Abstract:Dealuminated Y zeolite with high crystallinity is obtained from NaY zeolite by treatment with oxalic acid in a buffering system. The effect of dealumination conditions on the degree of dealumination and the crystallinity of the reformed zeolite is discussed. A mechanism for the reaction is proposed.

Abstract:NaY zeolites have been treated with oxalic acid,citric acid,tartaric acid,sulfosalicylic acid and sulfuric acid in (NH 4) 2SO 4 buffer system. The effects of addition rate of dealuminating agent,reaction time and temperature on the amount of dealumination and the crystallinity of zeolites are discussed. The results show that oxalic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid are good dealuminating agents which keep the crystallinity of dealuminated products very well in the buffer system when about 15% framework aluminium is removed. It is the combined effects of acid dissociation equilibrum and coordinated equilibrium of acid with framework aluminum in buffer system to keep the dealuminated zeolite highly crystalline. A mechanism for the dealumination reaction is presented.

Abstract:The dealumination of zeolite Y was carried out with aqueous solutions of oxalic acid and citric acid,respectively. The zeolite samples before and after dealumination were characterized by XRD,XRF, XPS and IR. The results showed that the zeolite with high relative crystallinity degree and low extra-frame-work aluminium could be obtained after ion exchange to reduce sodium content,and hydrothermal treat-ment and calcinations to remove aluminium with organic acid. The zeolite treated with citric acid pos-sessed higher molar ratio of silica to alumina and higher relative crystallinity degree than that treated with oxalic acid under the same ratios of citric acid or oxalic acid to zeolite. The extra-framework aluminium, especially on external surface of the zeolite,could be removed by organic acid treatment,and the molar ratio of silica to alumina and relative crystallinity degree of the zeolite were increased. The crystal cell size of zeolite changed little after being treated with citric acid under the condition of m(citric acid):m(zeolite)=a:1~( a+0 . 10 ):1 . But with the enhancement of mass ratio of citric acid to zeolite to( a+0 . 15 ):1 ,the crystal cell size of zeolite and the relative crystallinity degree reduced. The ratio of B/L acid reduced with the increase of the mass ratio of citric acid to zeolite.

Abstract:The dealumination of USY (ultrastable Y) zeolites by nitric acid and oxalic acid treatment was systematically investigated by multinuclear solid-state NMR and MQ MAS NMR experiments. The results show that both acids are very effective in removing non-framework Al as well as framework Al but that aluminum is extracted from the lattice at a higher rate by oxalic acid even at low concentrations. The presence of different species (e.g. silanol nest, Al–OH, four-coordinated framework Al, six-coordinated framework Al, six-coordinated non-framework Al and five-coordinated non-framework Al) was detected, and their changes were followed during the dealumination. The investigation gives evidence that the breakdown of the parent USY zeolite mainly depends on the degree of dealumination and that non-framework Al exerts a great effect on the acidity of the USY zeolite. Leaching-induced increase in the Brønsted acidity of the USY zeolite was also observed by 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy. The different distribution of Al species in these samples accounted for the different catalytic performance of n-dodecane cracking.
Deep Dealumination of Ultrafine Nay Zeolite

Abstract:The ultrafine NaY zeolite with 200 nm grain size was dealuminated deeply by the optimized treatment of (NH4)2SiF6 solution, steamed at 600 oC, silicon sol + oxalic acid, and steamed at 800 oC, respectively. The first treatment of (NH4)2SiF6 solution is very important, which can fix the framework defects of zeolite and strengthen its stability. The amount of (NH4)2SiF6 and treated number need to be carefully controlled according to the grain size of NaY zeolite. For 200 nm NaY zeolite, the best molar ratio of (NH4)2SiF6 to framework aluminum of zeolite is 0.16 and once treatment is relatively appropriate. The final dealuminated Y zeolite has the high framework Si/Al ratio of 27.3 and surface area of 581.9 m2/g, as well as the crystallinity of 65%. The key factor for the successful deep dealumination of ultrafine Y zeolite is to repair promptly its crystal defects resulting from the dealumination process. The treatments of (NH4)2SiF6 solution, silicon sol, and steamed at 800 oC appear such effect.

