Abstract:We have performed first-principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the retention and migration of hydrogen in Be22W, a stable low-W intermetallic compound. The solution energy of interstitial H in Be22W is found to be 0.49 eV lower, while the diffusion barrier, on the other hand, is higher by 0.13 eV compared to those in pure hcp-Be. The higher solubility and lower diffusivity for H atoms make Be22W a potential beneficial secondary phase in hcp-Be to impede the accumulation of H atoms, and hence better resist H blistering. We also find that in Be22W, the attraction between an interstitial H and a beryllium vacancy ranges from 0.34 eV to 1.08 eV, which indicates a weaker trapping for hydrogen than in pure Be. Our calculated results suggest that small size Be22W particles in hcp-Be might serve as the hydrogen trapping centers, hinder hydrogen bubble growth, and improve the resistance to irradiation void swelling, just as dispersed oxide particles in steel do.
Hydrogen Behaviors at the Near-Surface Region of Tungsten: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:As a plasma facing material, tungsten (W) is exposed to high-flux hydrogen isotope plasma, enduring unwanted surface blistering. Here, we performed first-principles calculations on the interaction between H and W surfaces, aiming to understand the surface bubble formation. We calculated the energetics of H at the top-surface and subsurface regions of W(110) and W(001), in together with the migration energy barriers of H at different near-surface sites. We found that H prefers to be adsorbed on the top-surface rather than dissolving into the subsurface regions, where H atoms generally exhibit a repulsive repulsion between each other to prevent the formation of H clusters. While migration of H from top-surface into sub-surface is difficult, the reverse migration is extremely easy. These findings suggest that retained H species during irradiation at sub-surface region of W are energetically unstable, and surface H bubble formation would not occur without the presence of defects.

Abstract:Nitrogen seeding is considered to be used to reduce the power load onto tungsten divertor armors in tokamaks. Consequently, plasma-material interactions will be affected by seeded nitrogen impurities. The influence of nitrogen pre-irradiation on deuterium induced blistering and deuterium retention in rolled tungsten has been investigated at different pre-irradiation temperatures in the linear plasma device STEP with ion flux > 10(21) m(-2) s(-1). Commercially rolled W samples were sequentially exposed to nitrogen plasma (380 K and 470 K) and deuterium plasma (510 K). Surface observations show that nitrogen pre-irradiation suppresses deuterium-induced surface blistering. Thermal desorption spectroscopy measurements indicate that deuterium retention in the rolled tungsten is reduced due to nitrogen pre-irradiation, and it significantly changes with the pre-irradiation temperature. These phenomena are supposed to be related to the formation and change of WNxS at different temperatures which is validated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses.

Abstract:In order to evaluate D blistering behavior in W based plasma facing materials, rolled W and different grades of W-V targets were exposed to high flux of 1.2×1024m−2s−1, low energy (38eV) D plasma at two different surface temperatures. The blistering behavior was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, accompanied by electron back-scattering diffraction. Highest numbers of blisters were observed on the surface of rolled tungsten. The addition of V precursor to W suppressed D blister formation. In the case of W-V alloys, comparatively submicron V-containing materials have shown high tendency but small size blisters formation than micron V-containing samples. A high density of blisters was observed near the (111) plane on the surface of both V-containing alloys. Nano-sized blisters were also observed on V enriched surface.

Abstract:Temperature is one of the critical factors that strongly affect the behavior of hydrogen isotopes in tungsten (W). This work investigates the effect of initial exposure temperature on the deuterium (D) retention and surface blistering in recrystallized W. D plasma exposure is started at 420 K and 600 K, respectively, and then changed to the same temperature of 520 K. For each temperature, the irradiation fluence is ∼ 1 × 1026 D m−2, and therefore the total fluence is ∼ 2 × 1026 D m−2 for each sample. A reference W sample was also exposed at 520 K with the same total fluence. Compared with the reference sample, it is found that the initial temperature of 420 K significantly inhibits the formation of intergranular blisters and leads to a reduction of intragranular blisters in size. Although the initial temperature of 600 K facilitates the formation of intergranular blisters, the intergranular blister size is reduced. This is possibly related to the relatively higher concentration of trapped D over a large depth range as revealed by the TMAP simulation results, leading to the fact that intergranular cracks are more prone to propagate along sloping grain boundaries. Thermal desorption spectra results show that the initial exposure temperature of 420 K and 600 K reduce D retention by a factor of ∼ 56 % and ∼ 34 %, respectively. It is considered to be connected with the blistering-induced defects and D transport in W, which are strongly affected by the initial exposure temperature. This work demonstrates that the initial exposure temperature plays a crucial role in D behavior in W, improving the understanding of the temperature effects of hydrogen isotopes behavior in W.

