Abstract:Methane has gained significant attention due to its abundant reserves and notable greenhouse effect. Electrocatalytic conversion of methane is an efficient and green pathway proceeding under mild conditions. However, the low solubility of methane in aqueous electrolytes imposes mass transfer limitations, leading to low current densities in electrocatalytic reactions and hindering large-scale production. This paper discusses the recent progress in quite a few aspects of electrocatalytic conversion of methane. Firstly, the reaction mechanisms involved in methane electrocatalysis are summarized, including dehydrogenation and C–H bond cleavage mediated by the active species. Next, we discuss how to promote electrochemical methane conversion regarding both the reaction process and mass transfer from the perspective of chemical engineering. Considerable efforts have been done to enhance the reaction process, including developing efficient electrocatalysts and devices. Meanwhile, the enhancement of transport processes via, e.g. improving the solubility of methane and modification on the transport area and distance, also facilitates more efficient methane conversion. Finally, an outlook on future development challenges is provided.

Abstract:Syngas is significant for the chemical industry for the synthesis of a variety of hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals. Different syngas-based products require syngas with different CO/H-2 ratios, which depend mainly on the design of the catalyst. Under this background, we successfully synthesized syngas by electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) with a controllable CO/H-2 ratio over a AuCu bimetallic catalyst. In contrast to the monometallic Au and Cu catalysts, the AuCu bimetallic catalyst gives a 95.2% of Faradaic efficiency (FE) at only 290 mV on the selective conversion from CO2 to CO. By tuning the Cu/Au ratio and potential during the electrochemical conversion, the H-2/CO in the obtained syngas products can be obtained at the wide range of 0.12 to 5.24 We propose that the controllable H-2/CO ratio from CO2 is significant in industrial production and will decrease the cost of catalyst fabrication.

Abstract:CO2 electroreduction, which coupled the application of renewable electricity, paved a promising way for syngas synthesis. Herein, we demonstrated that Co-based N doped carbon prepared by a simple pyrolysis method provided an ideal platform to generate syngas with tunable ratios of H-2 to CO. During CO2 electroreduction, Co-based N doped carbon exhibited the highest faradaic efficiency (FE) of 56.3% for CO with a total current density of 10.8 mA cm(-2) at -0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Structural characterizations showed that the co-existence of Co-0 and Co2+ was responsible for the synthesis of tunable syngas. Notably, we obtained syngas with tunable ratios of H-2 to CO ranging from similar to 1 : 1 to 3 : 1 with the highest current density reaching 47.6 mA cm(-2). This work provides a green way to produce syngas for further applications.

Abstract:The synthesis of renewable chemical fuels from CO2 and H2O via photoelectrochemical (PEC) route reprensents a promising room-temperature approach for transforming greenhouse gas into value-added chemicals (e.g., syngas), but to date it has been hampered by the lack of efficient photocathode for CO2 reduction. Herein, we report efficient PEC CO2 reduction into syngas by photocathode engineering. The photocathode is consisting of a planar p-n Si junction for strong light harvesting, GaN nanowires for efficient electron extraction and transfer, and Au/TiO2 for rapid electrocatalytic syngas production. The photocathode yields a record-high solar energy conversion efficiency of 2.3%. Furthermore, desirable syngas compositions with CO/H2 ratios such as 1:2 and 1:1 can be produced by simply varying the size of Au nanoparticle. Theoretical calculations reveal that the active sites for CO and H2 generation are the facet and undercoordinated sites of Au particles, respectively.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction into syngas (a mixture of CO and H2) provides a promising route to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and store intermittent solar energy into value-added chemicals. Design of photoelectrode with high energy conversion efficiency and controllable syngas composition is of central importance but remains challenging. Herein, we report a decoupling strategy using dual cocatalysts to tackle the challenge based on joint computational and experimental investigations. Density functional theory calculations indicate the optimization of syngas generation using a combination of fundamentally distinctive catalytic sites. Experimentally, by integrating spatially separated dual cocatalysts of a CO-generating catalyst and a H2-generating catalyst with GaN nanowires on planar Si photocathode, we report a record high applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.88% and controllable syngas products with tunable CO/H2 ratios (0-10) under one-sun illumination. Moreover, unassisted solar CO2 reduction with a solar-to-syngas efficiency of 0.63% is demonstrated in a tandem photoelectrochemical cell.

