Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of nanostructured hybrid CoO/Cu electrodes through electrodeposition and sputtering. When applied as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the CoO/Cu nanowire arrays deliver long cycle life and enhanced power performance than CoO/Cu films. The large accessible surface area and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Hierarchical CoO nanosheets are grown on copper foils, by combining electro-deposition and selfsustained hydrothermal treatments and directly used as binder free anode electrodes of LIBs. CoO nanosheets are similar to 50 nm in thickness with several micrometers in width. The CoO nanosheets deposited on the copper foils were found to be single phase. The electrode delivers a capacity of similar to 637 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at 0.1C and exhibits excellent rate capability, owing to the special hierarchical structure, preferable accommodation of strain, good conductivity and fast lithium ion diffusion. The capacity can be improved to similar to 704 mA h g(-1) after carbon coating. The improved performance is investigated in detail. The results suggest that ameliorative conductivity, pseudocapacitance and the higher-oxidation-state component are responsible for the high capacity. More significantly, the strategy of CoO nanosheets fabrication not only can be extended to other substrates, such as carbon foams, carbon paper and carbon cloth, but can be applied to other materials, such as Fe3O4, NiO, etc. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Three-dimensional Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays are prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanowire arrays and subsequent deposition of SnO2 and Ag by radiofrequency sputtering. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays show good cycling and rate performance, compared to corresponding Co3O4 arrays, Co3O4@SnO2 arrays, and Co3O4@SnO2@Ag planar electrodes. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the three-dimensional core-shell nanostructures and the addition of Ag, which can improves the electrical conductivity and structure stability during the charge/discharge process.

Highly Ordered SnO2 Nanopillar Array as Binder-Free Anodes for Long-Life and High-Rate Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:SnO2, a typical transition metal oxide, is a promising conversion-type electrode material with an ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity of 1494 mAh g−1. Nevertheless, the electrochemical performance of SnO2 electrode is limited by large volumetric changes (~300%) during the charge/discharge process, leading to rapid capacity decay, poor cyclic performance, and inferior rate capability. In order to overcome these bottlenecks, we develop highly ordered SnO2 nanopillar array as binder-free anodes for LIBs, which are realized by anodic aluminum oxide-assisted pulsed laser deposition. The as-synthesized SnO2 nanopillar exhibit an ultrahigh initial specific capacity of 1082 mAh g−1 and maintain a high specific capacity of 524/313 mAh g−1 after 1100/6500 cycles, outperforming SnO2 thin film-based anodes and other reported binder-free SnO2 anodes. Moreover, SnO2 nanopillar demonstrate excellent rate performance under high current density of 64 C (1 C = 782 mA g−1), delivering a specific capacity of 278 mAh g−1, which can be restored to 670 mAh g−1 after high-rate cycling. The superior electrochemical performance of SnO2 nanoarray can be attributed to the unique architecture of SnO2, where highly ordered SnO2 nanopillar array provided adequate room for volumetric expansion and ensured structural integrity during the lithiation/delithiation process. The current study presents an effective approach to mitigate the inferior cyclic performance of SnO2-based electrodes, offering a realistic prospect for its applications as next-generation energy storage devices.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides are attracting considerable attention as anodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their high reversible capacities. However, the drastic volume change and inferior electrical conductivity greatly retard their widespread applications in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, three-dimensional nanoporous composites of CoOx (CoO and Co3O4) quantum dots and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon are fabricated by a precipitation method. The carbon prepared by carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 can greatly enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite anodes. CoOx quantum dots anchored firmly on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon can effectively inhibit the aggregation and volume change of CoOx quantum dots during lithiation/delithiation processes. The nanoporous structure can shorten the ion diffusion paths and maintain the structural integrity upon cycling. Meanwhile, kinetics analysis reveals that a capacitance mechanism dominates the lithium storage capacity, which can greatly enhance the electrochemical performance. The composite anodes show a high discharge capacity of 1873 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g–1, ultralong cycle life (1246 mAh g–1 after 900 cycles at 1000 mA g–1), and improved rate performance. This work may provide guidelines for preparing cobalt oxide-based anodes for LIBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Octahedral Co3O4 particles threaded by ultra-long multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) arrays were prepared by a hydrothermal process and subsequent calcination. The Co3O4 octahedron with the (111) facets attaches to MWCNTs uniformly and closely. The composite can be used as an integrated anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) without any other additives (such as conductive additives and polymer binder), which exhibits a high reversible capacity of 725 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1), and excellent cyclic stability without capacity degradation over 100 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g(-1). The high performance can be attributed to the unique structure: (i) the ultra-long MWCNT array facilitates fast electron transfer; (ii) the tight adhesion between Co3O4 and MWCNTs prevents particle drifting and agglomeration; (iii) the free space between MWCNTs promotes fast ion transport and alleviates the large volume variation during discharge-charge process. This work demonstrates the great potential of MWCNT arrays as substrate and provides insights for the design and direct use of MWCNT array-based materials in LIBs, which will be helpful for future development of high-performance electrode materials.

