Abstract:Noble metal catalyst has an outstanding catalytic activity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, but its high cost limits large-scale application. Herein, we put forward a novel photochemical method to prepare the highly dispersed Pt/TiO2 catalyst with a low metal loading. And it presented an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 95.1% selectivity at 280 degrees C under 1 MPa H-2 atmosphere. Characterization results revealed that the high Pt dispersion was the critical factor for the high catalytic activity. And the photochemical method preferred to achieve high metal dispersion due to the room temperature condition. Other typical phenolic monomers and dimers were able to transform into hydrocarbons with most yield above 80%, wherein not only the deoxygenation step, but also the cleavage of ether bonds can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. Hydrocarbon content increased to 33.80% from 11.33%. Alkylphenols content increased to 51.38% from 27.86%. These two products can be used as value-added fuels and chemicals, respectively. Guaiacols and syringols were completely converted into alkylphenols and hydrocarbon. The amount of other oxygenated compounds also decreased significantly. This simple and active catalytic system is potential to apply widely for the upgrade of raw bio-oil.
Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolics to cycloalkanes over Ni-Co alloy coupled with oxophilic NbOx

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil is a promising route to produce advanced biofuels. How-ever, the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups with high bond strength in bio-oil challenges the development of efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts. In this study, a series of bifunctional catalysts were synthesized by coupling Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support, which was used for the HDO of lignin -derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes. The Ni-Co alloy formed on the bimetallic catalysts during calcina-tion and reduction was verified by TEM, XPS, and H2-TPR measurements, which showed excellent hydro-genolysis activity. The composition of the Ni-Co alloy was the most uniform with a Ni/Co molar ratio of 1, and the catalyst achieved the highest catalytic activity. The oxygen vacancies provided by the NbOx support also enhanced the adsorption of phenolics and promoted the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups by forming a specific configuration. The synergistic catalysis of Ni-Co alloy and oxygen vacancies achieved com-plete conversion of guaiacol with a high cycloalkane selectivity of 98.9 % under optimal conditions (300 degrees C, 3 MPa H2, and 2 h). More importantly, only marginal deactivation occurred on the 5Ni-5Co/NbOx catalyst after 5 cycles and it was also successfully applied to the efficient conversion of other complex lignin-derived phenolics. Therefore, an efficient and economical strategy of coupling the Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support to catalyze the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes was prospective.
Hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol as a model compound of pyrolysis lignin-oil over NiCo bimetallic catalyst: Reactivity and kinetic study

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a popular route to upgrade the pyrolysis lignin-oil that is abundant of phenolic compounds, and the synergistic effect of bimetal enables to improve the catalytic activity significantly. In this work, a series of non-noble metal catalysts are synthesized and their HDO performances of guaiacol are compared. Optimized NiCo/SiO2-ZrO2 catalyst expresses a 100% conversion and a 99.9% selectivity of cyclohexane product, which is higher than those over Ni/SiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. Catalyst characterization results demonstrate that the interaction between Ni and Co promotes the reduction of metal site and the adsorption of hydrogen, which is the crucial factor during HDO process. Besides, the electron transfer from Co to Ni species weakens the C-O bond of substrate intermediate and results in its cleavage to transform cyclohexanol to cyclohexane. This is also the rate determining step in the HDO of guaiacol. Specific kinetic study is conducted to verify the reaction pathway and the structure–activity relationship. The HDO reaction of guaiacol on NiCo/SiO2-ZrO2 fits the first order kinetic model well. The apparent Ea of 55.9 kJ·mol−1 is lower than those of the noble metal catalysts reported in previous studies. In addition, the upgrading of raw pyrolysis lignin-oil on this non-noble bimetallic catalyst also achieves a high HDO efficiency, with the hydrocarbon contents increased from 4.2% to 60.6%. The good HDO performance of this cheap and easy-prepared NiCo catalyst proves its promising potential in the upgrading of lignin-oil for the production of hydrocarbon fuels.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a critical technique for upgrading biomass derivatives to deoxygenated fuels or other high-value compounds. Phenol, guaiacol, anisole, p-cresol, m-cresol and vanillin are all monomeric phenolics produced from lignin. Guaiacol is often utilised as a model lignin compound to deduce mechanistic information about the bio-oil upgrading process. Typically, a source of H2 is supplied as reactant for the HDO reaction. However, the H2 supply, due to the high cost of production and additional safety precautions needed for storage and transportation, imposes significant economic infeasibilities on the HDO process's scaling up. We investigated a novel H2-free hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of guaiacol at low temperatures and pressures, using water as both a reaction medium and hydrogen source. A variety of Ni catalysts supported on zirconia/ graphene/with/without nitrogen doping were synthesised and evaluated at 250 degrees C and 300 degrees C in a batch reactor, with the goal of performing a multi-step tandem reaction including water splitting followed by HDO. The catalysts were characterised using H2-TPR, XRD, TEM and XPS to better understand the physicochemical properties and their correlation with catalytic performance of the samples in the HDO process. Indeed, our NiZr2O/Gr-n present the best activity/selectivity balance and it is deemed as a promising catalyst to conduct the H2-free HDO reaction. The catalyst reached commendable conversion levels and selectivity to mono-oxygenated compounds considering the very challenging reaction conditions. This innovative HDO approach provides a new avenue for cost-effective biomass upgrading.

