Abstract:A new Schiff-base fluorescence probe CS containing benzimidazole and coumarin fluorophores was synthesized and characterized by NMR, IR and ESI-MS. Fluorescence and absorption spectra show the unique changes in the presence of Hg2+ and Cu2+. Hg2+ induces a remarkable fluorescence enhancement and results in mercury-promoted hydrolysis of a mercury-CS complex to convert the imine group to the aldehyde group. Cu2+ leads to a colorimetric change from colorless to pale yellow and causes formation of a copper-CS complex. Thus, CS can act as a fluorescent chemodosimeter for Hg2+ and a naked-eye chemosensor Cu2+. The cell imaging experiments for Hg2+ show a slow enhancement of a bright blue fluorescence with increasing incubation time, while Cu2+ instantly quenches the fluorescence and then the fluorescence intensity has no further change by extending the incubation time. Therefore, the probe CS shows its potential application for simultaneous differential detection of Hg2+ and Cu2+ in living cells based on the fluorescence response time. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this study, a naked-eye colorimetric sensor was fabricated based on a Schiff base (-SH) derivative immobilized onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microspheres. The surface morphology of PVA-SH was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PVA-SH microspheres could selectively detect Cu2+ by a visible color change. This novel chemosensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Cu2+, which can induce a color change of PVA-SH from white to yellow. PVA-SH exhibited a detection limit of 0.086 M for Cu2+. Moreover, this simple and cost-efficient chemosensor was used for detecting Cu2+ in actual environmental water samples.

Abstract:A stable and highly visible-light responsive semiconductor material of AgCuO/Cu2O was prepared to develop a colorimetric and photoelectrochemical (PEC) dual-sensing mode for broad-range Hg2+ detection. The AgCuO/Cu2O was evidenced with Hg2+-enhanced peroxidase activity. In the solution, the appearance of Hg2+ promotes AgCuO/Cu2O to catalyze more 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidization, deepening the color of the TMB solution and increasing the light absorption, thus realizing the colorimetric detection of Hg2+. The linear response range is 1 nmol·L-1 to 10 μmol·L-1, and the detection limit is 3.5 nmol·L-1. On the electrode surface, the emergence of Hg2+ facilitates AgCuO/Cu2O to convert more 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) into insoluble precipitates benzo-4-chlorohexadienone (4-CD), depressing the PEC signal and realizing the PEC detection of Hg2+ with a linear response range of 10 pmol·L-1 to 10 μmol·L-1 and a detection limit of 8.7 pmol·L-1. The enhancement of the enzyme-mimicking activity of AgCuO/Cu2O by Hg2+ is closely related to the in-situ formation of the Ag-Hg amalgam. The colorimetric and the PEC sensing modal complement each other, significantly broadening the detection range of Hg2+ and ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the results. The work paves the way for sensitive, selective, and accurate determination of Hg2+ in serum samples.

Abstract:A new rhodamine B derivative colorimetric and fluorescent sensor (1) was synthesized by condensation reaction of rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, which showed reversible and highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu2+ over other examined metal ions. Upon addition of Cu2+, sensor 1 exhibits remarkably enhanced absorbance intensity and color change from colorless to pink in DMSO and MeCN aqueous buffer solution or pure MeCN, and shows significant off–on fluorescence accompanied by color changes from colorless to orange in MeCN. The sensor 1 was also successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ in water samples.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent ratiometric chemosensor based on 4-pyren-1-yl-pyrimidine (PPM) has been designed and prepared for the detection of Hg2+ in the presence of other competing metal ions in acetonitrile. The photo exhibits fluorescence color change of PPM from blue to green without and with Hg2+, which red shift of wavelength about 105nm in fluorescence emission spectra. It can serve as a highly selective chemodosimeter for Hg2+ with ratiometric and naked-eye detection. The photophysical properties of PPM confirmed a 2:1 (PPM–Hg2+) binding model and the spectral response toward Hg2+ was proved to be reversible.

