Abstract:Plasma-catalytic oxidation of low concentration ethyl acetate was carried out in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The effect of novel nanofiber catalysts (V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 and TiO 2 ) and corresponding bulk catalysts on the plasma-catalytic oxidation process was investigated in terms of the removal efficiency of ethyl acetate, CO 2 selectivity and carbon balance. The combination of the DBD with the V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 nanofiber catalysts significantly enhanced the reaction performance of the plasma-catalytic oxidation of ethyl acetate, compared to the bulk V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 catalysts and TiO 2 catalysts. The highest removal efficiency of ethyl acetate (96%) was achieved at a specific energy density of 1059 $\mathrm{J}{\cdot}\mathrm {L} ^{-1}$ in the plasma-catalytic oxidation over the V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 catalysts. Catalyst characterization showed that the V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 nanofiber catalysts had smaller crystalline size and higher relative concentration of surface adsorbed oxygen (O ads ) species compared to the bulk catalysts, which play a key role in the oxidation of ethyl acetate and its intermediates on the catalyst surface. The formation of more reduced vanadium species (V 4+ ) in the nano-V 5 Ti catalysts compared to the bulk-V 5 Ti catalysts indicated the formation of more oxygen vacancies on the surface of the nano-V 5 Ti catalysts.
