Abstract:CeO2–ZrO2 mixed oxides with controlled morphologies (i.e., nanorod, nano-polyhedral and disordered shape) were synthesized through either hydrothermal or coprecipitation method, and the corresponding supported Pd/CeO2–ZrO2 catalysts were also prepared by conventional impregnation. The obtained catalysts were subjected to systematic structural/physio-chemical characterizations as well as three-way catalytic performance evaluations. The results showed that CeO2–ZrO2 mixed oxides presented different exposed crystal planes: namely disordered CZ-di mainly exposed (111) crystal planes, nanorod CZ-ro mainly exposed (111) crystal planes and few (100) crystal planes, while nano-polyhedral CZ-po exposed both (111) and (100) crystal planes. Clear structure-activity relationship could be demonstrated between the TWC (Three-way catalysts) performance of Pd/CeO2–ZrO2 and such different microstructures, as (100) and (111) crystal planes exposed by CZ-ro and CZ-po were beneficial for the surface oxygen vacancies formation, thus increasing the Pd-support interaction and effectively decreasing the light-off temperature of HC and NO elimination. On the other hand, the disordered CZ-di retained more lattice oxygen content, leading to better catalytic activity of CO elimination for the corresponding Pd/CZ-di catalyst.

Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0-1) composite oxides were prepared by sol-gel method, and then they were used as supportpr tp prepare PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The effect of Ce/Zr atomic ratio on the structure of crystalline phase, redox property and TWC catalytic activity of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxides and PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were studied. The results show that phase structure of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxide depends on the CeO2 content. The different Ce/Zr atomic ratio affects the catalytic activity of PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts much. In the reaction of NO-CO and CO-O-2, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst is the highest. However, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is the highest in the reaction of CH4-O-2. The alpha: H-2-TPR peak is related probably to the NO-CO and CO-O-2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.
Strong Local Coordination Structure Effects on Subnanometer PtOx Clusters over CeO2 Nanowires Probed by Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:The CexZryO2(x=0~1, y=1-x) complex oxides was prepared by sol-gel method, and PdO/CexZryO2 catalysts was prepared with it as the carrier. The TWC properties were evaluated using NO-CO reaction and CO-CH4 oxidation reaction as model reaction, and the carrier and catalyst was characterized by XRD and H2-TPR method. Results shown, that the atomic ratio nx:ny had critical impact on the TWC properties of the carrier CexZryO2 and PdO catalyst, and CexZryO2 complex oxides with different nx:ny had different crystalline phase and reduction, and the PdO catalyst carried was different. The PR peak was relating probably to the NO - CO and CO - O2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Recent progress in colloidal synthesis has realized the preparations of uniform nanocrystal (NC) model catalysts with rich and well‐controlled morphologies that were employed to explore structure‐activity relationships of powder catalysts, similar to single‐crystal‐based model catalysts under ultrahigh vacuum conditions but can work at same conditions as powder catalysts without the "materials gap" and "pressure gap". In this perspective, the CeO2‐based NC model catalysts with various morphologies are included and their relevant progresses are critically reviewed. The detailed descriptions of morphology‐controlled synthesis and characterizations of uniform CeO2 NCs, and morphology‐dependent catalysis of CeO2‐based NC model catalysts containing pure CeO2 NCs, CeO2‐supported oxide catalysts, and CeO2‐supported metal catalysts, provide us a comprehensive cognition in CeO2‐involved catalytic reactions and also open up a new approach for the fundamental studies of complex heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, a concept of oxide‐based NC model catalysts and outlook of oxide NCs acting not only as model catalysts for the fundamental study but also as the support in tailoring structures and optimizing performance of oxide‐involved catalysts are discussed. Typical Crystal Face Effects of Different Morphology Ceria on the Activity of Pd/CeO2 Catalysts for Lean Methane Combustion

