Abstract:The nanocrystalline ferrites Zn0.4Ni0.6Cr0.5LaxFe1.5-xO4 (x=0 similar to 0.10) were prepared with citrate precursor by sol-gel process. The thermolysis process of translating citrate precursor into crystalline was analyzed by means of DSC-TG. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The results show that the temperature and the content of doped La have an obvious effect on the crystallite sizes, lattice parameter and morphology of samples. The magnetic properties of the samples can be also tailored by varying the content of La.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesize pristine and (Mg, Fe) co-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles using the chemical co-precipitation method, where the Mg doping amount is fixed (2 mol%) and the amount of Fe is varied between 2 and 6 mol%. The narrow and sharp natures of intense XRD peaks notify that the crystallinity is pretty well. The formation of the single-phase tetragonal rutile type structure of all prepared compounds has been identified by Rietveld refinement, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, the well incorporation of Fe and Mg in SnO 2 and absence of any other unexpected elements are confirmed by the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. How the co-doping of Mg and Fe alter the crystallite size, microstrain, and dislocation density of the prepared samples have been investigated by Scherrer method with various modified version of it, Williamson-Hall method (W–H) in three factions (UDM, USDM, and UDEDM), Size strain plot (SSP) method, Halder-Wagner (H–W) method, Wagner-Aqua (W-A) method, and Warren-Averbach (WA) method. The obtained crystallite size using the WA method is smaller than the other methods and Scherrer-based methods show much comparable (except SLMSE) sizes. Additionally, the W–H, H–W, SSP, and W-A plots show almost similar tendency of decreasing crystal size, increasing dislocation density and lattice strain with increasing doping. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) profiles revealed that the synthesized nanoparticles are agglomerated in nature, where the agglomeration increases with decreasing crystal size. The magnetic response of the prepared samples revealed a weak ferromagnetic (or soft magnetic) nature, where saturation magnetization increased due to doping, and a reducing trend of remanent magnetization and coercivity was explored which indicates the phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. However, this soft magnetic nature was modified with the influence of defects like changes in lattice parameters, strain, and oxygen vacancy. This phase transition at higher doping concentration makes our nanomaterial as a suitable contender for memory devices, hyperthermia treatment, and photothermal effect.

Nanospheres of a New Intermetallic FeSn5 Phase: Synthesis, Magnetic Properties and Anode Performance in Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:We synthesized monodisperse nanospheres of an intermetallic FeSn5 phase via a nanocrystal-conversion protocol using preformed Sn nanospheres as templates. This tetragonal phase in P4/mcc space group, along with the defect structure Fe0.74Sn5 of our nanospheres, has been resolved by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. Importantly, FeSn5, which is not yet established in the Fe-Sn phase diagram, exhibits a quasi-one dimensional crystal structure along the c-axis, thus leading to interesting anisotropic thermal expansion and magnetic properties. Magnetization measurements indicate that nanospheres are superparamagnetic above the blocking temperature T-B = 300 K, which is associated with the higher magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K = 3.33 kJ m(-3). The combination of the magnetization measurements and first-principles density functional theory calculations reveals the canted antiferromagnetic nature with significant spin fluctuation in lattice a-b plane. The low Fe concentration also leads Fe0.74Sn5 to enhanced capacity as an anode in Li ion batteries.
Synthesis, Microstructure, and Magnetic Properties of -Fe2o3/nio Core/shell Nanoflowers

