Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an automated wavelength seeking scheme for an O-band 1 × 2 silicon photonic switch based on an add-drop structure with two cascaded resonators. In the scheme, two three-layer neural networks are employed to learn the relationship between the monitored optical powers and the heating voltages of the two coupled ring resonators. Then, the two neural networks can quickly predict the required heating voltages according to the monitored optical powers. Therefore, the wavelength seeking can be realized through a training process, which is carried out only once, and a seeking process. By using this scheme, the dual-ring switch can be locked to the wavelength of the input light with a constant duration of 860 μs. The maximum seeking errors for the two rings are 0.08 and 0.09 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a reconfigurable 4 × 4 silicon optical switch network by using an architecture of Half-Crossbar. It has the advantage of flexible scalability and utilizes fewer elements. The proposed switch is composed of six dual-microring resonators tuned by the thermo-optic effect. The footprint is only 176 μm × 632 μm. At the wavelength of 1557 nm, the average insertion loss is smaller than 2.5 dB according to the results of all 24 switching states. Its rising response time is about 4.9 μs. The experiment verified the optical data transmission ability of the proposed switch network.

Abstract:A channel-selectable optical link based on a silicon microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated.This optical link consists of the wavelength-tunable microring modulators and the filters,defined on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform.With a p-i-n junction embedded in the microring modulator,light at the resonant wavelength of the ring resonator is modulated.The 2nd-order microring add-drop filter routes the modulated light.The channel selectivity is demonstrated by heating the microrings.With a thermal tuning efficiency of 5.9mW/nm,the filter drop port response was successfully tuned with 0.8nm channel spacing.We also show that modulation can be achieved in these channels.This device aims to offer flexibility and increase the bandwidth usage efficiency in optical interconnection.

Abstract:An integrated flexible-grid 1 x 2 wavelength-selective switch based on reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators using strip waveguides is designed and experimentally demonstrated. By flexibly tuning the resonance of microring resonators and path phase differences via the thermooptic effect, the transmission spectra with adjustable bandwidths can be formed as desired at the output ports. Our experimental results reveal that the fabricated flexiblegrid 1 x 2 wavelength-selective switch provides crosstalk lower than -1039 dB. The 3-dB bandwidth varies from 0.38 nm to 1 nm, the in-band ripple is less than 0.52 dB, and the response time is about 17.6 mu s. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, a compact integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with nine reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators. Using thermal tuning, the transmission spectra of silicon microring resonators are coherently combined to provide adjustable bandwidths as desired. The operation principle and detailed analysis of the designed device are presented. Calculation results show the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the large bandwidth varies from 0.56 to 4.09 nm and the bandwidth tuning for the spectrum with the moderate bandwidth ranges from 0.38 to 2.64 nm. The integrated flexible-grid 1 × 2 wavelength-selective switch with the maximum bandwidth tunability has a maximum crosstalk of -11.5 dB.

Abstract:We report a fiber optic switch based on a novel MEMS technology allowing fast switch (<2 ms), excellent isolation (>50dB) and wide bandwidth. Each switch module consists of an electromagnetically actuated gold-coated silicon mirror rotating around a 100 mum diameter shaft and a miniature 5V driven coil. Enabling technology is precision EDM machining and laser cutting. The switch is scalable to 8 X 8 and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of integrated flexible-grid wavelength-selective switch composed of reconfigurable add-drop silicon microring resonators with interferometric couplers is described in detail. Owing to tunable interferometric couplers, the proposed device is capable of realizing an increase in adjustable channel spacing for a given field coupling coefficient. By carefully controlling the path phase differences and tunable interferometric couplers, the transmission spectra of adjacent channels can be selectively combined to form adjustable bandwidths as desired. As an example, an integrated flexible-grid 1 x 2 wavelength-selective switch is designed and theoretically analyzed. The channel spacing can increase from 0.1 to 0.8 nm. When the channel spacing is selected to be 0.8 nm, the bandwidth varies from 0.36 to 2.91 nm and a minimum extinction ratio of 14.8 dB is obtained.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a self-homodyne locking method for a silicon microring resonator (MRR). The device employs a self-homodyne detection structure and consists of a tunable MRR with two directional couplers along the ring for monitoring, two phase shifters to calibrate the phase difference between the two monitored optical signals, and a Y-branch to combine the two signals. A single photodetector is used to detect the output power of the Y-branch. If the MRR is on resonance, a destructive interference occurs in the Y-branch, therefore the monitored photocurrent is minimized. By using such a device structure and the homodyne detection scheme, the MRR with a Q factor of 1.9 × 104 can be accurately locked to the signal wavelength, and the locking process is insensitive to input power variation. The wavelength locking range is larger than one free spectral range (FSR) of 6 nm, and the locking errors are ≤0.015 nm.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:In this article, a design of integrated flexible-grid mode- and wavelength-selective switch consisting of silicon-based symmetric Y-junctions and double-series coupled microring resonators with interferometric couplers is introduced in detail. Using thermal tuning, the described device is capable of routing each mode and wavelength signal from the input port to any output port flexibly and independently, forming different bandwidths as needed. For fixed field coupling coefficients, the device can support multiple different wavelength-channel spacings. A silicon-based flexible-grid 1 x 6 mode- and wavelength-selective switch is carefully designed and analyzed as an example. The designed device works for two mode channels and three wavelength channels. The wavelength-channel spacing can vary from 0.10 to 0.80 nm and the 3-dB bandwidth changes from 0.08 to 2.00 nm. When the wavelength-channel spacing is set to be 0.80 nm, the extinction ratio is greater than 50.90 dB and the crosstalk is less than -15.36 dB.