Abstract:The catalytic efficiency of CeO2 carriers and the catalytic properties of palladium (Pd) nanocrystals loaded on different morphology CeO2 carrier were studied for lean methane (CH4) combustion. The catalytic activity of simple CeO2 carriers was ranked in the order of rod-CeO2(r-CeO2) > cube-CeO2(c-CeO2) > octahedral-CeO2(o-CeO2). After the Pd species was loaded on CeO2, 90% of CH4 was converted at 348 degrees C catalyzed by Pd/octa-hedral-CeO2 (Pd/o-CeO2) with (1 1 1) crystal faces, which had much higher catalytic activity comparing with Pd loaded on c-CeO2 with (1 0 0) crystal faces and r-CeO2 with (1 1 0) and (1 0 0) crystal faces. The results of XRD, HRTEM, EDS, H-2-TPR, XPS and elemental mapping showed that the Pd species in the form of Pd-0 and PdO were highly dispersed on surface of all CeO2 carriers. Most importantly, quasi In-situ XPS results convinced that Ce3+/Ce4+ ion pairs played an important role in the catalytic combustion of low-concentration methane by adsorbing or releasing oxygen. Compared with r-CeO2 and c-CeO2, the concentration of Ce3+ on the surface of o-CeO2 carrier was greatly increased when the Pd species were present, which indirectly reflected that the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the carrier surface also increased. Consequently, the high catalytic activity of Pd/o-CeO2 is not only related to the high dispersion of Pd-0 and PdO species on the surface of the catalyst, but also closely related to the synergistic interaction between Pd species and (1 1 1) specific faces of o-CeO2 exposing.

Abstract:Heterogeneous hydroformylation enhances the separation process, avoiding the use of phosphine ligands and reducing the loss of precious metals. However, enhancing catalytic activity and elucidating reaction mechanisms remain challenging. In this work, we develop single-atom catalysts (SACs) of Rh-1/CeO2 with different morphologies and study their structure-performance relationships at the molecular level. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the Rh-1/CeO2-Rod catalysts reaches 9386 h(-1) with a relatively high Rh loading (1.08 wt %), outperforming most reported SACs. The presence of oxygen atoms with dangling bonds and the local stress surrounding the embedded Rh atoms are identified as the key factors behind the morphology effects. Our work deepens the molecular understanding of the morphology effects underlying the enhancement of hydroformylation activity and paves the way for the future design of highly active heterogeneous hydroformylation SACs with both high TOF and optimal Rh loading.
The Relation of Structure and Metal-Support Interaction with Three-Way Catalytic Performance of Rh/(Ce,Zr,La)O2 Catalysts

Abstract:(Ce,Zr,La)O2 (CZL) mixed oxide-supported rhodium (Rh) catalysts were prepared by in situ synthesis method. Characterizations were adopted to investigate the relation of structure and metal-support interaction with catalytic behavior of catalysts. The results demonstrate that appropriate Ce/Zr ratio (2/1~1/4) could help to form more homogenous CZL ternary solid solution and promote the formation of more oxygen vacancies and defects (the lattice defects resulting from lattice distortion) in CZL supports, and thereby enhance oxygen storage/release performance. Meanwhile, it strongly affects the interaction between RhOx and CZL supports, which promotes the formation of more active Rh species (Rh0 + Rh3+) and the reduction of the oxygen species in Rh–Ce interface, leading to the enhancement of catalytic performance for HC, CO, and NOx eliminations. Rh/CZL-12 shows the best catalytic activity for HC and NOx eliminations. It could be attributed to the enhanced activation and oxygen mobility of lattice oxygen, which is verified by the results of DOSC measurement.
Enhancement Mechanism of Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Activity of CeO 2 /CdS by Morphology Regulation

