Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:We report a novel material of Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array synthesized via the lithiation of pre-synthesized CoO@Si core-shell nanowire arrays during the first cycle. When the potential window versus lithium was controlled between 0.01-1.2 V, the coated Si shell could be electrochemically active, while the Co-Li2O nanowire core could function as a stable mechanical support and an efficient electron conducting pathway during the charge-discharge process. The Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array anodes exhibit good cyclic stability and high power capability compared to planar Si film electrodes.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequent radio-frequency (RF)-sputtering approach for the synthesis of CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell nanowire (NW) arrays on Ni foams. The metallic core (i.e., NiSi(x)) with high conductivity acts as a nanostructured current collector. The as-synthesized CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell NW arrays have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which deliver high cycle life and enhanced power performance compared to planar CoO electrodes on Ni foams. The high surface-to-volume ratio and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance.

Abstract:Three-dimensional Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays are prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanowire arrays and subsequent deposition of SnO2 and Ag by radiofrequency sputtering. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays show good cycling and rate performance, compared to corresponding Co3O4 arrays, Co3O4@SnO2 arrays, and Co3O4@SnO2@Ag planar electrodes. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the three-dimensional core-shell nanostructures and the addition of Ag, which can improves the electrical conductivity and structure stability during the charge/discharge process.

Abstract:Lithium metal anode (LMA) is puzzled by the serious issues corresponding to infinite volume change and notorious lithium dendrite during long-term stripping/plating process. Herein, the transition metal nitrides array with outstanding lithiophilicity, including CoN, VN, and Ni3N, are decorated onto carbon framework as "nests" to uniform Li nucleation and guide Li metal deposition. These transition metal nitrides with excellent conductivity can guarantee the fast electron transport, therefore maintain a stable interface for Li reduction. In addition, the designed multi-dimensional structure of metal nitride array decorated carbon framework can effectively regulate the growth of Li metal during the stripping/plating process. Of note, attributing to the lattice-matching between CoN and Li metal, the composite Li/CoN@CF anode exhibits ultra-stable cycling performance in symmetrical cells (over 4000 h@1 mA cm(-2) with 1 mAh cm(-2) and 1000h@20 mA cm(-2) with 20 mAh cm(-2)). The assembled full cells based on Li/CoN@CF composite anode, LiFePO4 or S as cathodes, deliver excellent cycling stability and rate capability. This strategy provides an effective approach to develop a stable lithium metal anode for lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Both cobalt oxide and tin are electrochemically active materials, and can be integrated into hybrid core-shell nanowire structures that can participate in lithium-ion insertion-deinsertion process. We demonstrate the synthesis of cobalt oxide-tin (Co3O4-Sn) core-shell nanowire arrays by the hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanowire arrays and subsequent deposition of the tin layer via a RF-sputtering method. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Co3O4-Sn core-shell nanowire electrodes show better cyclability and enhanced rate capacities compared to bare Co3O4 electrodes. The improved performance can be attributed to the introduction of the tin layer, which improves the electrical conductivity and structural stability of the Co3O4 nanowire arrays.