Dynamic Interface with Enhanced Visible-Light Absorption and Electron Transfer for Direct Photoreduction of Flue Gas to Syngas

Abstract:The direct usage of CO2 in the flue gas to produce fuels or chemicals is of great significance from energy-saving and low-cost perspectives, yet it is still underexplored. Herein, we report the photoreduction of CO2 from the simulated industrial exhaust by synergistic catalysis of TEOA and a metal-free composite (COF1-g-C3N4) fabricated via covalently grafting COF1 with g-C3N4. The hydrogen bond interaction between TEOA and hydrazine units on COF1 is detected in diluted CO2, which leads to significantly enhanced light absorption in the whole visible-light region. Also, the photo-induced electrons undergo fast transfer from COF1 to g-C3N4. This kind of dynamic interface with enhanced light absorption and electron transfer effects promotes the photosynthetic yield of syngas to 165.6 μmol·g-1·h-1 with the use of simulated exhaust gas as a raw material directly. The photosynthetic yield of syngas ranks among the highest of known metal-free catalysts in diluted CO2. This work provides a general rule for designing efficient catalysts via a controlled catalytic interface and new insights into the role of TEOA in photochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical synthesis of value-added chemicals from CO and H2O powered by renewable energy is a promising technique to supplement, if not eventually replace, the Fischer–Tropsch process, which requires high energy input (i.e., typical temperatures of 200–400 °C and pressures of 10–200 atm) and large-scale reactors that are difficult to match to the disperse renewable energy sources. Moreover, this technique is also ideal for implementing the electroreduction of CO2 using a tandem strategy because many catalysts can convert CO2 to CO with high efficiency. However, the direct reduction of CO2 to more valuable hydrocarbons and oxygenates is hindered by the lack of efficient catalysts. This perspective highlights the current understanding and progress of CO electroreduction from both experimental and computational approaches. The challenges that must be overcome for further development are also identified and discussed.
Porous Palladium Nanomeshes with Enhanced Electrochemical CO2-into-Syngas Conversion over a Wider Applied Potential

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into syngas, which can be used directly in the classical petroleum industrial processes, provides a powerful approach for achieving the recycling of anthropogenic carbon. Pd has previously been reported to be capable of converting CO2 into syngas with various CO/H-2 ratios, but only at limited applied potential, which is mainly attributed to fewer active sites exposed toward electrocatalysis. Herein, high-performance Pd nanomeshes (NMs) assembled with branch-like Pd nanoparticles were designed and synthesized by using a simple interface-induced self-assembly strategy; these NMs could catalyze CO2-into-syngas conversion with a high current density in a wide applied potential range from -0.5 to -1.0 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). Further evidence validated that the enhanced activity of the Pd NMs was not only caused by the crosslinked network structure accelerating electron transport, but also by the greater number of edge and/or corner active sites exposed on the surface of the NMs, which facilitated CO2 adsorption, CO2.- formation, COOH* stabilization, and CO generation. Under optimal operating conditions, Pd NMs could balance two competing reactions: CO2 reduction and hydrogen evolution. The resultant syngases with the ideal and tunable CO/H-2 ratio between 0.5:1 and 1:1 could be used directly for methanol synthesis and Fischer-Tropsch reactions.

