Abstract:The decomposition of sulfur trioxide to produce sulfur dioxide and oxygen using a catalytic membrane reactor is technology that promises to improve the economic viability of the thermochemical water-splitting Iodine-Sulfur (IS) process for large-scale CO2-free hydrogen production. The chemical stability of membrane materials under SO3, however, is a significant challenge for this strategy. In this study, microporous membranes with a layered structure that consisted of a membrane support prepared from alpha-Al2O3, an intermediate layer prepared from silica-zirconia, and a top layer prepared from bis (triethoxysilyl)ethane-derived organosilica sols, were examined for stability under SO3 and for use in SO3/O-2 separation. An alpha-Al2O3 support that features SiO2-ZrO2 intermediate layers with large pore sizes and a high Si/Zr molar ratio showed excellent resistance to SO3, which was confirmed by N-2 adsorption, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). These membranes also demonstrated a negligible change in gas permeance before and after SO3 exposure. Subsequently, in binary-component gas separation at 550 degrees C, microporous organosilica-derived membranes achieved an O-2/SO3 selectivity of 10 (much higher than the Knudsen selectivity of 1.6) while maintaining a high O(2 )permeance of 2.5 x 10(-8) mol m(-2) s(-1) Pa-1.
Detailed Kinetic Modeling of Homogeneous H2SO4 Decomposition in the Sulfur–iodine Cycle for Hydrogen Production

Abstract:This study presents a detailed kinetic mechanism conducted by CHEMKIN for the homogeneous decomposition of SO3-H2O vapor in the sulfur-iodine cycle. The kinetic mechanism involving 27 reactions and 11 species was validated by experimental results. The effects of temperature, SO3/H2O ratio, residence time, and pressure on the decomposition rate of SO3 were studied by modeling. SO3 conversion rapidly increased with increasing temperature but only moderately increased with the addition of H2O in the kinetic process. The SO3 conversion ratio was slightly promoted with residence time at 1000 K and 1100 K. Meanwhile, SO3 conversion sharply increased with reaction time at 1300 K to 1400 K. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that elementary reactions (2) SO3 = SO2 + 0, (3) SO3 + 0 = SO2 + O-2, (12) 2HO(2) = H2O2 + O-2, and (13) HO2 = H + O-2 had important functions in SO3 decomposition. Catalytic Decomposition of Sulfuric Acid over CuO/CeO2 in the Sulfur–iodine Cycle for Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The present study is a follow-up of a previous one on a detailed kinetic modeling of the homogeneous decomposition of SO3-H2O vapor in the sulfur-iodine cycle for hydrogen production. In this paper, the activity and stability of complex metal oxides CexCu1-xO2-delta prepared by a sol gel method with x values ranging within 0.2-0.8 were studied for SO3-H2O vapor decomposition having a feed rate of space velocity of 5000 ml g(-1) h(-1) at 727 877 C. Sample Ce0.8Cu0.2O2-900 showed even higher activity than Pt catalyst at >800 degrees C and good stability at 850 degrees C for 60 h of continuous operation. The physicochemical properties and redox process of CuO/CeO2 catalysts for SO3 decomposition were characterized by temperature programmed reduction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. A redox mechanism was then proposed based on the characterization results and our previous homogeneous kinetic model. In this mechanism, both ceria-support and copper oxide clusters were reduced, oxidized, and interacted with each other. The overall effect was that CuO/CeO2 catalyst promoted the reaction of SO3 + O <-> SO2 + O-2, which was the limiting step of SO3 decomposition, by providing reactive oxygen. Abstract:Thermochemical iodine–sulfur (IS) cycle is one of the most promising massive hydrogen production methods with its high efficient and CO2 free credits. The decomposition reaction of sulfuric acid, one of the three reactions of which IS cycle is composed, is kinetically very slow and needs to proceed in the presence of catalyst. In this work, copper chromite (CuCr2O4) and copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) were prepared and employed as the catalysts for sulfuric acid decomposition, their activities were tested at various space velocities and temperatures, and their lifetimes were tested. To overcome the shortcoming of instability in long-time operation of Pt/Al2O3, Pt was loaded on SiC and its activity and lifetime were evaluated and compared with those of CuCr2O4 and CuFe2O4. Results showed that CuCr2O4 has the highest catalytic activity at higher temperature, while Pt/SiC presented the best stability. In addition, the reasons for the deactivation of these catalysts were explored. It was proposed that the deactivation was attributed to formation of sulfate, agglomeration and specific area decreasing.
Study on the High-Performance Catalyst for Sulfuric Acid Decomposition in the IS Cycle