Abstract:The behavior of tungsten-vanadium (W-V) alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy as a plasma facing material has been studied. W-V alloys with different vanadium concentrations (5 and 10 wt %) manufactured by hot pressing (HP) were exposed to deuterium plasma (flux -4.6 x 10(21) m(-2)s(-1), fluence similar to 5.6 x 10(25) m(-2), ion energy similar to 60 eV, target temperature similar to 450 K) in the linear plasma device STEP at Beihang University. Three typical grains are observed on HP sintered W-V alloys and exhibit a significant effect on its performance under deuterium plasma irradiation. Surface blistering only occurs at Wenriched grains and is significantly mitigated in W-V alloys, especially in W-10 V, blistering is completely suppressed. On the other hand, deuterium retention dramatically increases in the W-V alloys due to vanadium addition. The deuterium retention in W-5 wt. % V is about 6.2 times more than that in rolled pure W, and this factor further increases to 6.9 when the V concentration rises to 10 wt %. Abstract:In this study, pure tungsten (W) fabricated by powder metallurgy and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) formed W-Ta and W-ZrC alloys were exposed to hydrogen plasma. Severe blistering was found in LPBFed W-Ta specimens due to a strong [111] crystallographic texture and the large number of particle-matrix interfaces in the LPBFed W-ZrC inhibits the blister growth. The retention of LPBFed W alloys is lower than that of pure W due to the presence of large columnar grains and cracks. The results highlight the capability of tailoring the microstructures of W alloys by the LPBF technique to achieve improved plasma-compatible performance.

Abstract:A large-size potassium-doped tungsten (KW) plate with a thickness of 15 mm was fabricated via powder metallurgy technology and hot rolling. In order to appraise the irradiation resistance of KW, the surface deuterium (D) blistering and D retention were studied on Fe11+ pre-damaged (0, 0.05 & 0.5 dpa) KW and pure tungsten (PW), which were exposed to ~60 eV and ~ 5 × 1021 m-2 s-1 D plasmas at 500 K to a fluence of ~ 5.76 × 1025 m-2. The results indicated that the KW alloy can inhibit the generation of vacancy defects after Fe11+ ion damage compared with PW because K bubbles can restrain the migration of W self-interstitial atoms and the accumulation of vacancies caused during Fe11+ ion irradiation. The Fe11+ ions pre-damage can relieve the surface blistering and D retention of PW and KW at the same time and the KW has a better effect on inhibiting D retention, while does not shows a significant advantage for inhibiting surface blistering compared with PW. Besides, the causes for the discrepancy in total D retention and surface morphology evolution of PW and KW were discussed in detail.

Abstract:Hydrogen isotope retention of tungsten in nuclear fusion reactors is one of the hot research issues all along. In this paper, tungsten samples in different rolled surfaces were polished by mechanical processing, subsequently subjected to D 2 + irradiation and thermal desorption. To better understand the experimental observations, this study also performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and investigated the effects of temperature, grain number, grain boundary density, and crystal orientation on hydrogen retention. It is found that the grain number and grain boundary density of rolled tungsten increase successively in RD/TD, RD/ND, and TD/ND surfaces. The RD/ND surface exhibits the best hydrogen radiation resistance, whereas the TD/ND surface is unsatisfactory. MD simulations further indicate that hydrogen retention is more obvious with the increase of grain density in tungsten, and hydrogen atoms are more easily enriched at the grain boundaries. With the increase in temperature, the retention of hydrogen atoms in monocrystalline/polycrystalline tungsten decreases significantly. The average implantation depth of H atoms is deepest along the and crystalline directions, which reveals that hydrogen retention is dependent on the crystal orientations. The good agreement between the experimental data and simulation results reveals that grain boundaries play an important role in hydrogen retention.

