Abstract:In this study, a naked-eye colorimetric sensor was fabricated based on a Schiff base (-SH) derivative immobilized onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microspheres. The surface morphology of PVA-SH was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PVA-SH microspheres could selectively detect Cu2+ by a visible color change. This novel chemosensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Cu2+, which can induce a color change of PVA-SH from white to yellow. PVA-SH exhibited a detection limit of 0.086 M for Cu2+. Moreover, this simple and cost-efficient chemosensor was used for detecting Cu2+ in actual environmental water samples.

Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.

The fluorescence intensity of the chemosensor in CH3CN solution was enhanced 160-fold after the addition of 10 equiv. Cu2+ over other metal ions. Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective method is proposed for colorimetric detection of copper ions using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of Cu2+ induces the aggregation of 4-MBA modified AgNPs, this resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. The concentration of Cu2+ could be quantified by naked eyes or a UV–vis spectrometer. The absorbance ratio (A560nm/A393nm) is linear with the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 1×10−7M to 1×10−4M with a coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is as low as 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method could be successfully applied to determine Cu2+ in drinking water.

Abstract:Herein, a highly efficient colorimetric chemosensor incorporating ion-imprinted electrospun nanofiber was developed for the removal and detection of Cu2+ ions. In this regard, PVA/chitosan composites were used as the polymeric matrix, and 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol was employed for complex formation. The prepared naked-eye sensor was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing the morphological, structural, and molecular properties of the sensor. The results showed that the colorimetric chemosensor based on copper-imprinted nanofiber (Cu-INF) possesses higher selectivity for Cu2+ compared to interference ions. The selectivity coefficient (k) and relative selectivity coefficient (K') indicated the selective behavior of Cu-INF in the adsorption of Cu2+ in binary systems including Cu2+/Co2+, Cu2+/Ni2+, and Cu2+/Zn2+. Furthermore, the ion-imprinted nanofiber was used for the preconcentration of copper ions, demonstrating a high adsorption capacity of 128.205 mg g-1 for Cu2+. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics of Cu2+ on Cu-INF followed the Freundlich adsorption isotherm and a pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The developed sensor exhibited a linear detection range of 5 × 10-8 - 2 × 10-7 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.07 × 10-8 M for copper ions. The results indicated satisfactory adsorption and successful detection of Cu2+ at trace concentrations.

Abstract:A dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence pH sensor was fabricated from carbon dots (CDs). It exhibited a pH response via both fluorescence and visible colorimetric observation. The CDs solution changed from red to yellow when the pH changed from acid to alkaline. Meanwhile, the color of pH test paper that incorporated the CDs changed from purple-red to orange and then to yellow. The CD fluorescence maximum was at 630 nm in acid solution and 590 nm under neutral and alkaline conditions. The fluorescence of the pH test paper changed from red to orange and then to yellow, which was better than that of the pure CDs solution. The CDs exhibited highly selective and reversible fluorescence quenching with respect to Cu2+ ions because of strong binding and fast chelating kinetics. There was a linear relationship between fluorescence quenching and Cu2+ concentration, suggesting the other promising practical usage of this sensing system. The versatile CDs-based pH sensor thus provides a basis for developing sustainable and fast-response dual-mode pH meters as well as Cu2+ sensing.

Abstract:Detection of Cu(II) is very important in disease diagnose, biological system detection and environmental monitoring. Previously, we found that the product TPE-CS prepared by attaching the chromophores of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) to the chitosan (CS) chains showed excellent fluorescent properties. In this study, we tried to use TPE-CS for detecting Cu(II) because of the stable complexation of CS with heavy metals and the luminosity mechanism of the Restriction of Intramolecular Rotations (RIR) for aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active materials. The fluorescence intensity changed when TPE-CS was contacted with different metal ions, to be specific, no change for Na + , slightly increase for Hg 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ due to the RIR caused by the complexation between CS and metal ions. However, for Cu 2+ , an obvious fluorescence decrease was observed because of the Photoinduced-Electron-Transfer (PET). Moreover, we found that the quenched FL intensity of TPE-CS was proportional to the concentration of Cu(II) in the range of 5 μmol/L to 100 μmol/L, which provided a new way to quantitatively detect Cu(II). Besides, TPE-CS has excellent water-solubility as well as absorbability (the percentage of removal, R = 84%), which is an excellent detection probe and remover for Cu(II).