Abstract:Zeolites are key materials in chemical industry exploited for their microporous structure. The control of the Si/Al ratio is one of the primary topics in zeolite science, especially for zeolites with 8-rings as their largest pores (small-pore zeolites), when considering their uses in catalysis and other applications. Although the direct synthesis method often yielded small-pore zeolites with a limited Si/Al ratio, our group successfully demonstrated post-synthetic dealumination in the presence of organic pore fillers. So far several types of small-pore zeolites, including AEI and AFX zeolites, could be dealuminated by acid treatment, still RHO zeolite loses its crystallinity after acid treatment, requiring another strategy for successful dealumination. In this work, successful dealumination of RHO zeolite with preserved crystallinity is demonstrated by acid treatment followed by post-synthesis recrystallization. The decrease in crystallinity during acid treatment is recovered by crystallization in the presence of a saturated silicate solution, and the final Si/Al ratio exceeded 7. When 18-crown-6 ether is added to the treatment solution as a pore-filling agent to avoid the occlusion of excess inorganic cations into the zeolite pores, the final bulk Si/Al ratio is 7.5. The relative crystallinity and micropore volume are 83 % and 0.27 cm3 g−1, respectively, showing its high crystallinity. The resulting RHO zeolite is expected to show a superior hydrothermal stability during catalytic application such as selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.

Abstract:The inevitable dealumination process of zeolite Y is closely related to ultrastabilization, enhanced Bronsted acidity, and deactivation throughout its life cycle, producing complex aluminum and acidic hydroxyl species. Most investigations on dehydrated zeolites have focused on the Bronsted acidity of tetra-coordinated Al (Al(IV)) and Lewis acidity associated with tricoordinated Al (Al(III)) sites, which has left the penta-coordinated Al (Al(V)) in dealuminated zeolites scarcely discussed. This is largely due to the oversimplified view of detectable Al(V) as an exclusively extra-framework species with Lewis acidity. Here we report the formation of Bronsted acidic penta-coordinated Al species (Al(V)-BAS) in the dealumination process. Two-dimensional (2D) through-bond and multiquantum H-1-{Al-27} correlation solid-state NMR experiments demonstrate the presence of a bridging Si-OH-Al(V) structure in dealuminated Y zeolites. Different from the conventional belief that water attack leads to the breaking of zeolite framework Al-O bonds in the initial stage of zeolite dealumination, the observed Al(V) as a dealumination intermediate is directly correlated with a BAS pair because of the direct dissociation of water on the framework tetrahedral aluminum (Al(IV)), thus bypassing the cleavage of Al-O bonds. H-1 double-quantum solid-state NMR experiments and theoretical calculations provide further evidence for this mechanism, whereas pyridine adsorption experiments confirm stronger acidity of Al(V)-BASs than the traditional bridging hydroxyl groups associated with Al(IV). We were also able to detect the Al(V)-BAS site from dealuminated SSZ-13 zeolite with CHA topology, suggesting that its creation is not specific to the framework structure of zeolites.

Abstract:Systematic investigation was performed to understand the change of physiochemical properties in Y zeolite after the microwave (MW)-assisted dealumination (using mineral acid, HCl, and chelating agent, EDTA4−) and the subsequent alkaline treatment (of the dealuminated zeolites). The findings show that the combination of EDTA4− and hydrogen ions was effective to achieve dealumination of zeolite Y under MW irradiation, which formed complexed framework Al, instead of extra-framework Al (EFAl), to be extracted readily by the sequential alkaline treatment for mesopore formation. Conversely, under the same MW condition, the use of HCl encouraged the formation of EFAl species in the defective Y framework, which did not benefit the mesopore formation. The disclose of the distinct dealumination mechanisms of the MW-assisted method using different agents can benefit the further development of effective MW methods for dealumination of zeolites and/or making mesoporous zeolites.

Abstract:A sustainable defect‐engineering strategy for the dealumination of Y zeolite is described. This strategy includes the green synthesis of a well‐crystallized Y zeolite with point defects arising from the incorporation of Fe atoms by using Fe‐containing perlite and the subsequent preparation of ultra‐stable Y (USY) zeolite by efficient steaming dealumination. The systematic characterizations verify that Fe atoms originally existing in the perlite are incorporated into the as‐synthesized Y zeolite and function as point defects, leading to the distortion of framework Al. The step‐by‐step investigation of dealumination process shows that vacancies are formed by the extraction of framework Fe in ammonium exchange, and the framework dealumination is promoted under the combined effect of the distorted framework Al and the formed vacancies during steaming treatment. The resulting USY zeolite owns excellent features in (hydro)thermal stability, pore structure and acid property, and exhibits outstanding catalytic performance in the cracking of n‐octane and 1,3,5‐triisopropylbenzene.

