Abstract:Mercury pollution in aquatic environment is becoming increasingly serious, which poses a threat to the ecological environment and human health. Traditional methods are costly and time consuming since they require sophisticated instruments and professional operation. Thus simple and on-site detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg2+) is extremely expected. In this study, we constructed a one-step lateral flow strip that can selectively detect Hg2+ in solution based on the thymine-Hg2+-thymidine (T-Hg2+-T) mismatch principle. Detect probe (poly T20) were designed to bind to compete probe (poly A20) which can compete with Hg2+ to bind detect probe, leading to the color change on the test line. Moreover, a home-made bionic E-eye system was developed as a portable in-situ detection platform to efficiently measure the Hg2+ in 10 minutes by direct photographing. Under optimized experimental conditions, the developed lateral flow strip had a detection limit of 2 ppb and could detect up to 400ppb.
Carbon nanoparticle-based ratiometric fluorescent sensor for detecting mercury ions in aqueous media and living cells

Abstract:A novel nanohybrid ratiometric fluorescence sensor is developed for selective detection of mercuric ions (Hg(2+)), and the application has been successfully demonstrated in HEPES buffer solution, lake water, and living cells. The sensor comprises water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) and exhibits their corresponding dual emissions peaked at 437 and 575 nm, respectively, under a single excitation wavelength (350 nm). The photoluminescence of the CNPs in the nanohybrid system can be completely quenched by Hg(2+) through effective electron or energy transfer process due to synergetic strong electrostatic interaction and metal-ligand coordination between the surface functional group of CNPs and Hg(2+), while that of the RhB remains constant. This results in an obviously distinguishable fluorescence color variation (from violet to orange) of the nanohybrid solution. This novel sensor can effectively identify Hg(2+) from other metal ions with relatively low background interference even in a complex system such as lake water. The detection limit of this method is as low as 42 nM. Furthermore, the sensing technique is applicable to detect Hg(2+) in living cells.

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a bio-accumulative and toxic heavy metal, which has caused significant damage to our health. It is vital to establish a method for the determination of Hg2+. Here, a new strategy for colorimetric/SERS dual-mode determination of Hg2+ was proposed based on controllable etching Au@Ag NPs. The silver shells could be etched by S2O32- causing the orange colloidal solution to turn into brick red. However, after Hg2+ is added, the etching effect is suppressed due to the reaction between Hg2+ and S2O32- to form an insoluble substance HgS. As a result, the UV-vis absorption at 394 nm and Raman intensity of R6 G increase with a silver shellless etched by S2O32-. About the colorimetric method, the limit of detection was 2 mu M and 0.2 mu M through the naked eye and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. Moreover, the SERS method possesses a linear regression for the concentration of Hg2+ (0.1 nM(-1) mu M), and the LOD was 0.1 nM. Furthermore, the sensing strategy has been used to determine Hg2+ in traditional Chinese medicine and real water samples. The selectivity and practicability studies indicate that our method has excellent specificity and sensitivity. Thus, this strategy is suitable for on-site fast detecting of Hg2+.
Dispersion-aggregation-dispersion Colorimetric Detection for Mercury Ions Based on an Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles and Carbon Nanodots.

Abstract:Mercury is a common heavy metal element in natural systems and is highly toxic to the human body. Herein, a novel colorimetric detection of Hg2+ ions is proposed based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) induced by carbon quantum dots (CDs) with the assistance of glutathione (GSH). In this sensing system, the AuNP/CDs composite forms through Au-N bonds. Simultaneously, the color of the solution turns from wine red to blue. The well-dispersed AuNPs can be restored after the addition of GSH, because GSH competes with CDs to bind onto the surface of AuNPs and protect AuNPs from aggregation. In the presence of Hg2+ ions, GSH can chelate with Hg2+ to form a complex, which subsequently enables CDs to facilitate the aggregation of the AuNPs again. Therefore, according to the red-to-blue color change, a colorimetric sensor is established for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 7.5 nM. Moreover, this sensor is successfully used to detect Hg2+ spiked in environmental water. This very simple and cost-effective strategy will promote the development of a colorimetric sensor for the determination of other metal ions in biological and environmental fields.

Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective method is proposed for colorimetric detection of copper ions using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of Cu2+ induces the aggregation of 4-MBA modified AgNPs, this resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. The concentration of Cu2+ could be quantified by naked eyes or a UV–vis spectrometer. The absorbance ratio (A560nm/A393nm) is linear with the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 1×10−7M to 1×10−4M with a coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is as low as 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method could be successfully applied to determine Cu2+ in drinking water.
Portable Colorimetric Detection of Mercury(II) Based on a Non-Noble Metal Nanozyme with Tunable Activity

Abstract:The nanozyme-based strategy is currently one of the frontiers in the detection of toxic heavy metal ions. However, the utilization of noble metal free nanozymes to construct an economically and environmentally sustainable methodology remains largely unknown. Here, chitosan-functionalized molybdenum(IV) selenide nanosheets (CS-MoSe2 NS), greenly synthesized by an ionic liquid-assisted grinding method, were exploited for the colorimetric sensing of mercury ions (Hg2+). The sensing principle was based on the activating effect of Hg2+ on CS-MoSe2 NS nanozyme activities, triggered by the in situ reduction of chitosan-captured Hg2+ ions on a MoSe2 NS surface. Using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a colorimetric indicator, the concentrations of activator-like Hg2+ ions could be quantitatively and selectively monitored, reaching a limit of detection of 3.5 nM with the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. In addition, the integration system of CS-MoSe2 NS with a smartphone achieved a portable detection limit as low as 8.4 nM Hg2+ within 15 min and showed high specificity and anti-interfering ability over other ions and great practicability in real water and serum samples. The eco-friendly properties of such sensing system were also confirmed. This work emphasizes the rational portable assembly of biocompatible nanozymes like CS-MoSe2 NS for the field detection of Hg2+ in food, biological, and environmental samples.

Abstract:A nanocomposite of AuNPs decorated on Fe-doped MoS 2 (Fe-MoS 2 @AuNPs) was prepared for colorimetric-electrochemical (C-E) coupled detection of Hg 2+ . The presence of Hg 2+ can enhance the colorimetric reaction between TMB and H 2 O 2 catalyzed by the peroxidase-like activity of Fe-MoS 2 @AuNPs, and thus, selective colorimetric sensing of Hg is established with a linear range of 1–40 μM and a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Then, the left TMB after colorimetric reaction, which is inversely proportional to the concentration of Hg 2+ , is electrochemically monitored by the electrocatalysis of the same Fe-MoS 2 @AuNPs. Thus C-E coupled method can not only improves the sensitivity for Hg 2+ (linear range of 0.5–200 nM and detection limit of 0.2 nM) but also overcomes the interference from the colored sample. Such dual-functional nanocomposite can greatly simplify the C-E coupled detection procedure and extend its application area for detecting Hg 2+ and other toxic material.

Abstract:A novel ratiometric fluorescence probe based on nitrogen-doped blue carbon dots (NCDs) and red gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) for mercuric ion (Hg2+) has been prepared and characterized. A user friendly fluorescent test paper based sensor combined with smartphone was fabricated for rapid visual and quantitative detection. Hg 2+ can specifically bind to Au + on the surface of Au NCs, leading to the quench of red fluorescence while the fluorescence intensity of the NCDs with blue fluorescence remained unchanged as a internal standard signal. The implement of paper-based sensor address some common drawback in analytical process such as the detection time, analysis cost. In a further demonstration, a homemade detection device with smartphone was used to qualify the Hg 2+ . After adding different concentration of Hg 2+ , red, purple, and blue colors were obtained on the detection zones of the fluorescent test paper. The Android App Color Grab was used to identify the red, green and blue (RGB) values of fluorescent color. The rapid visual and quantitative detection of Hg 2+ was accomplished with the detection limit of 2.7 nM for fluorescence, 25 nM for smartphone and 32 nM for paper strip. The developed multi-mode detection platform was successfully applied to the detection of mercury ions in water samples with acceptable recoveries. The NCDs and Au NCs probe facilitate the one-site environmental monitoring for Hg 2+ with “naked-eye” and smartphone.

