Abstract:A series of novel water/alcohol soluble small molecular phorphyrin derivatives, Por-N, Por-NBr, For-Cu-N and Por-Cu-NBr, were designed and synthesized. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that the neutral molecules Por-N and For-Cu-N exhibited distinct melting point and crystallinity, while no observable characteristics were realized for the quaternized molecules. All these small molecules exhibited good thermal stability as evaluated by thermal gravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of these small molecules were systematically investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy in both solutions and as thin films. It was found that the absorption spectra of For-Cu-N and For-Cu-NBr were slightly blue-shifted due to the formation of complex between porphyrin and copper. The highest occupied molecular orbitals energy levels showed negligible changes as determined by cyclic voltammetry measurements. The bulk-heterojunction solar cells utilizing these phorphyrin derivatives as the cathode interlayer and PCE10:PC71BM as the photoactive layer were fabricated. The single carrier devices revealed that the electron mobility of these phorphyrin derivatives are much higher than the hole-mobility except Por-N. Polymer solar cell devices with the structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PCE10: PC71BM/Porphyrin derivatives/A1 were fabricated to evaluate the function of cathode interlayer of these molecules. It was also worth noting that the polymer solar cell devices by using these molecules as the cathode interlayer exhibited obviously improved performances than the methanol treated device. Devices based on the molecules of Por-NBr, For-Cu-N and For-Cu-NBr as the cathode interlayer and narrow bandgap PCE10:PC71BM blend film as the photoactive layer exhibited comparatively high power conversion efficiency exceeding 9%. The best power conversion efficiency of 9.12% was achieved by the device based on For-Cu-N as the cathode inter layer, with corresponding parameters of short circuit current of 16.91 mA.cm(-2), open circuit voltage of 0.79 V and fill factor of 68.1%. These observations demonstrated that the synthesized water/alcohol soluble small molecules based on porphyrin derivatives can be prominent cathode interfacial layers for polymer solar cells.

Abstract:We present a strategy to fabricate polymer solar cells in inverted geometry by self-organization of alcohol soluble cathode interfacial materials in donor-acceptor bulk heterojunction blends. An amine-based fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl)(methyl)amino)ethyl ester (PCBDAN) is used as an additive in poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and 6,6-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend to give a power conversion efficiency of 3.7% based on devices ITO/P3HT:PCBM:PCBDAN/MoO3/Ag where the ITO alone is used as the cathode. A vertical phase separation in favor of the inverted device architecture is formed: PCBDAN is rich on buried ITO surface reducing its work function, while P3HT is rich on air interface with the hole-collecting electrode. The driving force of the vertical phase separation is ascribed to the surface energy and its components of the blend compositions and the substrates. Similar results are also found with another typical alcohol soluble cathode interfacial materials, poly[(9,9-bis(3'-(N, N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PFN), implying that self-organization may be a general phenomenon in ternary blends. This self-organization procedure could eliminate the fabrication of printing thin film of interlayers or printing on such thin interlayers and would have potential application for roll-to-roll processing of polymer solar cells.
The effect of alcohol solvent treatment on the performance of inverted polymer solar cells

Abstract:Significant performance change has been observed for inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs) with the structure of ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PC 61 BM/MoO 3 /Ag when the photoactive layer was rinsed by spin-coating alcohol solvent before the deposition of MoO 3 and Ag anode. As a result, isopropanol (IPA) treatment can dramatically enhance the device performance of inverted PSCs while methanol, ethanol, and 1-butanol treatment led to worse photovoltaic performance. The enhancing device performance should be attributed to the remove of PC 61 BM near the top of the P3HT:PC 61 BM active layer by spin-coating IPA due to better wetting with the photoactive layer, resulting in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and short-circuit current (J sc ) increased from 3.96% and 8.97 mA/cm 2 to 4.49% and 9.92 mA/cm 2 for IPA treatment, respectively. This facile alcohol-treated route provides a promising method to enhance the device performance of inverted PSCs.