Abstract:Lignin is an attractive renewable source of aromatics with a low effective hydrogen to carbon ratio (H/Ceff). The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived model compounds is a key strategy for lignin upgrading. In this work, the HDO of guaiacol, a typical lignin-derived compound, was carried out over metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived Ni-based catalysts. A monometallic Ni-MOF catalyst and different ratios of bimetallic NiMo-MOF catalysts were synthesized by a hydrothermal process, followed by a carbonization process. Among these catalysts, Ni3Mo1@C exhibited an excellent catalytic performance, affording a guaiacol conversion of 98.8% and a cyclohexanol selectivity of 66.8% at 240 °C and 2 MPa H2 for 4 h. The addition of Mo decreased the particle size of the spherical structure and improved the dispersion of metal particles. The synergistic effect between Ni and Mo was confirmed by various means, including ICP, XRD, SEM, TEM, and NH3-TPD analyses. In addition, the effect of the reaction temperature, time, and H2 pressure during the HDO process is discussed in detail.

Abstract:Bio-oils derived from the pyrolysis of lignin-based biomass often contain a variety of oxygenated compounds, which can compromise their usefulness as a fuel. To improve the quality of bio-oil, catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a crucial step that removes oxygen from the oil in the form of water. In this study, we showed that MFI nanosheets are excellent supports for Ru-catalysts. We synthesized highly crystalline MFI nanosheets using a simple hydrothermal seeding procedure; the final material was obtained in 56 h of crystallization. We investigated the activity of Ru supported on different materials. Our findings indicated that Ru supported on hierarchical MFI demonstrated excellent activity in HDO of guaiacol. Our results demonstrated that Ru/ZNS-56 achieved nearly 100% selectivity towards cyclohexane under mild conditions (200 °C, 50 bar H2, 1 h).

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic compounds is a promising strategy for bio-oil upgradation to produce high-value chemicals and fuels. Herein, a series of NiFeAlO x catalysts prepared by a co-precipitation method were applied in HDO of guaiacol as a typical model compound. The characterization results revealed that the catalyst with Ni/Fe/Al ratio of 3/0.5/2.5 possessed developed textural properties, small metal particles, abundant oxygen vacancies and acid sites. HDO of guaiacol occurred in two pathways with different hydrogen sources : the direct hydrogenation of benzene ring to 2-methoxycyclohexanone and the further hydrogenolysis and dehydration of intermediates to cyclohexane at 260 °C in n -hexane under H 2 for 6 h, while demethoxylation affording phenol followed by hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol at 220 °C in isopropanol under N 2 for 2 h. The different product composition results from the type of reactive H species, where active hydrogen species are hydrogen radicals using H 2 as the hydrogen source and hydrogen ions with opposite charges using isopropanol as the H-donor solvent, respectively. The Ni 3 Fe 0.5 Al 2.5 O x catalyst maintained good performance after five recycle experiments with a slight decrease in the conversion of guaiacol. Moreover, the catalyst showed excellent universality for selective HDO of other phenolic compounds to cycloalkanes or cycloalkanols.

