Abstract:Mixed transition metal oxides with high theoretical capacity show great potential to replace carbonaceous anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. However, they usually undergo large volume change during lithiation/delithiation, leading to poor rate and cycling performance. In this work, unique microsized assemblies constructed from porous CuCo2O4 nanosheets are synthesized by a facile method. Benefiting from the desired structural and compositional features, the as-synthesized CuCo2O4 nanosheet assemblies manifest excellent lithium storage performance in terms of high rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Specifically, the CuCo2O4 nanosheet assemblies can deliver a high specific capacity of 1104 mA h g(-1) at 2 A g(-1) after 600 cycles. Even at a high rate of 5 A g(-1), a high specific capacity of 656 mA h g(-1) can still be achieved.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of nanostructured hybrid CoO/Cu electrodes through electrodeposition and sputtering. When applied as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the CoO/Cu nanowire arrays deliver long cycle life and enhanced power performance than CoO/Cu films. The large accessible surface area and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Layered stacking and highly porous N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets are prepared from a stable Mo-enhanced hydrogel. The hydrogel is formed through the ultrafast cross-linking of phosphomolybdic acid and chitosan. During the reduction of the composite hydrogel framework under inert gas protection, highly porous N and P co-doped carbon nanosheets are produced with the in situ formation of ultrafine Mo2 C nanoparticles highly distributed throughout the nanosheets which are entangled via a hierarchical lamellar infrastructure. This unique architecture of the N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets tremendously promote the electrochemical activity and operate stability with high specific capacity and extremely stable cycling. In particular, this versatile synthetic strategy can also be extended to other polyoxometalate (such as phosphotungstic acid) to provide greater opportunities for the controlled fabrication of novel hierarchical nanostructures for next-generation high performance energy storage applications.
Carbonate-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of porous hierarchical Co3O4/CuO composites as high capacity anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Through thermal decomposition of hybrid carbonate (Cu, Co)2(OH)2CO3 precursors synthesized by a simple carbonate-assisted hydrothermal method, porous hierarchical Co3O4/CuO composites with different ratios of Co to Cu were successfully fabricated. A cooperative self-assembly effect of different carbonates has been proposed to explain the formation of nanosheets assembled hierarchical (Cu, Co)2(OH)2CO3 precursor. Electrochemical lithium storage properties of all the composites are evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It is found that the ratio of Co to Cu plays a vital role in affecting the morphology, structure and subsequent electrochemical performance of the Co3O4/CuO composites. Owing to the superior porous hierarchical structure and synergistic lithium storage effect of both active electrode materials, the Co3O4/CuO composites demonstrate higher capacities and enhanced cycling stability compared to pure Co3O4 or CuO electrodes. The Co3O4/CuO composite (Co: Cu=6: 1) electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 1056mAhg−1at a current density of 200mAg−1 for 500 cycles. With the superior electrochemical performance and easy preparation, the porous hierarchical Co3O4/CuO composites demonstrate promising application potential as anode materials for next generation high performance LIBs.