Abstract:The introduction of mesoscale (∼0.1–1.0μm) structures is one of effective approaches to reduce the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials. In this study, n-type PbTe bulk samples were fabricated by semisolid powder processing (SPP) using powders synthesized by melting. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) results showed that there were circular mesoscale pores in the grains of the samples fabricated by SPP. The mesoscale pores effectively reduced the lattice thermal conductivity by enhancing the scattering of phonons with long mean free paths. The samples fabricated by SPP had a figure of merit (ZT) value of 1.33 at 773K, which showed an enhancement of 77% compared with that of their hot-pressed counterparts. This enhancement mainly resulted from the lower lattice thermal conductivity and higher power factor of the SPP samples.

Abstract:In situ nanostructuring in bulk thermoelectric materials through thermo-dynamic phase segregation has established itself as an effective paradigm for optimizing the performance of thermoelectric materials. In bulk PbTe small compositional variations create coherent and semicoherent nanometer sized precipitates embedded in a PbTe matrix, where they can impede phonon propagation at little or no expense to the electronic properties. In this paper the nanostructuring paradigm is for the first time extended to a bulk PbS based system, which despite obvious advantages of price and abundancy, so far has been largely disregarded in thermoelectric research due to inferior room temperature thermoelectric properties relative to the pristine fellow chalcogenides, PbSe and PbTe. Herein we report on the synthesis, microstructural morphology and thermoelectric properties of two phase (PbS)(1-x)(PbTe)(x)x = 0-0.16 samples. We have found that the addition of only a few percent PbTe to PbS results in a highly nanostructured material, where PbTe precipitates are coherently and semicoherently embedded in a PbS matrix. The present (PbS)(1-x)(PbTe)(x) nanostructured samples show substantial decreases in lattice thermal conductivity relative to pristine PbS, while the electronic properties are left largely unaltered. This in turn leads to a marked increase in the thermoelectric figure of merit. This study underlines the efficiency of the nanostructuring approach and strongly supports its generality and applicability to other material systems. We demonstrate that these PbS-based materials, which are made primarily from abundant Pb and S, outperform optimally n-type doped pristine PbTe above 770 K.

Abstract:Lead telluride (PbTe) has long been considered as an ideal p-type thermoelectric material at an intermediate temperature range. However, the relatively low thermoelectric performance of n-type PbTe largely limits the commercial applications of integral PbTe devices. In current work, we report that a significant enhancement of the ZT value of approximate to 1.3 can be achieved at 823 K in PbTe0.998I0.002-0.5%C-60 by adding low-dimensional C-60 nanodots. This remarkable improvement in thermoelectric performance is attributed to the incorporation of C-60 in n-type PbTe matrix, which creates dense nanodots that can simultaneously manipulate electron and phonon transport. On one hand, the dispersion of C-60 nanodots in n-type PbTe matrix leads to highly depressed lattice thermal conductivity (kappa(lat)) (similar to 52%) due to the refinement of grains and the extra phonon scattering centers. On the other hand, the introduction of C-60 nanodots increases the scattering parameter r(x), and brings about the overall improvement of Seebeck coefficient S, especially at room temperature. This work demonstrates the great potential of low-dimensional dopant in optimizing PbTe thermoelectric materials, which should be equally applicable in improving the performance of other thermoelectric materials. Achieving higher thermoelectric performance of n-type PbTe by adjusting band structure and enhanced phonons scattering

Abstract:Due to the very distinct electronic band structure and lower power factor, the exploration of n-type PbTe as thermoelectric materials has historically fallen behind that of p-type PbTe. In this work, n-type Pb0.97Sb0.03Te-based composites incorporated with Cu12Sb4S13 nanoparticles are synthesized and investigated. Sb doping is utilized to modify its carrier concentration in order to obtain n-type PbTe materials with high power factor. Then, the incorporating of Cu12Sb4S13 nanoparticles can generate the semi-coherent nano phase CuTe, and simultaneously optimize the thermal and electrical properties due to remarkable energy filtering effects and interface scattering in the higher temperature range. Eventually, a peak figure of merit ZT ≈ 1.58 was obtained at 773 K for the sample Pb0.97Sb0.03Te + 1.5 wt.% Cu12Sb4S13, indicating that incorporation of Cu12Sb4S13 in Pb0.97Sb0.03Te is an effective approach to improve its thermoelectric performance.