Abstract:The bio-oils derived from fast pyrolysis of lignin contain large amount of phenolic components. Due to its high oxygen content, it cannot be used directly as traffic liquid fuels. Currently, hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective method for upgrading bio-oil to produce high-quality liquid fuels. However, catalysts have a key role in the selective hydrogenolysis of oxygen-containing groups (e.g. -OCH3). In this study, the mixed supported nickel-based catalyst Ni@HZSM-5-γ-Al2O3 was successfully prepared by the impregnation method. The influence of the temperature, pressure, hydrogen flow rate and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) on the HDO activity was investigated. Under the optimized conditions (350 °C, 15 bar, 350 mL/min H2, 1 h−1), the conversion of guaiacol reached 98.73%, and the product liquid yields and hydrocarbon contents were 39.82% and 86.85%, respectively. In particular, the contents of aromatics and alkanes were 49.60% and 37.25%, respectively. Based on catalyst evaluation and characterization, the mechanism of guaiacol HDO was explored. Demethylation, direct deoxygenation, hydrogenation, hydrolysis, transalkylation and condensation reactions were considered as the main pathways.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil offers a promising route for the production of advanced biofuels. However, the conventional HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil faces serious problems, such as low hydrocarbon yield and easy deactivation of catalysts. Herein, a novel reaction system consisting of a highly stable bifunctional catalyst (i.e., Ni-WOx/NiAl2O4) and a dodecane solvent was developed for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics. The Ni-0 species, derived from NiWO4 precursors on the NiAl2O4, were of small crystallite size and high dispersion, together with the strong oxophilicity of W, thereby exhibiting high activity. The use of a highly stable NiAl2O4 spinel support and the replacement of common solid acid with more stable WOx for the cleavage of C-O bond accounted for excellent stability. The optimized 10Ni-15WO(x)/NiAl2O4 exhibited a high guaiacol conversion of 97.8% with a high cycloalkane yield of 83.8% under the optimum conditions (250 degrees C, 5 MPa H-2, and 4 h). Cycloalkanes with a high yield over 90% were also obtained by the HDO of other complex lignin-derived compounds. More importantly, the catalyst always retained its initial activity for the HDO of guaiacol in five runs, with negligible coke formation. Subsequently, the HDO behavior of the bio-oil obtained from walnut shell pyrolysis was also studied. The relative content of cycloalkanes in the products reached 44.3% after the reaction. This study highlights the prospect of a highly stable catalyst consisting of hydrogenation metal and oxophilic promoter, and dodecane solvent to enable efficient production of cycloalkanes from the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation is one of the key steps to upgrade of biomass derived bio-oil into valuable biofuels and chemicals. Developing of highly reactive and cost-effective catalysts for bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation is highly desired. Layered NixCoyAlz catalyst was prepared using layered double hydroxide (LDH) as the precursors. The optimized Ni1Co3Al2-600 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation. Guaiacol could completely converted with 90.0% of cyclohexanol selectivity under relatively mild reaction conditions. The XRD and HRTEM characterizations of the as prepared catalysts confirmed the formation of Ni-Co alloy and the XPS analysis revealed the strong interaction between Al species with both Ni and Co in catalyst Ni1Co3Al2-600, which should contribute to its high catalytic activity for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation. Catalyst Ni1Co3Al2-600 also demonstrated excellent versatility for the hydrodeoxygenation reactions of guaiacyl and syringyl compounds as well as high stability. The results from this work could provide a new approach for the constructing of effective catalysts from non-noble metal LDHs.

