadings were obviously influenced by the acidity, and thus significantly affected their catalytic performance. Over 7wt.% Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst, MHD conversion of more than 90% and total liquid C5–C16 hydrocarbon selectivity of 83% were obtained under the optimum reaction condition, possibly due to the synergistic effect of metal Ni and acid HZSM-5.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of vegetable oils to renewable alkane-type biofuels has attracted more and more concern in recent years. However, the presently used catalysts were mainly focused on the sulfided CoMo and NiMo catalysts, which inevitably posed sulfur contamination in final products. Therefore, exploring nonsulfured catalyst for this processing is of fundamental importance, but it is still an open challenge. In this paper, we prepared the sulfur free Ni supported on SiO2, γ-Al2O3, SAPO-11, HZSM-5, and HY by incipient wetness impregnation and tested the catalytic performance in HDO of methyl palmitate. Alkanes with long carbon chains were mainly produced with two possibly parallel approaches: hydrogenation of hexadecanal to hexadecanol, followed by dehydration/hydrogenation to C16 alkane and decarbonylaton/decarboxylation of hexadecanoic acid to C15 alkane. The acidity of catalysts significantly influenced their catalytic performance, and the Ni/SAPO-11 catalysts with weak and medium acidity showed superior properties to the other catalysts due to the synergistic effect of metal Ni and acidic support. The maximum yield of 93% for C15+ alkanes was observed over 7 wt % Ni/SAPO-11 under the mild reaction conditions of 493 K and 2 MPa, indicating its promising application in this reaction.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), a vital fuel precursor and solvent, is crucial for biomass refining. Herein, we report highly selective and stable PdNi nanoalloy catalysts for this deep hydrogenation process. A CO2-assisted green method was developed for the controllable synthesis of various bimetallic and monometallic catalysts. The PdNi/SBA-15 catalysts with various Pd/Ni ratios exhibited a volcano-like trend between BHMTHF yield and Pd/Ni ratio. Among all catalysts tested, Pd2Ni1/SBA-15 achieved the best performance, converting 99.0% of HMF to BHMTHF with 96.0% selectivity, surpassing previously reported catalysts. Additionally, the Pd2Ni1/SBA-15 catalyst maintained excellent stability even after five recycling runs. Catalyst characterizations (e.g., HAADF-STEM) and DFT calculations confirmed the successful formation of the alloy structure with electron transfer between Ni and Pd, which accounts for the remarkable performance and stability of the catalyst. This work paves the way for developing highly selective and stable alloy catalysts for biomass valorization.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the effective methods to upgrade biomass pyrolysis oil, but the development of a low-cost, high-performance HDO catalyst still faces enormous challenges. In this work, a facile and eco-friendly approach is developed to synthesize the Ni2 HZSM-5 catalyst. Structure and acidity of the catalyst can be controlled by simply adjusting the proportions of ammonia solution and the silicon to aluminum ratio, which are closely related to the performance of the catalyst. Experimental results reveal that the Ni2 HZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 85 under NH3·H2O/Ni = 14 exhibits the highest activity of 98% guaiacol conversion, along with a 78.8% yield of cyclohexane (reaction conditions: 300 °C, 3 MPa H2). In addition, the guaiacol reaction network is provided.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oils to value-added biofuels is of great importance to efficient utilization of renewable biomass. Precisely tailoring the surface microenvironment of supported metal nanocatalysts plays a significant role in regulating the interaction between reactants and catalytic active sites and facilitates the acquiring of high-performance HDO catalysts for lignin upgrading. Herein, we report a step-economic synthesis of N-doped hollow carbon sphere encapsulated with Co nanoreactors (, X: 700-1000) via the template-directed in-situ crystallization of Co-based ZIF-67 (zeolite imidazolate framework) and pyrolysis process. The optimized nanocatalyst presented a 100% conversion and 96% selectivity towards valuable 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) biofuel through HDO of bio-oils-based vanillin. Such excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the specific structure properties and surface microenvironment of nanocatalysts. It was demonstrated that the electronic interaction between embedded Co nanoparticles and surface nitrogen species of NHCS nanoreactors constructed desired microenvironment and generated abundant surface Co active species, which could effectively enhance activation capabilities of reactants and intermediate, and achieve highly selective HDO of vanillin to MMP via promoted adsorptions of CO/CO bonds as confirmed by intrinsic kinetic evaluations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, a two-step of hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis tandem reaction pathway of vanillin HDO to MMP and the corresponding catalytic reaction mechanism were proposed. Besides, the hierarchical porous structure of NHCS facilitated the dispersion and stabilization of encapsulated Co nanoparticles and endowed nanocatalyst with good stability in recycling tests. This work provided new insights into rational design of efficient and stable metal nanocatalysts for biomass conversion.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation is of prime importance in the valorization of biomass-based feedstocks to produce essential chemicals and fuels. To carry out this process in a more cost-effective and sustainable manner, the use of 3D-metal-based nanostructured catalysts is highly desired. Here, we report the preparation and application of Ni nanoparticles supported on ZSM-5 (the Si/Al ratio is 80) as a general and efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalyst. These Ni-based nanoparticles catalyze the selective hydrodeoxygenation of a wide range of funcational substrates, including ketones, ethers, and phenols, and also reduce aromatic rings to produce (cyclo) alkanes. Notably, the hydrodeoxygenation of fatty acid derived ketones to long-chain alkanes, lignin derived molecules, and polyether ether ketone decomposition compounds to cyclohexane-based products highlight the versatility of this novel Ni catalyst.

