Abstract:Three-dimensional geometrical models with incorporated surface temperature data provide important information for various applications such as medical imaging, energy auditing, and intelligent robots. In this paper we present a robust method for mobile and real-time 3D thermographic reconstruction through depth and thermal sensor fusion. A multimodal imaging device consisting of a thermal camera and a RGB-D sensor is calibrated geometrically and used for data capturing. Based on the underlying principle that temperature information remains robust against illumination and viewpoint changes, we present a Thermal-guided Iterative Closest Point (T-ICP) methodology to facilitate reliable 3D thermal scanning applications. The pose of sensing device is initially estimated using correspondences found through maximizing the thermal consistency between consecutive infrared images. The coarse pose estimate is further refined by finding the motion parameters that minimize a combined geometric and thermographic loss function. Experimental results demonstrate that complimentary information captured by multimodal sensors can be utilized to improve performance of 3D thermographic reconstruction. Through effective fusion of thermal and depth data, the proposed approach generates more accurate 3D thermal models using significantly less scanning data.

Abstract:In recent years, infrared imaging technology has been widely used to capture valuable thermal information of target objects for various applications such as construction engineering, advanced manufacturing, and medical diagnosis. However, it still remains a challenging task to visualize the invisible thermal information of three-dimensional objects for further evaluation and decision making. In this paper, we build a multi-sensor system consisting of a long-wave infrared camera, a RGBD camera, and a digital projector for multimodal data acquisition, real-time 3D thermographic reconstruction, and projector-based spatial augmented reality. We propose a hybrid method that combines the benefits of model-based ray casting and frame-based image warping to generate high-quality projected images with complete view coverage and abundant thermal details for visualizing the invisible thermal information on 3D objects. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated for two typical thermal imaging applications including human body temperature monitoring and non-destructive evaluation of composite materials.
Depth-based removal of thermal reflection with the light-field theory

Abstract:Thermal imaging is a useful imaging technique in many scenarios. It can capture the temperature distribution of scenes in the dark and see through sparse smoke and dust. However, some surfaces such as steel and glass with high reflectivity lead to a reflection problem in thermal imaging, while heavy mist and gases lead to the occlusion problem. We proposed an efficient algorithm to solve the occlusion problem in our earlier work. The reflection in thermal images causes errors in detection and temperature measurement. Therefore, the precise model and efficient algorithms to solve this problem are in high demand. In this paper, we mainly model the reflection problem in thermal imaging and propose an algorithm to deal with it. In our experiments, a thermal camera array is built to capture the thermal light-field images. We first separate a part of the reflection pixels from thermal images based on the depth information. After that, the thermal reflection is removed by optimizing a designed cost function. The experiment results show that our reflection removal method can separate the thermal reflection with high precision, retain the objects in the scene, and get better performance than existing methods. Abstract:Thermal emissivity is one of the most important indices used to evaluate thermal emission capability of an object and is essential for characterization of thermal emitters, especially in the field of infrared thermal emission engineering for various applications, including personal thermal management, radiative cooling and heat preservation, infrared stealth, and infrared encryption. However, due to the natural background thermal emissions from the ambient environment and experimental setup, conventional methods generally ignore the background emissions while keeping the temperature of the radiating sample significantly higher than the ambient temperature. Here, we introduce a simple method that enables accurate measurement of emissivity of a given sample without necessitating high temperature through elimination of background emission noise by the difference of the measured emission signals of the sample at two different temperatures.

Abstract:The fusion of three-dimensional (3D) geometrical and two-dimensional (2D) thermal information provides a promising method for characterizing temperature distribution of 3D objects, extending infrared imaging from 2D to 3D to support various thermal inspection applications. In this paper, we present an effective on-the-fly calibration approach for accurate alignment of depth and thermal data to facilitate dynamic and fast-speed 3D thermal scanning tasks. For each pair of depth and thermal frames, we estimate their relative pose by minimizing the objective function that measures the temperature consistency between a 2D infrared image and the reference 3D thermographic model. Our proposed frame-to-model mapping scheme can be seamlessly integrated into a generic 3D thermographic reconstruction framework. Through graphics-processing-unit-based acceleration, our method requires less than 10 ms to generate a pair of well-aligned depth and thermal images without hardware synchronization and improves the robustness of the system against significant camera motion. Abstract:Photoacoustic measurement techniques can be used to determine thermal properties on and below the sample's surface, thus subsurface thermal inhomogeneities, such as continuous profiles of thermal parameters, become measurable by photoacoustic methods. In this paper, the study is focused on the quantitative characterization of material modifications in subsurface layers of laser-hardened Al alloy samples. The variation of surface temperature is measured by PA technique. Then a new numerical algorithm, carried out by employing the pulsed spectrum technique and the regularization method, is used to reconstruct thermal conductivity depth profiles, The experiment results demonstrate that the experiment and the algorithm are very effective for microstructure depth profile reconstruction by nondestructive method.

