Abstract:A simple microemulsion-based method has been developed to synthesize ZnCo2(C2O4)(3) nanowires that can be transformed to porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires under annealing conditions. The morphology of porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires can be tuned by the initial ZnCo2(C2O4)(3) nanowires and the annealing temperatures. The as-synthesized porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires have been applied as anode materials of Li-ion batteries, which show superior capacity and cycling performance. The porous one-dimensional (ID) nanostructures and large surface area are responsible for the superior performance. Moreover, it is indicated that porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires synthesized at low annealing temperature (500 degrees C) show larger capacity and better cycling performance than that prepared at high annealing temperature (700 degrees C), because of their higher porosity and larger surface area.

Abstract:Porous Si@C coaxial nanotubes were prepared by layer-by-layer assembly on ZnO nanorod templates and subsequent magnesiothermic reaction. ZnO nanorods have been firstly synthesized by a seed-assisted method, which can act as the optimum template to deposit SiO2 and carbon layers, respectively. After the magnesiothermic reaction, the compact SiO2 layer turns into a porous Si layer, leading to the Si@C coaxial nanotubes. The porous Si@C coaxial nanotubes demonstrate excellent cycling stability and high specific capacity as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which are extremely better than bare Si nanotubes and bulk Si@C nanocomposites. The outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to the fact that the coaxial nanotubular structures can provide enough space to accommodate the large volume changes and give more reaction sites for lithium ions, while the introduction of the carbon layer can enhance the electronic conductivity and stabilize the Si–electrolyte interface and nanotubular structure during the lithiation/delithiation process.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:ZnO@TiO2 core-shell nanotube arrays are fabricated combining the anodization and atomic layer deposition techniques. In this process, thin ZnO layers are coated onto the inner wall surface of the TiO2 nanotubes. The novel three-dimensional material is directly used as anode for lithium ion batteries and exhibits excellent specific capacity, cycling performance, and rate capability. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the combination of high specific capacity of ZnO and the structural stability of TiO2 nanotube arrays. On one hand, the ZnO layer increases the areal capacity of TiO2 nanotube arrays from 74 to 170 mu Ah cm(-2) after 200 cycles. On the other hand, the special nanotubular structure not only buffers the volume change of ZnO during cycling and but also facilitates rapid ion diffusion.

