Abstract:A series of novel water/alcohol soluble small molecular phorphyrin derivatives, Por-N, Por-NBr, For-Cu-N and Por-Cu-NBr, were designed and synthesized. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that the neutral molecules Por-N and For-Cu-N exhibited distinct melting point and crystallinity, while no observable characteristics were realized for the quaternized molecules. All these small molecules exhibited good thermal stability as evaluated by thermal gravimetric analysis. The photophysical properties of these small molecules were systematically investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy in both solutions and as thin films. It was found that the absorption spectra of For-Cu-N and For-Cu-NBr were slightly blue-shifted due to the formation of complex between porphyrin and copper. The highest occupied molecular orbitals energy levels showed negligible changes as determined by cyclic voltammetry measurements. The bulk-heterojunction solar cells utilizing these phorphyrin derivatives as the cathode interlayer and PCE10:PC71BM as the photoactive layer were fabricated. The single carrier devices revealed that the electron mobility of these phorphyrin derivatives are much higher than the hole-mobility except Por-N. Polymer solar cell devices with the structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PCE10: PC71BM/Porphyrin derivatives/A1 were fabricated to evaluate the function of cathode interlayer of these molecules. It was also worth noting that the polymer solar cell devices by using these molecules as the cathode interlayer exhibited obviously improved performances than the methanol treated device. Devices based on the molecules of Por-NBr, For-Cu-N and For-Cu-NBr as the cathode interlayer and narrow bandgap PCE10:PC71BM blend film as the photoactive layer exhibited comparatively high power conversion efficiency exceeding 9%. The best power conversion efficiency of 9.12% was achieved by the device based on For-Cu-N as the cathode inter layer, with corresponding parameters of short circuit current of 16.91 mA.cm(-2), open circuit voltage of 0.79 V and fill factor of 68.1%. These observations demonstrated that the synthesized water/alcohol soluble small molecules based on porphyrin derivatives can be prominent cathode interfacial layers for polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Three alcohol/water-soluble porphyrins (Zn-TPyPMeI:zinc(II) meso -tetra( N -methyl-4-pyridyl) porphyrin tetra-iodide, Zn-TPyPAdBr:zinc(II) meso -tetra[1-(1-adamantylmethyl ketone)-4-pyridyl] porphyrin tetra-bromide and MnCl-TPyPAdBr:man-ganese(III) meso -tetra[1-(1-adamantylmethyl ketone)-4-pyridyl] porphyrin tetra-bromide were employed as cathode interlayers to fabricate polymer solar cells (PSCs). The PC 71 BM ([6,6]-phenyl C 71 butyric acid methyl ester) and PCDTBT (poly[ N -9″-hepta-decanyl-2,7-carbazole- alt -5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)])-blend films were used as active layers in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The PSCs with alcohol/water-soluble porphyrins interlayer showed obviously higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) than those without interlayers. The highest PCE, 6.86%, was achieved for the device with MnCl-TPyPAdBr as an interlayer. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopic (UPS), carrier mobility, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle ( θ ) characterizations demonstrated that the porphyrin molecules can result in the formation of interfacial dipole layer between active layer and cathode. The interfacial dipole layer can obviously improve the open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) and charge extraction, and sequentially lead to the increase of PCE.

Abstract:Porphyrin-based small molecules as donors have long been ignored in bulky heterojunction organic solar cells due to their unfavorable aggregation and the low charge mobility. With the aim of striking a delicate balance between molecular design, morphology, interfacial layer and device fabrication to maximize the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells, three comparable porphyrin-based small molecules with an acceptor-donor-acceptor configuration have been developed for use as donor materials in solution processed small molecule bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. In these molecules, electron-deficient 3-ethylrhodanine is introduced into the electron-rich porphyrin core through 5,15-bis(phenylethynyl) linkers. Structural engineering with 10,20-bis(2-hexylnonyl) aliphatic peripheral substituent on the porphyrin core, instead of the aromatic substituents such as 10,20-bis[3,5-di(dodecyloxyl)phenyl], and 10,20-bis(4-dodecyloxylphenyl), can simultaneously facilitate stronger intermolecular π-π stacking and higher charge transfer mobility in the film, leading to a maximum PCE of 7.70% in a conventional device. The inverted devices have also been demonstrated to have long-term ambient stability and a comparable PCE of 7.55%.

