Abstract:The copper species doped into manganese oxides have a positive influence on the catalytic performance. In this paper, Cu-doped Mn3O4nanoparticles and Cu-doped Mn2O3hollow nanospheres were controllably synthesized through a one-step facile, green solvothermal strategy and characterized by XRD, BET-BJH, TEM, FE-SEM, EDS, Raman, XPS and TPR analyses. The formation of Cu-doped Mn3O4and Cu-doped Mn2O3phases can be ingeniously controlled by adjusting H2O2content and the mechanism of crystal growth was studied based on time-dependent experiments. The catalytic CO oxidation results showed that the temperature corresponding to 50% of the CO conversion (T50) was about 162 °C and 223 °C for Cu-doped Mn2O3 and Cu-doped Mn3O4, which was 63 °C and 22 °C lower than pure Mn2O3and Mn3O4, demonstrating that the Cu-doped MnOxnanoparticles exhibit enhanced catalytic capacity for CO oxidation. Also, the stability and reusability of Cu-doped MnOxwere investigated and the results indicate high reusability and stability of the catalyst.

Abstract:The CO oxidation catalytic activity of catalysts is strongly influenced by the oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs) concentration and the valence state of active metal. Herein, a defect engineering approach was implemented to enhance the oxygen vacancy defects and to modify the valence of metal ions in manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2) by the introduction of copper (Cu). The characterization and theoretical calculation results reveal that the incorporation of Cu 2+ ion into the OMS-2 structure led to a rise in specific surface area and pore volume, weakening of Mn-O bonds, higher proportion of the low-coordinated oxygen species adsorbed in oxygen vacancies (O ads ) and an increase in the average oxidation state of manganese. These structural modifications were discovered to considerably reduce the apparent activation energy (Ea), thus ultimately significantly enhancing the CO oxidation activity (T 99 at 148 °Cat GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ) than the original OMS-2 (T 99 = 215 °C at GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ). Furthermore, In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) and In-situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in situ NAP-XPS) results indicate that the bimetallic synergy enhanced by doping strategy accelerates the conversion of oxygen to chemisorbed oxygen species and the reaction rate of CO oxidation through Mn 3+ +Cu 2+ ↔Mn 4+ +Cu + redox cycle. The findings of this study offer novel perspectives on the design of catalysts with exceptional performance in CO oxidation.

Abstract:Doping other metals such as Mn, Ni, In, et al. is known as an effective strategy to improve the environmental catalytic performance of Co 3 O 4 . In our works, Mn ions were successfully incorporated into the lattice of Co 3 O 4 via the oxalic acid synchronous complexation method. The Mn ions preferentially occupy octahedrally coordinated Co 3+ sites and constructing the Mn-O-Co structure. In addition, theoretical calculation further verified that the enhanced catalytic performance of Co5Mn1 originated from highly reactive lattice oxygen coordinated with both Mn and Co ions. Significantly, Mn ions transfer more electrons to lattice oxygen. This oxygen sites have the lower oxygen vacancy formation energy (E Ov = 1.94 eV), allowing the lattice oxygen to participate in the reaction following the MvK mechanism in the high temperature range. Collectively, this work is helpful to understand the mechanism of effect of Mn ion doping on the physical and chemical properties of Co-based catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Doping engineering is an effective strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity of manganese oxides by enhancing their poor electrical conductivity and oxygen adsorption capacity. Herein, p‐block aluminum group metal ions (Al 3+ , Ga 3+ , and In 3+ ) are introduced into cryptomelane‐type manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS‐2), leading to p−d orbital hybridization between the p‐orbitals of the aluminum group metals and d‐orbitals of Mn, facilitating the oxygen reduction reaction. The aluminum group metal‐doped OMS‐2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity, rapid reaction kinetics, and favorable stability compared to commercial Pt/C. Among the three prepared catalysts, Ga‐doped OMS‐2 (Ga‐OMS‐2) has stronger oxygen reduction activity. Experimental and theoretical calculations show that the superiority of Ga‐OMS‐2 is attributed to p−d hybridization, which enriches the reaction sites and enhances the binding strength of the catalyst to the O 2 reaction intermediates. As a proof of concept, Zinc−air batteries assembled with Ga‐OMS‐2 as a catalyst exhibit superior power density and cycle life to commercial Pt/C. This p−d hybridization strategy gives insight into the p‐block metal doping of catalysts prepared with other transition metals with excellent electrocatalytic activity and durability for energy storage and conversion.