Abstract:To realize large lithium storage capacity and excellent rate capability lithium ion batteries, highly electrochemically active materials and rational design of structure are desirable. Here, we successfully synthesized CoO@N-doped carbon nanowire arrays derived from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) on Ni foam (denoted as CoO@N-C/NF). Each CoO@N-C nanowire was built up of numerous ordered in-situ nitrogen-doped carbon coated CoO nanoparticles (around 20 nm) after annealing treatment. Benefited from the unique structural features, when served as anode for lithium ion batteries, the CoO@N-C/NF exhibit superior initial Coulombic efficiency of 78.04%, and excellent electrochemical cyclability (1884.1 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 100 cycles) and good rate capability (1169.2 mAh g−1 at the rate of 5000 mA g−1). To our knowledge, this is the highest capacity with similar electric current density that has been reported for CoO-based materials. Our results indicate that the CoO@N-C/NF electrode without any auxiliary materials are expected to open up new opportunities for CoO-based material to power electronic devices.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides are attracting considerable attention as anodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their high reversible capacities. However, the drastic volume change and inferior electrical conductivity greatly retard their widespread applications in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, three-dimensional nanoporous composites of CoOx (CoO and Co3O4) quantum dots and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon are fabricated by a precipitation method. The carbon prepared by carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 can greatly enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite anodes. CoOx quantum dots anchored firmly on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon can effectively inhibit the aggregation and volume change of CoOx quantum dots during lithiation/delithiation processes. The nanoporous structure can shorten the ion diffusion paths and maintain the structural integrity upon cycling. Meanwhile, kinetics analysis reveals that a capacitance mechanism dominates the lithium storage capacity, which can greatly enhance the electrochemical performance. The composite anodes show a high discharge capacity of 1873 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g–1, ultralong cycle life (1246 mAh g–1 after 900 cycles at 1000 mA g–1), and improved rate performance. This work may provide guidelines for preparing cobalt oxide-based anodes for LIBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Recently, transition metal oxides have attracted great attention as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their poor electrical conductivity, unstable cycling performance and unclear additional capacity are still great challenges. Herein, CoxMnyNizO (x:y:z = 8 : 0.92 : 0.71) nanosheets corresponding to the cubic CoO phase directly formed on a Cu foil (CMN-CH) were fabricated and directly tested as binder-free anode electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. The unique preparation of the electrode without a binder effectively accelerated the transfer of Li(+)ions and electrons. Additionally, much more active sites were exposed to the electrolyte in the absence of additives (binder and conductive carbon). Metal vacancies and oxygen vacancies could be clearly observed in the crystal lattices, which were induced by doping Mn and Ni atoms in the CoO crystal lattices. The prepared CMN-CH electrode demonstrated superior capacities of 1501 mA h g(-1) at 5 A g(-1) after 1500 cycles and 823 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) after 1500 cycles, which are far beyond the theoretical capacity of CoO (716 mA h g(-1)) and surpass that of most CoO-based composites with carbon materials reported in the literature. The reversible conversion between Co(2+)and Co3+ during the cycling process contributed greatly to the reversible capacity. Based on the obtained excellent electrochemical capacities, the prepared CMN-CH has great potential to be used as an anode electrode for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical CoO nanosheets are grown on copper foils, by combining electro-deposition and selfsustained hydrothermal treatments and directly used as binder free anode electrodes of LIBs. CoO nanosheets are similar to 50 nm in thickness with several micrometers in width. The CoO nanosheets deposited on the copper foils were found to be single phase. The electrode delivers a capacity of similar to 637 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at 0.1C and exhibits excellent rate capability, owing to the special hierarchical structure, preferable accommodation of strain, good conductivity and fast lithium ion diffusion. The capacity can be improved to similar to 704 mA h g(-1) after carbon coating. The improved performance is investigated in detail. The results suggest that ameliorative conductivity, pseudocapacitance and the higher-oxidation-state component are responsible for the high capacity. More significantly, the strategy of CoO nanosheets fabrication not only can be extended to other substrates, such as carbon foams, carbon paper and carbon cloth, but can be applied to other materials, such as Fe3O4, NiO, etc. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:We report on the synthesis of a Co3O4-C core-shell nanowire array and its application as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The core-shell nanowire array is prepared by combining a facial hydrothermal synthesis and direct current magnetron sputtering. The amorphous carbon layer with a thickness of 18 nm is homogeneously coated on the surface of the porous Co3O4 nanowire. The Co3O4-C core-shell nanowire array delivers an initial discharge capacity of 1330.8 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 C and maintains a high reversible capacity of 989.0 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles, much higher than the unmodified Co3O4 nanowire array (490.5 mA h g(-1)). The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the introduction of a thin carbon layer, which improves the electrical conductivity and structure stability of the Co3O4 nanowire array.
High Lithium Storage Performance of Coo with A Distinctive Dual-Carbon-Confined Nanoarchitecture

Abstract:Herein, a distinctive dual-carbon-confined nanoarchitecture, composed of an inner highly conductive, robust carbon nanotube (CNT) support and outer well-designed porous carbon (PC) coating, was demonstrated to efficiently improve the electrochemical properties of CoO nanoparticles for the first time, and the CoO nanoparticles were confined between the CNTs and porous carbon. The welldesigned porous carbon coating showed significant superiority compared to common non-porous carbon coatings, due to its distinctive characteristics such as high flexibility, rich free space and open tunnel-like structure. Therefore, the synergistic effects of the CNT core and the porous carbon sheath endowed the CoO-based composite (CNTs@CoO@PC) with improved electrochemical reaction kinetics, large pseudocapacitive contribution and superior structural stability. As a result, the CNTs@CoO@PC showed outstanding performance with 1090, 571 and 242 mA h g(-1) at 200, 1000 and 5000 mA g(-1) after 300, 600 and 1000 cycles, respectively. Furthermore, this strategy may be used to improve other metal oxide anode materials for lithium storage.

