Abstract:Dealumination by chemical etching with acids has been one of the most common post-treatment methods for secondary porosity engineering of zeolite but inevitably suffers from adverse impacts on its skeleton structure and acidic properties. Herein, we present a novel method to treat HZSM-5 zeolite in a buffer solution of HF/NH4F and employ AlF3 as an external Al source for one-step dealumination and alumination. The as-prepared hierarchical zeolites remain with high crystallinity and acidity, while secondary mesopores are formed. A suitable loading of AlF3 (1.0 wt %) together with a diluted buffer solution (0.1 M) is the most optimal condition, under which the mesoporous volume of HZSM-5 increases from 23 to 41% from the total volume. Under the synergetic effects of H+ and F–, AlF3 undergoes complexation, hydrolysis, and dehydration reactions and is introduced into the frameworks. The catalytic performances for reforming lignite pyrolytic volatiles into light aromatics at 600 °C showed that the AlF3-modified zeolites exhibited higher activity than the parent toward suppressing the coke deposition and yielding the desired products.

Abstract:The dealumination of USY (ultrastable Y) zeolites by nitric acid and oxalic acid treatment was systematically investigated by multinuclear solid-state NMR and MQ MAS NMR experiments. The results show that both acids are very effective in removing non-framework Al as well as framework Al but that aluminum is extracted from the lattice at a higher rate by oxalic acid even at low concentrations. The presence of different species (e.g. silanol nest, Al–OH, four-coordinated framework Al, six-coordinated framework Al, six-coordinated non-framework Al and five-coordinated non-framework Al) was detected, and their changes were followed during the dealumination. The investigation gives evidence that the breakdown of the parent USY zeolite mainly depends on the degree of dealumination and that non-framework Al exerts a great effect on the acidity of the USY zeolite. Leaching-induced increase in the Brønsted acidity of the USY zeolite was also observed by 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy. The different distribution of Al species in these samples accounted for the different catalytic performance of n-dodecane cracking.

Abstract:Post-synthetic dealumination treatment is a common tactic adopted to improve the catalytic performance of industrialized zeolitic catalysts through enhancements in acidity and stability. However, among the possible extra-framework aluminum (EFAL) species in dealuminated zeolites such as Al3+, Al(OH)(2+), Al(OH)(2)(+), AlO+, AlOOH, and Al(OH)(3), the presence of tri-coordinated EFAL-Al3+ species, which exhibit large quadrupolar effect due to the lack of hydrogen-bonding species, was normally undetectable by conventional one- and two-dimensional H-1 and/or Al-27 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with experimental P-31 SSNMR using trimethylphosphine (TMP) as the probe molecule, we report herein a comprehensive study to certify the origin, fine structure, and possible location of tri-coordinated EFAL-Al3+ species in dealuminated HY zeolite. The spatial proximities and synergies between the Bronsted and various Lewis acid sites were clearly identified, and the origin for the observed EFAL-Al3+ species with ultra-strong Lewis acidity was deduced to be at the expense of adjacent Bronsted acid sites. The excellent performance of such tri-coordinated EFAL species was furthermore confirmed by glucose isomerization reactions.

Abstract:Zeolites are key materials in chemical industry exploited for their microporous structure. The control of the Si/Al ratio is one of the primary topics in zeolite science, especially for zeolites with 8-rings as their largest pores (small-pore zeolites), when considering their uses in catalysis and other applications. Although the direct synthesis method often yielded small-pore zeolites with a limited Si/Al ratio, our group successfully demonstrated post-synthetic dealumination in the presence of organic pore fillers. So far several types of small-pore zeolites, including AEI and AFX zeolites, could be dealuminated by acid treatment, still RHO zeolite loses its crystallinity after acid treatment, requiring another strategy for successful dealumination. In this work, successful dealumination of RHO zeolite with preserved crystallinity is demonstrated by acid treatment followed by post-synthesis recrystallization. The decrease in crystallinity during acid treatment is recovered by crystallization in the presence of a saturated silicate solution, and the final Si/Al ratio exceeded 7. When 18-crown-6 ether is added to the treatment solution as a pore-filling agent to avoid the occlusion of excess inorganic cations into the zeolite pores, the final bulk Si/Al ratio is 7.5. The relative crystallinity and micropore volume are 83 % and 0.27 cm3 g−1, respectively, showing its high crystallinity. The resulting RHO zeolite is expected to show a superior hydrothermal stability during catalytic application such as selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.