Abstract:Hydrothermal treatment of cobalt nitrate in the presence of ZnO nanorod templates results in the generation of free-standing CoO-ZnO composite arrays on a copper substrate. The result shows that tuning the molar concentration of cobalt nitrate can controllably prepare CoO-ZnO nanotube and ZnCo2O4 hierarchical nanorod structures. The electrochemical properties of the resultant nanorod and nanotube arrays are investigated. Due to the short insertion and extraction length for lithium ions, the free space between the adjacent tubes or rods, and the high contact area, the as-prepared one-dimensional CoO-ZnO composites exhibit excellent cycling performance and high capacities as anode materials for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Well-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated from anodization by a subsequent heat treatment. Rate performance and electrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotube arrays were studied intensively. The electrode exhibits excellent rate capabilities at various rates with an average coulombic efficiency reaching 95.6%. It is obvious that TiO2 nanotube array possesses high rate capability and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:By using ZnO nanorods as an ideal sacrificial template, one-dimensional (1-D) ZnS nanotubes with a mean diameter of 10 nm were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The phase composition and microstructure of the ZnS nanotubes were characterized by using XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron micrograph), and TEM (transmission electronic microscopy) analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen sorption isotherms measurements were also used to study the information on the surface chemical compositions and specific surface area of the sample. The prepared ZnS nanotubes were used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Results show that the ZnS nanotubes deliver an impressive prime discharge capacity as high as 950 mAh/g. The ZnS nanotubes also exhibit an enhanced cyclic performance. Even after 100 charge/discharge cycles, the discharge capacity could still remain at 450 mAh/g. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were also carried out to evaluate the ZnS electrodes.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ideal class of precursors or templates to build up transition metal based composites with unique architectures and high electrochemical performance for energy storage applications. In this work, a hybrid hollow nanoarchitecture made of ultrasmall zinc oxide nanodots (less than 5 nm in diameter) and carbon with 3D ordered hollow structure have been synthesized through a simple surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method followed by thermal annealing treatment. This 3D ordered hollow structure not only offers good electronic transportation routes and ionic conductive channels, but also effectively relieves the stress and mitigates the volume variation during lithiation/delithiation process as reflected by the high cycle stability and excellent rate capability as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Benefitting from the rational design of 3D hollow structure and the synergistic effect between the ultrasmall ZnO nanodots and carbon framework, the ZnO/C hollow structures exhibit decent electrochemical performance of lithium storage with excellent cycling stability (a reversible capacity of 919 mA h/g over 100 cycles at 100 mA/g) and enhanced rate capability (567 mA h/g at high current density of 2 A/g). In addition, it also can deliver a capacity of 741 mA h/g at 500 mA/g after 120 cycles. These results uncover a facile route for the material design for energy application. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:TiO2-based anodes are highly desired because of their significant safety with good structural stability during charge/discharge. However, the intrinsic poor conductivity of TiO2 restricts its capacity cycling at a high rate. Herein, we present a good rate-performance anode consisting of Ni-encapsulated TiO2 nanotube array growing on three-dimensional Ni scaffold. By using atomic layer deposition (ALD), a TiO2 layer was coated onto Ni nanotubes which were fabricated using ZnO nanorod array template. The Ni-encapsulated TiO2 nanotube array anode shows a capacity of 188 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. The metal Ni encapsulated in the TiO2 nanotubes provides an efficient pathway for rapid electron transfer. It is believed that the metal-encapsulated composite design presented here would be significant for many possible anodes and cathodes. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report a novel "sacrificial template-accelerated hydrolysis" (STAH) approach to the synthesis of iron oxide-based nanotube arrays including hematite alpha-Fe2O3 and magnetite Fe3O4 on centimeter-scale conducting alloy substrates. ZnO nanowire arrays are chosen its the inexpensive and sacrificial templates that do not contribute to the component of final iron oxide nanotubes but can be in situ dissolved by the acid produced from the Fe3+ precursor hydrolysis. interestingly, the ZnO template dissolution in turn accelerates the Fe3+ hydrolysis, which is essential to initiating the nanotube formation. Such a STAH approach provides a morphology-reservation transformation, when various shaped ZnO templates are adopted. Moreover, by introducing glucose into the precursor solution, we also successfully obtain carbon/hematite(C/alpha-Fe2O3) composite nanotube arrays on large-area flexible alloy substrate, with a large number of pores and uniform carbon distribution at a nanoscale in the nanotube walls. These arrays have been demonstrated as excellent additive-free anode materials for lithium ion batteries in terms of good cycling performance up to 150 times (659 mA h g(-1)) and outstanding rate capability. Our result presents not only a new route for inorganic nanotube formation but also an insight for rational design of advanced electrode materials for electrochemical batteries and sensors.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are regarded as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities compared with commercial graphite. Unfortunately, the implementation of such novel anodes is hampered by their large volume changes during the Li+ insertion and extraction process and their low electric conductivities. Herein, we report a specifically designed anode architecture to overcome such problems, that is, mesoporous peapod-like Co3O4@ carbon nanotube arrays, which are constructed through a controllable nanocasting process. Co3O4 nanoparticles are confined exclusively in the intratubular pores of the nanotube arrays. The pores between the nanotubes are open, and thus render the Co3O4 nanoparticles accessible for effective electrolyte diffusion. Moreover, the carbon nanotubes act as a conductive network. As a result, the peapod-like Co3O4@carbon nanotube electrode shows a high specific capacity, excellent rate capacity, and very good cycling performance.
Rational design of 3D N-doped carbon nanosheet framework encapsulated ultrafine ZnO nanocrystals as superior performance anode materials in lithium ion batteries

Abstract:Transition metal oxides have been extensively studied as anodes in lithium ion batteries due to their high specific capacity. However, they face some challenges to realize their practical applications owing to their inherent drawbacks of poor electronic conductivity and large volume expansion during charge/discharge. In this work, a facile synthesis of ultrafine ZnO nanocrystals encapsulated in a 3D N-doped carbon nanosheet framework (ZnO-NCNF) is reported to tackle these issues and improve the performance. The ZnO-NCNF-700 composite maintains a reversible capacity of 770 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) after 1000 cycles. At 1000 mA g(-1), a capacity of 572 mA h g(-1) is retained after 750 cycles. Even at higher current density of 10 000 mA g(-1), it still possesses a capacity of 148 mA h g(-1). Moreover, it maintains the structural integrity and its ion-diffusion coefficient increases by over three orders of magnitude. Also, the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811)/ZnO-NCNF-700 full cell maintains a capacity of 531 mA h g(-1) after 60 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance might be ascribed to the reduced charge-transfer resistance, boosted Li+ diffusivity, mitigated breakage and structural integrity that originated from the decreased particle size and NCNF architecture. This work provides more insight into the lithium storage of ultrafine ZnO nanocrystals as anode electrode materials, and opens a new and facile strategy for developing a promising ZnO anode material for practical applications in lithium ion batteries.
SnO2-MnO2-SnO2 sandwich-structured nanotubes as high-performance anodes of lithium ion battery