High-throughput Computing for Hydrogen Transport Properties in Ε-Zrh2

Abstract:In the zirconium-based composites, the transport properties of hydrogen atoms directly affect the precipitation process of the ε-ZrH2 phase. Therefore, the mechanism behind this phenomenon was explored by applying first-principle calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). For the first time, the diffusion model of hydrogen (H) in the body-centered tetragonal (BCT) structure of ε-ZrH2 was established. The high-throughput calculation results show that the diffusion coefficient is greatly affected by high temperatures. The pressure changes the structure to tetragonal distortion and increases the energy barrier of diffusion and decreases the diffusion coefficient. Y and Gd atoms have a repulsive effect on hydrogen atoms; this will increase the activation energy and diffusion coefficient and reduce the mobility of hydrogen atoms. The solute elements Cr, Fe, Nb, and Si increase the diffusion coefficient, while Ti, Ni, Y, Pt, and Gd decrease. These influence trends are closely related to the atomic radius by Spearman correlation coefficients analysis. This research provides a reference for the design of nuclear material cladding. The transport properties of H atoms in the ε-ZrH2 precipitated phase were calculated using high-throughput first-principles calculations, taking into account the effects of temperature and pressure as well as doping elements.
Irradiation hardening induced by blistering in tungsten due to low-energy high flux hydrogen plasma exposure

Abstract:In this work, the microstructure evolution in the near-surface of tungsten under hydrogen (H) plasma exposure conditions was observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), plasma focused ion beam (FIB) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Blisters, with existing dislocations distributed around obviously, were observed beneath the tungsten surface when the exposure temperature was 573 K, which was rarely reported in previous studies. However, H bombardment at 1273 K did not lead to the formation of blister-like microstructures. Correspondingly, irradiation hardening occurred after low temperature exposure, but not after high temperature exposure, according to the Berkovich nano-indentation experiments. In order to characterize the indentation size effect and irradiation hardening behavior of plasma-exposed materials, a mechanistic model was proposed for the hardness-depth relationship. A good agreement between the experimental indentation data and theoretical results revealed that plasma-induced dislocations play a dominant role in determining the increase of hardness for H plasma-exposed tungsten.
Behavior of Foreign Interstitial Hydrogen and Helium Atoms at Tungsten/Beryllium Interface from First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:The behavior of foreign interstitial hydrogen and helium atoms and its effect on the physical properties of the tungsten/beryllium interface structure were computationally studied by first-principles calculations. Briefly, as part of our study of helium irradiation damage and hydrogen detention, the following properties were calculated: (1) the electronic properties of the tungsten/beryllium interface structure with a single interstitial hydrogen or helium atom and He n vacancy or H n vacancy complexes, and (2) the isotropy (polycrystalline) elastic modulus (bulk, torsion, Young's modulus), anisotropy factor and minimum thermal conductivity of the previously described tungsten/beryllium interface systems. This study found that defect atoms are more likely to be concentrated in beryllium, but the tungsten layer is more sensitive to changes in mechanical properties caused by interstitial atoms. The ability of the beryllium vacancies to capture interstitial atoms is smaller than that of the tungsten vacancies. Based on the computational results, a preliminary assumption of the judgment of the tungsten/beryllium interface structure on the resistivity for plasma-facing materials is introduced. These computational studies provide a critical evaluation of the radiation resistivity and hydrogen retention of tungsten/beryllium interface materials. The calculated interface properties can be incorporated into radiation damage resistance property evaluation systems to develop and test tungsten-based composite materials.

