Abstract:Direct photoreduction of CO2 from flue gas is an energy-saving avenue to realize the carbon-neutral cycle but it is still in its infancy. Herein, we constructed a new anionic metal-organic framework based on trinuclear Ni clusters and thiophenecarboxylic acid for CO2 photoreduction from the exhaust gas of a power plant. Under visible-light irradiation, the yield of CO was 17.4-26.3 mmol g-1 in diluted CO2 with a concentration of 5-20 %. The apparent quantum yield (A.Q.Y.) in a 10 % CO2 atmosphere was determined to be 2.1 %, which ranks among the highest value of the reported photocatalysts under similar conditions. Importantly, in real flue gas containing 10 % CO2, the selectivity of 90.4 % was achieved and CO generation reached 18.2 mmol g-1. In-situ transient photovoltage (TPV) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the formation of a CO2 bridged photocatalytic interface between Ni-MOF1 and Ru complex ([Ru(bpy)3]Cl2/[Ru(bpy)2]Cl2) is a crucial factor for the efficient CO2-to-CO conversion in diluted CO2.

Abstract:Abstract Converting industrial exhaust into valuable chemicals is crucial for sustainable economic development. Direct CO 2 photoreduction from real flue gas is an ideal clean and promising way, until now, without success. Here, photoreduction of exhaust gas from the power plant by Ni bridged COF (Ni@TPHH‐COF) is shown. Under visible light, syngas is produced with CO output reaching 2.1 mol kg −1 h −1 . The ideal conversion of flue gas is up to 672 L kg −1 h −1 . Of note, the system exhibits appealing yield and selectivity under 0.5–40% CO 2 and AQY achieves 3.96% under 10% CO 2 , ranking among the highest value of reported photocatalysts. Mechanism studies suggest CO 2 plays a dual function as both a component of a catalytic site and a reactant, which can not only selectively enrich CO 2 in catalytic sites but improve reaction rate significantly. This CO 2 ‐dominated bifunctional site prolongs electrons lifetime, stabilizes intermediates, and reduces free energy of reduction under diluted CO 2 .

Photocatalytic CO2 -to-Syngas Evolution with Molecular Catalyst Metal-Organic Framework Nanozymes

Abstract:Syngas, a mixture of CO and H2 , is a high-priority intermediate for producing several commodity chemicals, e.g., ammonia, methanol, and synthetic hydrocarbon fuels. Accordingly, parallel sunlight-driven catalytic conversion of CO2 and protons to syngas is a key step toward a sustainable energy cycle. State-of-the-art catalytic systems and materials often fall short as application-oriented concurrent CO and H2 evolution requires challenging reaction conditions which can hamper stability, selectivity, and efficiency. Here a light-harvesting metal-organic framework hosting two molecular catalysts is engineered to yield colloidal, water-stable, versatile nanoreactors for photocatalytic syngas generation with highly controllable product ratios. In-depth fluorescence, X-ray, and microscopic studies paired with kinetic analysis show that the host delivers energy efficiently to active sites, conceptually yielding nanozymes. This unlocked sustained CO2 reduction and H2 evolution with benchmark turnover numbers and record incident photon conversions up to 36%, showcasing a highly active and durable all-in-one material toward application in solar energy-driven syngas generation.

Abstract:The fabrication of an efficient and low-cost photocathode still remains a big challenge. We herein report a Ag/ CuxO@rGO/Mo photocathode for CO2 conversion. A unique wavelength-dependent performance is found to enhance the formation of the key intermediate groups by exciting photothermal local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) using the lights with wavelengths ranging from 550 to 600 nm. CO, H2 and CH4 can be stably produced with dual photoelectrodes using a neutral solution. An unbiased solar-to-gaseous-carbon-fuel efficiency (SGCF) of 0.51 % has been achieved, which sets a record for carbon gas fuel production with binary photoelectrodes. In addition, the CO/H2 ratio could be tuned in the range from 0.65 to 1.84, which makes it possible to fine tune the syngas production. The excellent PEC CO2 reduction capability achieved by the new wavelengthdependent catalytic route may shine some lights for the future design and development of the next-generation PEC materials and devices.

Abstract:Flavin coenzymes play a variety of roles in biological systems. This Perspective highlights the chemical versatility of flavins by reviewing research on five flavoenzymes that have been studied in our laboratory. Each of the enzymes discussed in this review [the acyl-CoA dehydrogenases (ACDs), CDP-6-deoxy-l-threo-d-glycero-4-hexulose-3-dehydrase reductase (E3), CDP-4-aceto-3,6-dideoxygalactose synthase (YerE), UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM), and type II isopentenyl diphosphate:dimethylallyl diphosphate isomerase (IDI-2)] utilizes flavin in a distinct role. In particular, the catalytic mechanisms of two of these enzymes, UGM and IDI-2, may involve novel flavin chemistry.

