Abstract:A high-speed spectrum demodulation method with a large dynamic range for fiber-optic Fabry–Perot sensor is presented. The demodulation system only consists of a near-infrared distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, a fiber circulator, a photodetector and a signal processing circuit. By quickly cyclically setting the grating current and phase current of the DBR laser, the laser wavelength is scanned with a repetition frequency of 2 kHz. The signal processing circuit controls the current of the laser and performs spectrum demodulation simultaneously. Spectral demodulation mainly includes normalization of interference spectrum, fast Fourier transform, phase estimation and cavity length calculation. The displacement stage and piezoelectric ceramics were used to remove the static cavity length and dynamic cavity length of the Fabry–Perot cavity. Experimental results show that the demodulation resolution reaches 0.15 nm. Benefiting from the high spectral detection resolution, a large demodulation range is achieved to be 0.3–13 mm. Compared with the demodulation systems based on spectrum modules, this solution significantly reduces the cost, simplifies the algorithm and improves the dynamic range.

Abstract:A novel and simple two-frequency Brillouin fiber laser is presented. It is based on a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity with fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors. The model of stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber grating-based Fabry-Perot resonator is investigated. The laser allows conversion efficiency of close to 100% and suppresses the higher-order Stokes waves. The theoretical prediction is presented and the experimental demonstration is realized.

Abstract:A high speed quasi-distributed demodulation method based on the microwave photonics and the chromatic dispersion effect is designed and implemented for weak fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Due to the effect of dispersion compensation fiber (DCF), FBG wavelength shift leads to the change of the difference frequency signal at the mixer. With the way of crossing microwave sweep cycle, all wavelengths of cascade FBGs can be high speed obtained by measuring the frequencies change. Moreover, through the introduction of Chirp-Z and Hanning window algorithm, the analysis of difference frequency signal is achieved very well. By adopting the single-peak filter as a reference, the length disturbance of DCF caused by temperature can be also eliminated. Therefore, the accuracy of this novel method is greatly improved, and high speed demodulation of FBGs can easily realize. The feasibility and performance are experimentally demonstrated using 105 FBGs with 0.1% reflectivity, 1 m spatial interval. Results show that each grating can be distinguished well, and the demodulation rate is as high as 40 kHz, the accuracy is about 8 pm.

Abstract:A distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser based on a 32-mm long pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating inscribed using the femtosecond point-by-point technique in a single-mode erbium-doped optical fiber (CorActive EDF-L 1500) is demonstrated. The lasing power of the DFB laser reaches 0.7 mW at a wavelength of 1550 nm when pumped with a laser diode at a wavelength of 976 nm and power of 525 mW. The width of the lasing spectrum is 17 kHz. It is shown that the pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating fs-inscribed in a non-PM fiber provides the selection of the single polarization mode of the DFB laser. DFB laser formation in a highly doped non-photosensitive optical fiber (CoreActive SCF-ER60-8/125-12) is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Conventional grating-inscription technology usually inscribes only one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in the core of an optical fiber. A novel femtosecond laser point-by-point technology was demonstrated to parallel-inscribe multiple FBGs, i.e., so-called parallel-integrated FBGs (PI-FBGs), with either different or the same reflection wavelengths in the core of a standard single-mode fiber. Single- or multiwavelength PI-FBGs exhibited one or multiple peaks in the reflection spectrum, respectively. The length of PI-FBGs can be shortened to hundreds of micrometers to increase the spatial resolution of the FBG-based sensors. Our ultrashort PI-FBGs with a length of 500 m could be used to realize ultrahigh temperature sensing with a high spatial resolution of less than 1mm, a linear sensitivity of 15.0pmC, and a large measurement range of up to 1100C, which overcomes the shortcomings of conventional FBG-based sensors with a low spatial resolution of more than 1 cm and a small measurement range of up to 300C. Moreover, the grating parameters, such as reflectivity, reflection wavelength, polarization-dependent loss, and full width at half maximum, can be improved to achieve desired PI-FBGs by changing the spatial distribution and grating number of the PI-FBGs. The PI-FBGs are insensitive to bending, which reduces bend-induced measurement errors. Therefore, our PI-FBGs will find potential applications in the fields of optical fiber sensors, communications, and lasers.