Abstract:Variations in the microporous structure and non-framework aluminum (AlNF) distribution of HZSM-5 zeolite with a crystal size less than 100 nm dealuminated by thermal and hydrothermal treatment have been investigated by xenon adsorption and 129Xe NMR spectroscopy. The secondary pores in the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite are observed directly via 129Xe NMR spectroscopy. As evidenced by 129Xe NMR and XPS, for the calcined microsized HZSM-5, most of the AlNF may deposit on its external surface, a small amount of AlNF may be located in its channels. However, for the calcined nanosized HZSM-5, most of the AlNF may be located in the channels, while a small amount of AlNF may be located on the external surface. After hydrothermal treatment at lower temperature, the distribution of AlNF in dealuminated nanosized HZSM-5 is heterogeneous. It is not only present in the channels and on the external surface as in the case of microsized HZSM-5, but also near the pore entrances at the outer edge of the crystallites. However, at higher steaming temperatures, more AlNF in both the microsized and the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites will migrate to their external surface.
MAS NMR Studies on the Dealumination of Zeolite MCM-22

Abstract:The dealumination of Zeolite MCM-22 by calcination or hydrothermal treatment was investigated by conventional multinuclear solid-state NMR and checked by an ultrahigh-field NMR experiments (19.6 T) with a very fast spin rate (19.1 kHz). The presence or variation of different species (e.g. silanol nest, 4-coordinated framework, 6-coordinated and 5-coordinated extraframework aluminum) during or after dealumination was detected, and their changes were followed. Four tetrahedral framework aluminum sites were identified upon the Al-27 MAS NMR experiments showing chemical shifts at 61.5, 57.0, 53.5, and 50.0 ppm, respectively. After hydrothermal treatment, aluminum at 57.0 ppm which corresponded to T-3, T-4, T-7, T-10, and T-12 sites in the orthorhombic model is preferentially expelled from the zeolitic framework. Moreover, a dehydroxylation process without the release of four-coordinated framework Al also happened, resulting in the presence of a tricoordinated framework aluminum species, which, together with the formation of tetrahedral framework aluminum species, may serve as the Lewis acid site of the zeolite.
Deep Dealumination of Ultrafine Nay Zeolite

Abstract:The ultrafine NaY zeolite with 200 nm grain size was dealuminated deeply by the optimized treatment of (NH4)2SiF6 solution, steamed at 600 oC, silicon sol + oxalic acid, and steamed at 800 oC, respectively. The first treatment of (NH4)2SiF6 solution is very important, which can fix the framework defects of zeolite and strengthen its stability. The amount of (NH4)2SiF6 and treated number need to be carefully controlled according to the grain size of NaY zeolite. For 200 nm NaY zeolite, the best molar ratio of (NH4)2SiF6 to framework aluminum of zeolite is 0.16 and once treatment is relatively appropriate. The final dealuminated Y zeolite has the high framework Si/Al ratio of 27.3 and surface area of 581.9 m2/g, as well as the crystallinity of 65%. The key factor for the successful deep dealumination of ultrafine Y zeolite is to repair promptly its crystal defects resulting from the dealumination process. The treatments of (NH4)2SiF6 solution, silicon sol, and steamed at 800 oC appear such effect.

Abstract:The dealumination of zeolite Y was carried out with aqueous solutions of oxalic acid and citric acid,respectively. The zeolite samples before and after dealumination were characterized by XRD,XRF, XPS and IR. The results showed that the zeolite with high relative crystallinity degree and low extra-frame-work aluminium could be obtained after ion exchange to reduce sodium content,and hydrothermal treat-ment and calcinations to remove aluminium with organic acid. The zeolite treated with citric acid pos-sessed higher molar ratio of silica to alumina and higher relative crystallinity degree than that treated with oxalic acid under the same ratios of citric acid or oxalic acid to zeolite. The extra-framework aluminium, especially on external surface of the zeolite,could be removed by organic acid treatment,and the molar ratio of silica to alumina and relative crystallinity degree of the zeolite were increased. The crystal cell size of zeolite changed little after being treated with citric acid under the condition of m(citric acid):m(zeolite)=a:1~( a+0 . 10 ):1 . But with the enhancement of mass ratio of citric acid to zeolite to( a+0 . 15 ):1 ,the crystal cell size of zeolite and the relative crystallinity degree reduced. The ratio of B/L acid reduced with the increase of the mass ratio of citric acid to zeolite.
Study of dealumination of NaY zeolite with different acids