Abstract:Colorimetric biosensor-based nanozymes have received considerable attention in various fields thanks to the advantages of the simple preparation, good stability, and regulable catalytic activity of nanozymes. In this study, a bimetallic nanozyme Fe3O4@Co3O4/CN was prepared via the high-temperature calcination of Fe3O4-PVP@ZIF-67. The material retained its skeletal structure before calcination, which prevented the aggregation of nanoparticles and exposed more active sites of the nanozyme, substantially enhancing the intrinsic dual enzyme-mimetic activities, including peroxidase- and oxidase-like activities. In particular, Fe3O4@Co3O4/CN with oxidase-like activity catalyzed the colorless tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to become blue oxTMB with oxygen. Reducing glutathione (GSH) could inhibit the above oxidation reaction. In contrast, with respect to the existence of mercury(II), GSH bound to mercury(II) due to the strong affinity between mercury(II) and -SH, thus eliminating the inhibition and restoring the oxTMB signal. A simple and effective colorimetric sensor was fabricated to detect mercury(II) based on the above principles. The proposed measurement had a linear range of 0.1–15 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.017 μM. It was shown that the established colorimetric sensing system could be successfully applied to detect mercury(II) in water samples, and the Fe3O4@Co3O4/CN nanozyme proved to be a promising candidate for biosensing application.

Abstract:Mercury and its compounds are known to be extremely toxic but widely distributed in environment. Although many works have been reported to efficiently detect mercury, development of simple and convenient sensors is still longed for quick analyzing mercury in water. In this work, a nanoscale metal-oxo cluster, ( n -Bu 4 N) 2 [Mo 5 NaO 13 (OCH 3 ) 4 (NO)], (MLPOM), organically-derivatized from monolacunary Lindqvist-type polyoxomolybdate, is found to specifically react with Hg 2+ in methanol/water via structural transformation. The MLPOM methanol solution displays a color change from purple to brown within seconds after being mixed with an aqueous solution containing Hg 2+ . By comparing the structure of polyoxomolybdate before and after reaction, the color change is revealed to be the essentially structural transformation of MLPOM accelerated by Hg 2+ . Based on this discovery, MLPOM could be utilized as a colorimetric sensor to sense the existence of Hg 2+ and a simple and label-free method is developed to selectively detect aqueous Hg 2+ . Furthermore, the colorimetric sensor has been applied to indicating mercury contamination in industrial sewage.

Abstract:In this study, we present a novel colorimetric method for the precise and sensitive detection of Hg ions utilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) produced and stabilized in an aqueous medium using Poly allyl amine hydrochloride (PAH). Nanoparticles were prepared from silver nitrate and NaBH4 along with CTAB at 26 ± 2 °C with an average size of 30.21 ± 6.5 nm. The prepared AgNPs solution exhibited yellowish brown color with a surface Plasmon peak at 420 nm. By adding Hg ions, the yellow color of the solution was transformed into a colorless suspension, and the color change was proportional to the Hg ion concentration. The presence of other metal ions had no effect on the color (sensitivity); confirming the selectivity of CTAB stabilized PAH capped AgNPs towards Hg ions. The generated probe has a 1 nM low detection limit when measured using a UV–visible spectrophotometer. The proposed approach has the potential to be utilized in real-time environments with greater precession by applying RGB values to make a revolutionary sensor using visible light imaging technique.

Abstract:Mercury, as one type of toxic heavy metal, represents a great threat to environmental and biological metabolic systems. Thus, reliable and sensitive quantitative detection of mercury levels is particularly meaningful for environmental protection and human health. We proposed a high-throughput single-particle color imaging strategy under dark-field microscopy (DFM) for mercury ions (Hg2+) detection by using individual concave cube Au nanoparticles as optical probes. In the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), Hg2+ was reduced to Hg which forms Au–Hg amalgamate with Au nanoparticles, altering their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images demonstrated that the concave cube Au nanoparticles were approaching to sphere upon increasing the concentration of Hg2+. The nanoparticles underwent an obvious color change from red to yellow, green, and finally blue under DFM due to the shape-evolution and LSPR changes. In addition, we demonstrated for the first time that the LSPR of Au–Hg amalgamated below 400 nm. Inspired by the above-mentioned results, single-particle color variations were digitalized by converting the color image into RGB channels to obtain (green+blue)/red intensity ratios [(G+B)/R]. The concentration-dependence change was quantified by statistically analyzing the (G+B)/R ratios of a large number of particles. A linear range from 10 to 2000 nM (R2 = 0.972) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.857 nM were acquired. Furthermore, many other metal ions, like Cu2+, Cr3+, etc., did not interfere with Hg2+ detection. More importantly, Hg2+ content in industrial wastewater samples and in the inner regions of human HepG2 cells was determined, showing great potential for developing a single-particle color imaging sensor in complex biological samples using concave cube Au nanoparticles as optical probes.