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides are attracting considerable attention as anodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their high reversible capacities. However, the drastic volume change and inferior electrical conductivity greatly retard their widespread applications in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, three-dimensional nanoporous composites of CoOx (CoO and Co3O4) quantum dots and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon are fabricated by a precipitation method. The carbon prepared by carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 can greatly enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite anodes. CoOx quantum dots anchored firmly on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67-derived carbon can effectively inhibit the aggregation and volume change of CoOx quantum dots during lithiation/delithiation processes. The nanoporous structure can shorten the ion diffusion paths and maintain the structural integrity upon cycling. Meanwhile, kinetics analysis reveals that a capacitance mechanism dominates the lithium storage capacity, which can greatly enhance the electrochemical performance. The composite anodes show a high discharge capacity of 1873 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g–1, ultralong cycle life (1246 mAh g–1 after 900 cycles at 1000 mA g–1), and improved rate performance. This work may provide guidelines for preparing cobalt oxide-based anodes for LIBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel type of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoO nanohybrids, i.e., nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped porous single-crystalline CoO nanocubes (CoO@N-C nanocubes), by using Co3O4 nanocubes as precursors. Owing to its unique structural features, the as-synthesized CoO@N-C nanocubes demonstrate markedly enhanced anodic performance in terms of reversible capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability, facilitating its application as a high-capacity, long-life, and high-rate anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:As electrode materials, transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit poor electrochemical performances owing to their inherent low electronic conductivity and considerable volume expansion and contraction during charge/discharge cycles. Designing TMOs with unique nanostructure and combining them with conductive carbon substrates are effective strategies to address the inherent issues. In this work, we designed C/Cu porous microspheres and grew Co 3 O 4 nanosheets (NS) vertically on the carbon walls using an in situ synthesis route. As a conductive substrate, the C/Cu microspheres provide a hierarchical pore network and an electrode/electrolyte contact interface with large area, which can substantially enhance electron and ion diffusion kinetics. The in situ synthesized Co 3 O 4 NSs are firmly anchored on the carbon walls, thereby increasing the structural durability of the composites in long-term cycling. Due to their unique structural characteristics, when using the C/Cu@Co 3 O 4 composite microspheres as the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the batteries exhibit an enhanced rate performance (a high reversible specific capacity of 622 mA h g −1 at a current density of 5000 mA g −1 ), high charge-specific capacity (907 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 200 cycles, and a stable specific capacity of 944 mA h g −1 over 800 cycles, even at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 ), and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:Developing electrode materials with both high energy and power densities holds the key for satisfying the urgent demand of energy storage worldwide. Herein, we demonstrate the successful preparation of Co3V2O8 nanostructures that are constructed from self-assembly of ultrathin nanosheets via a simple hydrothermal method followed by annealing in air at 350 °C for 2 h. A "slipping-exfoliating-self reassembly" model based on the time-dependent experiments was proposed to elucidate the formation of the hierarchical nanosheets. When tested as lithium ion anodes, the as-synthesized multilayered nanoarchitectures exhibit outstanding reversible capacity (1114 mA h g(-1) retained after 100 cycles) and excellent rate performance (361 mA h g(-1) at a high current density of 10 A g(-1)) for lithium storage. Detailed investigations of the morphological and structural changes of Co3V2O8 upon cycling reveal an interesting kinetics toward lithium ion intercalations, where reversible conversion reactions between Co and CoO are found proceeding on the amorphous lithiated vanadium oxides matrixes. We believe that this observation is a valuable discovery for metal vandates-based lithium ion anodes. The superior electrochemical performances of the multilayered Co3V2O8 nanosheets can be attributed to the unique morphologies and particularly the surface-to-surface constructions that are generated during the lithium ion insertion processes.

