Abstract:We present a nanoscopic evolution process of nucleation-extension of cracks of samples with different orientations in two-dimensional lattice by using the phase field crystal, and study the mechanism of the effect of the dislocation configuration of the nanocrack on brittle-ductile transition behavior. Results show that the angle between the direction of the external applied strain and the lattice orientation has a significant effect on the crack initiation and propagation. For some angles, the crack exhibits cleavage extension, while for other angles it exhibits ductile extension. As the orientation angle changing, the ductile to brittle or brittle to ductile transition behavior occurs. From the perspective of the dislocation configuration, it is found that during the crack ductile propagation the emission of the dislocation from the crack tip occurs, and the plastic deformation zone also appears with a string of nanoscale holes. For the initiation and extension of the brittle crack, due to the different configuration structures of dislocations, three ways of the cleavage extension are observed. We can calculate the critical stress intensity factor of the cleavage extension and ductile extension of the crack by using the diatomic spring model of the crack tip, and get that the stress intensity factor of the ductile expansion is smaller than that of the brittle extension. The mixed stress intensity factor as the phenomenological criterion can be used to judging the Brittle-ductile behavior for different orientation angles. The angle between the direction of the action of the stress and the orientation of the crystal lattice has significant influence on the ductile and brittle expansion of the crack in the crystal materials.