Abstract:The development of probes for selective detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) is an important mission to accomplish because of the toxicity and ubiquity of Hg2+. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent probe O-(N-butyl-1,8-naphthalimide)-4-yl-O-phenyl carbonothioate (CBONT) for selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+ by turn-on fluorescence spectroscopy. Probe CBONT exhibited a fast response for Hg2+ with excellent sensitivity (limit of detection = 1.9 nM, 3 sigma/slope), and it might be attributed to the adoption of a new recognition receptor of carbonothioate moiety. Additionally, probe CBONT could serve as a "naked-eye" indicator for Hg2+. Finally, probe CBONT could be successfully applied to detect the concentrations of Hg2+ in real water samples. Our proposed recognition receptor would open up new, exciting opportunities for designing highly selective and ultrasensitive fluorescent probes for the determination of Hg2+ in real water samples.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions exhibit significant toxicity and pose threats to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, the development of sensitive detection methods is crucial. Nanozyme-based heavy metal sensors have garnered attention, yet existing nanozymes often suffer from low catalytic activity, limited functionality, and unclear mechanisms. To address these issues, this study successfully synthesized an organic-inorganic hybrid nanozyme (NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Cu/CeO 2 ) using doping and composite techniques, creating a dual-functional sensor. It's worth noting that in NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Cu/CeO 2 , copper doping and heterojunction formation may increase oxygen vacancy concentration, promoting electron transfer. Compared to individual components like amino-terephthalic acid iron (III) metal-organic framework (NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)) and copper-doped cerium dioxide (Cu/CeO 2 ), this composite material exhibited enhanced peroxidase-like activity (oxidase-like, peroxidase-mimic, catalase-mimic, and superoxide dismutase-mimic). Particularly, NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Cu/CeO 2 displayed outstanding peroxidase-like activity, with K m values of 0.02 mM for TMB and 0.49 mM for H 2 O 2 , surpassing most nanozymes, along with high reaction rate (V max = 3.82 × 10 −5 mM/s). Leveraging NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Cu/CeO 2 's peroxidase-like behavior, TMB oxidation turned blue, inhibited by glutathione causing fading. Importantly, Hg 2+ complexed with glutathione's thiol group forming GSH-Hg 2+ , restoring the blue color. Utilizing these properties, a colorimetric sensor for Hg 2+ detection was developed. Furthermore, NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)@Cu/CeO 2 also exhibited remarkable fluorescence performance; Cu 2+ binding with amino groups quenched fluorescence. Exploiting this phenomenon, a fluorescent sensor for Cu 2+ detection was devised. Results demonstrated this dual-functional sensor's advantages: high sensitivity (LOD Hg 2+ = 0.7 nM, LOD Cu 2+ = 0.1 μM), strong selectivity, wide linear range (0.01 ∼ 4 μM and 8 ∼ 600 μM), and robust stability (90 % activity retained after three cycles).

