Abstract:A combination of time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TR-XRD), ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to carry out in situ characterization of Cu/CeO2 nanocatalysts during the hydrogenation of CO2. Morphological effects of the ceria supports on the catalytic performances were investigated by examining the behavior of copper/ceria nanorods (NR) and nanospheres. At atmospheric pressures, the hydrogenation of CO2 on the copper/ceria catalysts produced mainly CO through the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction and a negligible amount of methanol. The Cu/CeO2-NR catalyst displayed the higher activity, which demonstrates that the RWGS is a structure-sensitive reaction. In situ TR-XRD and AP-XPS characterization showed significant changes in the chemical state of the catalysts under reaction conditions, with the copper being fully reduced and a partial Ce4+ -> Ce3+ transformation occurring. A more effective CO2 dissociative activation at high temperature and a preferential formation of active bidentate carbonate and formate intermediates over CeO2(110) terminations are probably the main reasons for the better performance of the Cu/CeO2-NR catalyst in the RWGS reaction.

Abstract:Metal–oxide interfaces play a crucial role in catalyzing CO2 conversion, while comprehensively decoupling interfacial catalysis is challenging due to their structural complexity. Herein, Rh/CeO2 catalysts, whose interfacial structures are finely tuned by altering the CeO2 morphologies and Rh particle sizes, were employed for CO2 hydrogenation. The results reveal that the density of interfacial oxygen vacancies that varies with the CeO2 morphologies determines the catalytic activity, while the product selectivity strongly depends on the nature of supported Rh species. With a decrease in Rh particle size, the weakened metallicity results in the suppression of the Sabatier reaction and thus the low CH4 selectivity. Meanwhile, the enhanced reverse water–gas shift process that is more easily catalyzed than the Sabatier reaction contributes to the promotion of catalytic CO2 efficiency. Interestingly, the CH4 selectivity increases with the reaction temperature rise at fine Rh particles, which could be ascribed to the enhanced H-spillover effect at high temperatures. Spectroscopic results confirm CO2 hydrogenation proceeding through a redox mechanism to generate an adsorbed CO intermediate that either is further hydrogenated into CH4 with strong CO adsorption capacity/H-spillover effect or desorbs directly into CO.

Abstract:Three morphology-controlled CeO2, namely nanorods (NRs), nanocubes (NCs), and nanopolyhedra (NPs), with different mainly exposed crystal facets of (110), (100), and (111), respectively, have been used as supports to prepare Ru (3 wt.%) nanoparticle-loaded catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO⁻ temperature programmed desorption (CO-TPD), N2 adsorption⁻desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (XDS). The characterization results showed that CeO2-NRs, CeO2-NCs, and CeO2-NPs mainly expose (110), (100) and (111) facets, respectively. Moreover, CeO2-NRs and CeO2-NCs present higher oxygen vacancy concentration than CeO2-NPs. In the CO2 reforming of methane reaction, Ru/CeO2-NR and Ru/CeO2-NC catalysts showed better catalytic performance than Ru/CeO2-NPs, indicating that the catalysts with high oxygen vacancy concentration are beneficial for promoting catalytic activity.
An investigation of Zr/Ce ratio influencing the catalytic performance of CuO/Ce1-Zr O2 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH

Abstract:A series of CuO/Ce1- x Zr x O2 catalysts (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8) are applied to elaborate the effect of the Zr/Ce ratio on the catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH. The best catalytic performance is achieved with CuO/Ce0.4Zr0.6O2, exhibiting X CO2 = 13.2% and Y CH3OH = 9.47% (T = 280 °C, P = 3 MPa). The formation of dispersed surface CuO species and larger number of oxygen vacancies are detected over CuO/Ce0.4Zr0.6O2 due to stronger interaction between CuO and Ce0.4Zr0.6O2, resulting in the superior activation ability for H2 and CO2 respectively. Additionally, the evidence is provided by in situ DRIFTS under the activity test pressure (3 MPa) that bi/m-HCOO* species are preferable for accumulating over ceria-rich (CuO/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 and CuO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2) catalysts while zirconia-rich (CuO/Ce0.4Zr0.6O2 and CuO/Ce0.2Zr0.8O2) catalysts are benefit to encourage the transformation of bi/m-HCOO* species to CH3OH. The abundant population and high activity of intermediate species over CuO/Ce0.4Zr0.6O2 give a strong positive effect on the catalytic performance.