Abstract:The iodine-sulfur cycle coupled with a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is a clean and efficient hydrogen production technology. The sulfuric acid decomposition reaction is the highest temperature process in the iodine-sulfur cycle, which requires 850 degrees C high temperature and catalyst to carry out at a high conversion rate. This study prepared a series of loaded sulfuric acid decomposition catalysts using anatase TiO2 and Ta2O5 as catalyst carriers and precious metal Pt as the active component. XRD, BET, and ICP-MS characterization of the catalysts demonstrated that the high calcination temperature could increase the crystallinity and content of the active components and decrease the specific surface area of the catalysts. The Pt/TiO2-850 catalyst showed good performance under different feed concentrations, reaction temperatures, and particle sizes. In addition, the scale-up production does not affect the Pt/TiO2-850 catalyst reaction performance. The Pt/TiO2-850 catalyst was tested in a bayonet-tube SiC reactor with a 100-h high throughput lifetime, which proved that the Pt/TiO2-850 catalyst has good stability.

Abstract:High endothermic heat of SO 3 decomposition reaction ( ΔHR ∼+ 98 kJ mol −1 ) can lead to significant thermal gradients (lower temperatures) inside the catalyst particle, depending up on mass diffusion, heat conduction and intrinsic reaction kinetics in the particle. The lower catalyst effectiveness (due to thermal gradients) leads to lower decomposition conversions in Packed Bed Reactors (PBR), which has to be maximized. In this study, a multi-scale model (Double Porosity Model, DPM) is used for the estimation of non-isothermal effectiveness factor ( η ) of Cr-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst types; less porous pellet and porous foam types. η obtained using DPM (foam∼0.249 and pellet∼0.147) are found to be in good agreement with experimental data and also with the results of derived model (Weisz model). Further, effect of porosity and size/diameter on η are studied and obtained the optimum porosity required for maximum η . The present study is useful for estimation and optimization of non-isothermal η of catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of sulfite is critical for the fixation of sulfite in the flue gas desulfurization process and is also an essential step related to the treatment of air and water pollution. This work designed and prepared a nano-MnO2-functionalized hydrophobic ceramic membrane with a hydrophobic surface by a hydrothermal method. The chemical composition and the nanostructure of the prepared MnO2 composite membranes were characterized using several identification techniques (X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). The results show that the prepared nano-MnO2 was sea urchin-like, the crystal form was β-MnO2, and it grows uniformly on the surface of the ceramic membrane. The molar ratios of Mn4+/Mn3+ and Olatt/Ototal were associated with high catalytic activity and enhanced with increasing preparation concentration. The catalytic ability of nano-MnO2 composite membranes to Na2SO3 was studied by the membrane dispersion-catalysis process. The catalytic efficiency with a loaded amount of 1.6–4.5 mg was 5.4–8.3 times higher than that without the catalyst. The free radical quenching experiment showed that SO5 •– was identified as the key free radical in the chain reaction. The oxidation kinetics of sulfite were investigated using a membrane dispersion reactor. The results showed that the catalyst, sulfite, and oxygen partial pressure reaction orders were 0.411, 0.243, and 0.640, respectively, and showed an apparent activation energy of 1.89 kJ·mol–1. Based on the three-phase reaction model analysis, sulfite oxidation was considered to be controlled by the mass transfer process of oxygen from the gas phase to the liquid phase.

Abstract:Iodine-sulfur(IS) cycle,with its high efficiency,is the most promising thermochemical water splitting process for industrial application.IS cycle includes three reactions,i.e.,Bunsen reaction,HI decomposition and sulfuric acid decomposition.Copper ferrite was screened out as the catalyst for sulfuric acid decomposition,and influences of reaction temperature,feed rate of sulfuric acid and dosage of the catalyst on sulfuric acid conversion were investigated.The results showed that sulfuric acid conversion in the presence of copper ferrite was 22% higher than that in the absence of catalyst,and was comparable to that of 1%Pt/Al_2O_3 at over 820 ℃.No decline in activity of the catalyst was observed in the earlier 9 hours.The catalyst samples before and after use were characterized by XRD,BET,TEM and TG-DTA.