Abstract:Solar-driven highly efficient CO2 photoreduction by water oxidation to produce high-value-added chemical feedstocks of fuels remains extremely challenging. Over the past few decades, two types of reaction modes (solid–liquid or solid–gas) have been developed by researchers to achieve substrate-based photocatlytic CO2 reduction. In the absence of organic solvents, photosensitizers, and organic sacrificial agents, the solid–gas mode may be more suitable for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A facile hydrothermal method was used to fabricate a low-cost and photosensitive azobenzene tetracarboxylic acid-based metal–organic framework (MOF), PCN-250-Fe3, which offers the advantages of visible-light and CO2 adsorption and facilitates an electron-coupled proton transition. Notably, PCN-250-Fe3 exhibited a maximum photocatalytic activity of 16.32 μmol g–1 with ca. 77.57% selectivity in 4 h without the use of photosensitizers or organic sacrificial agents under visible-light irradiation. This photocatalytic performance is superior to that of most nonporphyrin-based MOF photocatalysts under solid–gas reaction conditions. This study provides unique insight into enhancing the efficiency of the photoreduction of CO2 to CH4 by pure water.

Abstract:Directly capturing atmospheric CO2 and converting it into valuable fuel through photothermal synergy is an effective way to mitigate the greenhouse effect. This study developed a gas-solid interface photothermal catalytic system for atmospheric CO2 reduction, utilizing the innovative photothermal catalyst (Cu porphyrin) CuTCPP/MXene/TiO2. The catalyst demonstrated a photothermal catalytic performance of 124 μmol·g-1·h-1 for CO and 106 μmol·g-1·h-1 for CH4, significantly outperforming individual components. Density functional theory (DFT) results indicate that the enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the internal electric field between the components, which significantly enhances carrier utilization. The introduction of CuTCPP reduces free energy of the photothermal catalytic reaction. Additionally, the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and high-speed electron transfer properties of MXene further boost the catalytic reaction rate. This well-designed catalyst and catalytic system offer a simple method for capturing atmospheric CO2 and converting it in-situ through photothermal catalysis.

Abstract:We report a ternary hybrid photocatalyst architecture with tailored interfaces that boost the utilization of solar energy for photochemical CO2 reduction by synergizing electron and heat flows in the photocatalyst. The photocatalyst comprises cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules assembled on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are decorated with nearly monodispersed cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs). The CdS QDs absorb visible light and generate electron-hole pairs. The CNTs rapidly transfer the photogenerated electrons from CdS to CoPc. The CoPc molecules then selectively reduce CO2 to CO. The interfacial dynamics and catalytic behavior are clearly revealed by time-resolved and in situ vibrational spectroscopies. In addition to serving as electron highways, the black body property of the CNT component can create local photothermal heating to activate amine-captured CO2 , namely carbamates, for direct photochemical conversion without additional energy input.

Abstract:Solar carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction provides an attractive alternative to producing sustainable chemicals and fuel. However, the construction of a highly active photocatalyst was challenging because of the rapid charge recombination and sluggish surface CO2 reduction. Herein, a unique Co-N4Cl2 single site was fabricated by loading Co species into the 2,2'-bipyridine and triazine-containing covalent organic framework (COF) for CO2 conversion into syngas under visible light irradiation. The resulting champion catalyst TPy-COF-Co enabled a record-high CO production rate of 426 mmol g-1 h-1, associated with the unprecedented turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) of 2095 and 1607 h−1, respectively. The catalyst also exhibited favorable recycling performance and widely adjustable syngas production (CO/H2 ratio: 1.8:1-1:16). A systematical investigation including operando synchrotron X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, in-situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS), and theoretical calculation indicated that the triazine-based COF framework promoted the charge transfer towards the single Co-N4Cl2 sites that greatly promoted the CO2 activation by lowering the energy barrier of *COOH generation, facilitating the CO2 transformation. This work highlights the great potential of the molecular regulation of COF-derived single-atom catalysts to boost CO2 photoreduction efficiency.

Meanwhile, the H-2/CO molar ratio also showed strong dependence on the modality of Ag at the metal-perovskite interface. The design offers a promising pathway for transforming CO2 to valuable chemicals based on efficient photocatalysts design.