Effect of thickness on the blistering of tungsten exposed to deuterium plasma

Abstract:Surface blistering on tungsten under deuterium plasma exposure has been well known and investigated intensively in the last decade. However, the mechanism of the blistering is still unclear. There have been mainly two different models proposed: the gas driven model and lateral stress model. In this work, we designed an experiment to address this issue. Tungsten disc samples were prepared using twin-jet electro-polishing. The specimens were under deuterium plasma exposure to study the thickness effect on the surface blistering. The results showed that blistering was rarely observed on the surface around the inner edge of the central perforation with thickness of ~ 100-500 nm. The blisters started to appear on the surface when the thickness was about 10 μm. Both the number and size of the blisters increased further on the outer surface with further increase in thickness. This trend was not obvious as the thickness increased up to above 180 μm. The diffusion depth of D in this work was calculated to be 8.5 μm. These results affirmed the lateral stress model as the surface blistering mechanism.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of blistering on hydrogen isotope (HI) retention, a series of deuterium plasma exposures were performed using recrystallized tungsten samples at 500 K with high fluences up to 1.0 × 1028 ions m−2 in the linear plasma device STEP. An increase of blister density and deuterium retention was observed with increasing plasma fluence. Based on the simulation of the thermal desorption spectra using TMAP, defects with different detrapping energies are found to be located at a depth of tens of microns, which coincides with the depth of the grain boundaries (GBs) close to the surface. The defect characterizations using transmission electron microscopy and positron annihilation Doppler broadening identified the defects as dislocation type and vacancy type, which were created by blistering. It is suggested that these defects can diffuse deep into the material, and the interaction between the diffusion of the defects and GBs causes a peculiar deuterium desorption spectrum over plasma fluences. Additionally, these blister-induced defects are the main source of deuterium retention. Regarding the effect of the blister-induced defects on deuterium retention, a blister-dominated retention mechanism is proposed to describe HI retention in conditions when blistering is severe as in this study. This investigation provides a new insight into the effect of blistering on retention and the modelling of retention in a tokamak edge plasma environment.

Effect of Heavy Ion Pre-Irradiation on Blistering and Deuterium Retention in Tungsten Exposed to High-Fluence Deuterium Plasma

Abstract:Surface blistering and deuterium (D) retention of heavy ion pre-irradiated (1 dpa) tungsten (W) exposed to low-energy (40 eV) and high-flux (1-2 x 10(22) D/m(2)s) D plasma has been investigated with low fluence of 0.1 x 10(27) D/m(2) and a high fluence of 2.2 x 10(27) D/m(2). Surface morphology observations show that a large number of blisters are formed on the undamaged W after low-fluence exposure while the area density of the blister will have significantly increased and blister bursting will be triggered in the case of high-fluence exposure. In contrast, the heavy ion pre-irradiation noticeably reduces the area density of blisters for both low-and high-fluence exposures. The thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) shows that the total D retention in the pre-damaged W is greater than that of the undamaged sample, and this trend is more significant with increasing fluence/duration of D plasma exposure. The results of positron annihilation Doppler broadening spectrometry (PA-DBS) and TDS indicate that a large number of vacancy-type defects, especially those with a higher trapping energy of D, are induced by the heavy ion pre-irradiation. The increasing defects/D-trap sites may result in two outcomes, the D concentration will disperse at each blister nucleation site and D inward diffusion is enhanced and, therefore, lead to the mitigation of D-induced blistering and increase the D retention. In addition, combined with the enhanced D inward diffusion caused by increasing exposure duration, the D retention is therefore much higher in the pre-damaged W in the case of high-fluence exposure. Mechanisms of helium irradiation blistering and surface deformation in tungsten

Abstract:Helium irradiation blistering in tungsten is of intense interest for plasma-facing materials under fusion-relevant conditions. Previous studies have revealed that the surface blistering is closely related to the evolution of subsurface microstructures (e.g., bubbles and cracks), but its dependence on the surface orientation and deformation remains unclear. The present work reports the helium irradiation blistering on the surface planes of tungsten {100}, {110} and {111}. A systematic study of helium irradiation blistering was conducted at room temperature by utilizing a Helium Ion Microscope. The cross-sectional microstructural analyses at different ion fluences confirmed that the blistering deformation starts with the nanocrack nucleation, initiated at the peak in the bubble depth distribution via interbubble fracture, and is followed by the gas buildup in a primary cavity. In addition, the comparison of blistering behaviors between 1-μm-diameter and 2-μm-diameter circular areas revealed that only the blisters formed on tungsten {100} can grow to a larger size, whereas those formed on tungsten {110} or {111} tend to become wrinkled or burst when the irradiated area increases. Combined with the micropillar compressions in a Scanning Electron Microscope, it was also found that the surface deformation is orientation-dependent and associated with the number, symmetry and distribution of effective slip systems in body-centered-cubic transition metals. Our studies provide new evidence and insights into the mechanisms of helium irradiation blistering and surface deformation in tungsten.