Abstract:NaY zeolites have been treated with oxalic acid,citric acid,tartaric acid,sulfosalicylic acid and sulfuric acid in (NH 4) 2SO 4 buffer system. The effects of addition rate of dealuminating agent,reaction time and temperature on the amount of dealumination and the crystallinity of zeolites are discussed. The results show that oxalic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid are good dealuminating agents which keep the crystallinity of dealuminated products very well in the buffer system when about 15% framework aluminium is removed. It is the combined effects of acid dissociation equilibrum and coordinated equilibrium of acid with framework aluminum in buffer system to keep the dealuminated zeolite highly crystalline. A mechanism for the dealumination reaction is presented.

Abstract:Ammonium hexafluorosilicate (AHFS) is an effective dealumination reagent for MCM-22 zeolite, and the Si/Al2 ratio range of MCM-22 was extended largely (SiO2/Al2O3∼300) by AHFS treatment. The physicochemical properties of the MCM-22 samples before and after dealumination were characterized by XRD, XRF, N2 adsorption and pyridine-IR measurements. Also, the samples were used as catalysts in C4 alkenes catalytic cracking to propene and the results showed that properly dealuminated MCM-22 (Si/Al2 ratio 58) exhibited higher activity, better stability and similar product distribution relative to the parent MCM-22 zeolite.

Abstract:A sustainable defect‐engineering strategy for the dealumination of Y zeolite is described. This strategy includes the green synthesis of a well‐crystallized Y zeolite with point defects arising from the incorporation of Fe atoms by using Fe‐containing perlite and the subsequent preparation of ultra‐stable Y (USY) zeolite by efficient steaming dealumination. The systematic characterizations verify that Fe atoms originally existing in the perlite are incorporated into the as‐synthesized Y zeolite and function as point defects, leading to the distortion of framework Al. The step‐by‐step investigation of dealumination process shows that vacancies are formed by the extraction of framework Fe in ammonium exchange, and the framework dealumination is promoted under the combined effect of the distorted framework Al and the formed vacancies during steaming treatment. The resulting USY zeolite owns excellent features in (hydro)thermal stability, pore structure and acid property, and exhibits outstanding catalytic performance in the cracking of n‐octane and 1,3,5‐triisopropylbenzene.

Abstract:Realumination of dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolites by acid treatment has always been controversial and puzzling. Through characterizations of XRD, nitrogen adsorption, NH3-TPD, IR, XPS and 27Al MAS NMR, this work confirmed realumination of dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolites could indeed be achieved after treated with HCl solution. And it was found mainly a portion of the penta-coordinated extra-framework aluminia (EFAl) were reinserted into the framework during the process of realumination. Moreover, the characterizations of ICP-AES and UV–Vis-DRS of Co2+-exchanged zeolites indicated the realumination capacity was closely related to the distribution of framework Al (AlF). Realumination was more likely achieved when there was lower content of Al pairs and less AlF located in the channel intersections in HZSM-5. Finally, realuminated zeolites exhibited a higher conversion of n-octane due to its more Brønsted acid sites than dealuminated HZSM-5 in catalytic cracking reaction. The significantly lower content of Al pairs in realuminated zeolites compared to parent HZSM-5 inhibits the hydride transfer process to a certain extent, resulting in a higher selectivity of propylene.

Abstract:A hollow structured zeolite MFI nano‐box is achieved under mild etching conditions of atmospheric pressure and low temperature of 80 °C, leading to the successful fabrication of a continuous b‐oriented hierarchical MFI zeolite film with desired microstructure of embedded cavities and opened pores, which presents ultralow k value accompanied with high mechanical strength. Constructing a hollow structure inside zeolite is very helpful for improving its performance. Unlike the conventional alkaline etching technique usually operated at high temperature (typically 170 °C) and high pressure (autogenerated in autoclave), here, it is discovered that zeolite MFI nano‐box can be achieved under mild etching conditions of atmospheric pressure and low temperature of 80 °C, making it very attractive for energy conservation and practical applications. A hollow‐structure formation mechanism of protection‐dissolution etching is demonstrated by characterizing MFI crystals obtained under different etching time, temperature, and etchant concentration. The utilization of template agent‐free secondary growth leads to the successful fabrication of a continuous b‐oriented hierarchical MFI zeolite film with desired microstructure of embedded cavities and opened pores. The advantage of the newly constructed film is highlighted by its ultralow k value accompanied with high mechanical strength.