Abstract:An integrative photocatalytic system has been presented by covalently grafting cobalt‐based molecular complexes on donor–acceptor covalent triazine‐based frameworks. The migration of the photogenerated charge carriers from photosensitizer units to the catalytic active sites is significantly promoted for efficient photocatalytic production of syngas from carbon dioxide and water. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction together with hydrogen generation is a promising approach to generate syngas, the photogenerated electron migration from photosensitizers to the catalytic active sites is the rate‐determining step. Herein, an integrative strategy is presented by covalently grafting metal complexes into donor–acceptor covalent triazine‐based frameworks. The catalytic active sites are integrated with the photosensitizer units by covalent linkages to form an extended π‐conjugated framework, which significantly reduces the energy barrier for the migration of the photogenerated charge carriers, resulting in high activity and durability in photocatalytic CO2 reduction into syngas under visible light irradiation. The CO and H2 evolution amounts in 1.5 h are 1086 and 1042 μmol g−1, respectively, which greatly surpass those in the host‐guest counterparts. Furthermore, selective adsorption for CO2 over N2 renders this photocatalytic system to be effective for syngas production from the simulated flue gas. This study provides new approaches to construct the integrative photocatalytic systems for solar‐to‐chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Rational design of robust photocatalytic systems to direct capture and in-situ convert diluted CO2 from flue gas is a promising but challenging way to achieve carbon neutrality. Here, we report a new type of host-guest photocatalysts by integrating CO2-enriching ionic liquids and photoactive metal-organic frameworks PCN-250-Fe2M (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Mn) for artificial photosynthetic diluted CO2 reduction in gas-solid phase. As a result, [Emim]BF4(39.3 wt%)@PCN-250-Fe2Co exhibits a record high CO2-to-CO reduction rate of 313.34 μmol g-1 h-1 under pure CO2 atmosphere and 153.42 μmol g-1 h-1 under diluted CO2 (15%) with about 100% selectivity. In scaled-up experiments with 1.0 g catalyst and natural sunlight irradiation, the concentration of pure and diluted CO2 (15%) could be significantly decreased to below 85% and 10%, respectively, indicating its industrial application potential. Further experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that ionic liquids not only benefit CO2 enrichment, but also form synergistic effect with Co2+ sites in PCN-250-Fe2Co, resulting in a significant reduction in Gibbs energy barrier during the rate-determining step of CO2-to-CO conversion.

Abstract:With the depletion of crude oil and especially the growing demand for lower olefins, the direct conversion of syngas into lower olefins via the Fischer-Tropsch to olefins (FTO) process is a promising alternative for the petroleum route. A photo-driven FTO process can dramatically change the product selectivity over Fe5C2 catalyst, leading to an olefin/paraffin ratio of 10.9 with CO conversion >49%. The selectivity toward CO2 was as low as 18.9%, ensuring a high carbon resource utilization efficiency, and the catalyst showed good stability. Under the photo-irradiation condition, the surface of the Fe5C2 catalyst was spontaneously decorated by O atoms formed in situ, resulting in a high selectivity to olefins, which makes it an excellent catalyst for photo-driven FTO reaction.

Abstract:The transformation of CO2 into value-added products from an impure CO2 stream, such as flue gas or exhaust gas, directly contributes to the principle of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Thus, we have developed a robust iron-based heterogeneous photocatalyst that can convert the exhaust gas from the car into CO with an exceptional production rate of 145 μmolg-1h-1. We characterized this photocatalyst by PXRD, XPS, ssNMR, EXAFS, XANES, HR-TEM, and further provided mechanistic experiments, and multi-scale/level computational studies. We have reached a clear understanding of its properties and performance that indicate that this highly robust photocatalyst could be used to design an efficient visible-light-mediated reduction strategy for the transformation of impure CO2 streams into value-added products.

Abstract:Photo-thermal co-catalytic reduction of CO2 to synthesize value-added chemicals presents a promising approach to addressing environmental issues. Nevertheless, traditional catalysts exhibit low light utilization efficiency, leading to the generation of a reduced number of electron-hole pairs and rapid recombination, thereby limiting catalytic performance enhancement. Herein, a Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalyst was developed by incorporating nitrogen-doped carbon coated TiO2 supported nickel (Ni) nanometallic particles (Ni/x-TiO2@NC). The optimal Ni/0.5-TiO2@NC sample displayed a conversion rate of 71.6 % and a methane (CH4) production rate of 65.3 mmol/(gcat·h) during photo-thermal co-catalytic CO2 methanation under full-spectrum illumination, with a CH4 selectivity exceeding 99.6 %. The catalyst demonstrates good stability as it shows no decay after two reaction cycles. The Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalysts display excellent efficiency in separating photo-generated electron-hole pairs and elevate the catalysts' temperature, thus accelerating the reaction rate. The in-situ experiments revealed that light-induced electron transfer effectively facilitates H2 dissociation and enhances surface defects, thereby promoting CO2 adsorption. This study introduces a novel approach for developing photo-thermal catalysts for CO2 reduction, aiming to enhance solar energy utilization and facilitate interface electron transfer.