Abstract:SnO2–MnO2–SnO2 sandwich-structured nanotubes are synthesized by uniformly coating SnO2 nanoparticles on both the inner and outer walls of α-MnO2 nanotubes via a simple wet-chemical route. As the anodes of lithium ion batteries, SnO2–MnO2–SnO2 sandwich-structured nanotubes exhibit high reversible capacity, cyclability and rate capability. The reversible capacity of the nanocomposites is 847.5mAh/g and retains 716.0mAh/g after 50 cycles, which is higher than that of α-MnO2 or SnO2. At 20C rate, SnO2–MnO2–SnO2 sandwich-structured nanotubes can deliver a capacity of 224.2mAh/g. Such excellent performances can be attributed to the synergistic effect and the tubular nanostructures. Our results imply that one-dimensional sandwich-structured nanocomposites have potential applications in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of order-aligned Mn3O4 nanostructures by electrochemically depositing Mn3O4 on a pre-fabricated Cu nanowire array current collector. When used as an electrode for lithium-ion batteries, it exhibits a capacity up to 637 and 494 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at a current rate of 10 C and 20 C (10 C = 9.4 A g−1), respectively. The excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability can be attributed to the good electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the order-aligned nanostructured electrodes. The relationship between the thickness of the Mn3O4 film and its electrochemical performance has also been investigated.

Abstract:Unique TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) grafted with MnO2 nanosheets is synthesized for the first time as an anode for Li battery. The character of the special structure is MnO2 nanosheets grown on the outer, inner surface and tip of the TNAs. The composite combines the advantages both from MnO2 with high capacity (1230 mA h g(-1)) and TNAs with excellent cycle stability and superior electrical conductivity. Besides, the MnO2 nanosheet layer with different thickness on the surface of TNAs is fabricated through controlling hydrothermal reaction time and it is found that the thickness has a significant impact on capacity, cycle performance and conductivity. Additionally, a very abnormal phenomenon that we call "late rise of capacity" is discovered in the capacity test after several hundreds of cycle times, for which a possible mechanism is proposed according to material characterization. Abstract:Cu6Sn5-coated TiO2 nanotube arrays, a novel design for an anode material in lithium ion batteries, were prepared by electroless plating techniques. In this design, a Cu6Sn5 layer was coated on to the inner wall surface of TiO2 nanotubes. The hollow structure of the nanotubes was still retained, although the inner diameter of the nanotubes decreased from 100 nm to 50 nm. The as-prepared Cu6Sn5-coated TiO2 nanotube arrays combine the merits of the high specific capacity of tin and the structural stability of TiO2 nanotubes. The nanotubular structure allows both facile strain relaxation of tin and rapid mass transport, leading to greatly enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of specific capacity, cycle life and rate capability.

Abstract:Herein, Cu nanowires are utilized as a self-sacrificial template to synthesize CuO hollow nanotubes (HTs) by a facile wet chemical method. The HTs with a diameter 549 ± 83.6 nm and rough surface, are constructed by well-distributed curved ultrathin nanosheets. When employed as an anode electrode in Li-ion batteries, the resulting CuO HTs exhibited a high specific capacity of 736 mAh g−1, superior rate performance and high cyclic performance. The excellent electrochemical performance of CuO HTs can be attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant unimpeded diffusion paths and high electron transfer rate due to the unique two-dimensional nanosheets structure and hollow structure. Moreover, the hollow structure provides enough space to accommodate volumetric changes and structural strain during the charge/discharge process, resulting in excellent cyclic stability. The current report presents a novel strategy to develop high-performance anodes for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The performance of anodes of lithium-ion batteries relies largely on the architecture and composition of the hybrid active materials. We present a two-step, seed-free, solution-based method for the direct growth of hierarchical charantia-like TiO2/Fe2O3 core/shell nanotube arrays on carbon cloth substrates. An ultrahigh loading of the nanomaterial on carbon fibers was achieved with this method without the use of a binder. This three-dimensional porous hollow architecture and its direct contact with the CC current collector ensure an efficient electronic pathway. The hollow TiO2 framework effectively protects the hierarchical charantia-like TiO2/Fe2O3 hollow core/shell arrays from collapsing because of its negligible volume change during cycling. Meanwhile, the self-assembled α-Fe2O3 hollow nanospheres guarantee a large capacity and contact area with the electrolyte. This flexible anode with a 3D porous charantia-like hollow architecture exhibits high cycle performance, reversible capacity, and rate capability. These nanotube arrays maintain a high reversible capacity of 875 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1. This simple, cost-effective, and scalable electrode fabrication strategy can be implemented in the fabrication of high-performance wearable energy storage devices.