Abstract:<p>A narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber laser based on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) fabricated was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A pair of FBGs with reflectivity of 92% and 10%, respectively, at the center wavelength of 1580 nm were inscribed in standard SMF-28 fibers without hydrogen loading by femtosecond laser point-by-point directly writing method, which was used as mirrors for wavelength selection of fiber laser, gratings full width at half maximum (FWHM) was less than 0.15 nm. A simple linear-cavity fiber laser was realized based on gain medium, pump source and FBGs. When gain medium of Er-doped fiber is selected 8 m, a stable single wavelength of 1579 nm laser with a 3 dB linewidth of 0.06 nm was obtained. Its output power is 24.1 mW when the maximum pump power is 600 mA, and its single wavelength of 1579 nm is consistent with the central wavelength of the fabricated FBGs. This type of laser source shows real promise for applications in coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry and high resolution fiber sensor systems.</p>

Abstract:We present the first demonstration of a 1550 nm multi-wavelength distributed feedback (MW-DFB) laser employing a third-order, four-phase-shifted sampled sidewall grating. By utilizing linearly chirped sampled gratings and incorporating multiple true {\pi}-phase shifts within the cavity, we achieved and experimentally validated a four-wavelength laser with a channel spacing of 0.4 nm. The device operates stably and uniformly across a wide range of injection currents from 280 mA to 350 mA. The average wavelength spacing was measured at 0.401 nm with a standard deviation of 0.0081 nm. Additionally, we demonstrated a 0.3 nm MW-DFB laser with a seven-channel output, achieving a wavelength spacing of 0.274 nm and a standard deviation of 0.0055 nm. This MW-DFB laser features a ridge waveguide with sidewall gratings, requiring only one metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) step and a single III-V material etching process. This streamlined fabrication approach simplifies device manufacturing and is well-suited for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the inscription of fiber Bragg gratings by using femtosecond (fs) laser point-by-point (PbP) technology. The effects of the focusing geometry, grating order, laser energy and grating length on the spectral characteristics of the PbP FBG were investigated. After optimizing these parameters, a high-quality first-order PbP FBG with a reflectivity > 99.9% (i.e., Bragg resonance attenuation of 37.7 dB) and insertion loss (IL) of 0.03 dB was successfully created. Moreover, taking advantage of the excellent flexibility of the fs laser PbP technology, high-quality FBGs with various Bragg wavelengths ranging from 856 to 1902.6 nm were inscribed. Furthermore, wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) FBG arrays consisting of 10 FBGs were rapidly constructed. Additionally, a Fabry-Perot cavity was realized by using two high-quality FBGs, and its birefringence could be reduced from 3.04 × 10−5 to 1.77 × 10−6 by using a slit beam shaping-assisted femtosecond laser PbP technology. Therefore, such high-quality FBGs are promising to improve the performance of optical fiber sensors, lasers and communication devices.

Abstract:Fourier domain mode-locked lasers are excellent wavelength-swept sources for high-speed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) demodulation. When the lasers are applied for remote FBG sensing, the transmission delay could make the sensing signal deviating significantly from its real position due to the short sweep period of the lasers, which can cause large wavelength demodulation error. An autocalibration method for compensating the delay is proposed by inserting a Fabry-Perot etalon with a wavelength marker into the reference optical path. Besides, the wavelength sweeping nonlinearity can be real-time monitored via the multiple combs of the Fabry-Perot etalon and absolute wavelength of FBG can be derived using interpolation algorithm. Experimental results show that this demodulation method is efficient and accurate.
Frequency-sweeping single-frequency polarization-maintaining Er-doped fiber laser for FMCW lidar