Abstract:The 2-µm wave band has attracted significant research interest due to its potential applications for next-generation high-capacity optical communication and sensing. As the key component, fast optical switches are essential for an advanced and reconfigurable optical network. Motivated by this prospect, we propose and demonstrate two typical silicon PIN diode switches at 2 µm. One is based on a coupled microring resonator (CMRR), and the other is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a push-pull-like configuration. The measured insertion loss of the CMRR switch is <2.5 dB, and the cross talk is <-10.8 dB. The insertion loss of the MZI switch is <2 dB, and the cross talk is <-15.6 dB. The switch times of these two structures are both lower than 12.5 ns.

Single-electrode-controlled wavelength switching over 14 channels with 200GHz spacing is demonstrated with side-mode-suppression-ratio (SMSR) up to 37dB. Abstract:A compact silicon photonic wavelength-selective switch (WSS) based on an array of elliptical microrings with adiabatically varied radii and widths is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A 1 × 4 WSS is designed and realized by integrating four cells sharing the same bus waveguide. Particularly each cell contains four elliptical microring units corresponding to four wavelength-channels. For the fabricated WSS, the average excess loss at the output port of all the channels is measured to be less than 1 dB, while the crosstalk between adjacent channels is less than −20 dB. Leveraging the thermo-optic effect and fine wavelength-tuning linearity, precise alignment of the resonance peak can be implemented, enabling the selection of arbitrary wavelength-channel for any port. The fabricated WSS is used for realizing wavelength-selective data routing with 30 Gbps non-return-to-zero signals and open eye diagrams are obtained. The proposed architecture has excellent scalability, which can facilitate the development of reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers in wavelength-division-multiplexing systems, and is suitable for building large-scale optical data center interconnects.

Abstract:The 2 mu m wavelength band has become a promising candidate to be the next communication window. We demonstrate high-speed modulators based on a 220 nm silicon-on-insulator platform working at a wavelength of 1950 nm, using the free carrier plasma dispersion effect in silicon. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer modulator and a microring modulator have been characterized. At 1950 nm, the carrier-depletion modulator operates at a data rate of 20 Gbit/s with an extinction ratio of 5.8 dB and insertion loss of 13 dB. The modulation efficiency (V-pi (.) L-pi) is 2.68 V(.)cm at 4 V reverse bias. The device operation is broadband, and we also characterize its performance at 1550 nm. At 1550 nm, an open eye is obtained at 30 Gbit/s. The difference in bandwidth is caused by the bandwidth limit of the 2 mu m measurement setup. We also show a ring modulator paired with a low power integrated driver working in hybrid carrier depletion and injection mode at a data rate of 3 Gbit/s with power consumption of 2.38 pJ/bit in the 2 mu m wavelength range. This work is a proof of principle demonstration and paves a route toward a full silicon-based transceiver in the 2 mu m window. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversions in a 10 μm radius resonance-split silicon microring resonator based on free carrier dispersion effect. The split resonance is caused by the mutual coupling between the two countertraveling modes inside the ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions are performed at data rates from 500 Mbytes/s to 5 Gbytes/s and a dual-channel wavelength multicasting is realized at a data rate of 1.25 Gbytes/s. The resonance splitting phenomenon opens up opportunities to convert more closely spaced wavelengths, thus effectively increasing the system capacity.