Herein, a series of Fe5C2 loading on tunable N-doped carbon as photothermal catalysts are developed to achieve an efficient Fischer–Tropsch synthesis to olefin (FTO) reaction. Under light irradiation, the optimized catalyst delivers a selectivity of 55.3% for light olefins (CO2 free) at a CO conversion of 22.3%, showing 3.5 times the activity of pristine Fe5C2 catalyst. Experimental characterizations reveal electron transfer from the N atoms in support to the active phase of Fe5C2 to construct electron-rich active sites and therefore to boost the catalytic performance. N-concentration-dependent activity evaluation and density functional theory calculations ascertain that pyrrolic N plays a dominant role in promoting CO adsorption and activation. This study provides an alternative strategy of rational modulation of support to enhance solar-to-chemical conversion.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction into syngas (a mixture of CO and H2) provides a promising route to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and store intermittent solar energy into value-added chemicals. Design of photoelectrode with high energy conversion efficiency and controllable syngas composition is of central importance but remains challenging. Herein, we report a decoupling strategy using dual cocatalysts to tackle the challenge based on joint computational and experimental investigations. Density functional theory calculations indicate the optimization of syngas generation using a combination of fundamentally distinctive catalytic sites. Experimentally, by integrating spatially separated dual cocatalysts of a CO-generating catalyst and a H2-generating catalyst with GaN nanowires on planar Si photocathode, we report a record high applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.88% and controllable syngas products with tunable CO/H2 ratios (0-10) under one-sun illumination. Moreover, unassisted solar CO2 reduction with a solar-to-syngas efficiency of 0.63% is demonstrated in a tandem photoelectrochemical cell.

Co-facial π-π Interaction Expedites Sensitizer-to-Catalyst Electron Transfer for High-Performance CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:The sunlight-driven reduction of CO2 into carbonaceous fuels can lower the atmospheric CO2 concentration and provide renewable energy simultaneously, attracting scientists to design photocatalytic systems for facilitating this process. Significant progress has been made in designing high-performance photosensitizers and catalysts in this regard, and further improvement can be realized by installing additional interactions between the abovementioned two components, however, the design strategies and mechanistic investigations on such interactions remain challenging. Here, we present the construction of molecular models for intermolecular π-π interactions between the photosensitizer and the catalyst, via the introduction of pyrene groups into both molecular components. The presence, types, and strengths of diverse π-π interactions, as well as their roles in the photocatalytic mechanism, have been examined by 1H NMR titration, fluorescence quenching measurements, transient absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical simulations. We have also explored the rare dual emission behavior of the pyrene-appended iridium photosensitizer, of which the excited state can deliver the photo-excited electron to the pyrene-decorated cobalt catalyst at a fast rate of 2.60 × 106 s-1 via co-facial π-π interaction, enabling a remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 14.3 ± 0.8% at 425 nm and a high selectivity of 98% for the photocatalytic CO2-to-CO conversion. This research demonstrates non-covalent interaction construction as an effective strategy to achieve rapid CO2 photoreduction besides a conventional photosensitizer/catalyst design.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into a high-value-added C2 product is a highly challenging task because of insufficient electron deliverability and sluggish C-C coupling kinetics. Engineering catalytic interfaces in photocatalysts provides a promising approach to manipulate photoinduced charge carriers and create multiple catalytic sites for boosting the generation of C2 product from CO2 reduction. Herein, a Cuδ+/CeO2-TiO2 photocatalyst that contains atomically dispersed Cuδ+ sites anchored on the CeO2-TiO2 heterostructures consisting of highly dispersed CeO2 nanoparticles on porous TiO2 is designedly constructed by the pyrolytic transformation of a Cu2+-Ce3+/MIL-125-NH2 precursor. In the designed photocatalyst, TiO2 acts as a light-harvesting material for generating electron-hole pairs that are efficiently separated by CeO2-TiO2 interfaces, and the Cu-Ce dual active sites synergistically facilitate the generation and dimerization of *CO intermediates, thus lowering the energy barrier of C-C coupling. As a consequence, the Cuδ+/CeO2-TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits a production rate of 4.51 μmol-1·gcat-1·h-1 and 73.9% selectivity in terms of electron utilization for CO2 to C2H4 conversion under simulated sunlight, with H2O as hydrogen source and hole scavenger. The photocatalytic mechanism is revealed by operando spectroscopic methods as well as theoretical calculations. This study displays the rational construction of heterogeneous photocatalysts for boosting CO2 conversion and emphasizes the synergistic effect of multiple active sites in enhancing the selectivity of C2 product.