Unique Semi‐Coherent Nanostructure Advancing Thermoelectrics of N‐Type PbSe

Abstract:Introducing nanostructures into bulk thermoelectric materials is an effective strategy for reducing lattice thermal conductivity (kappa(lat)). However, large numbers of hanging bonds emerge on account of lattice mismatch usually at the interfaces between nanostructures and matrix, thereby significantly deteriorating carrier mobility (mu (H)) and seriously limiting thermoelectric performance. Here, utilizing the cointroduction of Gd-Cu2Te into n-type PbSe as a paradigm, the zT could be greatly improved. The conduction band flattening caused by Gd doping can successfully compensate for the small Seebeck coefficient in n-type PbSe, thus achieving extraordinary electrical performance. Further advanced electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectra directly demonstrate that most of the Cu forms nanoscale Cu2Se precipitates, especially a unique semi-coherent interface between the PbSe matrix and the Cu2Se nanoprecipitate is observed for the first time. Such nanoprecipitate accompanied by the semi-coherent interface not only ensures higher mu (H) as an excellent charge transfer mediator but also collectively scatters the heat-carrying phonons over a wide frequency range to obtain the ultralow kappa(lat), resulting in the prominent improvement of the ratio mu (H)/kappa(lat). The present finding represents an important step forward in electron-phonon decoupling via constructing semi-coherent nanostructure and interface engineering, which should be applicable for other thermoelectric materials.
Enhanced thermoelectric performance of n-type Nb-doped PbTe by compensating resonant level and inducing atomic disorder

Abstract:The inferior thermoelectric performance of n-type PbTe limits the overall conversion efficiency in PbTe-based thermoelectric devices. Here, we introduce Sb and Cu2Te into n-type Nb-doped PbTe for achieving ultra-high thermoelectric performance. The co-doping of Sb and Cu effectively optimizes carrier concentration to compensate for the resonant level in Nb-doped PbTe alloys, and consequently achieves superior electrical performance over a wide temperature range. Meanwhile, by combining extended X-ray absorption fine structure and exhaustive electron microscopy investigations, we found Nb and Sb substitutions at Pb sites induce atomic disorders, such local mass fluctuation and local strain variation, in the lattice, and Cu2Te further results in microsized segregations and nanoprecipitates, which significantly suppress lattice thermal conductivity. Eventually, a peak ZT of ∼1.32 at 823 K and a high average ZT ave ∼1.01 in the range from 323 to 823 K are achieved in the Pb0·975Nb0·02Sb0·005Te-0.004Cu2Te. Based on our findings, we innovatively employ comprehensive characterization to reveal the origin of ultrahigh thermoelectric performance in n-type Nb-doped PbTe within a wide temperature range, which should be generalized to other thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Nanocomposites have already been widely used to enhance thermoelectric performance since they exhibit exceptionally low lattice thermal conductivities. Further improvement is expected to arise from boosting the power factor and charge carrier relevant figure of merit ZT with nanoinclusions. Here we present that Ag nanoscale inclusions embedding in the n -PbTe can meet this requirement. The quantitative relationships between such nanostructures in PbTe and thermoelectric properties, using a versatile model including the details of geometry, electron–phonon interactions, quantization, and tunneling, showed that the Seebeck coefficient can be significantly enhanced due to interface potential barrier induced by Ag nanoinclusions. Additionally, it was found that high-concentration Ag nanoinclusions with 1–2 nm radius can effectively enhance the thermoelectric performance of PbTe through energy-selective carrier scattering, especially around room temperature. The power factor and charge carrier relevant figure of merit ZT can be elevated by at least 80% and 260%, respectively. These findings highlight effective strategies to nanostructuring for overcoming the high threshold to commercial application for cooling and power generation.