Abstract:A new rhodamine B derivative colorimetric and fluorescent sensor (1) was synthesized by condensation reaction of rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, which showed reversible and highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu2+ over other examined metal ions. Upon addition of Cu2+, sensor 1 exhibits remarkably enhanced absorbance intensity and color change from colorless to pink in DMSO and MeCN aqueous buffer solution or pure MeCN, and shows significant off–on fluorescence accompanied by color changes from colorless to orange in MeCN. The sensor 1 was also successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ in water samples.

Abstract:In this paper, CN-DPA was prepared as an effective colorimetric and fluorescent probe for copper ions (Cu2+) in aqueous solution. It exhibits good sensitivity and selectivity for Cu2+ over other metal ions both in aqueous solution and on a simple colorimetric paper-made test kit. Upon addition of Cu2+, a remarkable color change from purple to colorless was easily observed by the naked eye, and a fluorescence quenching was also determined. Furthermore, CN-DPA can be used to quantitatively detect Cu2+. The linear range was 0-5 mu M determined by absorption spectrometry. All these selective and sensitive results indicate that CN-DPA could meet the selective requirements for biomedical and environmental application and be sensitive enough to detect Cu2+ in environmental water samples, even in drinking water, which has a limit of 20 mu M defined by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
An innovative Schiff-base colorimetric chemosensor for the selective detection of Cu2+ ions and its applications

Abstract:A novel Schiff base moiety, (E)-4-(1-hydrazonoethyl)benzene-1,3-diol (2), and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde were condensed in a 1 : 1 molar ratio to generate 4-((E)-1-(((Z)-2,4dihydroxybenzylidene)hydrazono)ethyl)benzene-1,3-diol (L), which was then characterized using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), 1H-NMR, 13C NMR, and single-crystal XRD techniques. UV-vis absorbance measurements were used to determine whether the Schiff base could detect the cupric ions more effectively than the other transition metal ions. When Cu2+ ions were involved, a new band was observed at 462 nm. From the Job plot, the binding stoichiometry for the anticipated L : Cu2+ partnership is determined to be 1 : 1. For the purpose of validating structural correlations and absorption data, DFT simulations were performed. Further, docking studies for L indicated high binding affinity for human hemoglobin, providing vital information about the ligand's favorable binding locations inside hemoglobin binding sites and the consequent interactions with HHb. The binding coefficient and limit of detection were found to be 3.02 × 104 M-1 and 42.09 nM, respectively. Reversibility of the complex was seen upon the addition of EDTA to the L-Cu2+ solution, and a colorimetric variation simulating the "INHIBIT" molecular logic gate was seen upon the addition of Cu2+ and EDTA to L. Furthermore, the chemosensor's potential application in the detection of Cu2+ in the solid state by chemosensor L also confirms its usefulness in real-world applications emphasizing its versatility and practical utility.

Abstract:Detection of the Cu 2+ ions is crucial because of its environmental and biological implications. The fluorescent-based organic sensors are not suitable for Cu 2+ detection due to their short penetration depth caused by the UV/visible excitation source. Therefore, we have demonstrated a highly sensitive and selective near-infrared (NIR) excitable poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) coated upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) based sensor for Cu 2+ detection. We construct the PAA modified Na(Yb, Nd)F 4 @Na(Yb, Gd)F 4 :Tm@NaGdF 4 core-shell-shell structured UCNPs based sensor via a co-precipitation route. The upconversion emission intensity of the PAA-UCNPs decreases linearly with the increase in the Cu 2+ concentration from 0.125 to 3.125 μM due to the copper carboxylate complex formation between Cu 2+ and PAA-UCNPs. The calculated detection limit of the PAA-UCNPs based sensor is 0.1 μM. The PAA-UCNPs based sensor is very sensitive and selective toward detecting the Cu 2+ ions, even when the Cu 2+ co-exist with other metal ions. The EDTA addition has significantly reversed the upconversion emission quenching by forming the EDTA-Cu 2+ complex based on their greater affinity toward the Cu 2+ . Therefore, the PAA-UCNPs based sensor can be a promising candidate for Cu 2+ detection because of their higher sensitivity and selectivity under 980 nm NIR excitation.