Abstract:The sustainable development of energy has always been a concern. Upgrading biomass catalysis into hydrocarbon liquid fuels is one of the effective methods. In order to upgrade biomass derivative guaiacol by Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) catalysis, this article report a three‐dimensional honeycomb structure biochar loaded with Ni nanoparticles and phosphomolybdic acid demonstrating excellent catalytic performance in a short period of time. This is due to the porous structure of biochar, which allows Ni metal nanoparticles to be highly uniformly dispersed on the support, which enhances the catalytic hydrogenation of guaiacol in terms of both rate and efficiency. Furthermore, it was observed that the added phosphomolybdic acid dissolved within the temperature range of 78‐90°C, functioning as a homogeneous catalyst in the process. This proves advantageous, as the phosphomolybdic acid becomes accessible at any location within the porous Ni/C catalyst. The detailed characterization data revealed that the carbon support prepared in this study has a high specific surface area of up to 1375.61 m2/g. Additionally, the phosphomolybdic acid exhibited rich acidity, with Brønsted and Lewis acid contents of 2.55 μmol/g and 21.45 μmol/g, respectively. Reaction data demonstrated that at 240°C for 180 minutes, 100% conversion and 97.9% cyclohexane selectivity were achieved.

Abstract:Pulping black liquor is a serious source of water pollution worldwide, which is very difficult to subsequently treat. Lignin is the main component of the black liquor and is the only natural aromatic recyclable resource, which is burnt as waste in the Kraft pulping industry. Designing an efficient lignin conversion catalyst that suitable for the strong alkaline environment of black liquor harbors tremendous carbon-neutral potential but still remains a scientific and technological challenge. In this work, the strong alkaline environment of black liquor was simulated, and low-cost pretreated Ni/AC catalysts were adopted to the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of a lignin model (guaiacol), and a breakthrough was achieved in the efficient transformation of lignin compound into hydrocarbons. By multitechniques, (e.g., FT-IR, XPS, Boehm titration, HRTEM), the relevance between introducing functional acid groups and the surface properties of catalysts was revealed. It is found that the increased acidic groups are responsible for the enhanced C(sp2)-O cleavage reactions, while improving the dispersion of Ni NPs and thus enhance the HDO efficiency. It is worth noting that better selectivity of benzene and lower hydrogen consumption are achieved on Ni/NOAC during the HDO process. Furthermore, the reaction routes of guaiacol on catalysts with different functional acid groups were proposed. This work provides guidance for efficient utilization of lignin in waste black liquor, and is of great significance to the development of sustainable carbon-neutral biorefinery and environmental protection.

Abstract:The primary aim of this study is to break down the methoxy (-OCH 3 ) and hydroxyl(-OH) oxygenates present in lignin, a component of biomass. This degradation was performed on a lignin-derived model compound, guaiacol, using a highly effective Ni-loaded SBA-15 catalyst. SBA-15 was synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and varying amounts of NiO (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 wt%) were incorporated into SBA-15 through wet impregnation. The catalysts were characterized by using techniques such as XRD, DRS-UV, FT-IR, TPR, BET, SEM, and HR-TEM. Their catalytic performance was evaluated through the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol in a vapor phase reactor under controlled atmospheric pressure conditions. Notably, at 200 °C with a hydrogen flow rate of 50 ml/h, the 10 wt% NiO/SBA-15 catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic activity, achieving high guaiacol conversion and aimed product selectivity.

Abstract:We report a continuous selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process of guaiacol conversion to cycloalkanes under 180 °C/1 MPa, which results in improved HDO chemistry for lignin-based jet fuel production. The incipient wetness impregnation method was modified to prepare an HY zeolite-supported Ru catalyst with better metal dispersion and acid site uniformity, which overcomes the low conversion and selectivity of previous literature. The modified catalyst (Ru-HY-60-MI) was tested in a continuous fixed bed reactor, resulting in increased HDO conversion of guaiacol to cycloalkanes compared to the unmodified catalyst. Pressure, temperature, and weight hourly space velocity-dependent tests validate guaiacol HDO over Ru-HY-60-MI catalyzed ring hydrogenation of guaiacol to 2-methoxycyclohexanol, acid-catalyzed demethoxylation and dehydration to cyclohexene, and further hydrogenation of cyclohexene to cyclohexane. These experiments enable exploring a continuous HDO process, demonstrate effectiveness for other β-β and α-O-4 lignin representatives and real lignin bio-oil, and pave the way towards commercialization of lignin-based jet fuel.