Abstract:Bi 2 Te 3 is a good thermoelectric compound that can be adjusted to p- or n- type with corresponding substitutions; however, less progress has been achieved for the property enhancement of n -type Bi 2 (TeSe) 3 compared with p -type (BiSb) 2 Te 3 . Textured n -type Bi 2 (TeSe) 3 with an enhanced thermoelectric performance has been developed in this study by combining texturing with in situ nanostructuring effects. The spark plasma-textured structure boosts the electrical transport properties and the power factors as benefits of the layered microstructure. It also leads to a simultaneous rise in the thermal conductivity along the a -axis. We developed a method to suppress increases in the thermal conductivity by inducing nanostructures, such as highly distorted regions and nanoscopic defect clusters, as well as dislocation loops that can form when texturing occurs at an optimized temperature. In this work, textured n -type Bi 2 (TeSe) 3 materials having enhanced thermoelectric performances within a low temperature range are developed with a maximum dimensionless figure of merit ( ZT max ) exceeding 1.1 at 473 K. The present method, which synergetically utilizes the texturing and nanostructuring effects, could also be applied to other thermoelectric compounds having layered structures.

Abstract:Thermoelectric effects enable direct conversion between thermal and electrical energy and provide an alternative route for power generation and refrigeration. Over the past ten years, the exploration of high-performance thermoelectric materials has attracted great attention from both an academic research perspective and with a view to industrial applications. This review summarizes the progress that has been made in recent years in developing thermoelectric materials with a high dimensionless figure of merits (ZT) and the related fabrication processes for producing nanostuctured materials. The challenge to develop thermoelectric materials with superior performance is to tailor the interconnected thermoelectric physical parameters — electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity — for a crystalline system. Nanostructures provide a chance to disconnect the linkage between thermal and electrical transport by introducing some new scattering mechanisms. Recent improvements in thermoelectric efficiency appear to be dominated by efforts to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity through nanostructural design. The materials focused in this review include Bi–Te alloys, skutterudite compounds, Ag–Pb–Sb–Te quaternary systems, half-Heusler compounds and some high-ZT oxides. Possible future strategies for developing thermoelectric materials are also discussed.

Abstract:The development of n-type high-performance PbTe thermoelectric materials for matching its p-type counterparts is an urgent matter to expand its practical applications. Here, we introduce Ag2Te into n-type Pb0.975Cr0.025Te for achieving a high peak figure of merit of 1.5 at 773 K. Such a high value is attributed to the synergistic optimization of carrier and phonon transports by Ag2Te introducing and the dynamic doping of Ag. From the detailed structure and property analysis, we found that Ag2Te nanoprecipitates establish coherent interfaces and hence potential barriers with the matrix to induce energy-dependent carrier scattering and maintain relatively high carrier mobility, leading to an optimal electrical-transport properties over a wide temperature range. Moreover, we employ comprehensive electron microscopy investigations and approximate Debye-Callaway model to reveal the origin of the significantly reduced lattice thermal conductivity in Ag2Te-alloyed Pb0.975Cr0.025Te. The strategies used here provide an effective method for designing high-performance thermoelectric material systems.

Abstract:Previous efforts to enhance thermoelectric performance have primarily focused on reduction in lattice thermal conductivity caused by broad-based phonon scattering across multiple length scales. Herein, we demonstrate a design strategy which provides for simultaneous improvement of electrical and thermal properties of p-type PbSe and leads to ZT ~ 1.6 at 923 K, the highest ever reported for a tellurium-free chalcogenide. Our strategy goes beyond the recent ideas of reducing thermal conductivity by adding two key new theory-guided concepts in engineering, both electronic structure and band alignment across nanostructure-matrix interface. Utilizing density functional theory for calculations of valence band energy levels of nanoscale precipitates of CdS, CdSe, ZnS, and ZnSe, we infer favorable valence band alignments between PbSe and compositionally alloyed nanostructures of CdS1-xSex/ZnS1-xSex. Then by alloying Cd on the cation sublattice of PbSe, we tailor the electronic structure of its two valence bands (light hole L and heavy hole Σ) to move closer in energy, thereby enabling the enhancement of the Seebeck coefficients and the power factor.