Abstract:We prepared four ceria supports with different morphologies (rod, cube, plate and polyhedra) by using hydrothermal methods and supported copper oxide catalysts, which are used for selective oxidation of CO in hydrogen-rich gas and characterized by various techniques. The results show that CuO/CeO2-rod and CuO/CeO2-polyhedra exhibit a higher low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity coupled with a broader operating temperature "window" (CO conversion >99.0%, 95-125 degrees C and 90-125 degrees C, respectively) in CO selective oxidation reaction, due to the higher content of the active species Cu+, the smaller copper oxide clusters subjected to a strong interaction with ceria and more oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalysts. In addition, higher specific surface area, smaller average pore size and concentrated pore-size distribution of mesopores are also beneficial to improve the catalytic performance. However, CuO/CeO2-cube shows the worst performance for CO-PROX, mainly due to the weak interaction between copper oxide particles and the exposed [100] facet of nanocube-ceria.

Abstract:This study elucidates the influence of the Ce promoter on the structure and surface intermediates of Fe-based catalysts and provides insights into the mechanism controlling the distribution of CO 2 hydrogenation products. The product distribution revealed a volcano-shaped trend for the selectivity of light olefins and C 5+ products as the Ce content increased from 0 to 10 wt%, whereas the selectivity for CH 4 shows an inverted volcano-shaped trend. Concurrently, the selectivity for CO gradually increased from 14.4 % to 58.8 %. When the Ce content was 1 wt%, the selectivity for light olefins and C 5+ products reached maximum values of 41.4 % and 19.1 %, respectively, and the selectivity for methane decreased to 34.3 %. Characterization by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ infrared spectroscopy (IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques demonstrated that the variation in product distribution could be attributed to the altered ratio of Fe 3 O 4 to Fe 5 C 2 species, surface enrichment of the Na promoter, and generation and desorption of surface intermediate species induced by the Ce promoter. These factors affect the rate of the reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGS) and the subsequent Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction, thereby modulating the product distribution. Understanding the regulation mechanism of the CO 2 hydrogenation product distribution by the Ce promoter is expected to provide valuable insights for guiding the design of catalyst structures.

