Abstract:Developing facial synthetic routes for fabrication of multimetallic nanocatalysts with open porous morphology, tunable composition and tailored crystalline structure is a big challenge for fabrication of low-cost electrocatalysts. Here we report on the synthesis of single-crystalline dendritic bimetallic and multimetallic nanocubes via a solvothermal co-reduction method. These cubes show highly porous, complex 3D inner connections but single-crystalline structure. Tuning the reduction kinetics of metal precursors and introducing galvanic reaction at the active sites during growth were believed to be the keys for the formation of such unique nanostructure. Electro-catalytic oxygen reduction (ORR) and methanol oxidation (MOR) on these catalysts showed dramatic enhancements for both cathodic and anodic electrocatalysis in fuel cells, which were attributed to their unique morphology and crystalline structure, as well as synergetic effect of the multi-metallic components. This work uncovers the formation mechanism of such complex single-crystalline dendritic multimetallic nanocrystals and offers a promising synthetic strategy for geometric and crystalline control of multimetallic nanocrystals with tailored physical and chemical properties, which will benefit the development of clean energy.

Abstract:The crystal plane of ceria plays an essential role in determining its catalytic oxidation properties. In this study, single-crystalline CeO2 nanorods with well-defined crystal planes have been synthesized by a facile solution-based hydrothermal method. HRTEM studies reveal that the predominantly exposed planes are the unusually reactive {001} and {110} in the CeO2 nanorods rather than the stable {111} in the irregular nanoparticles. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the CeO2 nanorods are more reactive for CO oxidation than their counterparts, irregular nanoparticles. The present results indicate that catalysts with well-defined reactive sites may be “designed” because of the recent development of morphology-controlled synthesis of nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanocrystals with various morphologies (nanocubes and nanorods with different particle sizes) were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process. The crystal plane effects of different Fe2O3 nanomaterials on the catalytic activity of CO oxidation were investigated. Besides the BET area of catalyst, the predominantly exposed planes have a significant influence on the catalytic activity for CO oxidation. Fe2O3 nanorods with more reactive crystal planes {110}, which have relative higher density of Fe atoms, showed a higher activity than the other samples.

Abstract:Abstract We present a one‐pot colloidal synthesis method for producing monodisperse multi‐metal (Co, Mn, and Fe) spinel nanocrystals (NCs), including nanocubes, nano‐octahedra, and concave nanocubes. This study explores the mechanism of morphology control, showcasing the pivotal roles of metal precursors and capping ligands in determining the exposed crystal planes on the NC surface. The cubic spinel NCs, terminated with exclusive {100}‐facets, demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media compared to their octahedral and concave cubic counterparts. Specifically, at 0.85 V, (CoMn)Fe 2 O 4 spinel oxide nanocubes achieve a high mass activity of 23.9 A/g and exhibit excellent stability, highlighting the promising ORR performance associated with {100}‐facets of multi‐metal spinel oxides over other low‐index and high‐index facets. Motivated by exploring the correlation between ORR performance and surface atom arrangement (active sites), surface element composition, as well as other factors, this study introduces a prospective approach for shape‐controlled synthesis of advanced spinel oxide NCs. It underscores the significance of catalyst shape control and suggests potential applications as nonprecious metal ORR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:We have prepared well-defined supported nanocrystal catalysts using a thermal decomposition method. One - dimensional ZnO nanorods were used as crystalline seeds during nanocrystal nucleation and growth. The growth of nanocrystals with different components on the surface of ZnO nanorods was systematically controlled. Moreover, well-defined MnO/ZnO, Co3O4/ZnO, and Co3Mn1/ZnO catalysts were synthesized by a modified thermal decomposition approach. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X - ray powder diffraction (XRD) results showed that different nanocrystals were uniformly dispersed on the surface of as-synthesized ZnO nanorods. The Co3Mn1/ZnO catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance of CO oxidation compared to the MnO/ZnO and Co3O4/ZnO catalysts. The Co3Mn1/ZnO catalyst can easily catalyze CO oxidation at a lower temperature (50 degrees C) with sustainable durability. Moreover, the T-100 (the temperature when CO conversion reached 100%) of Co3Mn1/ZnO catalyst was 200 degrees C at gas hourly space velocity of 200 L center dot g(cat)(-1)center dot h(-1). The surface characterization of the different catalysts was performed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the Co3Mn1/ZnO catalyst had approximately 30% more oxygen vacancy compared to the MnO/ZnO catalyst, resulting in a higher catalytic activity of the CO oxidation reaction. More importantly, the Co3Mn1/ZnO catalyst had a much lower apparent activation barrier (39.4 kJ center dot mol(-1)) than the other supported nanocrystal catalysts.