Abstract:Lead sulfide (PbS) is a type of promising thermoelectric materials which is consist of elements with high natural abundance. However, the relatively low conversion efficiency limits its further application due to the high lattice thermal conductivity of PbS compared with that of PbTe. It has been widely accepted that nanostructuring and doping are effective ways to enhance the thermoelectric properties. Herein, nano/micro structure Bi doped PbS materials have beensynthesized by a facile method of hydrothermal synthesis. The nano/micro structure material systems exist abundant interface which could scatter mid- and low-frequency phonons effectively, combined with point defect such as Bi–Pb scattering high-frequency phonons, and thus the results show that the lattice thermal conductivity of PbS decreases with the increasing concentration of Bi3+ doping as expected. Moreover, the optimal power factor (PF) can be obtained by tuning the carrier concentration and mobility at the same time. The optimal thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) can reach 0.89 for Pb0.96Bi0.04S at 773K and rises with the increase of the temperature without sign of saturation. Our work may shed light to further possible and environmentally friendly application of PbS-based thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Both heterostructures and hollow nanostructures have been predicted as candidates with excellent thermoelectric performance. In this Research News areticle, recent advances with regard to synthetic strategies, growth mechanisms, and thermoelectric properties of one-dimensional heterostructures (segmented and core/shell) and tubular nanostructures are reported. The thermoelectric property studies of Te/Bi core/shell heterostructured nanowires and Bi2Te3 nanotubes indicate that the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of these materials can be optimized to improve their thermoelectric performance. In addition, the current issues and future research directions for promising thermoelectric nanostructures will be discussed on the basis of these experimental results.

Abstract:A unique semi‐coherent phase interface, characterized by low lattice mismatch, ensures high carrier mobility while reducing the lattice thermal conductivity at low and medium temperatures of the matrix. Coupled with the dynamic doping effect of Cu, the electrical and thermal transport properties of the n‐type PbSe samples are comprehensively enhanced. N‐type PbSe thermoelectric materials encounter challenges in improving the power factor due to the single‐band structure near the Fermi level, which obstructs typical band convergence. The primary strategy for enhancing the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) for n‐type PbSe involves reducing lattice thermal conductivity (κlat) by introducing various defect structures. However, lattice mismatches resulting from internal defects within the matrix can diminish carrier mobility, thereby affecting electrical transport properties. In this study, n‐type AgCuTe‐alloyed PbSe systems achieve a peak ZT value of ≈1.5 at 773 K. Transmission electron microscopy reveals nanoprecipitates of Ag2Te, the room temperature second phase of AgCuTe, within the PbSe matrix. Meanwhile, a unique semi‐coherent phase boundary is observed between the PbSe matrix and the Ag2Te nanoprecipitates. This semi‐coherent phase interface effectively scatters low‐frequency phonons while minimizing damage to carrier mobility. Additionally, the dynamic doping effect of Cu atoms from the decomposition of AgCuTe within the matrix further optimize the high‐temperature thermoelectric performance. Overall, these factors significantly enhance the ZT across the whole temperature range. The ZT value of ≈1.5 indicates high competitiveness compared to the latest reported n‐type PbSe materials, suggesting that these findings hold promise for advancing the development of efficient thermoelectric systems.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials can directly convert electrical energy and thermal energy by regulating carrier and phonon transport under electrical and thermal fields. However, further enhancement of thermoelectric properties is hindered by limited available methods that can synergistically tune transport properties. Here, multiferroic BiFeO 3 nanoparticles with spontaneous electrical and magnetic polarization are synthesized and incorporated into p -type Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 , to probe the impact of simultaneous local electrical field and magnetic field on the transport properties of the BiFeO 3 /Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 nanocomposites. The BiFeO 3 /Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 atomic-resolution interfacial structure is revealed using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The selective reaction of Sb cations leads to reduced carrier concentration and decreased electrical conductivity. The Seebeck coefficient is enhanced by additional scattering from local electrical and magnetic field. Phonon scattering is boosted by the nanostructures from interfacial reaction and local lattice distortion caused by the polarization. As a result, the ZT values and the cooling performance are improved by 9% and 31% for the nanocomposites, respectively.