Abstract:A highly sensitive colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode sensor based on hybridization chain reaction (HCR) combining multifunctional Au NPs is presented for the detection of Hg2+ in aqueous solution. In Hg2+ absent solution, the surface of Au NPs was covered by hairpin auxiliary DNAs and a single strand DNA (ssDNA), which prevented Au NPs from salt-induced aggregation. At the same time, the fluorescence intensity of the dye-labeled hairpin probes was significantly quenched by Au NPs. In the presence of Hg2+, T-Hg2+-T coordination chemistry between helper DNA and the hairpin probes was induced which triggered the formation of extended double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) polymers via HCR. The formed dsDNA polymers were stiffer which couldn’t attach to Au NPs, resulting in a red-to-blue color change along with salt-induced aggregation of Au NPs for colorimetric sensing. Meanwhile, the fluorescence of dye-labeled DNA turns on. Due to the HCR amplification effect, a highly sensitive detection of Hg2+ was achieved with detection limit of 0.1nM. Colorimetry is suitable for the analysis in salt solution with concentration lower than 100mM. It serves as an intuitive method that Hg2+ down to 1.0nM could be identified by naked eyes. For high-concentration salt solutions such as industrial effluent, fluorescent sensing acts as a better choice. Both the color and fluorescence changes of the proposed sensor exhibited high selectivity against other metal ions. Lake water was collected and analyzed using the dual-mode sensor, the results confirmed the practicability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Fluorescence-based visual analysis has attracted considerable attention in on-site, detection owing to their distinct color gradient changes, easy operation and high sensitivity. In this work, we construct an exceptionally simple dual-emission ratio fluorescence sensor through the synergy of hydroxytyrosol (HYT), naphthoresorcin (NR) and ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), namely HYT – NR – QD, for the fluorescent and visual detection of Cu 2+ . The design of ratiometric nanosensor is based on our new finding that Cu 2+ can catalyze the reaction between HYT and NR to produce a cyan-emitting fluorophore (emission: 480 nm), and the copper species existed in the form of Cu + and Cu 2+ in reaction system. After adding QDs (emission: 605 nm), the free Cu + , Cu 2+ and the resulting fluorophore in this system caused a great reduction in the FL intensity of QDs, due to the rapid cation exchange reaction between QDs and Cu 2+ /Cu + as well as the inner filter effect between QDs and the resulting fluorophore. Overall, Cu 2+ induced emission intensity changes at 480 and 605 nm leads to a distinct color change from red to cyan. A ratiometric fluorescence Cu 2+ sensor with a lowest concentration of 3.42 nM was developed. Furthermore, the concentration of Cu 2+ can be conveniently reflected with a smartphone application by identifying the RGB value. Moreover, the method proposed by us can be explored for Cu 2+ determination in environmental water samples with a satisfying result, providing a novel, simple-operating and on-site detection of Cu 2+ in water samples.

Abstract:We have developed a new class of benzothiazolium hemicyanine Cu(II) complex based colorimetric and fluorometric dual-modal chemosensor for the toxic cyanide anion in 100% water solution. This dual-modal response was achieved by the removal of Cu(II) ions from sensor complex in the presence of cyanide to recover the internal charge transfer (ICT) character of the hemicyanine dye. The novel sensor shows good sensitivity with μM-level detection limit, and displays high selectivity to cyanide in the presence of other common interference anions.

Abstract:To monitor Cu2+ efficiently, a kind of D-π-A-π-D conjugated 3,5-di-(2-hydroxyl naphthaldehyde)-iminyl triazole (HNIT) was developed, using triazole as electron acceptor, 2-hydroxyl naphthaline as electron donor, -C=N- as bridging group. The proposed HNIT possessed superior UV-vis and fluorescent spectral property with high molar absorption coefficient of 2.313×104 L·mol−1·cm−1 and fluorescence quantum yield of 36.2 %. Trace Cu2+ could exclusively alter its UV-vis and fluorescent property with clear color change. Under the optimized conditions, a high-performance fluorescent and ratio-metric colorimetric detection of Cu2+ based on HNIT was efficient, with low detection limits of 3.3×10−8 mol∙L−1 (S/N=3) and 9.6×10−8 mol∙L−1 (S/N=3) respectively. It well satisfied with the safe value of 31.5 μM Cu2+ in drinking water recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). When applied for detection of Cu2+ in real environmental samples, the recovery was among 97.5 %~105.2 %. The recognition mechanism for HNIT to Cu2+ was confirmed to be quite stable 6-membered rings between electron-deficient Cu2+ and electron-rich N and O atoms in HNIT with 1:2 chemical stoichiometry of HNIT to Cu2+.