Abstract:The morphology of the catalyst is one of the important factors affecting the photocatalytic activity. Being highly specific exposed to different crystal facets has a significant effect on photocatalysis. Thereby, well-interpreted examples of CeO2, dominated by (311) and (220), respectively, are presented to explore the reactivity of photocatalyzed special exposed crystal surfaces in photocatalyzed hydrogen evolution. The photocatalytic activity of NR-CeO2 (311) was testified to be remarkably higher than NF-CeO2 (220). Further electrochemical detection studies have confirmed that the difference in activity is not only due to the different morphologies of the materials but also controlled by the different exposing facets, resulting in photogenerated carriers and effective spatial separation. When the mass proportion of NR-CeO2 and CdS is 1:4, the photocatalytic activity of NR-CeO2/CdS is highest (about 444 μmol·g–1·h–1), which is about 19.7 times stronger than that of pure CdS. The reaction mechanism was further confirmed by the DFT calculation. Effective separation of photogenerated carriers and specific rod-like shapes and surface atomic arrangements contribute to the high activity of well-designed CeO2/CdS photocatalysis. Combined with the experiment and characterization, the regulation mechanism of the CeO2 morphology and crystal surfaces with different morphologies was proposed, and the photogenerated carrier transport was evaluated. The results show that the morphology and crystal facets have great influence on the photocatalytic activity of CeO2.

Abstract:Three Ru/CeO2 catalysts with different morphologies of CeO2 (cube spheres, microspheres and nano rods) were used to evaluate the support-morphology-dependent ammonia synthesis activity. Catalytic experiments show that the Ru/CeO2–CS catalyst has higher catalytic activity (27,000 µmol g−1 h−1) than Ru/CeO2–MS (21,000 µmol g−1 h−1) and Ru/CeO2–NR (15,000 µmol g−1 h−1) under the reaction conditions of 450 °C, 3 MPa, H2/N2 = 3:1 (60 mL min−1). The transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the dispersion of active metal Ru is affected by the morphology of CeO2. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller indicates that the 3–5 nm the pore size of CeO2 supports contributes to the active metal Ru enters the pores of the CeO2 support, which improves the dispersion of Ru and prevents the sintering and agglomeration of Ru in some extent. TPR studies shown that the reduction of ruthenium oxide is influenced by the morphology of CeO2. XPS and CO2-TPD demonstrated that the Ru/CeO2–CS catalyst exhibited higher surface oxygen vacancies, higher basic site density and lower Ru binding energy, indicating that Ru nanoparticles in Ru/CeO2–CS is more electron-rich and are more capable of back-donating electrons to adsorbed N2 and subsequently activate N2. Our results indicate that the morphology effect of the CeO2 supports on the Ru/CeO2 catalyst is related to the pore size distribution and the surface oxygen vacancies of the CeO2 supports, ratio of Run+, basic site density.Graphical AbstractThe CeO2–CS (cube spheres) morphology facilitated the dispersion of the active metal Ru and the 3 nm the pore size of CeO2–CS contributed to the Ru enters the pores of the support. Promoting Effect of Zro2 Carrier on Activity and Thermal Stability of Ceo2-Based Oxides Catalysts for Toluene Combustion

Abstract:ZrO2 was used as a support for the preparation of Cu-Mn-Ce mixed oxides catalysts (CMC) by impregnation method and calcination at different temperatures. A model reaction, toluene combustion was conducted to evaluate the performance of CMC/ZrO2 catalysts. High thermal stability and activity was obtained on these catalysts. The effects of CMC loading and calcination temperature on the structure and redox properties of catalysts were also investigated by XRD, H-2-TPR, TEM and XPS. Results show that calcination leads to the interaction of ZrO2 and CMC via the formation of a new phase of Zr0.88Ce0.12O2 in the interface, which is more likely to be formed in the catalysts with low CMC loading levels. Zr0.88Ce0.12O2 seems to function as the actual carrier of active phase of CMC, which cannot only stabilize the surface active structure of CMC but also enhance the mobility of active oxygen and improve the catalytic performance of total oxidation as well. Morphology effects of nanoscale ceria on the activity of Au/CeO2 catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:Catalytic properties of Au nanoclusters deposited on a one-dimensional CeO2 (1-D) nanorod and CeO2-nanoparticles have been investigated during CO oxidation at ambient temperatures. The kinetic data showed that the activity of Au catalysts could be remarkably improved by using CeO2-nanorods as support compared to the CeO2-nanoparticles. The measured specific rate and apparent activation energy (Ea) at 278K were 4.02molCOgAu−1h−1 and 15.9kJmol−1, respectively, for the Au/CeO2-nanorods (Au-CR) catalyst, while those for the Au/CeO2-nanoparticles (Au-CP) catalyst were 0.15molCOgAu−1h−1 and 28.4kJmol−1, respectively. Characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance UV–Vis spectroscopy (DR UV–Vis) and in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of CO adsorption reveal that the predominantly exposed {100}/{110}-dominated surface structures of ceria nanorods show great superiority for anchoring and dispersing of gold nanoclusters, which in turn leads to a higher reducibility and activity of the Au-CeO2 surface for CO oxidation. It is also confirmed that, arising from the strong metal–support interaction (SMSI), the presence of gold nanoclusters has a strong influence on the electronic state of the CeO2 substrates.