Abstract:Three alcohol/water-soluble porphyrins (Zn-TPyPMeI:zinc(II) meso -tetra( N -methyl-4-pyridyl) porphyrin tetra-iodide, Zn-TPyPAdBr:zinc(II) meso -tetra[1-(1-adamantylmethyl ketone)-4-pyridyl] porphyrin tetra-bromide and MnCl-TPyPAdBr:man-ganese(III) meso -tetra[1-(1-adamantylmethyl ketone)-4-pyridyl] porphyrin tetra-bromide were employed as cathode interlayers to fabricate polymer solar cells (PSCs). The PC 71 BM ([6,6]-phenyl C 71 butyric acid methyl ester) and PCDTBT (poly[ N -9″-hepta-decanyl-2,7-carbazole- alt -5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)])-blend films were used as active layers in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The PSCs with alcohol/water-soluble porphyrins interlayer showed obviously higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) than those without interlayers. The highest PCE, 6.86%, was achieved for the device with MnCl-TPyPAdBr as an interlayer. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopic (UPS), carrier mobility, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle ( θ ) characterizations demonstrated that the porphyrin molecules can result in the formation of interfacial dipole layer between active layer and cathode. The interfacial dipole layer can obviously improve the open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) and charge extraction, and sequentially lead to the increase of PCE.

Abstract:By simply spin-coating the solvents, such as ethanol and methanol, on top of the organic active layer, the performance of polymer organic light-emitting diodes is significantly enhanced. The quantum efficiency is increased by as large as 58% for low work function Ba/Al cathode devices after solvent treatment. An interface dipole between the organic layer and the metal layer induced by the solvent, either from the intrinsic dipole or the interaction between the solvent and the cathode metal, is responsible for the device performance improvement. The interface dipole layer, which is confirmed by the Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy and the photovoltaic measurements, lifts the vacuum level on the metal side, thereby reducing the electron injection barrier at the organic/metal interface, and leading to better device performance.

Abstract:A series of water/alcohol-soluble small molecules based on electron-deficient pyridinium salts namely BTPS, BnPS and F8PS were successfully synthesized. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were thoroughly studied. Due to its good film-forming ability, F8PS was employed as a cathode interlayer in an organic photovoltaic cell. Simultaneous enhancements in open-circuit voltage (V-oc), short circuit current density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) were achieved, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was increased from 4.32% to 6.56% compared to the device based on the bare Al cathode. V-oc was significantly improved from 0.76 V to 0.94 V, and it is one of the best results reported in literature to date for polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the active layer of poly [N-9'-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT):[6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methylester (PC71BM). The greatly increased V-oc may be due to the interface dipoles generated by F8PS. It was also demonstrated that post treatment of the active layer with ethanol gave an improvement of the overall device efficiency from the initial 4.32% to 5.55%, compared to the device with the bare Al cathode. Therefore, the improvement in performance after pyridinium salt deposition may be due to a combination of the effects of ethanol treatment and the presence of the thin pyridinium salt layer. The good water/alcohol solubility, ideal HOMO/LUMO energy levels and the excellent electron transfer/collection ability of the hydrophilic pyridinium salt derivatives makes them a promising family of electron transport materials for highly efficient PSCs.