Abstract:A versatile dealumination strategy was proposed to stabilize low-silica zeolites through cannibalistic interaction between the host framework Al (FAL) and the guest aluminum salt. It is possible to capture selectively the FAL and Na ions in NaY zeolite by employing a special external Al source such as aluminum sulfate as the dealuminating agent. This unique postmodification reduces the FAL amount efficiently and converts the chemically reacted Al species into a g-alumina support for the catalytically active component of zeolite, which avoids wasting Al sources. Possessing greatly enhanced hydrothermal stability, newly generated intracrystal mesopores, as well as an optimized distribution of FAL, the resultant dealuminated Y zeolite catalysts can be used practically in heavy oil cracking.

Abstract:From the 27Al MAS NMR and 2D 3QMAS NMR experiments, it can be concluded that during the steaming process of zeolite omega, some part of the framework tetrahedral Al species are gradually distorted. The 30ppm broad hump in the 1D 27Al spectra is mainly due to appearance of the distorted tetrahedral Al. With the dealumination process going on, penta-coordinated Al species are formed and contribute also to the 30ppm broad hump. There exists the trend that the formation of penta-coordinated Al occurs with the consumption of the distorted tetrahedral Al species. Because the same phenomenon of the 27Al NMR signals has also been observed in other zeolites, such as mordenite, ZSM-5 and Y, it could be regarded as a general procedure in the process of dealumination of acidic zeolites.

Abstract:A series of ultrastable Y zeolites with varies Si/Al mol ratio prepared by different dealumination methods have been investigated.After modification by lanthanum incorporation and aging at 800℃ in 100% steam for 4h,the pore structure and acidic property of dealuminated Y zeolites were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and pyridine-IR methods.The catalytic cracking performances were evaluated with microactivity test(MAT) of fluid catalytic cracking(FCC).It is found that LaFSY samples prepared by using(NH_4)_2SiF_6 as the dealumination reactant combined with hydrothermal treatment have homogeneous framework aluminum distribution,and a performance of high cracking activity and low coke yield in FCC is obtained by controlling the dealumination extent using the dealumination method.The LaOSY sample prepared by using oxalic acid as the dealumination reactant combined with hydrothermal treatment has a large mesopore volume which gives the sample a performance of better liquid yield selectivity for residue catalytic cracking.
MAS NMR Studies on the Dealumination of Zeolite MCM-22

Abstract:The dealumination of Zeolite MCM-22 by calcination or hydrothermal treatment was investigated by conventional multinuclear solid-state NMR and checked by an ultrahigh-field NMR experiments (19.6 T) with a very fast spin rate (19.1 kHz). The presence or variation of different species (e.g. silanol nest, 4-coordinated framework, 6-coordinated and 5-coordinated extraframework aluminum) during or after dealumination was detected, and their changes were followed. Four tetrahedral framework aluminum sites were identified upon the Al-27 MAS NMR experiments showing chemical shifts at 61.5, 57.0, 53.5, and 50.0 ppm, respectively. After hydrothermal treatment, aluminum at 57.0 ppm which corresponded to T-3, T-4, T-7, T-10, and T-12 sites in the orthorhombic model is preferentially expelled from the zeolitic framework. Moreover, a dehydroxylation process without the release of four-coordinated framework Al also happened, resulting in the presence of a tricoordinated framework aluminum species, which, together with the formation of tetrahedral framework aluminum species, may serve as the Lewis acid site of the zeolite.

Abstract:A new strategy to dealumination, silicon insertion and H-proton exchange of NaY in one step with acid ethanol solution is reported in this article. The removal of framework aluminum is controlled by modulating the acid through adjusting the water amounts in the ethanol, and the formed cationic non-framework aluminum species are solved in the solution by complexation with hydroxy carboxylate. Substitution of framework silicon for aluminum (stabling the zeolite structure) and the H-proton exchanges with sodium are completed in this dealumination process simultaneously. By using tartaric acid as leaching agent in ethanol solution, 78% of the framework aluminum atoms can be released with 94% exchange of the sodium cations in this dealumination process. This new strategy displays two advantages: firstly, excluding the NH4+ pollution by using acid to exchange sodium cation directly, and secondly, energy- and time-saving by combining the dealumination, silicon insertion and H-proton exchange in one step.

Abstract:Zeolite HZSM-5 calcined at different temperatures were studied by Si-29 MAS NMR and EPR methods. It is proposed that over a certain temperature range, dealumination did not necessarily occur simultaneously with framework dehydroxylation and thus framework Lewis acid sites may emerge. A two-step mechanism of dehydroxylation may be present, and it dominates the dehydroxylation and dealumination processes at different temperatures.