Abstract:In this work, in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were used to investigate the working mechanism of an alcohol-/water-soluble conjugated polymer poly [(9,9-bis(3′-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9–dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) as the cathode interfacial layer in organic solar cells from the view of interfacial energy level alignment. Fullerene (C60) was chosen as the model acceptor material in contact with PFN as well as two other cathode interfacial layers ZnO and TiO2 in the configuration of an inverted solar cell structure. Significant charge transfer between PFN modified ITO (indium tin oxide) electrode and C60 is observed due to the low work function of PFN. This results in the Fermi level of the substrate pinned very close to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of C60 as well as an additional electric field at the cathode/acceptor interface. Both of them facilitate the electron extraction from the acceptor C60 to the ITO cathode, as confirmed by the electrical measurements of the electron-only devices with PFN modification. The better electron extraction originated from the Fermi level pinning and the additional interface electric field are believed to contribute to the efficiency enhancement of the inverted organic solar cells employing PFN as cathode interfacial layer.
Increased Electron Transport and Hole Blocking in an Aqueous Solution Processed Dye-Doped ZnO Cathode Interlayer for High Performance Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:In this work, we report high electron transport and hole blocking capability of hybrid photoconductive interlayer materials manufactured from an aqueous solution, which are achieved by doping perylene bisimide dyes into zinc oxide (ZnO) through the formation of ionic bonding between the organic dopants and the inorganic matrix. Benzenesulfonic acid functional groups are introduced to perylene bisimide dye molecules, which enhance the solubility of the dye molecules in water and form ionic bonds with zinc atoms during the fabrication of the hybrid thin films. The ionic bonding assisted molecular dispersion endows the hybrid thin film with full photoconductive properties, which improves electron transport by photo induced electron transfer from organic dye molecules to the conduction band of ZnO. Especially, the hole blocking ability is also highly increased. Both increased electron transport and hole blocking are benefits to the charge selectivity of the cathode interlayer, which results in a high fill factor in organic solar cells. A power conversion efficiency of up to 15.4% is achieved on the basis of such an aqueous solution processed hybrid interlayer when using PM6:Y6 as the active layer. In addition, the optimized thermal annealing temperature for the fabrication of the hybrid thin film is as low as 150 degrees C, which is a benefit for the application of such photoconductive materials in flexible devices.
Π -Conjugated Donor–acceptor Porphyrin Copolymers for Organic Photovoltaics

Abstract:Conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) molecular structures play a very important role in the significant progress of organic photovotaics. However, the reports on conjugated D-A porphyrin polymers for organic solar cells are very limited. In this work, five conjugated D-A porphyrin copolymers PEZPEBTA(C-12), PEZPEBT, PEZPEBT(ff), PEZPETPD(O), and PEZPETDPPT(O) were synthesized by Sonagashira coupling of a porphyrin donor unit with five typical acceptor units 2-dodecyl-2H-benzotriazole, benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole, 5,6-difluoro-benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole, 5-octyl-thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione, and 3,6-bis-(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-dioctyl-2,5-dihydro-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione linked by ethynylene linkages, respectively. They possess excellent thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of around 400 degrees C. All absorption spectra of the copolymers were significantly red shifted with enhanced Q bands at the near-infrared region both in solutions and in films due to the simultaneous introduction of ethynylene linkages and acceptor units, which make the polymer main chains coplanar and pi-conjugated and enhance the intramolecular charge transfer. PEZPEBT and PEZPEBT(ff) are electrochemically active in both the oxidation and reduction regions, while PEZPEBTA(C-12), PEZPETPD(O), and PEZPETDPPT(O) show only oxidation peaks. Power conversion efficiencies of 0.12%, 0.41%, 0.26%, 0.19%, and 0.41% were achieved for the polymer solar cells based on PEZPEBTA(C12), PEZPEBT, PEZPEBTff, PEZPETPD(O), and PEZPETDPPT(O), respectively, under AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm(2) with methanofullerene [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) (1:2, w/w) as the active layer in the presence of 3% pyridine. Abstract:Abstract In organic solar cells (OSCs), cathode interfacial materials are generally designed with highly polar groups to increase the capability of lowering the work function of cathode. However, the strong polar group could result in a high surface energy and poor physical contact at the active layer surface, posing a challenge for interlayer engineering to address the trade-off between device stability and efficiency. Herein, we report a hydrogen-bonding interfacial material, aliphatic amine-functionalized perylene-diimide (PDINN), which simultaneously down-shifts the work function of the air stable cathodes (silver and copper), and maintains good interfacial contact with the active layer. The OSCs based on PDINN engineered silver-cathode demonstrate a high power conversion efficiency of 17.23% (certified value 16.77% by NREL) and high stability. Our results indicate that PDINN is an effective cathode interfacial material and interlayer engineering via suitable intermolecular interactions is a feasible approach to improve device performance of OSCs.