Abstract:By treating the organic/metal interface between the light emission layer and the cathode with ether solvent, the device performance of the organic light-emitting diodes with aluminum cathode is significantly improved. The maximum luminous efficiency is not only more than thirty times higher than that of the device without any ether solvent treatment, but also higher than the device with regular low work function metal cathode, such as Ba/Al. The enhanced efficiency results from the reduction of electron injection barrier, which is confirmed by the photovoltaic measurements. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study reveals that the formation of a carbide-like layer by the reaction between the thermally evaporated aluminum and the ethylene oxide functional group, -CH2CH2O-, helps the electron injection. Abstract:Active layer morphology optimization is a commonly used effective strategy to improve the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a halogen-free solvent, o-xylene (OX), was used as the host solvent, and dichloromethane (DCM) was used as the guest solvent to regulate the active layer morphology and enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PM7:IT-4F nonfullerene OSCs. With the introduction of the guest solvent DCM into the host solvent OX, the crystallization of active layer is improved, and the enlarged domain size provides a favorable channel for charge transport. The improved charge transport and suppressed carrier recombination were proven by the measurement of transient photocurrent/photovoltage, photo-induced charge extraction by linear increasing voltage, and the dependence relationship of open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density on the light illumination intensity. With the optimized volume ratio of OX and DCM, the PCE of the PM7:IT-4F OSCs improved from 10.21 to 12.74%. A Nonionic Alcohol Soluble Polymer Cathode Interlayer Enables Efficient Organic and Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The choice of interfacial materials and their properties play a critical role in determining solar cell performance and stability. For compatibility with roll-to-roll printing, it is desirable to develop stable cathode interface layers (CILs) that can be processed over the photoactive layer using orthogonal solvents. In this study, an n-type naphthalene diimide core and oligo (ethylene glycol) side-chain-based conjugated polymer is reported as a universal, efficient CIL for organic and perovskite photovoltaics. Besides good thermal stability and easy processing in alcohol/water, the new CIL is found to possess electron transport properties with an electrical conductivity of 2.3 × 10–6 S cm–1, enabling its use as a CIL with a film thickness of up to ∼35(±2) nm. Utilizing the new CIL, 16% power conversion efficiency (PCE) is achieved for organic solar cells (OSCs) based on the PM6-Y6 photoactive layer (8.9% PCE for no CIL and 15.1% with state-of-the-art CIL, PDINO), and perovskite solar cells from methylammonium lead iodide yielded a PCE of 17.6%. Compared to the reference devices, the new CIL reduced trap-assisted carrier recombination and increased the built-in potential by 80 mV, simultaneously enhancing all photovoltaic parameters. Abstract:Increasing research interests have been paid to developing efficient polymer solar cells by using integrating non-fullerene acceptors with poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), owing to the low-cost, promising performance and excellent stability. Here we systematically studied how processing solvents influence the overall performances of polymer solar cells using P3HT as the electron donor. It is very interesting to note that the devices processed with the non-halogenated solvent, 2-methylanisole in presence of 1-methylnaphthalene as solvent additive, exhibit reduced bimolecular and trap-assisted monomolecular recombination, facile charge extraction and enhanced charge carrier mobilities. Careful morphological investigation reveals that the optimizing crystallites, phase purity as well as nanofibrous structure is effective to the enhancement of charge generation and transport. It is also worth noting that these P3HT:O-IDTBR based devices processed with these non-halogenated solvents exhibitean impressive power conversion efficiency of 7.1% with a high fill factor of 75.09% on a device area of 0.05 cm2, and the efficiency remained 6.89% even in a device with large active layer area of 1 cm2, while also showing promising thermal stability. This study provides a new scope of processing P3HT based polymer solar cells by using non-halogenated solvents, which is compatible and has great promise for future applications.
Morphology control of SnO2 layer by solvent engineering for efficient perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are considered among the most promising alternatives to Si-based solar cells, owing to the ongoing rise in their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). While TiO2 has been widely used as an electron transport layer (ETL) in the n-i-p (regular) type PSCs, series of its disadvantages, including limited bulk electron mobility and photocatalytic character, restrict further improvement on the photovoltaic performance and environmental stability of devices. Therefore, SnO2 has attracted much attention as an alternative, because of its relatively low fabrication temperature, suitable energy alignment and high electron mobility. In this study, we effectively controlled the morphology of the SnO2 ETL by adding an organic solvent (ethanol) into the commercialized colloidal SnO2 precursor. This approach improved not only the wettability of the precursor on the glass substrate, but also the stability of the SnO2 colloidal dispersion. Thus, an aggregation-free SnO2 film with homogenous morphology was obtained with the assistance of ethanol, which also contributed to the improved crystal quality of the perovskite. The PSCs fabricated using ethanol-processed SnO2 exhibited a high PCE of 18.84% and improved environmental stability. Thus, our investigation provides a simple and effective approach toward achieving high-performance SnO2-based PSCs.

Structural Engineering of Porphyrin-Based Small Molecules As Donors for Efficient Organic Solar Cells.