Abstract:Adjustment of the CeO2 exposed planes is an effective tool for modifying the metal-support interaction, which is the basis for the excellent CO preferential oxidation (CO-PROX) performance of CuO/CeO2 catalysts. However, the relationship between the CeO2 exposed planes, CuO-CeO2 interaction and reaction performance is still un-clear. Herein, we investigated the effect of interactions on the structure of CuO/CeO2 catalysts and the CO-PROX reaction by modulating the CeO2 exposed planes (CuCe-NC (nanocubes) exposed {100} planes and CuCe-NP (nanoparticles) exposed {111} planes). The results indicate that the {100} plane exhibits greater CuO dispersal capabilities due to electron transfer caused by stronger interactions produces an anchoring effect on CuO. This promotes increased contact between CO and CuO during the reaction, creating more CO adsorption sites and improving low temperature activity. Furthermore, effective electron transfer between CuO and {1 0 0} planes during reaction maintains Cu+ stability while widening the temperature window. In-situ spectroscopy and DFT calculations showed that the Cu+-CO bond strength is weakened by the enhanced interaction, which together with the excellent surface structure of CeO2-{1 0 0}, favours the direct desorption of CO2. However, forming carbonate on CuCe-NP seems to be preferable. Various CO-PROX reaction pathways are suggested for different exposed crystal planes. This insight into crystal plane effects on CO-PROX may guide the design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:With the development of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, storage and utilization (CCSU) technologies, CO2 has gradually become a desired feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals like methane (CH4). Ceria (CeO2)-based catalysts have gained much attention because of their potential to efficiently hydrogenate CO2 to CH4 under mild conditions. Here we systematically outline the advances in CeO2-based catalysts for CO2 methanation mainly from the perspective of mechanism investigation and catalyst development. Various in situ/operando and ex situ technologies have verified that active metal and oxygen vacancies at the metal/metal oxide-CeO2 interface act as the prime active sites to promote the formation and hydrogenation of key intermediates during the CO2 methanation reaction. Kinetic analysis and in situ DRIFT characterization combined with theoretical calculations revealed that the reaction mechanism toward CO2 methanation is sensitive to active sites, and the formate route versus the carboxyl (CO*) route has been widely detected as the main methanation pathway over CeO2-based catalysts. Additionally, mainstream strategies to improve CeO2-based catalysts include optimizing reducibility, adjusting the distribution of basic sites, dispersing active metal supported on CeO2, and increasing the amount of oxygen vacancies or additional active sites for CO2 adsorption and selective hydrogenation into CH4. Finally, perspectives on the deeper understanding of active sites and intermediates' evolution and the challenges of CeO2-based catalysts for CO2 methanation in future investigations are presented.
Identification of Relevant Active Sites and A Mechanism Study for Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction over Pt/Ceo2 Catalysts

Abstract:Reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction can serve as a pivotal stage in the CO2 conversion processes, which is vital for the utilization of CO2. In this study, RWGS reaction was performed over Pt/CeO2 catalysts at the temperature range of 200–500°C under ambient pressure. Compared with pure CeO2, Pt/CeO2 catalysts exhibited superior RWGS activity at lower reaction temperature. Meanwhile, the calculated TOF and Ea values are approximately the same over these Pt/CeO2 catalysts pretreated under various calcination conditions, indicating that the RWGS reaction is not affected by the morphologies of anchored Pt nanoparticles or the primary crystallinity of CeO2. TPR and XPS results indicated that the incorporation of Pt promoted the reducibility of CeO2 support and remarkably increased the content of Ce3+ sites on the catalyst surface. Furthermore, the CO TPSR-MS signal under the condition of pure CO2 flow over Pt/CeO2 catalyst is far lower than that under the condition of adsorbed CO2 with H2-assisted flow, revealing that CO2 molecules adsorbed on Ce3+ active sites have difficult in generating CO directly. Meanwhile, the adsorbed CO2 with the assistance of H2 can form formate species easily over Ce3+ active sites and then decompose into Ce3+–CO species for CO production, which was identified by in-situ FTIR.
CO2 Methanation over the Ni-based Catalysts Supported on Nano-Ceo2 with Varied Morphologies

Abstract:A series of CeO2 supports with particular morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, nanooctas, and nanoparticles) were successfully fabricated by controlling the parameters of the hydrothermal method. The obtained nano-CeO2 materials were utilized as the supports of the Ni-based CO2 methanation catalysts prepared by the incipient impregnation method. It was found that the catalyst supported on the CeO2 nanoparticles (5Ni/NPs) exhibited much higher catalytic activity and better stability than those of catalysts with other morphological CeO2 supports. Thus, the catalytic performance of Ni/CeO2 catalysts could be facilely tuned and optimized by precisely designing the morphology of the CeO2 support. The XPS, CO2-TPD, and H2-TPR characterizing techniques showed that Ni-based catalysts supported on nano-CeO2 with varied morphologies displayed different catalytic performances. It was supposed that the typical merits, such as the abundant oxygen vacancy, medium basic sites, moderate metal-support interaction, excellent reduction ability, etc., were considered as the main origins for the enhancement of the low-temperature catalytic activities. Furthermore, the kinetic study revealed that the Ni-based catalysts supported on the nano-CeO2 with varied morphologies performed the different apparent activation energies toward CO2 methanation. The specific reaction intermediates and possible reaction pathways were carefully investigated through the in-situ DRIFTS and online TPSR techniques. Overall, this work would provide new perspectives that the roles of the morphology effect of the support ought to be emphatically considered when designing new catalysts.
Reverse Water–gas Shift Reaction over Co-Precipitated Co–CeO2 Catalysts: Effect of Co Content on Selectivity and Carbon Formation