Abstract:The study reports the synthesis of chemosensor (E)-2-(1-(3-aminophenyl)ethylideneamino)benzenethiol (C1), a highly sensitive, colorimetric metal probe that shows distinct selectivity for the detection of Cu2+ ion in various real water samples. Upon complexation with Cu2+ in CH3OH/H2O (60:40 v/v) (aqueous methanol), the C1 demonstrate significant enhancement in the absorption at 250 nm and 300 nm with a color change from light yellow to brown which was visualized using naked-eye. Therefore, these properties make C1 as an effective candidate for on-site Cu2+ ions detection. The emission spectrum of C1 illustrated "TURN-ON" recognition of Cu2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 46 nM. Furthermore, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to better understand the interactions between C1 and Cu2+. The obtained results suggested that the electron clouds present around the -NH2 in nitrogen and sulfur in -SH play a pivotal role in the formation of a stable complex. The computational results were in good agreement with the experimental UV-visible spectrometry results.
A Simple Colorimetric Sensor Based on Anti-Aggregation of Gold Nanoparticles for Hg2+ Detection

Abstract:A new method has been proposed to realize the visual detection of Hg2+ via anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The positively charged Au NPs were prepared using poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) as reducer and stabilizer. In the presence of cysteine, the color of Au NPs solution turned from ruby red to royal purple, indicating the aggregation of Au NPs. Owing to the high stability constant of cysteine with Hg2+, the pre-incubation of Hg2+ with cysteine would form Hg2+–cysteine complexes and significantly reduce the concentration of free cysteine molecules, thus the aggregation of Au NPs was interrupted since there was not enough inducer. With the increase of Hg2+ concentration, the color of the Au NPs solution would progress from purple to red, allowing the visual detection of Hg2+ ranging from 5.0×10−8 to 1.0×10−5M, with a detection limit of 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method is convenient, low-cost and free of complex equipment, making it possible to analyze Hg2+ in drinking water, rain water or water extracted air samples.

Abstract:A new multisignaling sensor based on rhodamine B with a ferrocene substituent (1) has been synthesized and has been shown to display extreme selectivity for Hg2+ over other metal ions. Multisignaling changes are observed through UV/vis absorption, fluorescence emission, and electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, by means of confocal laser scanning microscopy experiments, it is demonstrated that 1 can be used as a fluorescent probe for monitoring Hg2+ in living cells.

Abstract:A new dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric probe for selective determination of Cu2+ was developed based on blue-emission sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) and yellow-emission carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The fluorescence and absorbance of CQDs increased in the presence of Cu2+ due to the Cu2+ -oxidized o-phenylenediamine group on the surface of the CQDs. Because of the inner filter effect between SQDs and CQDs-Cu2+, the fluorescence response of SQDs decreased following the introduction of Cu2+. Furthermore, in the presence of Cu2+, the dual-mode SQD–CQD probe showed visible color changes under both ultraviolet light and sunlight. Under optimal conditions, the dual-mode probe was used to quantitatively detect Cu2+ with a linear range of 0.1–5.0 μM for ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetry, with a limit of detection of about 31 nM and 47 nM, respectively. Finally, the dual-mode probe was used for the determination of Cu2+ in practical samples to expand the practical application, and the difference between ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric methods was compared. The recovery results confirmed the high accuracy of the dual-mode probe, showing that it has immense potential for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ in practical samples.Graphical abstract

Abstract:A novel acylhydrazone derivative B3 was designed and synthesized as a multichannel chemosensor. B3 formed stable gels with several organic solvents and aqueous THF (THF:H2O = 4:1, v/v); good aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects were observed, and each gel exhibited fluorescence. As a chemosensor, B3 detected F− selectively and sensitively via both colorimetric and fluorometric responses with detection limits of 1.4 × 10−7 and 9.5 × 10−9 M, respectively. Furthermore, B3 indicated the presence of AcO− selectively through a coloring–decoloring process within approximately 30 min, Fe3+ efficiently quenched the fluorescence of the gel fromed by B3 in aqueous THF (GB3). For example, 1 equiv of Fe3+ caused a 11-fold reduction in the fluorescence intensity (FI, quenching 91%) of GB3. Conversely, Zn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Na+ effected negligible decreases in FI, while Cu2+, Al3+, Co2+, Cr3+, and Fe2+ reduced FI non-significantly. The detection limit of GB3 for Fe3+ was 1.6 × 10−6 M. Importantly, the maximum emission wavelength of GB3 and gels with the aforementioned cations were all approximately 470 nm, but the addition of Fe3+ resulted in a significant redshift (550 nm). As a result, GB3 was deemed an outstanding chemosensor for Fe3+. Finally, a test strip based on B3 and a film based on GB3 were prepared, which could be used for colorimetric detection of F− and fluorometric display of Fe3+ detection in real time.