Abstract:<p>Using the heat of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor to drive the thermochemical iodine-sulfur cycle is an important way to produce hydrogen on a large scale. The sulfuric acid decomposition is the key reaction affecting the hydrogen production efficiency in this method, so efficient sulfuric acid decomposition is needed. The present study focuses on the temperature rise, phase change and chemical reactions of sulfuric acid in a bayonet heat exchanger. The evaporation-condensation model in a steady temperature field was used to simulate the different stages of the phase change process with the species transport model used to calculate the product proportions. Finally, the effects of two catalyst arrangements on the decomposition fraction were analyzed. The results show that the temperature in the catalytic core area reaches 1100 K which provides the heat required for the decomposition reaction. When the sulfuric acid flow rate is 0.36 kg/h, the two-phase flow section is about 0.22 m long to promote better heat transfer. The simulations show that square and circular catalysts give sulfuric acid decomposition fractions of 65% and 57%. The pressure drop of the two catalyst arrangements is almost the same, while the square catalyst has a higher decomposition fraction, which can improve the economics. This study provides a reference for optimizing catalyst selection based on the flow and heat transfer rates.</p>

Abstract:This study reports on the ozone catalytic oxidation of dimethyl sulfide; a major odor material in wastewater facilities. A xenon excimer lamp (XEL) was used for ozone generation, and iodine compounds (I− and IO3−) were utilized as a catalyst. The three types of activated carbon tested as catalysts were: activated carbon impregnated with iodine compounds and sulfate (AC-I/S), activated carbon impregnated with iodine (AC-I) and activated carbon without impregnation (AC). Only AC-I/S had catalytic activity in the dynamic adsorption experiment. The breakthrough time of dimethyl sulfide increased by 10 times upon adding ozone to the AC-I/S. Catalyst characterization by pH measurement and XPS analysis suggested that the catalytic activity of iodine compounds was influenced by the surface acidity. These results suggest that the XEL and AC-I/S are applicable for ozone catalytic oxidation in gas treatments.

Abstract:Thermochemical sulfur iodine cycle for H2S-splitting is applied for hydrogen and sulfur production. Thermodynamics study on main reactions was investigated. At the pressure of 1atm, reactions between hydrogen sulfide and sulfuric acid operating above the temperature of 409 K progress completely and produce abundant sulfur dioxide. The critical temperature goes down corresponding to the decrease of pressure. Actually, hydrogen sulfide reacts with the solute H2SO4 in sulfuric acid. Both sulfur and sulfur dioxide are produced when the molar ratio of H2SO4/H2S is between 1.00 and 2.98, while all sulfur oxidizes to sulfur dioxide if H2SO4/H2S exceed 2.98. According to the thermodynamics results of Bunsen reaction, the presence of excess water and iodine will promote the reaction, and the temperature should below 383K for the sake of system implementation.

Abstract:<p>Accurate simulations of sulfuric acid decomposition are important for the design and control of sulfuric acid decomposers, which are key equipments for nuclear hydrogen production with the iodine-sulfur cycle driven by heat from a very high temperature gas cooled reactor. The present study included sulfuric acid decomposition experiments with measurements of the decomposition fraction and temperature distribution to verify a user defined boiling model that relaxes the coupling between the phase transition and the chemical reactions modeled using a species transport model based on computational fluid dynamics. The heat transfer in the bayonet heat exchanger was simulated numerically including the liquid sulfuric acid phase change, the reversible sulfuric acid decomposition reaction, and the sulfur trioxide decomposition into sulfur dioxide in the catalyst zone. The results show that the proposed method agrees well with experimental data. The sulfuric acid needs to completely decompose before entering the catalyzer to make full use of the catalyst. The decomposition fraction of sulfuric acid decreases significantly with increasing flow rate due to the inadequate retention time in the catalyst zone. The sulfuric acid decomposition rate increases and then tends towards a stable rate with increasing velocity. This study provides a useful model for engineering designs of high-performance sulfuric acid decomposers.</p>