Abstract:The adsorption properties of binder-free and binder-containing ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts were compared, and the former one was proved to possess the excellent properties. The binder-free ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst has been treated with HCl solution, steaming, and steaming combined with HCl solution, respectively. The de-alumination behavior and the states of yielded non-framework aluminum on the treated catalysts were studied with Al-27 MAS NMR. Some important properties of the treated catalysts, such as the crystalline structures, compositions, pore structures, and distribution of surface strong (S) and weak (W) acidity, Bronsted (B) and Lewis (L) acidity, have been investigated in detail with X-ray diffraction, XRF, N-2 adsorption, NH3-TPD and pyridine-adsorption in situ infrared spectroscopy, respectively. The nature of strong tuning effect on the properties of the zeolite framework and surface solid acidity has been revealed for the zeolite catalyst treated with steaming, which plays the key role in tuning the S acidity and B acidity.
Unravelling the Crucial of Spatial Al Distribution to Realize Precise Alkali‐Treatment for Target Acid‐Catalyzed Reactions

Abstract:Constructing mesoporous structure within zeolites by alkali-treatment is an effective protocol to improve their diffusion properties. However, undesirable changes in Brönsted acid site (BAS) densities always offset this advantage in acid-catalyzed reactions. In this context, the crucial roles of spatial aluminum distribution were unraveled during alkali-treatment of MFI zeolite and the desirable BAS density was achieved in obtained hierarchical samples for the target reactions. Various characterization methods, particularly the multiple one- and two-dimensional magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR techniques, were performed to track the alkali-treatment processes. For the sample with a more uniform spatial Al distribution, more tetrahedral Al sites would fall off and migrate around the Si-OH in zeolite as Al(OH)4-. Those re-deposited Al(OH)4- sites were easily transformed into NMR-invisible Al sites during the calcination process, which contributed negligibly to both Brönsted and Lewis acidities, thus being referred to"acid-free"Al species. While most tetrahedral Al sites were preserved after the alkali-treatment of sample with non-uniform Al distribution and the BAS density gradually increased with treatment time. According to the requirements of typical acid-catalyzed reactions, such as catalytic cracking of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene and methanol-to-olefins, the desired hierarchical zeolite catalysts were developed by matching the amounts of extracted Si and generated"acid-free"Al during the precise alkali-treatment.

Abstract:Systematic investigation was performed to understand the change of physiochemical properties in Y zeolite after the microwave (MW)-assisted dealumination (using mineral acid, HCl, and chelating agent, EDTA4−) and the subsequent alkaline treatment (of the dealuminated zeolites). The findings show that the combination of EDTA4− and hydrogen ions was effective to achieve dealumination of zeolite Y under MW irradiation, which formed complexed framework Al, instead of extra-framework Al (EFAl), to be extracted readily by the sequential alkaline treatment for mesopore formation. Conversely, under the same MW condition, the use of HCl encouraged the formation of EFAl species in the defective Y framework, which did not benefit the mesopore formation. The disclose of the distinct dealumination mechanisms of the MW-assisted method using different agents can benefit the further development of effective MW methods for dealumination of zeolites and/or making mesoporous zeolites.

Alkaline synthesis of pure silica ITH zeolite for vapor phase Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime

Abstract:Pure silica ITH zeolite is normally synthesized under neutral or acidic conditions in the presence of HF, but it is challenging for synthesis of this zeolite under alkaline conditions. In this work, it is successful for alkaline synthesis of pure silica ITH in the absence of HF using a designed organic template containing F species, showing that the sample obtained has high crystallinity associated with ITH structure, nanosheet morphology, and rich silanol nests. Very importantly, this ITH zeolite exhibited better performance in vapor phase Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime than that of Silicalite‐1 zeolite, one of the best catalysts for this reaction. This work might offer a new opportunity for preparation of pure silica zeolites as efficient catalysts in the Beckmann rearrangement in the future.