Abstract:Frequency-sweeping lasers have drawn considerable attentions, especially in FMCW LIDAR. The frequency sweeping single-frequency PM fiber laser is respectively realized by piezoelectric (PZT) modulation and pump modulation, which using the same Er-doped distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) fiber cavity. The central wavelength is 1552.49 nm with the extinction ratio of above 20 dB. The frequency sweeping range of PZT modulation is seen to be up to 745 MHz under the modulation repetition rate of 1Hz, and the modulation repetition rate of the pump can be tuned from 1Hz to 20 kHz. However, the frequency sweeping range and tunable range of pump modulation is 635 MHz and from 1Hz to 10 kHz, respectively. Comparing with both methods, the PZT modulation has wider sweeping range and tunable range, however, the mechanical resonance will be occurred. The pump modulation indicates virtually linearly frequency modulation. Future works to achieve more characteristic of two modulation methods are undergoing.
Multi-channel Wavelength-Swept DFB Laser Array Based on REC Technique

Abstract:Wavelength-swept laser is one of the most critical common components of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. However, a fast, stable, integrated and low-cost multi-channel wavelength-swept laser array is still unavailable. In this article, a multi-channel simultaneous wavelength-swept DFB laser array based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique is proposed and manufactured. The REC technology simplifies the fabrication process and greatly reduces the cost of the laser. The laser array contains 4 lasers in parallel with integrated heating resistance for thermal tuning to broaden the wavelength-tuning range. Each single-wavelength DFB laser introduces a π-phase shift structure, which is used to improve the single-mode performance of the laser. Meanwhile, the active multiplexer responsible for coupling and an optical amplifier (SOA) responsible for compensating the coupling loss of the laser are also integrated on the same chip. The driving circuits of the laser use FPGA to control the DAC chip to obtain precise current output and realizes continuous linear output of wavelength by changing the injection current size. The packaged laser module can realize a continuous wavelength-swept range of 2.4 nm per channel with the SMSR over 40 dB, achieving a simultaneous sweep of four channels with good scanning linearity and scanning speed. The work of this paper realizes the integration of linear wavelength-swept light sources, which creates the conditions for a low-cost, small-volume multi-channel sensing system in the future.

Abstract:A fast and wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) utilizing the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique, integrated with 24 DFB lasers, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Additionally, a high-speed FBG sensing system using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is proposed and demonstrated, achieving stable high-speed sweeping with a wavelength coverage of 50.4 nm and a sweeping frequency of up to 5.85 kHz without mode hopping. The FBG sensing system has a solid-state design without moving parts, enabling real-time, high-speed, and stable monitoring of temperature, pressure, strain, and displacement. Furthermore, the system is cost-effective and anticipated to have diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-linewidth high-order-mode (HOM) Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and distributed Rayleigh random feedback in a half-open linear cavity. The single-mode operation of the laser radiation with sub-kilohertz linewidth is achieved thanks to distributed Brillouin amplification and Rayleigh scattering along kilometer-long single mode fibers whilst a few mode fiber-based LPFGs enable the transverse mode conversion among a broadband wavelength range. Meanwhile, a dynamic fiber grating (DFG) is embedded and incorporated to manipulate and purify the random modes, which hence suppresses the frequency drift resulting from random mode hopping. Consequently, the random laser emission with either high-order scalar or vector modes can be generated with a high laser efficiency of 25.5% and an ultra-narrow 3-dB linewidth of 230 Hz. Furthermore, the dependence of the laser efficiency and frequency stability on the gain fiber length are also experimentally investigated. It is believed that our approach could provide a promising platform for a wide range of applications such as coherent optical communication, high-resolution imaging, highly sensitive sensing, etc.