Abstract:The effect of several catalyst supports with large specific surface area (such as SiC, Al2O3, SiC-Al2O3 ball, and SiC Al2O3) on catalytic activity was evaluated in this study. CuO -CeO2 supported on SiC Al2O3 exhibited high stability and activity, which was considerably close to the thermodynamic equilibrium curve at 625 degrees C during the stability test for 50 h. The SO3 decomposition temperature decreased from 750 degrees C to 625 degrees C. SiC-Al2O3- contained numerous micropores and mesopores and had a large specific area, indicating strong adsorption, as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption measurement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the surface of SiC Al(2)O(3)consisted of Al2O3, SiC, and SiO2 and that the cerium oxide surface had the largest number of defects. Temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) results indicated that the cerium copper oxides on the surface of powdered SiC-Al2O3 had the strongest redox potential and that CuO had the lowest reduction temperature. Study on Cuo-Ceo2/Sic Catalysts in the Sulfur-Iodine Cycle for Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The structure and activity of ceria-copper oxides supported on nanometer silicon carbide (nano-SiC) particles for sulfuric acid decomposition were studied. The promoting activities and stabilities of CuO-CeO2 complex oxides loaded on nano-SiC grains were prominently higher than those of CuO-CeO2 without carriers, especially at <800 degrees C. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed that copper-cerium composite oxides grains were well dispersed and fixed on the surface of SiC particle, and the average sizes of CuO-CeO2 complex oxides carried by SiC particles were considerably smaller than those of CuO-CeO2 without carriers. Based on the analysis of HRTEM images, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra, and infrared radiation (IR) pattern, the majority of SiC surfaces were converted to SiO2 layers, in which CeO2 grains immobilized by coordination bonding Ce-O-Si bridges. From the temperature programmed reduction (TPR) patterns, compared with those of CuO-CeO2 without carrier, the reduction temperature of CuO to Cu2O in CuO-CeO2/SiC catalysts was lowered, especially at (Ce + Cu)/SiC atomic ratio of 5 mol.%. The catalysts also showed relatively high activities at 727 degrees C for 20 h of continuous operation. Abstract:As the main fission products of nuclear power plants, radioactive iodine isotopes are of great concern because of their great harm to public safety. In this work, a nanocomposite of bismuth sulfide coated with the electrospinning SiO2 nanofibers with a diameter of about 280 nm nanostructure-based membranes (Bi2S3@SiO2) was successfully prepared to dispose of gaseous iodine. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of Bi2S3@SiO2 for iodine can be up to 1180 mg g–1, which is higher than the commercial silver-exchanged zeolite (AgZ) and other bismuth-based adsorbents. Chemisorption is the major adsorption behavior of iodine capture. Thermogravimetric analysis results demonstrated that the Bi2S3@SiO2 nanocomposites were stable up to 300 °C before and after capturing iodine. X-ray diffraction results revealed that BiSI was initially formed and then transformed to BiI3. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the sulfur element remains in the samples after interacting with iodine, and X-ray absorption near-edge spectra further confirmed that its oxidation states are a mixture of S0, S3+, and S6+. The oxidation states of bismuth and iodine are Bi3+ and I–, respectively, revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The reactions between Bi2S3@SiO2 nanocomposites and I2 vapor are as follows: I2 was reduced to be I– and the BiI3 crystalline phase is the final form; S2– in Bi2S3 was oxidized to higher valences (S0, S3+, and S6+), and amorphous phases are their final forms. The research results demonstrated that the nanostructure-based membranes prepared by this work would be a promising candidate nanomaterial for capturing iodine in the plant off-gas streams.