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of a novel cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) hierarchical nanostructure, in which crystalline core-amorphous shell Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a bimodal size distribution are uniformly dispersed on ultrathin Co 3 O 4 nanosheets. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared Co 3 O 4 hierarchical electrodes delivered high lithium storage properties comparing to the other Co 3 O 4 nanostructures, including a high reversible capacity of 1053.1 mAhg −1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C (1 C = 890 mAg −1 ), good cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Co3O4-based anodes are challenged by low rate capability and poor cyclic stability, arising from the inherent structural instability of the electrode alongside difficulties for electrolyte penetration within the electrode interior. A potential solution to address this obstacle is through the meticulous design of electrode architecture. With this in mind, ultrathin nanosheets adorned with finely honeycomb-like Co3O4 porous balls featuring cavities were synthesized via in-situ incorporating a Co2+ source and SiO2 precursor solution. The Co3O4 porous balls, fashioned in honeycomb-like fashion, yielded a consistent charge capacity of 726 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 over 230 cycles, and an impressive 540 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 over 500 cycles, indicative of remarkable rate capabilities. The exceptional electrochemical performance credited to the distinctive porous honeycomb-like structure and cavities among the balls. This structure acts as a buffer against volume change during charge-discharge processes, guaranteeing well-maintained electrode structure and strong cyclic stability. Furthermore, the ultrathin and intricately porous nanosheets minimize the travel length of ions and charges, facilitating access to additional active sites. These notable features have the ability to augment rate performance and lithium storage capabilities.

Abstract:Cobalt-based layered metal compound (Co(OH)(OCH3)) nanoplatelets synthesized by a facile solvothermal method were systemically characterized and investigated as an anode material for Li-ion batteries for the first time. It can deliver a high capacity of 1150 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA and stay stable even after 160 cycles. It also shows high rate performance and reversibility. Its good electrochemical performance might be attributed to the unique layered structure with large layer spacing, 2D nanoplatelet-like morphology, and the void space between the nanoplatelets. Abstract:The traditional methods to prepare electrodes of lithium-ion batteries need to add binders which reduce the capacity of electrode materials. In this work, CoO nanosheets/CoO film as self-supported anodes were designed and prepared. The CoO nanosheets/CoO film exhibited better electrochemical performance and structural stability than CoO nanosheets directly grown on copper foil and most previous CoO-based electrode materials. The CoO film prepared by magnetron sputtering firmly fixed the nanosheets prepared by the hydrothermal method on the film. The buffer layer of CoO film can prevent CoO nanosheets from crushing and falling off, thus greatly improving the electrochemical performance of this kind of material. The CoO nanosheets/CoO film has great potential applications in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Cobalt sulfide (CoS2) is considered one of the most promising alternative anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) by virtue of its remarkable electrical conductivity, high theoretical capacity, and low cost. However, it suffers from a poor cycling stability and low rate capability because of its volume expansion and dissolution of the polysulfide intermediates in the organic electrolytes during the battery charge/discharge process. In this study, a novel porous carbon/CoS2 composite is prepared by using nano metal-organic framework (MOF) templates for high-preformance LIBs. The as-made ultrasmall CoS2 (15 nm) nanoparticles in N-rich carbon exhibit promising lithium storage properties with negligible loss of capacity at high charge/discharge rate. At a current density of 100 mA g(-1), a capacity of 560 mA h g(-1) is maintained after 50 cycles. Even at a current density as high as 2500 mA g(-1), a reversible capacity of 410 mA h g(-1) is obtained. The excellent and highly stable battery performance should be attributed to the synergism of the ultrasmall CoS2 particles and the thin N-rich porous carbon shells derieved from nanosized MOF precusors.

