Abstract:Photodetectors are critical components for various electronic applications. Compared with traditional photodetectors based on inorganic materials, organic photodetectors have received an increasing amount of attention because of the features of tunable energy levels, solution-preparation, and flexibility. Owing to higher exciton binding energy and smaller carrier mobility, it is impossible to obtain photomultiplication type organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) directly using the same working mechanism of avalanche photodiodes or photomultiplier tubes. This review details the latest strategies for realizing the photomultiplication phenomenon in organic photodetectors including doping to introduce traps, acceptor materials as traps, and the introduction of interfacial blocking layers. Afterwards, we detail the tuning strategies of the response spectra range of the PM-OPDs for different application scenarios.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) possess bright prospects in applications of medical imaging and wearable electronics due to the advantages such as low cost, good biocompatibility, and good flexibility. Photomultiplication OPDs (PM-OPDs) enabled by the trap-assisted carrier tunneling injection effect exhibit external quantum efficiencies far greater than unity, thus the acquired responsivities are extremely high. However, the reported PM-OPDs with high responsivity performances are all accompanied by high dark currents due to the introduction of carrier traps, which inevitably results in inferior detectivities. In this work, we modify a P3HT:PCBM donor-rich PM-OPD by introducing an atomically thin Al2O3 interfacial layer through the ALD technique, obtaining a high responsivity of 8294 A/W and high detectivity of 6.76*10^14 Jones, simultaneously, both of which are among the highest reported for bulk heterojunction PM-OPDs. Ascribed to the introduction of the atomically thin Al2O3 layer, the metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) tunneling junction is formed, which brings forward a suppressed dark current along with an increased amounts of holes tunneling under forward bias. Meanwhile, the weak light detection limit of the modified PM-OPD within the linear response range reaches the level of nW/cm2. Based on the proposed PM-OPD, a proof-of-concept image sensor with 26*26 pixels is demonstrated, which can respond to both ultraviolet light and visible light. The PM-OPD based sensor arrays can find broad applications for medical imaging, wearable electronics, etc.

Abstract:Highly responsive organic photodetectors allow a plethora of applications in fields like imaging, health, security monitoring, etc. Photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) are a desirable option due to their internal amplification mechanism. However, for such devices, significant gain and low dark currents are often mutually excluded since large operation voltages often induce high shot noise. Here, a fully vacuum-processed PM-OPD is demonstrated using trap-assisted electron injection in BDP-OMe:C60 material system. By applying only -1 V, compared with the self-powered working condition, the responsivity is increased by one order of magnitude, resulting in an outstanding specific detectivity of ≈1013 Jones. Remarkably, the superior detectivity in the near-infrared region is stable and almost voltage-independent up to -10 V. Compared with two photovoltaic-type photodetectors, these PM-OPDs exhibit the great potential to be easily integrated with state-of-the-art readout electronics in terms of their high responsivity, fast response speed, and bias-independent specific detectivity. The employed vacuum fabrication process and the easy-to-adapt PM-OPD concept enable seamless upscaling of production, paving the way to a commercially relevant photodetector technology.

Abstract:Photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) have been stimulating more and more researchers' interest owing to their extremely high external quantum efficiency (EQE). To prepare high-performance PM-OPDs with a broadband spectral response range from visible to near-infrared and investigate the role of energy levels of the donor and acceptor on its responsiveness, the non-fullerene acceptor Y6 was added into the P3HT:PC71BM system in this work. The photomultiplication phenomenon with the highest EQE has been achieved under both forward and reverse bias when the ratio of Y6 in two acceptors approaches 80 wt. %. The introduction of Y6 not only promotes the formation of moderate hole traps in the active layer but also results in an appropriate amount of low injection barriers to allow more electron injection from the external circuit. Therefore, the spectral response of the device with 80 wt. % Y6 has been broadened from 750 to 950 nm, and the champion EQE of 15 691% at 10 V and 7639% at −20 V at 850 nm was achieved. This work reveals the importance of hole-trapping ability determined by the energy level difference between the donor and the acceptor for the selection of the multiplication system and provides a scheme for the design of high-performance broadband PM-OPDs.

Abstract:A high efficiency near-infrared (NIR) photomultiplication-type organic photodetector (PM-OPD) has been achieved by combining the energetic disorder and trap-assisted charge tunneling injection. The performance of the prepared NIR PM-OPD with simple structure was significantly improved, and the external quantum efficiency and specific detectivity (D*) reached 5675% and 5.0 x 10(11) Jones, respectively. Furthermore, the high-performance NIR PM-OPD also showed application in human heart rate detection.