Abstract:We report a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the detection of Hg(2+) ions in aqueous solution by using a thymine (T)-rich, mercury-specific oligonucleotide (MSO) probe and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs)-based signal amplification. The MSO probe contains seven thymine bases at both ends and a "mute" spacer in the middle, which, in the presence of Hg(2+), forms a hairpin structure via the Hg(2+)-mediated coordination of T-Hg(2+)-T base pairs. The thiolated MSO probe is immobilized on Au electrodes to capture free Hg(2+) in aqueous media, and the MSO-bound Hg(2+) can be electrochemically reduced to Hg(+), which provides a readout signal for quantitative detection of Hg(2+). This direct immobilization strategy leads to a detection limit of 1 microM. In order to improve the sensitivity, MSO probe-modified Au NPs are employed to amplify the electrochemical signals. Au NPs are comodified with the MSO probe and a linking probe that is complementary to a capture DNA probe immobilized on gold electrodes. We demonstrated that this Au NPs-based sensing strategy brings about an amplification factor of more than 3 orders of magnitude, leading to a limit of detection of 0.5 nM (100 ppt), which satisfactorily meets the sensitivity requirement of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This Au NPs-based Hg(2+) sensor also exhibits excellent selectivity over a spectrum of interference metal ions. Considering the high sensitivity and selectivity of this sensor, as well as the cost-effective and portable features of electrochemical techniques, we expect this Au NPs amplified electrochemical sensor will be a promising candidate for field detection of environmentally toxic mercury.

Methods for sensitive detection of mercury ion (Hg 2 ＋ ) have increasingly been developed over the past decade owing to the rapid development in nanotechnology. However, the limits of detection (LODs) of these methods are mostly not satisfactory enough to meet the demand of monitoring trace amounts of mercury ion. DNA thymine (T bases) can react with the mercury ion to form T-Hg 2 ＋ T structure, and this interaction has been proved to be much more stable than the interaction between thymine and its com-plementary adenine (A bases). Based on this principle, a series of ultra-sensitive DNA-based colorimetric biosensors, mostly using Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) as DNA carriers, have been designed for detection of mercury ion. In this study, we report a new strategy for highly sensitive Hg 2 ＋ detection based on Hg 2 ＋ -induced AuNPs assembly. AuNPs of different sizes (s-AuNPs of 18 nm and c-AuNPs of 52 nm) were modified with oligonucleotides containing a sequence of continuous T ba-ses. In the presence of Hg 2 ＋ , s-AuNPs would be bound to c-AuNPs in the solution owing to oligonucleotide hybridization, forming a core-satellites nanostrucure. This process was accompanied by a color change of the scattering light from green to orange as observed under dark-field microscopy and a corresponding distinct scattering peak shift. The scattering spectra of the AuNPs were obtained using a spectroscopic system which was established autonomously. The scattering peak shift of color-changed spots corresponded with Hg 2 ＋ concentration. It was increased linearly with logarithm of Hg 2 ＋ concentration over a wide range from 1 pmol/L to 1 nmol/L, with the correlation coefficient of 0.983 ( R 2 ＝ 0.983), and the detection limit of Hg 2 ＋ was estimated to be 1 pmol/L. Other metal ions, such as Ag ＋ , K ＋ , Ca 2 ＋ , Mg 2 ＋ , Zn 2 ＋ , Cd 2 ＋ , Fe 2 ＋ , Pb 2 ＋ , Ni 2 ＋ , Mn 2 ＋ , Al 3 ＋ , induced negligible scattering peak shifts for AuNPs under the same conditions, which showed that this strategy exhib-ited excellent selectivity towards Hg 2 ＋ . Moreover, satisfactory results were obtained when the proposed approach was applied to detect Hg 2 ＋ in real samples with recoveries of 98.7% ～ 103.1% and 105.6% ～ 108.2% for river water and tap water, re-spectively.
Ultrasensitive Quantum Dot Fluorescence Quenching Assay for Selective Detection of Mercury Ions in Drinking Water

Abstract:Mercury is one of the most acutely toxic substances at trace level to human health and living thing. Developing a rapid, cheap and water soluble metal sensor for detecting mercury ions at ppb level remains a challenge. Herein, a metal sensor consisting of MPA coated Mndoped ZnSe/ZnS colloidal nanoparticles was utilized to ultrasensitively and selectively detect Hg2+ ions with a low detection limit (0.1 nM) over a dynamic range from 0 to 20 nM. According to strong interaction between thiol(s) and mercury ions, mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) was used as a highly unique acceptor for mercury ions in the as-obtained ultrasensitive sensor. In the presence of mercury ions, colloidal nanoparticles rapidly agglomerated due to changes of surface chemical properties, which results in severe quenching of fluorescent intensity. Meanwhile, we find that the original ligands are separated from the surface of colloidal nanoparticles involving strongly chelation between mercury ion and thiol(s) proved by controlled IR analysis. The result shows that the QD-based metal ions sensor possesses satisfactory precision, high sensitivity and selectivity, and could be applied for the quantification analysis of real samples.
Ultrasensitive and Selective Detection of Copper (II) and Mercury (II) Ions by Dye-Coded Silver Nanoparticle-Based SERS Probes