Realizing high thermoelectric performance in Te nanocomposite through Sb2Te3 incorporation

Abstract:The rational design and fabrication of nanostructures has become a fashionable strategy for pursing high thermoelectric performance in solid-state materials. Here we report nanostructured Te-Sb2Te3 composites with significantly enhanced thermoelectric performance through a scalable bottom-up method followed by a rapid sintering process. The power factor along with the carrier concentration could be significantly enhanced by increasing the number of point defects of Sb'(Te). Meanwhile, a great number of boundaries and hetero-interfaces between the Te and Sb2Te3 nanoparticles could play an important role in blocking phonons, resulting in the evident suppression of lattice thermal conductivity. Ultimately, a highest zT value close to 1.0 could be achieved at 623 K in samples with components of 2.6 mol% Sb2Te3 and 97.4 mol% Te. Such a peak zT value is comparable to that of doped Te materials synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction process. Abstract:Thermoelectric materials enable direct inter-conversion between electrical energy and thermal energy. The conversion efficiency is limited by their complex interdependent thermoelectric parameters. Here, we report that the electrical and thermal transport properties of n-type PbTe can be simultaneously improved by introducing just one component, MnTe. We obtained a maximum ZT of similar to 1.6 at 773 K and an average ZT(ave) of > 1.0 at 300-873 K in n-type MnTe alloyed PbTe. This remarkably enhanced performance arises from the triple functions of MnTe alloying: (1) making the conduction band flatter to increase the effective mass from 0.31 m(e) to 0.45 m(e); (2) enlarging the band gap of PbTe to suppress the bipolar thermal conductivity; and (3) introducing point defects instead of nanoprecipitates to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity while maintaining a relatively high carrier mobility. Our results indicate that high performance can be achieved in n-type PbTe by integrating different but synergistic concepts.

Abstract:Introducing resonant levels is a potent strategy to improve the thermoelectric properties of the thermoelectric systems. However, the beneficial effect of resonant levels tends to be weakened with rising temperature for the PbTe system. This motivates us to introduce dynamic doping of Cu into Cr-doped n-type PbTe to achieve the fully optimized carrier transport over a wide temperature range. As a consequence, an extraordinary figure of merit, ZT of - 0.55 at room temperature, a peak ZT of - 1.31 at 773 K and an average ZT of - 1.02 in the range of 323 to 823 K are obtained in the Pb0.975Cr0.025Te-0.2%Cu. Additionally, how co-doped of Cr and Cu contributes to suppressing thermal transports is still ambiguous. Herein, we employ comprehensive electron microscopy investigations to reveal that the synergistic incorporation of Cr and Cu into the PbTe matrix results in a series of phonon scattering sources, including massive point defects, high-density of nanoscale precipitates, microscale secondary phases, and dense grain boundaries, which can significantly reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by enhancing phonon scattering. This work clarifies the fundamental Cr-doping mechanism in PbTe and demonstrates that dynamic Cu-doping engineering is an effective approach to boosting thermoelectric performance, which should be applied in other thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:The intrinsically low thermal conductivity and excellent electrical properties of lead telluride (PbTe) compounds are highly promising for the thermoelectric conversion in intermediate temperature range. However, a problematic issue is that the inferior thermoelectric performance of n-type leg severely restricts the applications of PbTe-based thermoelectric couples. Here we report a highly boosted figure of merit peak value of 1.73 at 843 K in graphene-incorporated n-type PbTe compound. The dramatically improved thermoelectric performance is ascribed to the realization of a multi-scale feature of graphene-induced interfacial decorations distributing along grain boundaries, which creates massive PbTe/graphene interfaces for the manipulation of electron and phonon transport properties. In detail, lattice thermal conductivity is abundantly suppressed by the graphene-induced grain boundary scattering upon low-frequency phonons. Simultaneously, nano-scale graphene precipitates trigger the energy filtering effect, bringing about distinctly enhanced Seebeck coefficient and power factor. The present strategy of implementing high-efficiency interfacial engineering (IE) from graphene additions with multiple scales offers an applicable pathway for fabricating high-performance thermoelectric materials with both optimized thermal and electrical transport properties.