Abstract:Ultra-narrow-band NIR photomultiplication organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) were realized in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/active layers/Al based on an interfacial-trap-induced charge injection narrowing (CIN) concept. The rather less Bod Ethex-Hex (BEH) is imbedded in a polymer donor matrix to form large amounts of isolated electron traps. Trapped electrons in BEH close to an Al electrode will enforce hole-tunneling injection induced by interfacial band bending, resulting in a photomultiplication phenomenon. PM-OPDs with P3HT:BEH as the active layer exhibit a narrow response peak at 850 nm with a full-width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 27 nm as well as a rather weak response from 650 to 800 nm. The EQE of 29 700% at 850 nm was achieved in PM-OPDs by incorporating 0.02 wt % of F(6)TCNNQ under -13 V of applied voltage. The rejection ratio (RR) of the optimized PM-OPDs with F(6)TCNNQ is 11 for EQE(850 nm)/EQE(700 nm) and 10 for EQE(850 nm)/EQE(750 nm), respectively. An EQE of 15 300% at 850 nm was achieved in the ternary PM-OPDs under -13 V of applied voltage, with markedly enhanced RRs of 44 for EQE(850 nm)/EQE(700 nm) and 30 for EQE(850 nm)/EQE(750 nm).

Abstract:Filterless narrowband response organic photo detectors (OPDs) present a great challenge due to the broad absorption range of organic semiconducting materials. The reported narrowband response OPDs also suffer from low external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the desired response window and low rejection ratio. Here, we report highly narrowband photomultiplication (PM) type OPDs based on P3HT:PC71BM (100:1, wt/wt) as active layer without an optical filter. The full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of the PM-type OPDs can be well retained less than 30 nm under different biases. Meanwhile, the champion EQE and rejection ratio approach 53 500% and 2020 at -60 V bias, respectively. The small fwhm should be attributed to the sharp absorption edge of active layer with small amount of PC71BM. The PM phenomenon is attributed to hole tunneling injection from the external circuit assisted by trapped electron in PC71BM near the Al electrode under light illumination. These highly narrowband PM-type OPDs should have great potential applications in sensitively detecting specific wavelength light and be blind to light outside of the desired response window.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) are promising for light detection, sensing, imaging, and flexible wearable applications due to their advantages, including tunable spectral response, excellent flexibility, and large-area solution processability. However, traditional OPDs often suffer from low photocurrents and external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) below 100 %, making them susceptible to noise signal interference. A promising solution to this limitation is the development of photomultiplication-type OPDs (PMOPDs), which can self-amplify photocurrents under illumination and applied bias without the need for an external amplification circuit. This function enables PMOPDs to achieve EQEs far exceeding 100 %, demonstrating significant potential for academic research and industrial applications. Here, this review comprehensively discusses the fundamentals and latest advancements in high-performance PMOPDs. It starts with a description of device structures, working principles, and key performance parameters of PMOPDs. Then, significant strategies of designing photosensitive active layers (including binary, multicomponent, and stacked structures) and electrode interface layers, as well as their effects on the performance of PMOPDs are discussed in detail. The effectiveness of these strategies in enhancing EQEs, reducing dark currents, and optimizing spectral responses of PMOPDs is systematically summarized. Moreover, applications of PMOPDs in various fields such as weak light detection, single-pixel imaging, flexible wearable electronics and health monitoring are further discussed. Finally, the concluding remarks and perspectives on the development of PMOPDs are presented, along with insights into future opportunities and challenges in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:Photomultiplication type organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) have attracted enormous interests owing to the high sensitivity on weak light, especially for excellent parasitic stability with single-polymer as active layers. Herein, three kinds of polymers DCP1-3 were synthesized with different content of PC61BM pendant as intramolecular trap, which were successfully applied into high stability PM-OPDs. Photogenerated electrons will be trapped in the suspended PC61BM in the polymers to induce interfacial band bending for hole tunneling injection, and the injected hole can be efficiently transported along the channels of polymer under bias. The thickness of ultrathin PFN-Br interfacial layer was optimized to decrease the dark current density. A 19100% of EQE at 365 nm was obtained for DCP3 based PM-OPDs with PFN-Br as interfacial layer under 20 V bias. The optimized PM-OPDs exhibit excellent stability without photocurrent decay after 70 days storage in nitrogen-filled glove box, which is beneficial from the locked donor and acceptor segment through covalent linker in the polymer. The optimized PM-OPDs can be employed to measure the heart rate (HR) of human with different pulsatile conditions, indicating the promising application prospect of the PM-OPDs with single-polymer as active layers.