Abstract:The main purpose of this work is to explore the influences of microstructures on the magnetic properties, as well as the formation mechanism of -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers. The synthesis of nanoflower-like samples includes three processes. Firstly, Fe3O4 nanospheres are synthesized by the solvothermal reaction of FeCl3 dissolved in ethylene glycol and NaAc. Secondly, Fe3O4/Ni(OH)2 core/shell precursor is fabricated by solvothermal method through using the early Fe3O4 spheres and Ni(NO3)26H2O in an ethanol solution. Finally, the precursor Fe3O4/Ni(OH)2 is calcined in air at 300 ℃ for 3-6 h, and therefore resulting in -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers. Their microstructures are characterized by using XRD, XPS, SEM, HRTEM and SAED techniques. The results show that the final powder samples are -Fe2O3/NiO with typical core/shell structure. In this core/shell system, the -Fe2O3 sphere acts as core and the NiO acts as shell, which are comprised of many irregular flake-like nanosheets with monocrystalline structure, and these nanosheets are packed together on the surfaces of -Fe2O3 spheres. The calcination time of Fe3O4/Ni(OH)2 precursor has significant influences on the grain growth, the NiO content and the compactness of NiO shells in the -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell system. VSM and SQUID are used to characterize the magnetic properties of -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers. The results indicate that the 3 h-calcined sample displays better ferromagnetic properties (such as higher ms and smaller HC) because of their high -Fe2O3 content. In addition, as the coupling interaction between the FM -Fe2O3 and AFM NiO components, we observe that the -Fe2O3/NiO samples formed in 3 h and 6 h display certain exchange bias (HE=20 and 46 Oe, respectively). Such a coupling effect allows a variety of reversal paths for the spins upon cycling the applied field, and thereby resulting in the enhancement of coercivity (HC(FC)=252 and 288 Oe, respectively). Further, the values of HE and HC for the former are smaller than those of the latter, this is because of the AFM NiO content in 6 h-calcined sample much higher than that in 3 h-calcined sample. Especially, the temperature dependences of the magnetization M of the two samples under both ZFC and FC conditions indicate that an extra anisotropy is induced. In a word, the size effect, NiO phase content, and FM-AFM (where FM denotes the ferromagnetic -Fe2O3 component, while AFM is the antiferromagnetic NiO component) interface coupling effect have significant influence on the magnetic properties of -Fe2O3/NiO core/shell nanoflowers.
Controllable Synthesis of Hollow Α-Fe2o3 Nanostructures, Their Growth Mechanism, and the Morphology-Reserved Conversion to Magnetic Fe3O4/C Nanocomposites

Abstract:In this work we present a controllable synthesis of hollow nanostructures of alpha-Fe2O3 by a facile hydrothermal route using FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O as the iron source and NH4H2PO4 as the shape-directing agent. We found that the morphology of alpha-Fe2O3 experienced a continuous change from thin nanospindles to flat nanodisks via finely tuning the phosphate ion concentration due to the selective absorption of phosphate ions onto the Fe2O3 nanostructures. At a given phosphate ion concentration, prolonging the reaction time led to the formation of hollow nanostructures (nanotubes, nanobeads, and nanorings) due to the dissolution and re-crystallization of Fe2O3. We also found that morphology-preserved conversion from alpha-Fe2O3 to magnetic Fe3O4/C can be achieved during the CVD reactions in C2H2. The Fe3O4/C nanocomposites with uniformly coated carbon layers exhibited morphology-dependent magnetic properties.
Synergistic Insights into the Structural, Optical, and Magnetic Features of Iron-Modified Tin Oxide (Fe-SnO2) Nanoparticles: An Integrated Experimental and First Principles Investigation

Abstract:The synthesis of SnO 2 nanoparticles doped with varying concentrations of Fe was carried out using the sol–gel method. The resulting samples underwent analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the impact of doping on the structural, optical, and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. The XRD study demonstrated a discernible alteration in the size of the crystalline structure as a function of the concentration of doping. The study revealed a noticeable variation in crystallite size, ranging from ~ 13 to 5 nm, as the Fe doping concentration increased from 0 to 7 mol%. This observation suggested that the rise in Fe content effectively hindered crystal development. The estimation of the optical band gap was performed using the Kubelka–Munk equation, revealing a decrease in the band gap for a specific doping concentration of Fe. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra obtained at room temperature indicated a red shift in the peak positions of the pristine SnO 2 samples upon Fe doping. This observation provides confirmation of the reduction in the band gap of SnO 2 resulting from the incorporation of Fe dopants. The nanoparticles doped with 5% Fe exhibited superior optical characteristics compared to the remaining samples. Furthermore, magnetic properties were determined by investigating magnetization vs. applied fields. Ferromagnetic interaction was observed in all the systems of SnO 2 doped with Fe. To achieve a comprehensive understanding, the utilization of density functional theory was employed. The electronic states and density of states behavior were computed to accurately anticipate the arrangement of lattice sites and the corresponding presence of atoms. Theoretical computations were conducted using the VASP program.

