Abstract: We investigate the collapsing geometry of hyperk\"ahler 4-manifolds. As applications we prove two well-known conjectures in the field. (1) Any collapsed limit of unit-diameter hyperk\"ahler metrics on the K3 manifold is isometric to one of the following: the quotient of a flat 3-torus by an involution, a singular special K\"ahler metric on the 2-sphere, or the unit interval. (2) Any complete hyperk\"ahler 4-manifold with finite energy (i.e., gravitational instanton) is asymptotic to a model end at infinity.

Abstract:We consider the Kähler-Ricci flow on compact Kähler manifolds with semiample canonical bundle and intermediate Kodaira dimension, and show that the flow collapses to a canonical metric on the base of the Iitaka fibration in the locally smooth topology and with bounded Ricci curvature away from the singular fibers. This follows from an asymptotic expansion for the evolving metrics, in the spirit of recent work of the first and third-named authors on collapsing Calabi-Yau metrics, and proves two conjectures of Song and Tian.

Abstract:We study the collapsing of Calabi-Yau metrics and of Kahler-Ricci flows on fiber spaces where the base is smooth. We identify the collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the Kahler-Ricci flow when the divisorial part of the discriminant locus has simple normal crossings. In either setting, we also obtain an explicit bound for the real codimension 2 Hausdorff measure of the Cheeger-Colding singular set, and identify a sufficient condition from birational geometry to understand the metric behavior of the limiting metric on the base.

Abstract:We exhibit families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on K3 surfaces which collapse to an interval, with Tian-Yau and Taub-NUT metrics occurring as bubbles. There is a corresponding continuous surjective map from the K3 surface to the interval, with regular fibers diffeomorphic to either 3-tori or Heisenberg nilmanifolds.

Abstract:These are the notes for lectures given at the Sanya winter school in complex analysis and geometry in January 2016. In Sec. 1, we review the meaning of Ricci curvature of Kähler metrics and introduce the problem of finding Kähler–Einstein metrics. In Sec. 2, we describe the formal picture that leads to the notion of K-stability of Fano manifolds, which is an algebro-geometric criterion for the existence of a Kähler–Einstein metric, by the recent result of Chen–Donaldson–Sun. In Sec. 3, we discuss algebraic structure on Gromov–Hausdorff limits, which is a key ingredient in the proof of the Kähler–Einstein result. In Sec. 4, we give a brief survey of the more recent work on tangent cones of singular Kähler–Einstein metrics arising from Gromov–Hausdorff limits, and the connections with algebraic geometry.

Abstract:In this paper we study collapsing sequences M_{i}-> X of Riemannian manifolds with curvature bounded or bounded away from a controlled subset. We introduce a structure over X which in an appropriate sense is dual to the N-structure of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov. As opposed to the N-structure, which live over the M_{i} themselves, this structure lives over X and allows for a convenient notion of global convergence as well as the appropriate background structure for doing analysis on X. This structure is new even in the case of uniformly bounded curvature and as an application we give a generalization of Gromov's Almost Flat Theorem and prove new Ricci pinching theorems which extend those known in the noncollapsed setting. There are also interesting topological consequences to the structure.

Abstract:We investigate the Kahler-Ricci flow on holomorphic fiber spaces whose generic fiber is a Calabi-Yau manifold. We establish uniform metric convergence to a metric on the base, away from the singular fibers, and show that the rescaled metrics on the fibers converge to Ricci-flat Kahler metrics. This strengthens previous work of Song-Tian and others. We obtain analogous results for degenerations of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, we make progress on understanding the collapsing behavior of Calabi-Yau metrics on a degenerating family of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. In the case of a family of smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective space degenerating into the transversal union of two smooth Fano hypersurfaces in a generic way, we obtain a complete result in all dimensions establishing explicit and precise relationships between the metric collapsing and complex structure degenerations. This result is new even in complex dimension two. This is achieved via gluing and singular perturbation techniques, and a key geometric ingredient involving the construction of certain (not necessarily smooth) Kähler metrics with torus symmetry. We also discuss possible extensions of this result to more general settings.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov-Hausdorff compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein Del Pezzo surfaces in each degree agrees with certain algebro-geometric compactification. In particular, this recovers Tian's theorem on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on smooth Del Pezzo surfaces and classifies the degenerations of such metrics. The proof is based on a combination of both algebraic and differential geometric techniques.

Abstract:It is conjectured by Song-Tian that the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds with semi-ample canonical line bundle is uniformly smooth away from the singular fibers. In this work, we adapt the method in the work of Hein-Tosatti on collapsing Calabi-Yau metrics and obtain a uniform spatial Holder estimate along the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow for all time away from the singular fiber.

Abstract:We investigate the Chern–Ricci flow, an evolution equation of Hermitian metrics generalizing the Kähler–Ricci flow, on elliptic bundles over a Riemann surface of genus greater than one. We show that, starting at any Gauduchon metric, the flow collapses the elliptic fibers and the metrics converge to the pullback of a Kähler–Einstein metric from the base. Some of our estimates are new even for the Kähler–Ricci flow. A consequence of our result is that, on every minimal non-Kähler surface of Kodaira dimension one, the Chern–Ricci flow converges in the sense of Gromov–Hausdorff to an orbifold Kähler–Einstein metric on a Riemann surface.

Abstract:The existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on a compact Kähler manifold hasbeen the subject of intensive study over the last few decades, following Yau'ssolution to Calabi's conjecture. The Ricci flow, introduced by Richard Hamiltonhas become one of the most powerful tools in geometric analysis. We study the Kähler-Ricci flow on minimal surfaces of Kodaira dimension oneand show that the flow collapses and converges to a unique canonical metric onits canonical model. Such a canonical is a generalized Kähler-Einsteinmetric. Combining the results of Cao, Tsuji, Tian and Zhang, we give a metricclassification for Käher surfaces with a numerical effective canonical linebundle by the Kähler-Ricci flow. In general, we propose a program of findingcanonical metrics on canonical models of projective varieties of positiveKodaira dimension.

Abstract:We showed that a sequence of ALH*-gravitational instantons from pairs consisting of a weak del Pezzo surface and a smooth anti-canonical divisor towards a large complex structure limit introduced by Collins, Jacobs and the first author collapsing to a punctured plane with a special Kahler metric, which can be viewed as a non-compact version of the collapsing result of Gross-Wilson. We provide a partial compactification of the moduli space of pointed ALH*-gravitational instantons with respect to the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology and locally is a polyhedron complex.