Abstract:We present a four-channel ultrafast wavelength-swept distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser array based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique using instantaneous injection current modulation. With the aid of our designed laser driving circuit system consists of the microcontroller unit (MCU), field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and negative metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (n-MOSFETs), the precise pulse driving current for the 4-channel wavelength-swept REC-DFB laser array can be generated and a fast tuning of 16.424 nm within 10 μs is achieved. To further investigate the tuning performance of the proposed wavelength-swept laser source, we then applied it to the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation system and four FBG temperature sensor arrays were successfully demodulated. The development of high-efficient optical sensing systems heavily relies on the significance of the ultrafast wavelength-swept laser source, which has the potential to greatly enhance FBG interrogator performance in the future.

Abstract:In this work, long high-quality fiber Bragg gratings with phase shifts in the structure are inscribed directly in the optical fiber by point-by-point technique using femtosecond laser pulses. Phase shifts are introduced during the inscription process with a piezoelectric actuator, which rapidly shifts the fiber along the direction of its movement in a chosen point of the grating with a chosen shift value. As examples, single and double π phase shifts are introduced in fiber Bragg gratings with a length up to 34 mm in passive fibers, which provide corresponding transmission peaks with bandwidth less than 1 pm. It is shown that 37 mm π -phase-shifted grating inscribed in an active Er-doped fiber forms high-quality DFB laser cavity generating single-frequency radiation at 1550 nm with bandwidth of 20 kHz and signal-to-noise ratio of >70 dB. The inscription technique has a high degree of performance and flexibility and can be easily implemented in fibers of various types.

Abstract:An amplified feedback DFB laser with extended modulation bandwidth is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. All the three sections of laser cavity, including DFB section, phase section and amplified feedback section, have the same active layer, which can avoid the butt-joint re-growth process. The gratings in both DFB section and amplified feedback section are fabricated by the Reconstruction Equivalent Chirp technique, which can significantly decrease the difficulties in realizing precise grating structure. An enhanced -3 dB bandwidth of 19 GHz is realized by means of a normal low-frequency wafer. 16-QAM signals with the rate of 30 MSymbol/s and the center frequency of 15 GHz are transmitted via 10 km radio-over-fiber link employing the as-fabricated directly modulated DFB laser, and the average error vector magnitude of the whole link is 4.38%.

Abstract:We demonstrate a polarization-maintaining (PM) dual-wavelength (DW) single-frequency Er-doped distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) fiber laser with 28 GHz stable frequency difference. A homemade PM low-reflectivity superimposed fiber Bragg grating (SFBG) is employed as the output port of the DBR fiber laser. The SFBG has two reflection wavelengths located in the same grating region. The reflectivity of both DWs is around 85%. The achieved linear polarization extinction ratio is more than 20 dB. The DWs of the laser output are located at 1552.2 nm and 1552.43 nm, respectively. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is above 60 dB. For each wavelength, only one longitudinal mode exists. The beat frequency of the two longitudinal modes is measured to be 28.4474 GHz, with the SNR of more than 65 dB and the linewidth less than 300 Hz. During a 60-min-long measurement, the standard deviation of the frequency fluctuation is 58.592 kHz.
Optimization of sweeping nonlinearity of wavelength-swept laser and its application in FBG demodulation

Abstract:To explore the physical mechanism of sweeping nonlinearity of a Fabry-Perot(F-P)tunable filter based on a PZT and to obtain the optimized scheme for the characteristics of linear wavelength sweeping,a wavelength-swept laser based on the F-P tunable filter was developed.The transmission time domain method was used to research the output nonlinearity of the wavelength-swept laser and the changed sweeping nonlinear characteristics in different sweeping frequencies were obtained.Then,it points out the change is caused by capacitive load characteristics of the PZT from the actuator in the tunable filter.With spectroscopy,the relationship among dynamical sweeping nonlinearity,sweeping range and driving frequency was obtained and it is in good agreement with that of the theoretical analysis.Finally,a new drive scheme based on a voltage follower was proposed to optimize the characteristics of linear wavelength sweeping.The experimental results show that this method promotes the linear responsibility of high-speed wavelength-sweeping.The scheme is applied in FBG interrogation system andobtained demodulation nonlinearity is 0.998 44 at a wavelength-swept speed of 1 000 Hz.