Abstract:Despite being a subject of long-term research on fusion-reactor structural materials, the behaviour of hydrogen in tungsten under plasma exposure remains unclear. Here, the explicit transmission electron microscopy observations for recrystallised W after hydrogen plasma exposure are successfully obtained. These are the first observations to show the intra-granular blisters are located on the {100} planes. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the hydrogen blister initiating at <100> dislocation core behaved similarly to those in experiment. We propose that the widely reported intra-granular hydrogen blisters are nucleated at the <100> edge dislocation core and develop along the (100) plane in tungsten.

Abstract:As the plasma facing material in the nuclear fusion reactor, tungsten has to bear the irradiation impact of high energy particles. The surface quality of tungsten may affect its irradiation resistance, and even affect the service life of fusion reactor. In this paper, tungsten samples with different surface quality were polished by mechanical processing, subsequently conducted by D2+ implantation and thermal desorption. D2+ implantation was performed at room temperature (RT) with the irradiation dose of 1 × 1021 D2+/m2 by 5 keV D2+ ions, and thermal desorption spectroscopy measurements were done from RT to 900 K. In addition, He irradiation was also performed by 50 eV He+ ions energy with the fluxes of 5.5 × 1021 m−2s−1 and 1.5 × 1022 m−2s−1, respectively. Results reveal that the hydrogen/helium irradiation behavior are both related to surface quality. Samples with high surface quality has superior D2+ retention behavior with less D2 retained after implantation. However, such samples are more likely to generate fuzzes on the surface after helium irradiation. Different morphologies (smooth, wavy, pyramids) after helium irradiation also demonstrates that the surface morphology is related to tungsten crystallographic orientation.
Effect of potassium doping and exposure temperature on the deuterium behavior in large-scale potassium-doped tungsten

Abstract:In order to meet the needs of future fusion power plants in engineering application, a newly large-volume potassium-doped tungsten (WK) plate with a thickness of 15 mm was prepared by powder metallurgy and hot rolling technology. Pure tungsten (PW) as a comparison material was prepared using the same preparation process. To figure out the effect of K doping and exposure temperature on D retention and blistering morphology in WK and PW, the high-flux (∼1022 m−2 s−1) and low energy (∼ 50 eV) D plasma exposure with different temperatures (423, 473, 523 and 573 K) was performed. The results show that there is serious surface blistering in both PW and WK at all exposure temperatures and PW forms D blisters larger in size but smaller in number compared with WK. The D retention in PW is significantly lower than that in WK at all exposure temperatures. Moreover, the evolution of D blisters and retention in WK is more sensitive to exposure temperature compared to PW. The effects of K doping and exposure temperature on blistering morphology and D retention were analyzed and discussed in detail.

Abstract:The hydrogen blistering phenomenon is one of the key issues for the target station of the accelerator-based neutron source. In the present study, the effect of monovacancies and divacancies defects on the solution, clustering and diffusion behaviors of H impurity in fcc-Pd were studied through first principles calculations. Our calculations prove that vacancies behave as an effective sink for H impurities. We found that, although the H-trap efficiency of the larger vacancy defect was reduced, its H-trap ability strengthened. There is a short-ranged area around the vacancy defects in which H impurities tend to diffuse to vacancy defects, gather and form hydrogen bubbles. Therefore, the characteristic of large vacancy defects formation in materials should be considered when screening anti-blistering materials for neutron-producing targets or when designing radiation resistant composite materials.