Abstract:Aiming to achieve metal-oxide-based electrodes for Li-ion batteries with enhanced energy density and cycling life, especially overcoming their negative volume expansion during cycling, more effort should be devoted to the exploration of the combination of morphology-controlled metal oxides with carbonaceous materials. In this work, we select dual/single-metallic organic frameworks immobilized on the surface of carbon nanotubes as the precursors to synthesize composites of ternary/single metal oxides with carbon nanotubes (ZnCo2O4@CNTs and ZnO@CNTs). The main product, ZnCo2O4@CNTs, consists of ultrafine ZnCo2O4 nanoparticles embedded deeply in the carbon nanotubes. The existence of small-size ternary metal oxides as well as the carbon nanotubes results in outstanding lithium-storage properties of the ZnCo2O4@CNT anode for lithium-ion batteries. It delivers an extremely high capacity (1507 mA h g(-1), 100 mA g(-1)) after 200 cycles, which is larger than the theoretical value.

Abstract:The development of cathode catalysts with a porous structure is essential to design Li-O-2 batteries with a high rate performance and good cycle stability. Herein, spinel-type porous cobalt-manganese oxide (Co-Mn-O) nanocubes derived from metal organic frameworks were employed as an electrocatalyst in a Li-O-2 battery. The battery with the porous Co-Mn-O nanocubes electrode showed a low overpotential and enhanced capacity. The synergistic effects of large specific surface area, porous structure, and the high electrocatalytic activity of the porous Co-Mn-O nanocubes electrode endowed the Li-O-2 battery with a good rate performance and excellent cycle stability up to 100 cycles.

Abstract:Multicomponent binary metal oxide-involved hybrid structures with unique physicochemical properties have received extensive attention due to their fascinating electrochemical performance. Herein, a flexible strategy, which involves the preparation of dual-functional heterometallic Fe2M clusters and their subsequent sintering treatment, is developed to engineer novel 3D hierarchical porous structures assembled with MFe2O4 (M=Co, Mn, Ni and Zn) nanoparticles confined within carbon outer shell (denoted as MFe2O4@C HPSs). In this intriguing construction, it can be observed that MFe2O4@C HPSs comprised of carbon coated secondary MFe2O4 nanoparticles with an interconnected carbon network. The as-prepared MFe2O4@C HPSs possess combined advantages of high capacity of MFe2O4 and high conductivity of carbon. As expected, the MFe2O4@C HPSs offer a high reversible capacity, high cycling stability and superior rate performance. The interconnected conductive carbon shells facilitates fast ion and electron transport and accommodates the mechanical strain. In addition, nanosized MFe2O4 particles, which shorten the ion-transport path and provide extra electroactive sites, also improve the reaction kinetics. Moreover, these MFe2O4@C HPSs exhibit good structural integrity during repeated charging and discharging. The research perspective and strategy reported here are highly versatile and shed new light on the synthesis of other advanced electrode for various applications.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are regarded as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities compared with commercial graphite. Unfortunately, the implementation of such novel anodes is hampered by their large volume changes during the Li+ insertion and extraction process and their low electric conductivities. Herein, we report a specifically designed anode architecture to overcome such problems, that is, mesoporous peapod-like Co3O4@ carbon nanotube arrays, which are constructed through a controllable nanocasting process. Co3O4 nanoparticles are confined exclusively in the intratubular pores of the nanotube arrays. The pores between the nanotubes are open, and thus render the Co3O4 nanoparticles accessible for effective electrolyte diffusion. Moreover, the carbon nanotubes act as a conductive network. As a result, the peapod-like Co3O4@carbon nanotube electrode shows a high specific capacity, excellent rate capacity, and very good cycling performance.

Abstract:Carbon layers-coated porous Co3O4/NiO (denoted as PCNO@C) chains are synthesized by the facile solvothermal method and subsequently annealing treatment under an Ar atmosphere, which are assembled from numerous Co3O4/NiO nanosheets. Benefiting from the unique porous chain structure, the volume change of the electrode is greatly relieved during the long-term cycling processes, and then an excellent cycling stability is obtained (the reversible specific capacity of the 1000th cycle can reach 637.3 mA h g-1 at 5000 mA g-1). Besides, a continuous conductive network is constructed by the coated carbon layers and long chains, the movement rate of electrons is effectively accelerated, and the high rate capability is obtained (the high reversible specific capacity of 480.6 mA h g-1 is retained at 10,000 mA g-1). This work contributes a new idea to construct porous chain structure anode materials.

Abstract:Co3O4, as a promising anode material for the next generation lithium ion batteries to replace graphite, displays high theoretical capacity (890mAhg−1) and excellent electrochemical properties. However, the drawbacks of its poor cycle performance caused by large volume changes during charge-discharge process and low initial coulombic efficiency due to large irreversible reaction impede its practical application. Herein, we have developed a porous hollow Co3O4 microfiber with 500nm diameter and 60nm wall thickness synthesized via a facile chemical precipitation method with subsequent thermal decomposition. As an advanced anode for lithium ion batteries, the porous hollow Co3O4 microfibers deliver an obviously enhanced electrochemical property in terms of lithium storage capacity (1177.4mAhg−1 at 100mAg−1), initial coulombic efficiency (82.9%) and cycle performance (76.6% capacity retention at 200th cycle). This enhancement could be attributed to the well-designed microstructure of porous hollow Co3O4 microfibers, which could increase the contact surface area between electrolyte and active materials and accommodate the volume variations via additional void space during cycling.