Anode performance in Li ion batteries and their superconducting properties is detailed. As anode materials, 45 nm nanospheres outperform both larger and smaller ones. Thus, they exhibit a capacity of about 3443 mAh cm(-3) and retain about 88% of after 10 cycles. We propose a model based on the microstructural evolution to explain the size impact on nanosphere performance. Magnetic measurements indicate that the nanospheres become superconducting below the transition temperature T-C = 3.7 K, which is similar to the value obtained in bulk tin. Although Tc does not significantly change with the size of the Sn core, we determined that the critical field H-C of nanospheres can be as much as a factor of 30 larger compared to the bulk value. Alternating current measurements demonstrated that a transition from conventional to filamentary superconducting structure occurs in Sn/SnOx particles as their size increases. The transition is determined by the relationship between the particle size and the magnetic field penetration depth.
Synthesis and Characterization of Monodisperse Fe3O4Nanospheres with Uniform Particle Size Distribution by a Simple Solvothermal Method

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4nanospheres with uniform particle size distribution were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method, without adding any surfactants and structure directing agents. The morphology, structure and phase composition of the nanospheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption stripping curves and pore size distribution curves. The measurements revealed that the Fe3O4nanospheres were assembled by 5-10 nm nanocrystallines; with porous structure, their specific surface area reached 41 m2/g. In addition, the formation mechanism of the nanospheres was elaborately analyzed by adjusting the solvothermal reaction temperature and time. It's confirmed that this preparation method has a strong universality. ZnO and CuO nano- and microspheres have been synthesized with the same or similar experimental parameters. These nano-and microspheres will have a more significant application prospect in the energy- and environment-related fields for the use of li-ion battery anode, supercapacitor, catalysis, etc.

Abstract:Mono-disperse Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 spinel ferrite particles have been synthesized directly via the hydrothermal method using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant. Particle size could be varied from 6 to 19nm by changing the experiment parameters. X-ray diffraction, high resolution TEM images confirmed the high crystallinity of ferrite nanocrystals. The effects of precursor suspension pH value, reaction temperature and surfactant (SDS) concentration on phase purity, particle size and dispersed property were discussed. The results indicated that mono-disperse Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticle had been obtained at pH value range (8–9), reaction temperature (90°C) and moderate SDS concentration (>0.2mM). The magnetic measurement shows that as prepared Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticle possesses good super-paramagnetic behavior. We also put forward a primary experimental model to shed light on the controllability of the monodispersity of the nanosized particles.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic zinc ferrite nanocrystals at ambient temperature were synthesized via the thermal decomposition of metal-surfactant complexes. Characterization measurements including transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were performed for as-synthesized ZnFe2O4 particles. The sample has a relatively narrow size distribution with an average particle size of 9.8 +/- 0.2 nm and standard deviation of 30%. The as-synthesized zinc ferrite nanocrystals are superparamagnetic at room temperature with a blocking temperature T-B = 68 +/- 2 K and a saturation magnetization M-S = 65.4 emu center dot g(-1) at T = 10 K, which are caused by the change in the inversion degree of the spinel structure. A coercive field of H-C = 102 +/- 5 Oe in the blocked state indicates small particle anisotropy, although evidence of surface spin canting was inferred from magnetization data in the as-synthesized ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals. Our results demonstrate that magnetic properties of magnetic particles can be largely modified by just changing particle size, which might be a useful way to design novel magnetic materials.