Abstract:Porphyrin-based small molecules as donors have long been ignored in bulky heterojunction organic solar cells due to their unfavorable aggregation and the low charge mobility. With the aim of striking a delicate balance between molecular design, morphology, interfacial layer and device fabrication to maximize the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells, three comparable porphyrin-based small molecules with an acceptor-donor-acceptor configuration have been developed for use as donor materials in solution processed small molecule bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. In these molecules, electron-deficient 3-ethylrhodanine is introduced into the electron-rich porphyrin core through 5,15-bis(phenylethynyl) linkers. Structural engineering with 10,20-bis(2-hexylnonyl) aliphatic peripheral substituent on the porphyrin core, instead of the aromatic substituents such as 10,20-bis[3,5-di(dodecyloxyl)phenyl], and 10,20-bis(4-dodecyloxylphenyl), can simultaneously facilitate stronger intermolecular π-π stacking and higher charge transfer mobility in the film, leading to a maximum PCE of 7.70% in a conventional device. The inverted devices have also been demonstrated to have long-term ambient stability and a comparable PCE of 7.55%.
Anion‐Doped Thickness‐Insensitive Electron Transport Layer for Efficient Organic Solar Cell

Abstract:In organic solar cells, interfacial materials play essential roles in charge extraction, transportation, and collection. Currently, highly efficient and thickness‐insensitive interfacial materials are urgently needed in printable large area module devices. Herein, water/alcohol‐soluble conjugated polyelectrolyte PFNBT‐Br, with medium bandgap based on benzothiadiazole, are doped by two alkali metal sodium salts, NaH2PO2, Na2C2O4 with different counter anions, to pursue high efficiency and thickness‐insensitive electron‐transport layers. Results show that the doping of electron‐transport material can effectively promote the performance of the devices. Moreover, electron‐transport layers doped by these salts with different counter anions show different behaviors in performances. Among which, the salt with oxalate anion C2O42− (also named Ox2−) shows much better device performance than the salt with hypophosphite anion (H2PO2−), especially under the thick film condition (e.g., 50 nm). The greatly enhanced performances of interfacial material doped by Ox2− are due to reduced Rs between the active layer material and the electrode, reduced dark‐current, improved charge transport and extraction efficiency, and decreased charge recombination for the devices at thick‐film condition. These results demonstrated that n‐doping could be a great potential strategy for making thickness‐insensitive interfacial layers, besides, the performances can be further improved by carefully selecting salts. High-efficiency Organic Solar Cells Processed from a Halogen-Free Solvent System

Abstract:The use of non-halogenated solvents for the green manufacture of high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs) is important for their future application. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the non-halogenated solvent processed OSCs is generally lower than their halogenated counterpart due to the poor film microstructure caused by the solubility issue. Herein, we propose a halogen-free solvent system to optimize film microstructure of the photovoltaic blend based on the polymer donor D18 and small-molecule acceptor (SMA) L8-BO towards high-efficiency OSCs. The solvent system is consisted of a main solvent carbon disulfide and an additive paraxylene, where the former ensures the good solution-processability and promotes the solution aggregation of L8-BO, and the latter can finely control the phase-separation process by selectively dissolving the SMA. This solvent combination robustly produces a high-quality active layer, i.e., the bicontinuous networks of donor and acceptor with nano-sized phase-separation and strong π−π stacking. With the effective charge generation, transport and collection, the resulting device from the non-halogenated solvent system shows a high PCE of 17.50