Abstract:A simple and distinctive method for the ultrasensitive detection of Cu2+ and Hg2+ based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using cysteine-functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) attached with Raman-labeling molecules was developed. The glycine residue in a silver nanoparticle-bound cysteine can selectively bind with Cu2+ and Hg2+ and form a stable inner complex. Silver nanoparticles co-functionalized with cysteine and 3,5-Dimethoxy-4-(6′-azobenzotriazolyl)phenol (AgNP conjugates) can be used to detect Cu2+ and Hg2+ based on aggregation-induced SERS of the Raman tags. The addition of SCN− to the analyte can successfully mask Hg2+ and allow for the selective detection of Cu2+. This SERS-based assay showed an unprecedented limit of detection (LOD) of 10pM for Cu2+ and 1pM for Hg2+; these LODs are a few orders of magnitude more sensitive than the typical colorimetric approach based on the aggregation of noble nanoparticles. The analysis of real water samples diluted with pure water was performed and verified this conclusion. We envisage that this SERS-based assay may provide a general and simple approach for the detection of other metal ions of interest, which can be adopted from their corresponding colorimetric assays that have already been developed with significantly improved sensitivity and thus have wide-range applications in many areas.
Low-cost signal enhanced colorimetric and SERS dual-mode paper sensor for rapid and ultrasensitive screening of mercury ions in tea

Abstract:Mercury ions (Hg2+) are highly toxic heavy metals that are commonly found in natural environments. Owning to their non-biodegradability and accumulation in the food chain, the precise detection of trace amounts of Hg2+ is essential for preventing chronic accumulation and ensuring food safety. In this study, we present a dual-mode paper sensor for simultaneous colorimetric and Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) detection of Hg2+ in tea, achieving ultrasensitive, rapid, and on-site screening. 4-Mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) was effectively chemisorbed onto the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), acting as a signal probe for colorimetric methods. Moreover, it can produce plasmonic hot spots for SERS by interacting with the pyridine ring. To enhance the signal intensity of both colorimetry and SERS, a silver shell is in-situ grown on the surface of AuNPs captured on the paper sensor by reduction of Ag+, achieving signal amplification. The visual limit of detection (LOD) for the colorimetric biosensor is 2.5 pM, while the LOD of SERS is 0.48 pM with this dual-mode paper sensor. The sensitivity of both the colorimetric method and SERS was improved by approximately 200 and 500 times, respectively, with the designed signal amplification strategy. The system allows for multiple parallel screening of the same sample, ensuring accurate results without any false-positive or false-negative. This study provides a valuable platform for the accurate detection of various other heavy metal ions and provides effective strategies for improving the performance of colorimetric methods.
Gold nanoparticle-enhanced D-shaped optical fiber sensor for mercury ion detection

Abstract:Mercury ions (Hg2+) are highly toxic heavy metal ions that pose serious health risks to humans when present at concentrations above the safety threshold. Therefore, the development of a rapid and effective Hg2+ detection method is of significant importance. In this study, based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology integrated with COMSOL simulation analysis, a highly sensitive and selective Hg2+ sensing system is constructed. Initially, gold nanoparticles and the surface of a fiber-optic gold film are modified by sodium sulfide (Na2S). In the presence of Hg2+, the sulfur ions on the modified gold film and gold nanoparticles specifically bind to Hg2+, forming the composite structure Au/S-Hg2+-S/AuNPS. Due to the strong electromagnetic coupling between the gold nanoparticles and the gold film, a significant SPR wavelength shift occurs. These results show that the Hg2+ sensor has high sensitivity and enhanced selectivity. The detection limit for mercury ions was 8.15 nM, and the recovery rate in real environmental samples was up to 90.1-97.3%. This sensing system provides an alternative method for rapid and accurate determination of mercury content.