Abstract:Precisely controlling the microstructure and composition of each component in hybrid nanomaterials is critical for desired properties but very challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a new proof-of-concept method, or microtubing-based simple-programmed microfluidic processes (MT-SPMPs). MT-SPMPs preserve the ability for controlled hybridization by accurately adjusting the detailed microstructures and crystal phases of components using Sn-SnO2 nanoparticles as models, by coupling the synergistic effects of complex surfactants with the precise reaction kinetics control. Consequently, uniform Sn-SnO2 nanospheres with diameters from 2 nm to 14 nm or Sn@SnO2 nanorods with a diameter of 19 nm and length of 66 nm can be achieved. The SnO2 shell thickness can be well controlled at the Bohr exciton radius range. Particularly, the defect type and density in these nanospheres and nanorods can be tuned for unique ultraviolet emission at 347 nm or enhanced blue emission at 475 nm. Analysis on the detailed microstructure and crystal-phase dependent photoluminescences indicates that the quantum mechanical dipole-forbidden rule can be effectively conquered by the formation of Sn-SnO2 nanohybrids with controlled defects (oxygen vacancies or Sn interstitials).
Structurally related electromagnetic properties of NixFeyO4 nanomaterials synthesized by granulated sodium alginate

Abstract:In regard to the synthesis of NixFeyO4 nanoparticles, a new process was presented that used granulated sodium alginate (Na-ALG) prepared by a high-shear wet granulator (HSWG). By using this synthesis route, Na-ALG granules were added directly into metal salt solutions to obtain respective ferrite oxide nanoparticles based on a solid-liquid ion-exchange reaction. The different NixFeyO4 nanopowder samples were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Significant increases in the particle sizes were observed with increased calcination temperatures in this investigation. The structural analysis of NixFeyO4 obtained by XRD Rietveld refinement agreed with the simulated models using the Materials Studio (MS) software. The structural differences of NixFeyO4 due to the increasing Ni2+ concentrations from 0.4 to 1.43 mol were investigated with nominal compositions and confirmed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The magnetic investigations were carried out using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and a maximum saturation magnetization (Ms = 37.26 emu/g) was recorded at 20000 Oe with the Ni0.4Fe2.6O4 nanoparticles. All samples showed supermagnetic properties when the Ms values decreased as the Ni2+ concentrations increased. Finally, the synthesized NixFeyO4 samples exhibited excellent discharge-storage capacities even after 200 cycles. This new process not only ensured that the operation was easier to scale up but also much greener since it consumed less than 4% of the water compared with other processes in the literature.

Abstract:Monodisperse superparamagnetic SnO2-coated iron-oxide nanoparticles (similar to 16.4 nm) have been synthesized via thermal decomposition. The thickness of SnO2 shells can be controlled from 1-5 nm. As-prepared SnO2-coated iron-oxide nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization (18 A m(2)/kg), are stable up to 600 degrees C, which can be formed stable ferrofluid. It was suggested that the SnO2 shell acts as a barrier of preventing the growth of gamma-Fe2O3 and consequently, avoiding the gamma-Fe2O3-to-alpha-Fe2O3 phase transition at high temperatures.
Interfacial Growth Behavior of SnO2 Nanorods on {112̄0} and {101̄0} Facets of Α-Fe2o3

Abstract:SnO2 nanorods with specific growth directions, [101] or [001], were fabricated on α-Fe2O3 substrates via a simple hydrothermal method. The growth behavior of SnO2 nanorods is facet-selective. Both {110} and {100} facets of α-Fe2O3 are favorable to direct the growth of SnO2 nanorods. The correlation between the crystallographic orientation of SnO2 and the facets of α-Fe2O3 is characterized by TEM observations and investigated on the basis of the interfacial lattice compatibility. Furthermore, the distribution and coordination of oxygen atoms at the interface of α-Fe2O3–SnO2 heterostructure are analyzed, which reveals that only slight deviations from their original equilibrium positions are allowed for the formation of heterogeneous interface. And this lower energy activated interfacial construction is beneficial to the feasibility and stability of heterostructures.
Synthesis of ZnFe 2 O 4 Nanomagnets by Fe-ion Implantation into ZnO and Post-Annealing

Abstract:Fe ions of dose 8x10(16) cm(-2) are implanted into a ZnO single crystal at 180 keV. Annealing at 1073 K leads to the formation of zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4), which is verified by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The crystallographically oriented ZnFe2O4 is formed inside the ZnO with the orientation relationship of ZnFe2O4 (111)//ZnO (0001). Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements show that the as-implanted and post-annealing samples are both ferromagnetic at 5 K. The synthesized ZnFe2O4 is superparamagnetic, with a blocking temperature (T-B = 25 K), indicated by zero field cooling and field cooling (ZFC/FC) measurements.

