Abstract:The accidental thermal abuse of single lithium ion cells via overheating is a common cause of thermal runaway (TR). Moreover, the occurrence of TR in any single cell of a battery module composed of multiple cells can lead to catastrophic damage via TR propagation (TRP) through the module. However, few studies have evaluated the primary characteristics of thermally-induced TR and TRP in actual battery modules experimentally under open-air environments. The present study addresses this issue by establishing the temperature, smoke propagation, and combustion characteristics of enclosed pouch battery modules composed of 12 LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode and graphite anode cells operating in a 4 parallel, 3 series configuration during the TRP process based on three parallel experiments conducted in an open-air environment with a heating plate applied to the first cell of the module to trigger TR, and temperature sensors positioned along the sequence of cells. Analysis of the TR process arising in the first cell demonstrates that an intense flame tends to be produced at the cathode because TR is initiated at the cathode. The fact that TR occurs within an enclosed module shell produces reductive gases attacking the anode, which limits the flame at the anode to a relatively small size, with a high proportion of dense smoke that flows more slowly than smoke flow at the cathode. The TR process then dramatically propagates, induces intense combustion at both the positive and negative electrode locations, and produces a maximum temperature of 1370 degrees C in the central region of the module. However, TR does not propagate uniformly in sequence from cell 1 to cell 12 within the module, but rather propagates in reverse from cell 6 to cell 5 in the middle of the module. This arises due to the influence of the flow of high-temperature smoke within the battery module enclosure during TR. Analysis of the combustion properties of the modules and the velocity profiles of flame jets demonstrate that the TRP process observed under the conditions of this study represent a high-temperature fire comprised of high-speed flame jets, which would exacerbate the propagation of TR between the adjacent cells of the battery module, and ultimately lead to extensive fire damage for the entire module or even the entire vehicle.