Abstract:With the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single junction organic solar cells (OSCs) surpassing 19%, the development of active layer materials and interlayer materials with thickness-insensitive character becomes crucial for large-area device fabrication. In this study, we synthesized two in situ self-doping cathode interlayer materials, namely PBDPN-Br and PBDPVN-Br, via aldol polycondensation. Compared with PBDPN-Br, PBDPVN-Br, which incorporates ethylene bonds, exhibits enhanced planarity of the conjugated backbone, resulting in improved electron transport capability. When employed as a cathode interlayer in OSCs based on PM6:EH-HD4F, PBDPN-Br and PBDPVN-Br achieved PCEs of 17.59 and 17.89%, respectively. Notably, the PBDPVN-Br-based devices could retain 93% of the initial PCE even though the interlayer thickness was increased to 50 nm, while only 82% of the initial PCE could be retained for PBDPN-Br (50 nm)-based devices. These results highlight the success of regulating the planarity of conjugated backbones for the development of effective thickness-insensitive cathode interlayer materials. Furthermore, when PBDPVN-Br was utilized in OSCs based on the D18:BTP-eC9 active layer, a champion PCE of 18.44% could be achieved, underscoring its competitiveness as a cathode interface material for large-scale processed OSCs.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the recent progress of small molecule organic solar cells mainly based on the previous works of our group. We will mainly focus on the interfacial processes in the cells. The dissociation of excitons at electrode/organic and organic/organic interfaces can be directly observed by transient photovoltage measurements. A simple model including dissociation of excitons at the interface and drift of free carriers in the built-in field is proposed to explain the observed signals of transient photovoltage. Besides exciton-blocking and preventing damage due to cathode evaporation, blocking permeation of oxygen and/or water molecules and modulating the built-in field are proposed as functions of the buffer layer between C-60 and Al. By the use of the inverted structure, a shelf lifetime of over 1500 h is achieved for unencapsulated small-molecule organic solar cells.
New self-doping alcohol-soluble polymer PDBND-FN as cathode interface layer enables efficient organic solar cells

Abstract:Polymeric cathode interface materials that have self-doped characteristics have been widely investigated for use in organic solar cells (OSCs) to enhance the performance of the devices. Here, we designed and synthesized a new polymeric interfacial material PDBND-FN with self-doping effect. Subsequently, this novel material was successfully applied into OSCs with PTB7-Th:PC71BM as the active layer as the cathode interface layer (CIL), and the energy conversion efficiency of the device was improved from 8.53% to 9.43% compared to PFN. The self-doping properties were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance, and PDBND-FN exhibited a more obvious free radical signal, indicating that PDBND-FN has great self-doping properties. The water contact angle and surface morphology of the active layer/PDBND-FN indicate that the surface polarity and smoothness of PDBND-FN were significantly improved. Therefore, the polymer PDBND-FN with self-doped properties can be used as a new interfacial material and offer an efficacious approach for the study of OSCs.

Abstract:In organic solar cells, interfacial materials play essential roles in charge extraction, transportation, and collection. Currently, highly efficient and thickness-insensitive interfacial materials are urgently needed in printable large area module devices. Herein, water/alcohol-soluble conjugated polyelectrolyte PFNBT-Br, with medium bandgap based on benzothiadiazole, are doped by two alkali metal sodium salts, NaH2 PO2 , Na2 C2 O4 with different counter anions, to pursue high efficiency and thickness-insensitive electron-transport layers. Results show that the doping of electron-transport material can effectively promote the performance of the devices. Moreover, electron-transport layers doped by these salts with different counter anions show different behaviors in performances. Among which, the salt with oxalate anion C2 O4 2- (also named Ox2- ) shows much better device performance than the salt with hypophosphite anion (H2 PO2 - ), especially under the thick film condition (e.g., 50 nm). The greatly enhanced performances of interfacial material doped by Ox2- are due to reduced series resistance between the active layer material and the electrode, reduced dark-current, improved charge transport, and extraction efficiency, and decreased charge recombination for the devices at thick-film condition. These results demonstrated that n-doping could be a great potential strategy for making thickness-insensitive interfacial layers, besides, the performances can be further improved by carefully selecting salts.

Abstract:Charge transport, extraction, and collection play important roles in the working process of organic solar cells (OSCs), and the interface engineering is one of the key factors to realize the high-throughput printing fabrication of OSCs. The structure design or doping of electrode interlayer materials can effectively suppress the recombination of carriers at the interface and improve the ohmic contact between the active layer and the electrodes, which is a useful method to achieve a high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Poly(9,9-bis(3′-(N,N-dimethyl)-N-ethylammoniumpropyl-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene))dibromide (PFN-Br) is a widely used alcohol-soluble cathode interlayer material. By doping PFN-Br with melamine (MA), the charge extraction efficiency and nongeminate recombination at the cathode interface are successfully optimized. Finally, the device efficiencies of PM6:Y6 and PM6:BTP-eC9 are increased to an amazing 17.44% and 18.58%, respectively.