Abstract:A series of nanostructured iron compounds including cubic Fe3O4 and orthorhombic FeOOH were synthesized via a facile low temperature (in the range of 60−100°C) solution method. In the whole process, the interaction between FeCl2·4H2O and methenamine (C6H12N4) was carried out through a reflux device under different reaction conditions such as temperature, solvent, and duration. The samples were detected by XRD, TEM, SAED, physical property measurement system, and Mössbauer spectroscopy, separately. The experiments showed that magnetic mixture nanoparticles had flake and rod morphologies, and cubic Fe3O4 took on grain nanostructure. Magnetism measurements indicated that the saturated magnetization of the as-obtained magnetic mixture was lower than that of the cubic magnetite. Mössbauer spectroscopy testified the sample consisting of cubic magnetite rather than γ-Fe2O3. In addition, a possible growth mechanism of cubic magnetic nanoparticles under different conditions was discussed.

Abstract:Fe-Co alloy and Sm3+-substituted magnetite nanowire composites (CoxFe1-x/CoyFe1-ySmzFe2-zO4) have been synthesized via a hydrothermal method without using surfactants or templates. The effects of substitution on structure and morphology were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM image shows that the average diameter of the magnetite nanowires is about 40 nm and the length is several micrometers. The z = 0.1 composite shows relatively high saturation magnetization (92.3 emu/g) detected by a vibrating sample magnetometer. The possible growth mechanism of the nanowires is discussed on the basis of the crystal structure of the materials. From the perspective of thermodynamics, we explain the postulated mechanism of the hydrothermal reaction. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This review briefly summarizes our recent progresses in the controlled synthesis of single crystalline iron oxides hollow nanostructures. Using both phosphate and sulfate ions as mineralizing agents, by controlling the reaction conditions, such as the reaction temperature, reaction time, etc., we have successfully synthesized a series of single crystalline of α-Fe 2 O 3 hollow nanostructures including nanotubes, nanorings and tube-in-tubes, with controlled sizes and surface structures by a facile hydrothermal method. In addition to the synthetic protocols, we propose a novel mechanism—coordination assisted preferential dissolution mechanism, which is responsible for the formation of non-layered nanotube/nanoring. With the as-prepared α-Fe 2 O 3 products as precursors, single crystalline Fe 3 O 4 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes/nanorings were also prepared through a gas-phase reduction process. Besides, the magnetic properties of a single Fe 3 O 4 nanoring were also investigated using electron tomography technique.
Crystal engineering and SERS properties of Ag-Fe3O4 nanohybrids: From heterodimer to core-shell nanostructures

Abstract:Structure tailoring of hybrid nanoparticles is highly desirable for a number of applications, due to their controllable physical properties. Here, a family of Ag-Fe3O4 nanohybrids is synthesized via a simple one-step reaction of silver acetate and iron acetylacetonate in the presence of 1,2-dodecanediol, oleylamine and oleic acid. The as-obtained Ag-Fe3O4 nanohybrid could be finely tuned from heterodimer nanoparticles to flower-like or core-shell nanoparticles, by controlling the experimental conditions. The structural differences between these nanohybrids greatly affect their optical properties. The intense surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak allows the heterodimer nanoparticles to act as a superior surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, which has been demonstrated by using 2-naphthalenethiol as a probe molecule. It is noted that the SERS signal of 2-naphthalenethiol on the heterodimer nanoparticles is much stronger than those on the core-shell nanohybrid and Ag nanoparticles alone, indicating its potential in the fields of ultrasensitive detection and biological imaging.