A Doping Element Improving the Properties of Catalysis: In Situ Raman Spectroscopy Insight into Mn-doped NiMn Layered Double Hydroxide for Urea Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:Elemental doping has been proved to be an efficient means to adjust the performance of Ni-based hydroxides for the electrochemical urea oxidation reaction. However, the mechanism by which elemental doping affects the catalytic activity of such bimetallic catalysts remains unclear and lack of evidence. Herein, we dope Ni(OH)2 with Mn, a typical dopant, show that Mn doping reduces the onset potential of Ni hydroxide oxidation, which favors the generation of electrochemically active NiIIIOOH, and increases the electrochemical reversibility of the Ni redox pair in NiMn layered double hydroxides. In situ Raman spectroscopy analysis provides direct spectroscopic evidence that Mn promotes the production of high-valence NiIIIOOH, specifically from ca. 0.4 V vs. Hg/HgO for Ni(OH)2 to ca. 0.3 V vs. Hg/HgO for Ni0.2Mn0.8 LDHs, i.e., a negative shift of 100 mV. The Raman spectroscopy results also reveal that Mn doping elongates the Ni−O bond in NiOOH and leads to increased phase structure disorder. Consequently, the UOR performance of Ni1-xMnx LDH surpasses that of Ni(OH)2. This study provides important information and clear mechanistic explanation for the crucial roles of dopants in bimetallic electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-doped MnO2 has been successfully synthesized via chemical precipitation method. Interestingly, doping can increase not only ion conductivity but also intrinsic electron conductivity. By doping, the particle size of MnO2 decreases, relatively appropriate pore size distribution is obtained, and physically and chemically bound water content increases, all of which contribute to ion conductivity. Meanwhile, doping has induced some defects in MnO2 crystal, increasing the hole concentration and then intrinsic electron conductivity. As the result, metal-doped MnO2 displays better rate performance than the un–doped. Especially, nickel-doped MnO2 exhibits the best rate behavior. Even at 8 A g-1, nickel-doped MnO2 still has a specific capacitance as high as 234.0 F g-1, larger than that of the un-doped obtained at 1 A g-1 (only 173.6 F g-1). In conclusion, doping is a useful way for improving the rate performance of MnO2.

Abstract:Identification of the catalytic active site is critical in the design and development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts. Many high-precision experimental techniques, as well as computational methods, have been developed to address this problem, but identifying the active site for composite oxide catalysts remains a challenging task because of their complexity and indiscernible microstructures. Herein, we provide a key new insight into the active site within a composite oxide catalyst by investigating an iron-based oxide catalyst with complex components. The dopant atoms with octahedral coordination located at substitution sites in the Fe2O3 lattice tune the electronic structure of the adjacent iron atoms, which act as the active sites that lead to enhanced catalytic activity. This atomic-scale doping is different from the emerging single-atom catalyst concept, in which the single atom on the support is the active site, and which provides an alternative methodology of improving the activity of heterogeneous catalysts with maximized heteroatom efficiency.

Abstract:Element doping is one of the most efficient strategies to boost the stability and performance of LiNiO2-based materials, to obtain a thorough understanding of the role of element doping. Particularly, the synergistic effect of the co-doped elements will be crucial for the design of the materials. Herein, we synthesize a series of Mg incorporated LiNiO2 with a fixed Mn-doping content to better understand the synergistic effect of Mg co -doping. It is demonstrated that the incorporation of the Mg2+ ions in the Li slabs leads to suppression of the Li+/Ni2+ mixing and decreases the crystal lattice volume change during lithiation/delithiation processes. Therefore, the electrochemical stability of the material can be further enhanced, in addition to the stabilization effect of Mn-doping. The capacity retention of LiNiO(2 )doped with 4 mol% Mn and 0.3 mol% Mg (LiNi(0.957)Mn(0.04)Mg(0.003)O2) is 88.26 % after 200 cycles at 0.5C. This is also highlighted by the improved capacity retention at 4.6 V upper cutoff voltage. Moreover, due to the "pillar effect " of the co-doped Mg2+ ions in the Li slabs, the material exhibits superior rate capability. The findings may be beneficial for the development of Co-free nickel-rich materials for the lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Various metal cations M (M = Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Fe3+) were doped into the tunnel of manganese octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2). Redox-inactive metal (Ca, Mg and Zn) doped OMS-2 exhibited better peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalytic activity than redox metal-doped Cu-OMS-2 and Fe-OMS-2. Redox-inactive metals doping improves the conductivity and reducibility of the catalyst, while transition metal doping reduces the dispersion of manganese. More importantly, the degradation of ACE can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, ACE was oxidized dominantly through mediated electron transfer process. Subsequently, singlet oxygen (1O2) gradually dominated oxidative degradation in the second stage, which was derived from the reaction between superoxide radical (O2•-) and metastable manganese intermediates. The long half-life of O2•- on the surface of OMS-2 ensured the delay generation of 1O2. This study not only provides a new idea for improving the efficiency of heterogeneous catalysts activation of PMS, but also meaningful for the in-depth study of multiple reaction mechanisms in PMS activation processes.