Ni nanoparticle coupled surface oxygen vacancies for efficient synergistic conversion of palmitic acid into alkanes

Abstract:The catalytic transformation of renewable biomass oil (mainly comprising fatty acids and triglycerides) into high-value alkanes is a versatile technique, and Ni-based catalysts are considered to be the most suitable substitutes for precious metals. Ni nanoparticles supported on CeO 2 carriers, prepared by hydrothermal synthesis (Ni/H-CeO 2 ) with abundant oxygen vacancies, exhibited superior catalytic activity compared to precious metal catalysts. For the hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid, the Ni/H-CeO 2 catalyst converted palmitic acid into pentadecane with a 94.8% selectivity under mild reaction conditions. The outstanding catalytic performance of Ni/H-CeO 2 can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the Ni nanoparticles for activating hydrogen and the abundant oxygen vacancies for adsorbing oxygen from palmitic acid. The abundant oxygen vacancies of Ni/H-CeO 2 improved the interaction between the Ni metal and CeO 2 support, as confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Therefore, the abundant oxygen vacancies were more conducive to the dispersion of Ni, resulting in the formation of Ni nanoparticles, which enhanced the potential for hydrogen activation due to the increased number of exposed Ni and electronic effects. The high pentadecane selectivity was governed by small Ni nanoparticles. This study provides a novel strategy to obtain an efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalyst for converting biomass oil into biofuel. Graphical Ni/H-CeO 2 exhibits more excellent catalytic activity than Ni/C-CeO 2 due to the synergistic effect between the small Ni nanoparticles and the rich oxygen vacancy (O V ), and Ni nanoparticle size was successfully regulated by the O V concentration of CeO 2 carriers. Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derivatives is a promising way for preparation of valuable chemicals and biofuels. Herein, we report the preparation of a N/O co-doped carbon material catalyst loaded with Pd/Ni alloy (Pd 1 Ni 5 @CTBA-800-H 2 O 2 ) by in-situ pyrolysis reduction with hyper-crosslinked polymers as precursors. The obtained Pd 1 Ni 5 @CTBA-800-H 2 O 2 was investigated by N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy and so on. N/O co-doping can efficiently produce defects on the surface of carbon framework, which acted as active sites and facilitated the immobilization of metal nanoparticles as well as their dispersion in the liquid phase. Subsequent treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) further improves wetting and hydrophilic properties of the carbon material. Thus, the Pd 1 Ni 5 @CTBA-800-H 2 O 2 catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity and recycling performance for hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin (VL) to produce 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under the condition of 150 °C and 4 MPa H 2 and water as a green solvent.

Abstract:NiFe bimetallic catalyst shows an excellent activity and selectivity for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of three typical model compounds of bio-oil. The conversion of furfuryl alcohol, benzene alcohol and ethyl oenanthate is 100, 95.48 and 97.89% at 400°C and the yield to 2-methylfuran, toluene and heptane is 98.85, 93.49 and 96.11% at 0.1ml/min flow speed and atmospheric pressure. It indicates that the major reaction pathway is the cleavage of C–O rather than C–C. After the catalytic HDO of bio-oil over NiFe/Al2O3 catalyst, the heating value changes from 37.8 to 43.9MJ/kg, the pH changes from 6.65 to 7.50.