Abstract:Contactless thermal imaging generally relies on mid-infrared cameras and fluorescence imaging with temperature-sensitive phosphors. Fluorescent thermometry in the near-infrared (NIR) region is an emerging technique for analysing deep biological tissues but still requires observation depth calibration. We present an NIR fluorescence time-gated imaging (TGI) thermometry technology based on fluorescence lifetime, an intrinsic fluorophore time constant unrelated to observation depth. Fluorophore used is NaYF4 co-doped with Nd3+ and Yb3+ that emits fluorescence at 1000 nm. An agarose gel-based phantom with the fluorophore embedded at a 5-mm depth was covered by sheets of meat to vary the observation depth. The temperature was determined independently from depth by sequences of NIR fluorescence decay images, and the rate of change in the fluorescence lifetime per temperature was almost constant (-0.0092 ~ -0.010 °C-1) at depths ranging from 0 to 1.4 mm of meat, providing non-contact and absolute measurements of temperature in deep biological tissues.

Abstract:Abstract Medical treatments such as high-intensity focused ultrasound, hyperthermic laser lipolysis or radiofrequency are employed as a minimally invasive alternatives for targeted tissue therapies. The increased temperature of the tissue triggers various thermal effects and leads to an unavoidable damage. As targeted tissues are generally located below the surface, various approaches are utilized to prevent skin layers from overheating and irreparable thermal damages. These procedures are often accompanied by cooling systems and protective layers accounting for a non-trivial detection of the subsurface temperature peak. Here, we show a temperature peak estimation method based on infrared thermography recording of the surface temperature evolution coupled with a thermal-diffusion-based model and a time-dependent data matching algorithm. The performance of the newly developed method was further showcased by employing hyperthermic laser lipolysis on an ex-vivo porcine fat tissue. Deviations of the estimated peak temperature remained below 1 °C, as validated by simultaneous measurement of depth temperature field within the tissue. Reconstruction of the depth profile shows a good reproducibility of the real temperature distribution with a small deviation of the peak temperature position. A thermal camera in combination with the time-dependent matching bears the scope for non-contact monitoring of the depth temperature profile as fast as 30 s. The latest demand for miniaturization of thermal cameras provides the possibility to embed the model in portable thermal scanners or medical laser technologies for improving safety and efficiency.

Abstract:Thermal emission is the radiation of electromagnetic waves from hot objects. The promise of thermal-emission engineering for applications in energy harvesting, radiative cooling, and thermal camouflage has recently led to renewed research interest in this topic. However, accurate and precise measurements of thermal emission in a laboratory setting can be challenging in part due to the presence of background emission from the surrounding environment and the measurement instrument itself. This problem is especially acute for thermal emitters that have unconventional temperature dependence, operate at low temperatures, or are out of equilibrium. In this paper, general procedures are described, recommended, and demonstrated for thermal-emission measurements that can accommodate such unconventional thermal emitters.

Abstract:Reported in this paper is that about the depth profile reconstruction of thermal relaxation time based on the hyperbolic heat conduction equation in frequency domain. By employing the pulse spectrum technique and regularization method, an algorithm for performing the inversion of the thermal parameter can be established. The numerical simulations on the depth profile reconstruction of the thermal relaxation time for inhomogeneous solid sample have been performed from surface photothermal signals. The results demonstrate that the algorithm is effective and stable even under the condition of noise disturbance.

Abstract:Active three-dimensional(3-D) thermography combines 3-D shape and active thermography. Thus, it enables the provision of the intuitive thermographic inspection results for composite parts with a complex geometry. However, conventional 3-D thermography acquires thermographic information and 3-D shape through at least two independent sensors and requires complex cross-modal image registration algorithm based on the keypoint detection and matching. In this article, an active 3-D thermography system is proposed using only one thermal camera for moving objects. This system does not require an independent 3-D sensor while the thermal camera acts as the 3-D sensor. Nature behind that is that a mathematical model is proposed to unify the line scanning thermography and laser triangulation in the dynamic scanning process, taking a line laser as both heat excitation for active thermography and spatial coding for 3-D reconstruction. Furthermore, the model enables the feature-free registration of thermogram sequence and 3-D shape, so that the registration is fast and robust without keypoint features. The experiments on standard height specimens, 3-D printing glass fiber composites, and carbon fiber intake tube have shown the error is calibrated within 0.25 mm in the range of 1 to 150 mm and evidenced the capability for subsurface defects detection. The ease and robustness of the proposed active 3-D thermography have a bright future for 3-D measurement, defects detection, and quality control in the production line.