Abstract:Controlling the electronic structure of the active centre through ion doping modulation has been widely recognized as an effective means to enhance catalytic activity, particularly for MnO 2 -based catalysts. However, existing models fail to fully elucidate the underlying mechanism behind this phenomenon. Here, we utilizes the quenching route to synthesize a variety of MnO 2 -based catalysts (named as Co-MnO 2 -Q) with different Co content, aiming to investigate the catalytic mechanism of MnO 2 in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and establish a correlation between its electronic structure and catalytic activity. Notably, the optimal catalyst (Co-MnO 2 -Q3) exhibited a rate constant (k obs ) for Levofloxacin (LEVO) removal up to 0.105 min −1 , which is eight times higher than that of pure MnO 2 (0.013 min −1 ). Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) investigations have demonstrated that the adsorption of PMS on the constructed catalyst models is an exothermic process, which occurs spontaneously and effectively elongates the O–O bond. Meanwhile, DFT calculations reveal a positive correlation between Co-doped catalyst activity and upward shift of Mn 3d and O 2p band centres. Essentially, Co doping enhances the covalency of Mn–O bonds and increases electron density levels near the Fermi energy, thereby facilitating electron transfer from Mn sites to adsorbed PMS molecules and accelerating both PMS activation and catalytic degradation reactions. This study successfully establishes a descriptor that effectively characterizes the intrinsic activity enhancement of MnO 2 -based catalysts, providing valuable guidance for designing more advanced catalytic systems based on MnO 2 .

Abstract:Metal-based monolithic catalysts offer significant advantages in heterogeneous catalysis attributed to their exceptional thermal conductivity and mechanical strength. However, controlling the loading of active components on metallic substrates remains a major challenge. Here, we synthesized a Mn-doped Cu mesh catalyst using a facile electrochemical method, allowing the active components to grow directly on Cu mesh without extra pretreatments or binding agents. The synthesized catalyst exhibits approximately a 30 % increase in carbon monoxide oxidation activity at 100 °C and a 60 % increase in toluene oxidation activity at 240 °C compared to the Mn-free Cu mesh catalyst. We found that calcination in inert gases enhances interactions between Cu and Mn species, leading to more oxygen vacancies and adsorption sites for reactants. This investigation paves the way for fabricating multi-metal monolithic catalysts on metallic substrates.

Abstract:The incorporation of Cu cation in CoS2 lattice can regulate the electronic structure of CoS2 and modulate the charge distribution between its surface and Li–O species, resulting in a weaker binding strength toward Li–O species and a lower reaction barrier of the rate‐determining step, improving the catalytic performance in Li–O2 batteries. Introducing heteroatom into catalyst lattice to modulate its intrinsic electronic structure is an efficient strategy to improve the electrocatalytic performance in Li–O2 batteries. Herein, Cu‐doped CoS2 (Cu–CoS2) nanoparticles are fabricated by a solvothermal method and evaluated as promising cathode catalysts for Li–O2 batteries. Based on physicochemical analysis as well as density functional theory calculations, it is revealed that doping Cu heteroatom in CoS2 lattice can increase the covalency of the CoS bond with more electron transfer from Co 3d to S 3p orbitals, thereby resulting in less electron transfer from Co 3d to O 2p orbitals of Li–O species, which can weaken the adsorption strength toward Li–O intermediates, decrease the reaction barrier, and thus improve the catalytic performance in Li–O2 batteries. As a result, the battery using Cu–CoS2 nanoparticles in the cathode exhibits superior kinetics, reversibility, capacity, and cycling performance, as compared to the battery based on CoS2 catalyst. This work provides an atomic‐level insight into the rational design of transition‐metal dichalcogenide catalysts via regulating the electronic structure for high‐performance Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:A copper-doped manganese tetroxide (Cu-Mn3O4) composites were prepared for zinc-ion batteries cathode material through a facile synthesis route. The Cu-Mn3O4 is constructed by numerous irregular nanoparticles with a porous micro/nano structure. The Microscopic observation reveals that the Cu2+ embedded in the lattice of manganese oxide by partly substituting Mn3+. Strikingly, at current densities of 100 mA g-1, the Cu-Mn3O4 electrode delivered a higher discharge capacity of 250 mAh g-1 compared with 150 mAh g-1 for the pure Mn3O4 electrode and the coulombic efficiency is almost 100%. The great enhancement of the electrochemical zinc storage performance can be attributed to the improvement of the electronic/ionic conductivity and zinc diffusivity of electrodes. The present results evidence that metal doping can improve the electronic/ionic conductivity of Mn3O4, which may also applicable to other metal oxides.