Abstract:A series of water/alcohol-soluble small molecules based on electron-deficient pyridinium salts namely BTPS, BnPS and F8PS were successfully synthesized. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were thoroughly studied. Due to its good film-forming ability, F8PS was employed as a cathode interlayer in an organic photovoltaic cell. Simultaneous enhancements in open-circuit voltage (V-oc), short circuit current density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) were achieved, and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was increased from 4.32% to 6.56% compared to the device based on the bare Al cathode. V-oc was significantly improved from 0.76 V to 0.94 V, and it is one of the best results reported in literature to date for polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the active layer of poly [N-9'-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT):[6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methylester (PC71BM). The greatly increased V-oc may be due to the interface dipoles generated by F8PS. It was also demonstrated that post treatment of the active layer with ethanol gave an improvement of the overall device efficiency from the initial 4.32% to 5.55%, compared to the device with the bare Al cathode. Therefore, the improvement in performance after pyridinium salt deposition may be due to a combination of the effects of ethanol treatment and the presence of the thin pyridinium salt layer. The good water/alcohol solubility, ideal HOMO/LUMO energy levels and the excellent electron transfer/collection ability of the hydrophilic pyridinium salt derivatives makes them a promising family of electron transport materials for highly efficient PSCs.

Abstract:An efficient organic photovoltaics (OPVs) fabricated by using benzofuran-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-oligothiophene-3,6-bis(5-(benzofuran-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-bis (2-ethylhexyl) pyrrolo[3,4-c] pyrrole-1,4-dione (DPP(TBFu)(2)) blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) as the bulk heterojunction composite and a conjugated polyelectrolyte as the electron extraction layer in the inverted device structure is reported. Improved fill factor (FF) but reduced short-circuit current density were obtained from DPP(TBFu)(2):PC61BM-based OPVs processed from chloroform solution with small percentage of solvent processing additive, 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO). The investigation by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and resonant soft X-ray scattering indicated that the large phase separation in the thin film of DPP(TBFu)(2):PC61BM BHJ composite was induced by DIO, which results in decreased J(SC).
Lending Triarylphosphine Oxide to Phenanthroline: a Facile Approach to High‐Performance Organic Small‐Molecule Cathode Interfacial Material for Organic Photovoltaics Utilizing Air‐Stable Cathodes

Abstract:Cathode interfacial material (CIM) is critical to improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long‐term stability of an organic photovoltaic cell that utilizes a high work function cathode. In this contribution, a novel CIM is reported through an effective and yet simple combination of triarylphosphine oxide with a 1,10‐phenanthrolinyl unit. The resulting CIM possesses easy synthesis and purification, a high T g of 116 °C and attractive electron‐transport properties. The characterization of photovoltaic devices involving Ag or Al cathodes shows that this thermally deposited interlayer can considerably improve the PCE, due largely to a simultaneous increase in V oc and FF relative to the reference devices without a CIM. Notably, a PCE of 7.51% is obtained for the CIM/Ag device utilizing the active layer PTB7:PC71BM, which far exceeds that of the reference Ag device and compares well to that of the Ca/Al device. The PCE is further increased to 8.56% for the CIM/Al device (with J sc = 16.81 mA cm−2, V oc = 0.75 V, FF = 0.68). Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy studies reveal that this promising CIM can significantly lower the work function of the Ag metal as well as ITO and HOPG, and facilitate electron extraction in OPV devices.
A Series of Porphyrins As Interfacial Materials for Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Interface materials can improve the photovoltaic performance of the hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a series of porphyrin derivatives (metalloporphyrins: MTPPS4, M = Zn2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+; free base porphyrin: TPPS4) were developed to act as interfacial materials in PSCs. The introduction of porphyrin interlayers between PEDOT:PSS and perovskite layer in the inverted PSCs not only made energy level more matching but also improved the quality of the perovskite layer. Compared with the control device without an interlayer, the maximum power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of devices with the interlayers (in the order of ZnTPP4, CuTPP4, CoTPP4, NiTPP4 and TPP4) were increased by 23%, 25%, 21%, 17% and 13%, respectively. The highest PCE of 14.61% was based on the CuTPPS4-modified device. The porphyrins acted as the interlayers to promote carrier transport and reduce charge recombination at the interface, resulting in the increase of opencircuit voltage (V-OC), short-circuit current density (J(SC)) and fill factor (FF).