Abstract:The broadband organic photodetectors (OPDs) with photomultiplication (PM) phenomenon are fabricated by using Y6 doped with rather less PBDB-T as active layers having electron-only transport characteristic. The PM-OPDs with PBDB-T:Y6 (3:100, wt/wt) as active layers exhibit the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18,000% at 350 nm and 15,000% at 870 nm under 1 V bias. The PM-OPDs exhibits a broad spectral response range from 320 to 950 nm, which is mainly determined by the trapped hole distribution near Al electrode. The working mechanism of PM-OPDs should be attributed to interfacial trap-assisted electron tunneling injection, which can be further confirmed from the EQE spectral shape of PM-OPDs with different active layer thickness. The n-type polymer PZ1 was selected as interfacial layer to be inserted between PEDOT:PSS and active layers, which makes PM-OPDs with PZ1 interfacial layer work well under forward and reverse bias. This work may provide a smart strategy to achieve broadband PM-OPDs by adjusting the distribution of trapped charge near electrode.

Abstract:Broadband photomultiplier organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) have tremendous potential for use in a variety of photoimaging, physical health monitoring, and wearable applications. However, the interfacial mismatch between electrodes and organic semiconductors inhibits the long-term working stability and reliability of devices. Here, we devised high-performance and stability PM-OPDs by using Zn2+-chelated ethoxylated-polyethylenimine (denoted as PEIE-Zn) as an electron tunneling injection dipole layer between ITO and P3HT:PC71BM: Y6 (3:20:80) broadband photoactive layer. The specific detectivity of the PEIE-Zn-modified PM-OPDs was higher than 1012 Jones in the whole spectral response range (350-1000 nm) under 10V bias. The external quantum efficiency of the device exceeded 1000 % in the whole spectral response range under -20V bias. The transient photoresponse curve of the device has no obvious peaks and fluctuations, and the photocurrent density drops only 2.34 % and 0.25 % at 10 V and -20 V bias after illumination, respectively. The device exhibited very good stability over the course of a week, with its photocurrent density maintained at more than 98.94 % of the initial photocurrent density in the ambient environment without encapsulation. This work improves interface contact by modifying the ITO electrode with PEIE-Zn, providing a practical design solution for devices with high response and stability for broadband PM-OPDs.

Abstract:Photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors have emerged as a class of next generation solution-processed photodetectors with high gain. Despite this promising feature, the reported photodectors still suffer from relatively large dark currents at high bias voltages. To overcome this drawback, a mechanistic understanding of the photomultiplication effect in organic photodiodes is required. In this work, we advanced the performance of photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors by tuning the active layer composition and interfacial layers. The optimized devices exhibit small dark currents and flat dark current–voltage curves under the reverse bias condition up to −10 V. The optimized photodetectors also reached an ultra-high responsivity of 23.6 A/W and the specific detectivity of 1.04 × 10 12 Jones at −10 V. More importantly, we investigated the photomultiplication process with multiple transient techniques and revealed that the photoconductive gain effect is a slow process, which relies on the photo-Schottky effect enabled by charge carrier tunneling and the accumulation of holes. Furthermore, we also demonstrated prototypical pulsed-light detection based on the optimized devices, which showed great potential for real applications.

Abstract:Photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs) offer signal amplification, ideal for faint light detection and simplified systems, but typically face slow response speeds and high dark currents. In contrast, photovoltaic-type OPDs (PV-OPDs) provide fast response and high detectivity (D*) but have limited photoresponse. This study introduces a non-fullerene acceptor, BFDO-4F, into the active layer to create trap states for photogenerated electron capture. The resulting device exhibits dual-mode characteristics and is bias-switchable between PV and PM-modes. It achieves a high D* of 1.92×10¹² Jones and fast response times of 2.83/4.43 µs in PV-mode, and exceptional EQEs up to 3484% in PM-mode. Notably, an on-chip self-powered module featuring PV-mode pixels driving a PM-mode pixel is demonstrated, yielding a photocurrent approximately five times higher than the reference device. This approach establishes a new framework for developing multifunctional, bias-switchable, dual-mode on-chip OPDs, unlocking diverse opportunities in highly integrated advanced sensing applications.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have shown attractive prospects in the fields of biological probes, chemical sensing, optoelectronic systems and stimuli responses. Here, we have successfully fabricated photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors based on an AIE material by designing a device structure. The high photoconductive gain was attributed to the interfacial trap-assisted hole-tunneling injection caused by MoO3 as the trap for electrons. The fabricated AIE-based photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors exhibited the figures of merits of high external quantum efficiency in excess of 60 000%, responsivity of 172 A W-1, detectivity of 3.08 x 10(12) Jones, and photoresponse with a rise time of 1.69 ms. Moreover, the devices also showed good stability with a half-life of 700 hours at continuous testing under ambient conditions, which makes them one of the most stable OPDs reported so far. The results demonstrate that AIE molecules are an excellent kind of photodetective material.