Abstract:CeO2–ZrO2 mixed oxides with controlled morphologies (i.e., nanorod, nano-polyhedral and disordered shape) were synthesized through either hydrothermal or coprecipitation method, and the corresponding supported Pd/CeO2–ZrO2 catalysts were also prepared by conventional impregnation. The obtained catalysts were subjected to systematic structural/physio-chemical characterizations as well as three-way catalytic performance evaluations. The results showed that CeO2–ZrO2 mixed oxides presented different exposed crystal planes: namely disordered CZ-di mainly exposed (111) crystal planes, nanorod CZ-ro mainly exposed (111) crystal planes and few (100) crystal planes, while nano-polyhedral CZ-po exposed both (111) and (100) crystal planes. Clear structure-activity relationship could be demonstrated between the TWC (Three-way catalysts) performance of Pd/CeO2–ZrO2 and such different microstructures, as (100) and (111) crystal planes exposed by CZ-ro and CZ-po were beneficial for the surface oxygen vacancies formation, thus increasing the Pd-support interaction and effectively decreasing the light-off temperature of HC and NO elimination. On the other hand, the disordered CZ-di retained more lattice oxygen content, leading to better catalytic activity of CO elimination for the corresponding Pd/CZ-di catalyst.

Abstract:The methodology for controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals with a face-centered cubic(fcc)structure was summarized,illustrating the key parameters for the shape control in the synthesis.Taking the recent progress in our research group as an example,the facet control of metal nanocrystals was demonstrated.For instance,nanocrystals with various low-index facets can be rationally synthesized by selecting appropriate capping agents;the formation of high-index facets can be achieved on the surface of nanocrystals by activating specific sites for atomic addition.As various surface facets possess different atomic arrangements,they exhibit tunable properties in molecular adsorption and activation,which allow us to tailor their performance in catalysis.

Abstract:: Noble metals are widely used in many fields, particularly in catalysis, due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, their large-scale applications are limited, due to the high price, low reserves, easy agglomeration and the sintering of single component. The above problems can be effectively solved by constructing metal alloy nanocrystals and cerium oxide supported noble metal catalysts. In this review, we will summarize recent progress on the controlled synthesis and catalytic performances of noble metals/cerium oxide nanocatalysts. In detail, mainly based on our group’s work, we present the controlled synthetic approaches, the relationship between the structures and properties, and the catalytic applications of those catalysts with specific shapes and nanostructures. Finally, the future developments and challenges of the cutting-edge research on noble metal-based catalysts are prospected.

Abstract:Insights into the relationship between the crystal planes of metal oxides and the catalytic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are essential for developing efficient renewable energy technologies. Herein, spinel Co3O4 nanomaterials were synthesized controllably with the specified morphologies of nanocubes, nanosheets, and nanoplates with different exposed planes of {100}, {110}, and {111}, respectively. The effects of the crystal planes of Co3O4 on the activity for the OER, ORR, and HER were subsequently investigated in alkaline media. Different electrocatalytic performances are possibly attributed to the abundance ratios of Co3+/Co2+ over the different exposed planes. The surface Co3+ ions exhibit higher activity for the OER and HER, whereas the surface Co2+ ions exhibit better performance for the ORR; moreover, higher electroconductivity enhances the polarization current for ORR and HER except OER.

Abstract:Zeolites have many applications in the petrochemical and fine chemical industry and their functionalization does expand the spectrum of potentials. However, the integration of functional nanocrystals into zeolite frameworks with controlled size, dispersion, and crystallization behavior still remains a significant challenge. Here, a new synthesis of magnetic functioned ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts via a CoFe2O4 nanocrystal mediated crystallization strategy is reported. It is found that high crystallinity of CoFe2O4 nanocrystals results in a well-dispersed encapsulation of them into a single-crystal of ZSM-5 due to non-further-grown nanocrystals during the fast ZSM-5 growth. On the contrary, low crystallinity of CoFe2O4 nanocrystals leads to the polycrystalline zeolite growth due to the secondary growth of nanocrystals accompanied by the zeolite crystallization and large lattice mismatch between them. The successful encapsulation of small CoFe2O4 nanocrystals (approximate to 4 nm) into single crystals lies on the preattachment of them into solid silica gel. During the growth of ZSM-5 crystals, no secondary growth of nanocrystals happens and its motion is restricted. The encapsulation of magnetic CoFe2O4 nanocrystals not only endows magnetic function into zeolites for the first time, but also does not impact catalytic performance of ZSM-5 in acetalization of cyclohexanone with methanol, which is highly promising in catalytic industries.