Abstract:The Co-CeO2 catalysts with different cobalt contents were prepared via co-precipitation method and used for reverse water-gas shift (RWGS: CO2 + H-2 -> CO + H2O) reaction. Characterizations of the catalysts were conducted by XRD, TPR, TPO, TEM and SEM. The results show that highly dispersed Co3O4 interacted with CeO2 is formed in 2% Co-CeO2 catalyst, and the catalyst shows excellent RWGS catalytic performance in terms of activity, selectivity and low carbon deposition. However, in the catalysts with high Co loading amount (>= 5%), bulk Co3O4 with larger particle size is formed, which leads to obviously increased carbon deposition and by-product CH4 production during the reaction. These results suggest that highly dispersed Co, reduced from highly dispersed Co3O4 on CeO2, should be the key active component for RWGS reaction; while bulk Co with large particle size should be the key active component for methanation and carbon deposition. Abstract:Methanol reforming has been a popular pathway to produce hydrogen due to the high hydrogen storage density of methanol. CeO 2 as the support is widely used for catalytic methanol reforming, but the effect of CeO 2 morphology on the reaction mechanism has not been revealed out. In this study, the catalytic performances of Ru/CeO 2 with different CeO 2 morphology, including rod, cubic and their mixed, were investigated in methanol reforming for the production of hydrogen. By regulating the temperature during hydrothermal preparation, different CeO 2 supports can be achieved. Results showed that Ru/CeO 2 catalyst with rod CeO 2 (Ru/r-CeO 2 ) exhibited a much better catalytic performance than the cubic catalyst (Ru/c-CeO 2 ) and the mixed catalyst (Ru/m-CeO 2 ), with a higher yield of hydrogen and a lower selectivity of CO product. This was mainly due to the large surface area that favored the dispersion of Ru metal site and the interaction between Ru and CeO 2 support that improved the electron transfer to benefit the formation of oxygen vacancy. Therefore, the Ru/r-CeO 2 catalyst possessed abundant oxygen vacancy, which enabled to adsorb the methanol efficiently and trigger the methanol reforming reaction. It also can enhance the adsorption of CO and water and promote the water-gas-shift reaction to increase the yield of hydrogen production.

Abstract:The CuO supports with different morphology were prepared using the precipitation method. The inverse CeO2/CuO catalysts were synthesized by the impregnation method, and characterized via XRD, H2-TPR, SEM, TEM, XPS and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. The study showed that CO oxidation took place at the interface of CeO2–CuO catalysts. The CeO2/CuO catalysts maintained their morphologies, structure and the length of periphery at the CeO2–CuO interface in the hydrogen-rich reaction gasses during the reaction. The two-dimensional and homogeneous petal morphology of support was most favorable for the formation of long periphery at the CeO2–CuO interface, therefore the CeO2 supported on the CuO with petal morphology presented good catalytic activity.