In this work, a facile and eco-friendly approach is developed to synthesize the Ni2 HZSM-5 catalyst. Structure and acidity of the catalyst can be controlled by simply adjusting the proportions of ammonia solution and the silicon to aluminum ratio, which are closely related to the performance of the catalyst. Experimental results reveal that the Ni2 HZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 85 under NH3·H2O/Ni = 14 exhibits the highest activity of 98% guaiacol conversion, along with a 78.8% yield of cyclohexane (reaction conditions: 300 °C, 3 MPa H2). Abstract:Cyclohexanol is an important chemical intermediate. In recent years, guaiacol has received widespread attention as a lignin model compound for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) to prepare cyclohexanol. However, it remains a major challenge to prepare a highly active and stable catalyst. In this work, a series of carbon-encapsulated Co-based catalysts with different Co/C ratios were synthesized using an extremely simple approach for the HDO of guaiacol to cyclohexanol. Among them, the Co1@C1 catalyst (with a ratio of 1:1 between glucose and cobalt nitrate) showed the best catalytic activity, achieving almost complete directional conversion of guaiacol to cyclohexanol within 60 min at 200 °C, with a yield of up to 98.5 % for cyclohexanol. In addition, the catalyst also exhibited extremely high stability, and no significant deactivation was observed after 5 cycles under optimal conditions. The research outcomes point out that highly dispersed CoO NPs are the main active centers. The graphite layer ensures the stability of the Cox@Cy catalyst, and effectively avoids the leaching of metals in high-temperature reactions. This work provides important reference for the development of high activity, high stability, and low-cost catalysts for the hydrogenation of phenolic derivatives in the future.

Abstract:Transformation of lignin-derived feedstocks into valuable hydrocarbons is of significant importance but still challenging. This work investigates the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin compound guaiacol on Pt-based catalysts with improved surface hydrophobicity and metal dispersion for the first time. The efficiency of guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation into hydrocarbons over Nb 2 O 5 -modified Pt-based catalyst reaches 51 %, nearly doubling that over unmodified Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst (25 %). On the one hand, Nb 2 O 5 causes the decrease of hydroxyl groups on catalyst, leading to the enhanced hydrophobicity of catalysts, which increases the reaction rate of guaiacol into hydrocarbons on unit of Pt metal sites. On the other hand, Nb 2 O 5 strengthens the metal-support interaction, which minimizes the size of Pt nanoparticles, providing more exposed metal sites, thus leading to a higher hydrocarbons yield on catalyst. However, excess introduction of Nb 2 O 5 leads to partial coverage of Pt metal sites, resulting in decreased yield of hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the routes of guaiacol HDO reaction over modified Pt-based catalysts are investigated. This work further illustrates the influence of catalyst surface properties on the HDO process of lignin compound, and thereby provides a promising approach for adjustment of catalyst surface properties in order to promote water-liberated reactions.

Notably, complete conversion of guaiacol was achieved, yielding a 99.6% hydro-carbon over the robust Cu(6)Zn(3)Al(1) catalyst under the conditions of 4 MPa H2, 300 degrees C, and 8 h with a catalyst/guaiacol ratio of 0.5 g/1.0 g. In-depth catalyst characterizations unveiled the presence of oxygen va-cancies within the ZnO surface layer, acting as pivotal active sites that facilitated the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol. Furthermore, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed to evaluate several po-tential active sites, revealing that the oxygen vacancy of ZnO on the Cu surface played a crucial role. This va-cancy enhanced the adsorption of intermediate cyclohexanol and markedly reduced the energy barrier for the rate-limiting step. This comprehensive investigation sheds light on the catalytic pathway and offers insights into designing efficient and sustainable biofuel production processes.