Abstract:As a candidate for photocatalyst, the photocatalytic performance of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is severely restricted by its high charge carrier recombination rate, self-photocorrosion and the uncertainty of crystal plane. In order to improve the photocatalytic performance and deeply analyze the photocatalytic mechanism, the Cu 2 O nanocrystals with cubic, cuboctahedral and octahedral structures were combined with n-type ZnO to prepare Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction photocatalysts. The effects of crystal facet of Cu 2 O and Zn/Cu ratios on the photocatalytic performances of Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunctions were explored into. The results show that the cuboctahedron Cu 2 O with {100} and {111} facets exhibits more surprising catalytic performance due to the energy-level difference between the two facets, leading to higher electron–hole pair separation efficiency when compared with the octahedral Cu 2 O with {111} facets and cubic Cu 2 O with {100} facets. In addition, optimized Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction with appropriate Zn/Cu ratio exhibits the collaborative advantages of the two materials, so the catalytic activity and stability are effectively improved.

Abstract:Designing high-efficiency catalyst is at the heart of a transition to future renewable energy systems. Great achievements have been made to optimize thermodynamics to reduce energetic barriers of the catalytic reactions. However, little attention has been paid to design catalysts to improve kinetics to enrich the local concentration of reactant molecules surrounding electrocatalysts. Here, we find that well designed nanocatalysts with periodic structures can optimize kinetics to accelerate mass transport from bulk electrolyte to the catalyst surface, leading to the enhanced catalytic performance. This achievement stems from regulation of the surface reactant flux due to the gradient of the microelectric field directing uniformly to the nearest catalyst on ordered pattern, so that all of the reactant molecules are utilized sufficiently for reactions, enabling the boost of the electrocatalytic performance. This novel concept is further confirmed in various catalytic systems and nanoassemblies, such as nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanoflakes.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Recent progress in colloidal synthesis has realized the preparations of uniform nanocrystal (NC) model catalysts with rich and well‐controlled morphologies that were employed to explore structure‐activity relationships of powder catalysts, similar to single‐crystal‐based model catalysts under ultrahigh vacuum conditions but can work at same conditions as powder catalysts without the "materials gap" and "pressure gap". In this perspective, the CeO2‐based NC model catalysts with various morphologies are included and their relevant progresses are critically reviewed. The detailed descriptions of morphology‐controlled synthesis and characterizations of uniform CeO2 NCs, and morphology‐dependent catalysis of CeO2‐based NC model catalysts containing pure CeO2 NCs, CeO2‐supported oxide catalysts, and CeO2‐supported metal catalysts, provide us a comprehensive cognition in CeO2‐involved catalytic reactions and also open up a new approach for the fundamental studies of complex heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, a concept of oxide‐based NC model catalysts and outlook of oxide NCs acting not only as model catalysts for the fundamental study but also as the support in tailoring structures and optimizing performance of oxide‐involved catalysts are discussed. Abstract:ZnWO4 photocatalysts with various morphologies were synthesized by a hydrothermal process. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and time on the crystallinity and morphology of ZnWO4 catalyst were investigated. The crystallinity was enhanced with the increase of hydrothermal temperature and hydrothermal time. The formation of ZnWO4 nanoparticles was controlled via kinetic process above 160 degrees C, and ZnWO4 nanorods with a highly [100]preferred orientation formed via the thermodynamically control process in the temperature range of 120-140 degrees C. The morphology and crystallinity of ZnWO4 photocatalyst have a significant influence on the photocatalytic activity for aqueous Rhodamine B and gaseous formaldehyde degradation. ZnWO4 nanorod catalyst showed a much higher photocatalytic activity than the nanoparticle one. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the anisotropic structure of nanorod.

Abstract:The selective synthesis of nanomaterials with different morphologies and crystal facets is of great significance for catalytic properties and practical applications. Herein, we report a strategy for controllable fabrication of hierarchical Co3O4 materials with various morphologies (ellipsoidal, flower-like, book-shaped, spindle-like), and their catalytic properties in propane oxidation are studied. Co3O4-B (book-shaped) is found to exhibit the highest propane oxidation rate (0.86×10-8 mol m-2 s-1) and the highest turnover frequency (TOF=11.49×10−3 s-1) at 220 °C. It confirms that Co3O4-B provides a higher specific surface area, highly exposed {110} facet and abundant Co3+ cations, which make the catalyst exhibit favorable low-temperature reducibility and oxygen mobility, and thus improves the catalyst activity. In situ DRIFTS analysis reveals that the intermediates such as, carboxylate and carbonate species, are involved in propane oxidation. Furthermore, Co3O4-B shows great water-resistance performance, and no significant deactivation is observed after long-term stability and reusability tests.