Abstract:Syngas, a CO and H2 mixture mostly generated from non-renewable fossil fuels, is an essential feedstock for production of liquid fuels. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 and H+/H2O is an alternative renewable route to produce syngas. Here we introduce the concept of coupling a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst with a CDots/C3N4 composite (a CO2 reduction catalyst) to achieve a cheap, stable, selective and efficient route for tunable syngas production. Co3O4, MoS2, Au and Pt serve as the HER component. The Co3O4-CDots-C3N4 electrocatalyst is found to be the most efficient among the combinations studied. The H2/CO ratio of the produced syngas is tunable from 0.07:1 to 4:1 by controlling the potential. This catalyst is highly stable for syngas generation (over 100 h) with no other products besides CO and H2. Insight into the mechanisms balancing between CO2 reduction and H2 evolution when applying the HER-CDots-C3N4 catalyst concept is provided.

Abstract:ConspectusElectrocatalytic reduction of CO2 is a desirable method to produce valuable products from CO2. One of the main research challenges for electrocatalysis that produces carbon-containing products from CO2 is avoiding unwanted hydrogen production. Instead of totally eliminating hydrogen, our approach makes use of the readily available protons in aqueous electrolyte to coproduce CO and H2, making synthesis gas (syngas) with a tunable CO:H2 ratio; the resulting syngas can then be used as feedstock for existing thermocatalytic processes such as Fischer-Tropsch and methanol synthesis reactions. We discovered that palladium hydride (PdH), formed under electrocatalytic reaction conditions, is an effective electrocatalyst that enables this unique product distribution. We employed in situ synchrotron techniques to determine the formation of the PdH phase during electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. We also performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine the binding energies of key intermediates on PdH to identify descriptors to correlate experimentally observed trends in activity and selectivity.Since first reporting on the potential application of PdH to produce syngas, our research group has refined control over the syngas product selectivity, improved the activity, and reduced the loading of Pd in electrocatalysts. We achieved this by the following approaches: understanding the structure-function relationship with shape-controlled Pd nanoparticles, determining the cation and isotopic effects of electrolyte, alloying Pd with inexpensive secondary metals, supporting Pd on transition metal carbides and nitrides, and utilizing single atom Pd catalysts. At each step, we monitored the phase transition from Pd to PdH under reaction conditions with in situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption and X-ray diffraction techniques by identifying the onset potential for the appearance of the characteristic Pd-Pd bond length and diffraction patterns associated with PdH formation. We also identified descriptors for syngas production on PdH, bimetallic PdH, and supported PdH catalysts by correlating DFT calculations of PdH stability in different catalytic systems as well as the effect of PdH formation on the binding strength of reaction intermediates. The research methodology established here is useful not only for continued optimization of Pd-based syngas-producing electrocatalysts but also for enhancing activity while reducing the loading of precious metals for other electrocatalytic applications. Moreover, we feel the advances in electrocatalytic syngas production described here represent a critical step toward sustainable CO2 utilization that should inspire continued efforts.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction to produce CO is one of the most promising pathways to eliminate CO 2 emissions and store intermittent energy sources. However, the most critical usage of CO is via mixing with H 2 to form syngas, which is a crucial feedstock for many value-added chemicals. Therefore, producing syngas with a suitable CO/H 2 ratio in a one-step reaction is desirable in the CO 2 RR process. To achieve this end, dual single-atom sites supported by the nitrogen-doped carbon show great potential. Herein, we show that a dual single-atom catalyst with Bi-N 4 and Zn-N 4 units is efficient for generating syngas with tunable CO/H 2 ratios (0.20 to 2.92), which is of great significance to downstream industrial production. Moreover, this work highlights the potential to control the CO/H 2 ratios for efficient syngas production using the coexisting single-atom sites.