Abstract:Realumination of dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolites by acid treatment has always been controversial and puzzling. Through characterizations of XRD, nitrogen adsorption, NH3-TPD, IR, XPS and 27Al MAS NMR, this work confirmed realumination of dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolites could indeed be achieved after treated with HCl solution. And it was found mainly a portion of the penta-coordinated extra-framework aluminia (EFAl) were reinserted into the framework during the process of realumination. Moreover, the characterizations of ICP-AES and UV–Vis-DRS of Co2+-exchanged zeolites indicated the realumination capacity was closely related to the distribution of framework Al (AlF). Realumination was more likely achieved when there was lower content of Al pairs and less AlF located in the channel intersections in HZSM-5. Finally, realuminated zeolites exhibited a higher conversion of n-octane due to its more Brønsted acid sites than dealuminated HZSM-5 in catalytic cracking reaction. The significantly lower content of Al pairs in realuminated zeolites compared to parent HZSM-5 inhibits the hydride transfer process to a certain extent, resulting in a higher selectivity of propylene.

Abstract:The acid sites in dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolite with crystal sizes down to the nanoscale were firstly characterized by the probe molecule trimethylphosphine (TMP). As evidenced by the combination of 31P CP/MAS NMR, 27Al MAS and 1H→27Al CP/MAS NMR measurements, the Brönsted acid sites of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 could be decreased upon the dealumination of zeolitic framework after hydrothermal treatment. At the same time, the appearance of Lewis acid sites was observed. The dealuminated nanosized HZSM-5 is easier to form Lewis acid sites than microsized HZSM-5, and the type of Lewis acid sites in nanosized HSM-5 is more than one. In addition, the origin of Lewis acid sites is mainly associated with the aluminum at ca. 30ppm in the 27Al MAS NMR spectra, and only a part of which in the dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolite acts as Lewis acid sites.
Using ultrasound to improve the sequential post-synthesis modification method for making mesoporous Y zeolites

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous Y zeolites were prepared by the sequential chemical dealumination (using chelating agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, H 4 EDTA, and citric acid aqueous solutions) and alkaline desilication (using sodium hydroxide, NaOH, aqueous solutions) treatments. Specifically, the ultrasound-assisted alkaline treatment (i.e., ultrasonic treatment) was proposed as the alternative to conventional alkaline treatments which are performed under hydrothermal conditions. In comparison with the hydrothermal alkaline treatment, the ultrasonic treatment showed the comparatively enhanced efficiency (with the reduced treatment time, i.e., 5 min vs. 30 min, all with 0.2 mol·L −1 NaOH at 65°C) in treating the deal-uminated Y zeolites for creating mesoporosity. For example, after the treatment of a dealuminated zeolite Y (using 0.1 mol·L −1 H4EDTA at 100°C for 6 h), the ultrasonic treatment produced the mesoporous zeolite Y with the specific external surface area ( S external ) of 160 m 2 ·g· −1 and mesopore volume ( V meso ) of 0.22 cm 3 ·g −1 , being slightly higher than that by the conventional method (i.e., S extemal = 128 m 2 ·g −1 and V meso = 0.19 cm 3 ·g −1 ). The acidic property and catalytic activity (in catalytic cracking of n -octane) of mesoporous Y zeolites obtained by the two methods were comparable. The ultrasonic desilication treatment was found to be generic, also being effective to treat the dealuminated Y zeolites by citric acid. Additionally, the first step of chemical dealumination treatment was crucial to enable the effective creation of mesopores in the parent Y zeolite (with a silicon-to-aluminium ratio, Si/Al = 2.6) regardless of the subsequent alkaline desilication treatment (i.e., ultrasonic or hydrothermal). Therefore, appropriate selection of the condition of the chemical dealumination treatment based on the property of parent zeolites, such as Si/Al ratio and crystallinity, is important for making mesoporous zeolites effectively.

An Improved Dealumination Method for Adjusting Acidity of Hzsm-5

Abstract:An improved dealumination method for adjusting the acidity of HZSM-5 was developed by utilizing the self-adsorbed water in HZSM-5. The parent and treated HZSM-5 were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, 27Al MAS NMR, N2 adsorption, XRF and NH3-TPD. The results showed that HZSM-5 can be dealuminated when treated at above 400°C. About 80% acidic amount was removed from parent HZSM-5 with 8% adsorbed water and more Lewis acid sites were produced after treated at 500°C. It is thought that the dealumination was mainly caused by its self-adsorbed water. The comparisons of the acidity in dealuminated HZSM-5 by traditionally steaming and improved methods indicated that the latter was more effective in decreasing the acidity and weakening acid strength, and more environmentally benign and timesaving. The method is also applicable to adjust acidity of other zeolites, such as HY, Hβ.