Abstract:A facile and green freeze-drying-assisted method was proposed to synthesize CoMoO4 mesoporous nanosheets( MPNSs). The resulting product exhibits a high specific capacity and good rate performance when evaluated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs). The reversible specific capacity can be kept at 1105.2 mA·h·g–1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A/g. Even at the current densities of 1 and 4 A/g, the CoMoO4 MPNSs electrode can still retain the reversible capacities of 1148.7 and 540 mA·h·g–1, respectively. Furthermore, the full cell(LiFePO4 cathode/CoMoO4 MPNSs anode) displays a stable discharge capacity of 146.7 mA·h·g–1 at 0.1 C (1 C=170 mA/g) together with an initial coulombic efficiency of 98.2%. In addition, the CoMoO4 crystal structure is destroyed and reduced into Co0 and Mo0 in the first discharge process. In the subsequent cycles, the attractive Li storage properties come from the reversible conversions between Co/Co2+ and Mo/Mo6+. The improved electrochemical performance of CoMoO4 MPNSs is mainly attributed to their unique porous structures, which not only possess a good ion diffusion and electronic conduction pathway, but also provide many cavities to alleviate the volume changes during repeated cycling. This work offers a new perspective to the design of other porous electrode materials with a good energy storage performance.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have received significant consideration. Because of their enormous theoretical capacity, cheap, and less toxicity. Notably, cobalt-based materials hold promises as negative electrode materials for batteries, but they suffer from less electrical conductivity and significant volume changes during operation. In order to address these challenges, sacrificial templating techniques at the nanoscale offer a potential solution for improving the electrochemical stability and rate performance of these materials. More specifically, these tactics have proven popular for designing Li-ion storages. To ascertain the impact of multiple metal ions on the electrochemical capacity, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) derived MCo2O4-MOF (M = Zn, Ni, Cu) were developed. Among these, ZnCo2O4 showed the best electrochemical performance (927.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 250 cycles). Furthermore, calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) revealed that ZnCo2O4 had the lowest Li+ adsorption energy, with a minimum value of -1.61 eV. Moreover, this research aims to design controllable nanostructures in order to enhance the design of transition bimetallic oxide composites for energy storage applications.

Abstract:AbstractWe report a facile synthesis of a novel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) hierarchical nanostructure, in which crystalline core-amorphous shell Co3O4 nanoparticles with a bimodal size distribution are uniformly dispersed on ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared Co3O4 hierarchical electrodes delivered high lithium storage properties comparing to the other Co3O4 nanostructures, including a high reversible capacity of 1053.1 mAhg−1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C (1 C = 890 mAg−1), good cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Confining Transition metal oxides (TMOs) nanoparticles in porous carbon is an effective strategy to improve its electrochemical performance. Herein, the large grain size Co-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) was used as precursor to synthesize core-shell structure of Co 3 O 4 encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (denoted as L-Co 3 O 4 @NC). The in-situ synthesized L-Co 3 O 4 @NC exhibits a unique interconnected and hierarchical porous structure. Owing to the unique structu Line14ral merits including fast charge transmission and Li + diffusion, effectively accommodate the volume change, and promote the access of Li + , the L-Co 3 O 4 @NC exhibits excellent lithium storage performance in terms of high specific capacity (1389 mAh g −1 at 0.1A g −1 after 50 cycles), enhanced rate capability (1373, 1182 and 945 mAh g −1 at 0.5, 1 and 2 A g −1 , respectively), and cycling stability at large current density (1183 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 960 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 after 200 cycles), which outperforms most of recently reported Co 3 O 4 based electrodes. This work provides a new avenue for developing Co-based anode materials with high performance in energy storage field.