Abstract:Octahedral Co3O4 particles threaded by ultra-long multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) arrays were prepared by a hydrothermal process and subsequent calcination. The Co3O4 octahedron with the (111) facets attaches to MWCNTs uniformly and closely. The composite can be used as an integrated anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) without any other additives (such as conductive additives and polymer binder), which exhibits a high reversible capacity of 725 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1), and excellent cyclic stability without capacity degradation over 100 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g(-1). The high performance can be attributed to the unique structure: (i) the ultra-long MWCNT array facilitates fast electron transfer; (ii) the tight adhesion between Co3O4 and MWCNTs prevents particle drifting and agglomeration; (iii) the free space between MWCNTs promotes fast ion transport and alleviates the large volume variation during discharge-charge process. This work demonstrates the great potential of MWCNT arrays as substrate and provides insights for the design and direct use of MWCNT array-based materials in LIBs, which will be helpful for future development of high-performance electrode materials.
Direct Synthesis of CoO Porous Nanowire Arrays on Ti Substrate and Their Application As Lithium-Ion Battery Electrodes

Abstract:We report for the first time a facile and direct synthesis of large-scale cobalt monoxide (CoO) porous nanowire arrays (NWAs) with robust mechanical adhesion to flexible conductive Substrate (Ti foil) by a two-step method. Significantly raw salt Cubic CoO of high quality from the complete pyrolysis of cobalt-hydroxide-carbonate (precursor) is achieved. When serving as lithium-ion battery electrodes in the absence of any ancillary materials (carbon black and binder), the as-obtained well-aligned CoO NWAs, possessing both the completely reversible electrochemical properties and unique advantages originating from integrated one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured architecture, exhibit good high-rate capability at a rate of 1 C (716 mA/g), 2 C (1432 mA/g), 4 C (2864 mA/g), and 6 C (4296 mA/g), respectively.

Abstract:SnO2-Co3O4 core-shell nanoneedle arrays are vertically aligned on copper foil by a facile template-free method. Without using any binder, conductive carbon or other ancillary materials, SnO2-Co3O4 core-shell nanoneedle arrays on copper foil are directly used as the anodes of lithium battery. At 0.5C rate (2 h per charging cycle), their reversible capacity maintains at similar to 985 mA h g (1) after 20 cycles, higher than that of bare Co3O4 nanoneedle arrays (similar to 813 mA h g (1)) and pure SnO2 nanostructures (similar to 582 mA h g (1)). Such a high lithium storage capacity can be attributed to the synergistic effect between nanostructured SnO2 and Co3O4. Co3O4 nanostructures with high electrochemical activity can activate the irreversible capacity of SnO2, and the nanoarray structures can provide good contact, short electron transporting paths, high surface-to-volume ratio and open space in the system. These results indicate that one-dimensional nanocomposite arrays on copper foils are good candidates for the anode of lithium ion battery. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel type of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoO nanohybrids, i.e., nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped porous single-crystalline CoO nanocubes (CoO@N-C nanocubes), by using Co3O4 nanocubes as precursors. Owing to its unique structural features, the as-synthesized CoO@N-C nanocubes demonstrate markedly enhanced anodic performance in terms of reversible capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability, facilitating its application as a high-capacity, long-life, and high-rate anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal as a promising anode material has been widely applied in many advanced high-energy density batteries. However, uncontrollable Li dendrite formation and infinite volume expansion in lithium anode result in short lifespan and severe safety hazards. In this contribution, we report that utilization of oxygen vacancy-enriched Co3O4 nanowire arrays as lithiophilic material is an effective strategy to obtain ultra-long stable lithium metal anode. The oxygen vacancy can serve as electronic charge carrier to facilitate electron transfer. Moreover, it can induce the generation of local electric field to accelerate lithium ions migration and enable uniform Li+ distribution, which are beneficial for homogeneous lithium nucleation. Combining the excellent ionic/electronic diffusion and the volume buffer offered by the nanowire arrays, the obtained electrode shows high coulombic efficiency of 98.5% at 1 mA cm−2 for 230 cycles.