WO3/CeO2 rod (WCR) displayed higher catalytic activity and resistance to SO2 and H2O compared with WO3/CeO2 polyhedron (WCP) and WO3/CeO2 cube (WCC). N2-BET, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, TEM, HRTEM, NH3-TPD, XPS and in situ DRIFTS were conducted to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the adsorption of NH3 and NOx species on the catalytic surface. These characterization results demonstrated that the larger BET surface area, the smaller CeO2 particle size, the higher surface acidity, the more oxygen defects, the better redox performance, and the higher Ce3+ and Oα ratios of the catalysts played critical functions in obtaining more outstanding NH3-SCR catalytic performance. All of these characterization results were also closely related to the CeO2 morphology. The results of the in situ DRIFTS showed that the WCR had the highest intensities of the adsorbed NOx and NH3 species among these three catalysts. The reactions between adsorbed species attributed to NOx and NH3 on the catalyst surface can also be a key factor in the NH3-SCR catalytic performance enhancement.

Abstract:We prepared four ceria supports with different morphologies (rod, cube, plate and polyhedra) by using hydrothermal methods and supported copper oxide catalysts, which are used for selective oxidation of CO in hydrogen-rich gas and characterized by various techniques. The results show that CuO/CeO2-rod and CuO/CeO2-polyhedra exhibit a higher low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity coupled with a broader operating temperature "window" (CO conversion >99.0%, 95-125 degrees C and 90-125 degrees C, respectively) in CO selective oxidation reaction, due to the higher content of the active species Cu+, the smaller copper oxide clusters subjected to a strong interaction with ceria and more oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalysts. In addition, higher specific surface area, smaller average pore size and concentrated pore-size distribution of mesopores are also beneficial to improve the catalytic performance. However, CuO/CeO2-cube shows the worst performance for CO-PROX, mainly due to the weak interaction between copper oxide particles and the exposed [100] facet of nanocube-ceria.
Morphology and Crystal-Plane Effects of CeO2 on TiO2/CeO2 Catalysts During NH3-SCR Reaction

Abstract:A series of supported TiO2/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized to investigate the morphology and crystal-plane effects of CeO2 on these TiO2/CeO2 catalysts for selective catalytic reduction by ammonia (NH3-SCR). The experiment results show that TiO2/CeO2-NC, TiO2/CeO2-NP, and TiO2/CeO2-NR catalysts present nanocubes (mainly exposed {100} facet), nanopolyhedrons (mainly exposed {111} and {100} facets), and nanorods (mainly exposed {110} and {100} facets), respectively. Furthermore, TiO2/CeO2-NR catalyst exhibits the best dispersion of TiO2 species, the most excellent reduction behavior and surface acidity, and the largest amount of Ce3+ ions and chemisorbed oxygen, which is due to the largest specific surface area and pore volume of CeO2-NR support, as well as the strongest interaction between the surface dispersed TiO2 species and the {110} facet of CeO2-NR support. All of them result in the best denitration performance of TiO2/CeO2-NR catalyst during NH3-SCR reaction.