Abstract:The copper-cerium composite oxides supported on silicon carbide (SiC) catalysts (CuO-CeO2/SiC) for sulfuric acid decomposition were studied in sulfur-iodine (SI or IS) cycle. The influence of calcination temperatures (800 degrees C-1000 degrees C) of CuO-CeO2/SiC catalysts on their activities and morphology were investigated in this study. The activity of CuO-CeO2/SiC was prominently higher than that of CuO-CeO2 composite oxides catalyst. The SO3 conversion ratio of CuO-CeO2/SiC catalyst increased with calcination temperature from 800 degrees C to 900 degrees C, while decreased with calcination temperature at 900 degrees C-1000 degrees C. XRD pattern, TEM (HRTEM) images and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectra revealed that copper-cerium composite oxides were well dispersed and immobilized on the surface of SiC grains. XRD pattern showed that the accelerated transformation of SiC crystals to amorphous SiO2 and the rapid expansion of CeO2 sub-grains at the calcination temperature of 900 degrees C-1000 degrees C, as well as the accelerated amorphization of CuO crystals at 800 degrees C-900 degrees C. The agglomeration of catalysts with sintering temperature was also proven by the BET test. At a higher calcination temperature, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of Cu-2p spectra revealed the reduction of more Cu2+ in the process of SiC oxidation. According to TEM (HRTEM), XPS, and infrared radiation, the amorphous SiO2 was produced by the oxidation of superficial SiC particles, and the thickness of the SiO2 layers on SiC grains increased with the calcination temperature. Abstract:The effects of SO2 flow rate, SO2 mole fraction, iodine content and water content on the Bunsen reaction were experimentally studied for the thermochemical iodine-sulfur cycle for hydrogen production. One multistage reaction mechanism on the Bunsen reaction has been hypothesized, considering the kinetic characteristics. The appearance of a liquid liquid equilibrium (LLE) phase separation was in the range of 20-40 min in the apparatus we chose. An increase in iodine content and a decrease in water content improved LLE separation characteristics to the H2SO4 phase and HIx phase. The H2S formation side reaction easily occurred with the increase in water content and decrease in iodine content. The optimal operating condition that the inlet SO2 mole fraction exceeds 0.12 coupled with initial I-2/H2O molar ratio exceeding 0.284 has been proposed based on the experimental results, for the criteria of improving the separation characteristics and preventing side reactions.

Abstract:Magnesium sulfite oxidation is a crucial process in wet desulfurization which inhibits the re-emission of SO2 efficiently, and the development of catalyst with high activity and stability is still a challenge. In this study, a lattice confined Co-based catalyst was constructed through the in situ growth of Co active sites in MCM-48 molecular sieves (Co-MCM-48). The anchoring of separated Co sites in MCM-48 matrix favored to enhance the MgSO3 oxidation and inhibit the leaching of Co element. From the atom-level, the sulfite adsorption was enhanced on the isolated and defected Co sites, and the (SO3-)-S-center dot intermediate was considerably easy to generate due to the enhanced loss of electrons in sulfite. Meanwhile, the adsorption of O-2 was improved by Co-MCM-48, and the adsorbed O-2 (O-2(ad) ) accelerated the production of (SO5-)-S-center dot radical by the process of (SO3-)-S-center dot + O-2(ad) -> (SO5-)-S-center dot, which play key roles for the fastened oxidation of MgSO3.

Abstract:When mixing SO with O-2 in N-2, Ne, or Ar, an end-on complex OS-OO forms in the gas phase and can subsequently be trapped at cryogenic temperatures (2.8-15.0 K). Upon infrared light irradiation, OS-OO converts to SO3 and SO2 + O with the concomitant formation of a rare 1,2,3-dioxathiirane 2-oxide, i.e., cyclic OS(=O)O. Unexpectedly, the ring-closure of (OS)-O-16-(OO)-O-18-O-18 yields a ca. 2:1 mixture of cyclic (OS)-O-18(=O-16)O-18 and (OS)-O-16(=O-18)O-18. The characterization of OS-OO and OS(=O)O with IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy is supported by high-level ab initio computations.

Abstract:The sulfuric acid decomposer is the key equipment of the iodine-sulfur cycle to achieve hydrogen production utilizing high temperature of very high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (VHTR). This study discusses sulfuric acid decomposer design and pipeline layout to improve the performance of the sulfuric acid decomposer based on a shell-and-tube heat exchanger with a bayonet heat exchanger as the core. The finite volume method was used to numerically calculate the heat transfer, temperature distribution, baffle layout, and sulfur trioxide decomposition rate in the sulfuric acid decomposer. The results show that the convective heat transfer coefficient of the fully developed section of the sulfuric acid decomposer for the given conditions is about 10 W center dot m(-2)center dot K-1 and the average temperature of the sulfuric acid in the catalyst region is about 1040 K. For the design, the inlet manifold plate effectively distributes the inlet helium, while the staggered baffles in the shell and tube heat exchanger increase the heat transfer area and improve the helium distribution to enhance the heat transfer. The prediction shows that the sulfur trioxide decomposition rate is about 60% in the catalyst region under design VHTR condition, which is in agreement with experimental measurement under corresponding temperature and space velocity. The results provide a reference for the design of sulfuric acid decomposers for VHTR.