Abstract:The direct electrochemical reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (eCO2RR) captured from the ambient air into base chemicals and fuels holds great potential for an elegant implementation of a net-zero emission carbon cycle. This assumes that the energy used to drive the capturing and conversion process is largely free of carbon dioxide emissions, i.e., from renewables such as wind and photovoltaics. Moreover, high Faradaic efficiency for the desired products at sufficiently high current density in eCO2RR has to be demonstrated to compete with more conventional multi-step Power-to-X conversion schemes both in terms of overall energy efficiency and cost.[1] eCO2RR is known for its wide variety of products.[2] However, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which is more thermodynamically reactive, inevitably seizes protons and electrons in the cathode. In addition, the reaction pathway of C2+ products is more complex than that of C1 products because it is strongly dependent on the catalyst surface and electrocatalytic operating conditions. For example, the formation of C-C bonds is interfered with the formation of C-H and C-O bonds on the catalyst surface, resulting in the direct generation of multi-carbon products technically challenging.[3] Due to these kinetic barriers, the C2+ products show much lower the energy efficiency, Faraday efficiency, and partial reduction current density of than those of the C1 products. The mechanistic aspects of the reaction pathways for the various C2+ products have not been fully deciphered, which ultimately limits the commercial application of eCO2RR conversion to C2+ products.[4] Noting that industrial thermocatalytic processes produce and supply long-chain hydrocarbons in a long-term stable manner, we propose the production of C2+ products by combining simultaneous thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In the ongoing work, hydrogen from the water electrolysis is further converted to syngas via a reverse water-gas shift reaction (rWGS), followed by an established conversion route to fuels and chemicals such as Fischer-Tropsch or methanol synthesis and methanol to olefins, gasoline or jet fuel.[5] Here, a reactor and test bench capable of operating at 20 bar and 200 degrees Celsius have been fabricated to enable simultaneous thermocatalytic and electrocatalytic production of C2+ products. Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction into controllable clean syngas (H2 and CO) by using clean electric energy is an environment-friendly strategy for the cycle of carbon resources. However, there are still some challenges in this process, such as low current density and high onset potential. In this work, ZIF-8 is used as the precursor to adjust the ratio of metal Ni and Cu to control the composition of syngas (H2/CO 0.6:1–8:1). When metal Ni and Cu are both present, the onset potential can be effectively reduced, and the limiting current density would increase at the same time. Through subsequent experimental characterization and analysis, the catalyst of Ni Cu-1 effectively reduces the onset potential and increases the limiting current density. What’s more, the superior CO2 electroreduction performance is attributed to the high binding energy of pyridine N in Ni NC, and the introduction of Cu in Ni Cu-1 is beneficial to the generation of syngas with adjustable composition. The research provides a feasible method for electrocatalytic CO2RR to reasonably utilize H2 competition reaction and regulate the proportion of syngas.
Renewable Syngas Generation via Low-Temperature Electrolysis: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract:The production of syngas (i.e., a mixture of CO and H2) via the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and water can contribute to the green transition of various industrial sectors. Here we provide a joint academic-industrial perspective on the key technical and economical differences of the concurrent (i.e., CO and H2 are generated in the same electrolyzer cell) and separated (i.e., CO and H2 are electrogenerated in different electrolyzers) production of syngas. Using a combination of literature analysis, experimental data, and techno-economic analysis, we demonstrate that the production of synthesis gas is notably less expensive if we operate a CO2 electrolyzer in a CO-selective mode and combine it with a separate PEM electrolyzer for H2 generation. We also conclude that by the further decrease of the cost of renewable electricity and the increase of CO2 emission taxes, such prepared renewable syngas will become cost competitive.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction offers an attractive pathway for converting CO2 to valuable fuels and chemicals. Despite the existence of some excellent electrocatalysts with superior selectivity for specific products, these reactions are conducted at low current densities ranging from several mA cm−2 to tens of mA cm−2, which are far from commercially desirable values. To extend the applications of CO2 electroreduction technology to an industrial scale, long-term operations under high current densities (over 200 mA cm−2) are desirable. In this paper, we review recent major advances toward higher current density in CO2 reduction, including: (1) innovations in electrocatalysts (engineering the morphology, modulating the electronic structure, increasing the active sites, etc.); (2) the design of electrolyzers (membrane electrode assemblies, flow cells, microchannel reactors, high-pressure cells, etc.); and (3) the influence of electrolytes (concentration, pH, anion and cation effects). Finally, we discuss the current challenges and perspectives for future development toward high current densities.