Abstract:A π-conjugated ionized porphyrin 5,15-bis(3-acetenyl-pyridine ethyl ammonium bromide)-10,20-bis(5-(2-butyloctyl)-thienyl)-porphyrin zinc (II) (m-PYBrZnPor) is developed as cathode buffer layers (CBLs) to modify the interfaces between Ag cathode and PCBM ([6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester) of fullerene/perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) planar heterojunction solar cells (PSCs). m-PYBrZnPor is soluble in ethanol, and therefore can be spin-coated on the PCBM layer conveniently via solution processing as CBLs without corroding the under-layers of PCBM when we fabricate the devices. Furthermore, this simple modification of the cathode/PCBM interfaces by m-PYBrZnPor can remarkably enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 17.5% with simultaneously enhanced open circuit voltage, short circuit current and fill factor values even compared with those of the devices with bathocuproine (BCP) CBLs, which are contributed by the suppressed leakage current, reduced recombination losses and reduced work function induced by the porphyrin CBLs.

Abstract:A star-shaped electron acceptor based on porphyrin as a core and perylene bisimide as end groups was constructed for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells. The new conjugated molecule exhibits aligned energy levels, good electron mobility, and complementary absorption with a donor polymer. These advantages facilitate a high power conversion efficiency of 7.4% in non-fullerene solar cells, which represents the highest photovoltaic performance based on porphyrin derivatives as the acceptor.

Abstract:The hole-transporting layer (HTL), a pivotal component of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), can significantly improve device performance. The unique light-harvesting and charge-transport capabilities of porphyrin derivatives have facilitated their adoption in solar cell applications, showcasing their potential as hole-transporting materials for PSCs. This study introduces an electrochemical polymerization method to deposit thin films of three distinct porphyrins as HTLs in PSCs. These polymerized films demonstrate exceptional thermal stability, with nickel-centered porphyrin films highly enhancing the power conversion efficiency, attributed to optimal energetic alignment and effective contact properties. Crucially, devices utilizing this approach exhibit outstanding long-term stability, maintaining 88% of their initial efficiency after 2200-hour storage under ambient conditions. This performance highlights the considerable promise of porphyrin-based materials in photovoltaic applications, suggesting that electrochemical polymerization could lead the way in developing efficient and durable PSCs. Abstract:To mimic the natural photosynthetic systems utilizing chlorophylls to absorb light and store light energy, two new porphyrin-based small molecules of PTTR and PTTCNR have been developed for photovoltaic applications. The highest power conversion efficiency of 8.21% is achieved, corresponding to a short-circuit current of 14.30 mA cm-2, open-circuit voltage of 0.82 V, and fill factor of 70.01%. The excellent device performances can be ascribed to the engineering of molecule structure and film morphology. The horizontal conjugation of 3,3″-dihexyl-terthiophene to porphyrin-core with the vertical aliphatic 2-octylundecyl peripheral substitutions, can not only effectively increase the solar flux coverage between the conventional Soret and Q bands of porphyrin unit, but also optimize molecular packing through polymorphism associated with side-chains and the linear π-conjugated backbones. And the additive of 1,8-diiodooctane and subsequent chloroform solvent vapor annealing facilitate the formation of the blend films with [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) characteristics of bicontinuous, interpenetrating networks required for efficient charge separation and transportation.

Abstract:The electron transport layer ETL is essential for achieving high performance and stability of organic solar cells. However, most organic ETLs suffer from low conductivity, low electron mobility, and difficult modification, resulting in mitigation of charge collection and transport. Metal‐organic complex, such as ferrocene, is a promising candidate to improve organic ETL due to their excellent film‐forming property, easy preparation, and high electrical properties. In this work, we designed a small molecule, PDIN‐Fc, based on PDIN modified by ferrocene, which can be synthesized by environmentally friendly esterification and quaternization reactions. PDIN‐Fc displayed outstanding alcohol solubility and tunable work function. Interestingly, introducing the ferrocene group can lead to increased self‐doping of PDIN‐Fc. As a result, PDIN‐Fc showed significantly improved charge transport performance and conductivity compared to PDIN. When using PM6:L8‐BO as the photoactive layer, the OSCs with PDIN‐Fc as ETL achieved a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 18.45% and exhibited notable high light stability. This study demonstrates an effective strategy to design efficient ETLs by incorporating metal complexes, which enable thickness insensitivity, good stability, and high‐performance photovoltaic devices.