Abstract:Thermoreflectance thermal imaging technique uses light in the visible wavelength range and has a diffraction limit of ∼250nm. Despite that TR is still capable of acquiring temperature signal from devices smaller in size down to ∼3x below diffraction limit. Below diffraction limit, the detected thermoreflectance signal underestimates the true measured temperature by 360%. Image blurring was used in the forward problem to explain the apparent temperature of the device quite accurately. In most applications, there is no unambiguous model of the device temperature for forward problem and one needs to reconstruct the true temperature profiles of the sub-diffraction devices from their measured TR images. This is an ill-posed inverse problem which may not have a unique solution. Here, a maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) image reconstruction technique is used along with an Iterative Coordinate Descent (ICD) Optimization approach to solve this inverse problem and restore the true temperature profile of the devices. Preliminary results show that temperature of sub-diffraction heater lines down to ∼150nm can be accurately estimated.

Abstract:Traditional Visual Odometry (VO) methods that utilize visible cameras frequently degrade in challenging illumination environments. Alternative vision sensors such as thermal cameras are promising for all-day navigation since the delivered thermal images are invariant to ambient illumination. However, traditional VO techniques cannot be directly translated to the thermal domain due to poor thermal image quality. Besides, the thermal cameras stop image capture during the unique imaging mechanism (e.g., Non-Uniformity Correction (NUC)), making the thermal VO easily lose tracking. In this letter, we propose a thermal-depth odometry method that can fuse information from both types of sensors, thermal and depth cameras. The system front-end estimates 6-DoF camera motion via a semi-direct framework, fully exploiting thermographic data cues from raw thermal images. The depth information is aligned with the thermal images by extrinsic parameters to enhance the robustness of motion estimation. To overcome the challenge from the NUC, the proposed method introduces an NUC handling module, which can conduct pose estimation by registering multiple point clouds generated from depth images. The proposed method is evaluated on public datasets. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide competitive localization performance under different illumination.

Abstract:This work builds on the previous introduction [1] of a coupled experimental-computational system devised to fully characterize the thermal behavior of complex 3D submicron electronic devices. The new system replaces the laser-based surface temperature scanning approach with a CCD camera-based approach. As before, the thermo-reflectance thermography system is used to non-invasively measure with submicron resolution the 2D surface temperature field of an activated device. The measured temperature field is then used as input for an ultra-fast inverse computational solution to fully characterize the thermal behavior of the complex three-dimensional device. For the purposes of this investigation, basic micro-heater devices were built, activated, and measured. In order to quantitatively validate the coupled experimental-computational system, the system was used to extract geometric features of a known device, thus assessing the system's ability to combine measured experimental results and computations to fully characterize complex 3D electronic devices.

Machine learning reconstruction of depth-dependent thermal conductivity profile from pump-probe thermoreflectance signals

Abstract:Characterizing materials with spatially varying thermal conductivities is significant to unveil the structure-property relation for a wide range of functional materials, such as chemical-vapor-deposited diamonds, ion-irradiated materials, nuclear materials under radiation, and battery electrode materials. Although the development of thermal conductivity microscopy based on time/frequency-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR/FDTR) enabled in-plane scanning of thermal conductivity profile, measuring depth-dependent thermal conductivity remains challenging. This work proposed a machine-learning-based reconstruction method for extracting depth-dependent thermal conductivity K(z) directly from frequency-domain phase signals. We demonstrated that the simple supervised-learning algorithm kernel ridge regression (KRR) can reconstruct K(z) without requiring pre-knowledge about the functional form of the profile. The reconstruction method can not only accurately reproduce typical K(z) distributions such as the pre-assumed exponential profile of chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) diamonds and Gaussian profile of ion-irradiated materials, but also complex profiles artificially constructed by superimposing Gaussian, exponential, polynomial, and logarithmic functions. In addition to FDTR, the method also shows excellent performances of reconstructing K(z) of ion-irradiated semiconductors from TDTR signals. This work demonstrates that combining machine learning with pump-probe thermoreflectance is an effective way for depth-dependent thermal property mapping.

Abstract:Monitoring the composition, blood flow properties, and hydration status of human skin can be important in diagnosing disease and tracking overall health. Current methods are largely limited to clinical environments, and they primarily measure properties of superficial layers of the skin, such as the stratum corneum (10–40 µm). This work introduces soft, skin‐like thermal depth sensors (e‐TDS) in designs that seamlessly couple with human skin and measure its thermal properties with depth sensitivity that can extend up to 6 mm beneath the surface. Guidelines for tailoring devices to enable measurements through different effective depths follow from a systematic set of experiments, supported by theoretical modeling. On‐body testing validates the physiological relevance of measurements using the e‐TDS platform, with potential to aid the diagnosis of deep cutaneous and systemic diseases. Specific demonstrations include measurements that capture responses ranging from superficial changes in skin properties that result from application of a moisturizer, to changes in microvascular flow at intermediate depths induced by heating/cooling, to detection of inflammation in the deep dermis and subcutaneous fat in an incidence of a local bacterial infection, cellulitis.