Abstract:Manganese oxide has been recognized as one of the most promising gaseous heterogeneous catalysts due to its low cost, environmental friendliness, and high catalytic oxidation performance. The modulation of the interfacial coupling effect of manganese oxides by chemical means is considered a critical and effective way to improve the catalytic performance. Herein, a novel one-step synthetic strategy of highly-efficient ultrathin manganese-based catalysts is proposed through optimal regulation of metal/manganese oxide multi-interfacial coupling. Carbon monoxide (CO) and propane (C 3 H 8 ) oxidation are employed as probe reactions to investigate the structure-catalytic mechanism - catalytic performance relationship. The ultrathin manganese (Mn)-based catalyst exhibits superior low-temperature catalytic activity with a 90% conversion of CO/C 3 H 8 realized at 106°C and 350°C. Subsequently, the effect of "interfacial effect" on intrinsic properties of manganese oxides is revealed. The ultrathin appearance of two–dimensional (2D) manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets changes the binding force in the vertical direction, thus resulting in an increase in the average manganese-oxygen (Mn-O) bond length and exposing more surface defects. Besides, the introduction of Copper (Cu) species into the catalyst further weakens the Mn-O bond and promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, which subsequently enhances the oxygen migration rate. This study provides new insights into the optimal design of transition metal oxide interfacial assemblies for efficient catalytic reactions.

Atomically Dispersed High-Active Site Density Copper Electrocatalyst for the Reduction of Oxygen

Abstract:Enlarging the M-Nx active-site density is an effective route to enhance the ORR performance of M-N-C catalysts. In this work, a single-atom catalyst Cu–N@Cu–N–C with enlarged Cu–N4 active site density was prepared by the second doping and pyrolysis (SDP) of Cu–N–C derived from Cu-doped zeolite imidazole frameworks. The half-wave potentials of Cu–N@Cu–N–C were measured as 0.85 V in alkaline electrolyte and 0.75 V in acidic media, which was 50 mV and 60 mV higher than that of Cu–N–C, respectively. N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm curves and corresponding pore distribution analysis were used to verify the successful filling of additional Cu and N in micropores of Cu–N–C after SDP. The obvious increase in Cu contents for Cu–N@Cu–N–C (1.92 wt%) compared with Cu–N–C (0.88 wt%) tested by ICP demonstrated the successful doping of Cu into Cu–N–C. XAFS analysis confirmed the presence of Cu–N4 single-atom active centers in Cu–N@Cu–N–C. The N 1 s high-resolution XPS results proved a great increase in Cu–N4 contents from 13.15% for Cu–N–C to 18.36% for Cu–N@Cu–N–C. The enhanced ORR performance of Cu–N@Cu–N–C was attributed to the enlargement of Cu–N4 active site density, providing an effective route for the preparation of efficient and low-cost ORR catalysts.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed M-N-C has been considered an effective catalyst for various electrochemical reactions such as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which faces the challenge of increasing metal load while simultaneously maintaining catalytic performance. Herein, we put forward a strategy for boosting catalytic performances of a single Cu atom coordinated with three N atoms (CuN) for both ORR and OER by increasing the density of connected CuN moieties. Our calculations first show that a single CuN moiety exhibiting no catalytic performance for ORR and OER can be activated by increasing the density of metal centers, which weakens the binding affinity to *OH due to the lowered d-band center of the metal atoms. These findings stimulate the further theoretical design of a two-dimensional compound of CNCu with a high concentration of homogeneously distributed CuN moieties serving as bifunctional active sites, which demonstrates efficient catalytic performance for both ORR and OER as reflected by the overpotentials of 0.71 and 0.43 V, respectively. This work opens a new avenue for designing effective single-atom catalysts with potential applications as energy storage and conversion devices possessing high density of metal centers independent of the doping strategy and defect engineering, which deserves experimental investigation in the future.

Abstract:Electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is an environmentally benign and sustainable approach for NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions, which needs efficient electrocatalyst to meet the enormous challenge of activating the inert N2 molecule. Recently, TiO2 emerges as an active NRR electrocatalyst with advantages of abundance, nontoxicity, and high thermal stability. Heteroatom doping is an effective oxygen vacancy introduction strategy to manufacture unique electron and structure properties of metal oxides, which will greatly influence the catalysts' activity. In this work, we developed Mn-doped TiO2 nanospheres (Mn-TiO2) for electrochemical NRR. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, Mn-TiO2 shows a large NH3 yield rate of 20.05 μg h–1 mgcat.–1 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.93%, which are much higher than undoped TiO2.