Abstract:CeO2(rod) has been found to be exposed four {111} planes and two {100} planes with a hexangular cross section, and the growth mechanism follows to the oriented attachment of the cube-like basic grains with a [110] growth direction and the subsequent Ostwald ripening, corresponding to the increasing lateral size and longitudinal size with prolonging the hydrothermal time. Equal amount of copper oxide totally highly distributed on the surface of CeO2(rod) supports with different abundance of oxygen vacancies facilitate to produce the strongly bound Cu-[Ox]-Ce species to different degrees (supported by XPS, H2-TPR and in situ DRIFTs results), which is encouraged by prolongation of hydrothermal time of CeO2(rod) supports. The essential role of interfacial Cu-Ce interaction in CuCe(rod) catalysts for CO-PROX was identified by the enhanced catalytic performance of CuCe(rod)-48h, on account of much stronger Cu-Ce interaction generated in it. Moreover, we proposed a potential structural model of strongly bound Cu-[Ox]-Ce to interpret the synergetic effect of copper and ceria species in CuO/CeO2 catalysts and generalized the possible reaction mechanism for CO-PROX over the CuCe(rod) catalyst.
Low-Temperature CO2 Methanation over CeO2-Supported Ru Single Atoms, Nanoclusters, and Nanoparticles Competitively Tuned by Strong Metal–Support Interactions and H-Spillover Effect

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation for the acquisition of value-added chemicals is an economical means to deal with the CO2-relevant environmental problems, among which CO2 reduction to CH4 is an excellent model reaction for investigating the initial steps of CO2 hydrogenation. For the supported catalysts commonly used in such reactions, the tailoring of the interfacial effect between metal centers and supporting materials so as to obtain superior low-temperature CO2 methanation performance is a significant but challenging subject. In this work, we altered the size regimes of the Ru deposits in Ru/CeO2 assemblies and uncovered the competitive relationship between the strong metal support interactions (SMSI) and the H-spillover effect in determining the methanation activities by some ex situ and in situ spectroscopic techniques coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For CeO2 nanowire supported single Ru atoms, Ru nanoclusters (ca. 1.2 nm in size), and large Ru nanoparticles (ca. 4.0 nm in size), the nanoclusters show the most outstanding low -temperature CO2 methanation activity and 98-100% selectivity, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 7.41 x 10(-3) s(-1) at 190 degrees C. The negative CO2 reaction order decreases their absolute values from single atoms to nanoclusters and turns positive in nanoparticles, while the positive H-2 reaction order follows the reverse tendency. In situ DRIFTS measurements demonstrate that the dominant reaction pathway is the CO route, in which metal carbonyls are the critical intermediates and the active sites are those Ce3+-OH sites and Ru sites near the metal support interfaces in charge of CO2 dissociation and carbonyl hydrogenation, respectively. Meanwhile, the strongest SMSI and H-spillover effect are respectively encountered in supported single Ru atoms and large Ru nanoparticles, with the activation of metal carbonyls and the dehydration of the support surfaces suppressed correspondingly. The two factors reach a balance in CeO2-supported Ru nanoclusters, and the methanation activity is therefore maximized. A mechanistic understanding of the interfacial effect in tuning the CO2 methanation activities would shed light on the ingenious design of the CO2 hydrogenation catalysts to utilize the SMSI and H-spillover effect to an appropriate degree and avoid their possible suppressions that would take place in extreme cases.

Abstract:The interfacial structure of metal and oxide support plays a pivotal role in reverse water gas shift (RWGS). However, rare work investigated the factor of the metal-oxide interface during RWGS reaction. In this work, the interface of Cu/CeO2 catalysts was designed through the thermal treatment of copper nitrate salt on CeO2 with an H2 atmosphere under different temperatures, and CO2 hydrogenation performance was studied at 400 °C to investigate the effect of interfacial structure on RWGS reaction. Among these prepared catalysts, Cu/CeO2-400 catalysts achieved the best CO2 conversion activity (CO production rate 1.23 mol/gcat .h). Cu interacted with CeO2 to form Cu-O-Ce interface and induced more oxygen vacancy formation. The oxygen vacancy around the Cu-CeO2 interface enhanced CO2 adsorption and promoted CO2 conversion. CO2 reacted with active hydrogen to COOH, then COOH species dissociated into CO and OH adsorbed on the surface of Cu-CeO2. These results gave insights into the design of a highly effective catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation.