Abstract:The development of high rate lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with long cycle life is essential for the applications of LIBs in some important fields including fast charging electronics and electric vehicles. Significant efforts have been devoted to the development of novel nanostructured electrode materials to meet the requirements for high energy density and high power density. Particularly, one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) metal oxide nanostructures have aroused considerable interest as anode materials because of the shortened paths for fast lithium ion diffusion and large exposed surface offering more lithium-insertion channels. In recent years, it has been shown that oxide nanostructure arrays directly grown on conductive metal substrates may provide binder-free LIB anodes with remarkable advantages including enhanced rate capability and excellent compatibility with flexible electronics. Herein, we report on the solution-phase growth of 1D SnO2 nanorod arrays 5 and 2D Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) nanosheet arrays 6 directly on conductive Ti foil, and their applications as binder-free anodes for LIBs with excellent rate capability.

Abstract:Nano-sized two-dimensional carbonaceous materials have been widely used as the matrix for alloying-type and conversion-type anode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) to improve structural stability and rate performance. However, relevant synthesis usually requires rigorous conditions and chronic reaction processes. Herein, we have designed a simple solvothermal reaction and heat treatment to prepare a novel CoO/Co/C two-dimensional nanosheet (CoO/Co/C 2DNS) by adopting cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as the precursor. The unique characteristics of CNFs facilitate the uniform distribution of active materials on the surface and the construction of two-dimensional nanostructure via self-assembly. It is worth noting that CoO/Co/C 2DNS exhibits a striking synergistic effect since the porous 2D carbon framework offers additional pseudo-capacitance and enhances the electronic conductivity, while the ultrafine active materials encapsulated inside shorten the Li-ions diffusion pathways and relieve the volume change. Benefit from the unique structure, the composite anode delivered outstanding rate performance (∼500 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1) and superior long-range cycling performance up to 800 cycles even at 2 A g−1. This work provides a new strategy for the synthesis of nano-sized 2D composite, offering a promising route to construct high performance conversion-type anodes for next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are regarded as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities compared with commercial graphite. Unfortunately, the implementation of such novel anodes is hampered by their large volume changes during the Li+ insertion and extraction process and their low electric conductivities. Herein, we report a specifically designed anode architecture to overcome such problems, that is, mesoporous peapod-like Co3O4@ carbon nanotube arrays, which are constructed through a controllable nanocasting process. Co3O4 nanoparticles are confined exclusively in the intratubular pores of the nanotube arrays. The pores between the nanotubes are open, and thus render the Co3O4 nanoparticles accessible for effective electrolyte diffusion. Moreover, the carbon nanotubes act as a conductive network. As a result, the peapod-like Co3O4@carbon nanotube electrode shows a high specific capacity, excellent rate capacity, and very good cycling performance.

Abstract:Binary metal oxides have been explored as advanced candidates in lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes due to their high specific capacity. Herein, the hierarchical structures of porous NiCo2O4 nanosheets directly grown on a conductive carbon cloth substrate (3D NCO-PSA/CC) were obtained by a facile in situ synthetic strategy. When applied as a binder-free LIB anode, it exhibited satisfactory performance with a high discharge capacity (a first discharge capacity of 2090.8 mA h g-1 and a stable capacity of 1687.6 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1)), superior rate capacity (discharge capacity of 375.5 mA h g(-1) at 6000 mA g-1) and excellent reversibility (coulombic efficiency of approximately 100%). The outstanding performances should be attributed to the 3D porous structures, nanosheets and good conductivity of NCO-PSA/CC that could not only ensure the rapid transport of Li+ ions and electrons but also remit the huge volume change during lithiation/delithiation processes.