Abstract:The colorimetric detection of metal ions is significantly applied for industrial, ecological, and medical applications. Here, we synthesize 4-((Z)-1-(((Z)-(2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)-hydrazineylidene)ethyl)benzene-1,3-diol a new chemosensor that acts for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ and Pd2+ ions to the ligand. The recognition is determined by redshift in UV-visible, emission intensity changes in fluorescence, colorless to yellow coloration, and cyclic voltammetric signal changes with the addition of Cu2+ and Pd2+ ions to the ligand. The insights into the color changes are described visually and under different wavelengths of light. The designed colorimetric sensing model is developed as paper, cotton, and mask-based assay for Pd2+ and Cu2+ ion. The chemosensor reversibility is checked with the addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and color changes are observed with naked eyes. The infrared (IR) spectral analysis describes ligand's binding behavior towards selective metal ions. In addition, the chemosensor works for low detection limit (4.906 x 10(-7) M for Cu2+, 9.802 x 10(-7) M for Pd2+), limit of quantitation (1.636 x 10(-6) M for Cu2+, 3.267 x 10(-6) M for Pd2+) with good association affinity (1.273 x 10(5) M-1 for HMHEB-Cu2+ binding, 6.983 x 10(10) M-2 for HMHEB-Pd2+ binding).

Abstract:A new Naphthalene derivative with two urea groups, 1,8-bis[N-(o-methoxyphenyl)ureido]naphthalene (BMPUN), was synthesized for detecting Cu(II) ratiometrically. Complexation between urea groups of BMPUN and Cu(II) with high selectivity gives rise to a great red-shift from 380 to 440 nm in the emission spectra. The introduction of electron donating groups is helpful to increase the electron density of the nitrogen atom of urea groups and then enhance the ability of complexation for Cu(II).

Abstract:A highly selective and sensitive acridine-based colorimetric sensor 2-((7-chloro-2-methoxybenzo[b][1,5]naphthyridin-10-yl)amino)phenol (NAP) was developed for detection of Cu2+ ions both in aqueous solution and on test papers. Abstract:A Cu2+-specific colorimetric sensor of a 1,8-naphthalimide chromophore integrated with a 2-aminodiphenylamine (2-adpa)-based receptor was designed and synthesized. Sensor had high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu2+ in neutral aqueous buffer solution. The analytical detection limit (ADL) was 3.0 x 10(-7) M. Based on the Cu2+-induced deprotonation of the diarylamino "NH" moiety, the coordination mode was proposed with 1:1 stoichiometry between and Cu2+. These results opened up possibilities for the construction of novel colorimetric sensors with a red-shift absorption in a D-pi-A system.

Abstract:A perylene bisimide derivative (PBI) based colorimetric and fluorescent bifunctional probe PAM-PBI was designed and synthesized. It was highly selective and sensitive for distinguishing both Cu2+ and F− from other ions through a conspicuous change of UV–vis and fluorescence spectra. The recognition of Cu2+ by PAM-PBI showed an obvious color change from rose red to purple in aqueous solution, while the sensing of F− gave a marked color change from rose red to light green in THF.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the fabrication and analytical characteristics of fluorescence-based copper ion-sensing glass slides. To construct the sensor, a naphthalimide derivative N -allyl-4-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)ethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide (1) with a terminal double bond was synthesized and photo-copolymerized with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on a glass surface treated with a silanizing agent. In the presence of Cu 2+ at pH 7.24, the resulting optical sensor undergoes fluorescence quenching. Thus, the proposed sensor with visible excitation can behave as a fluorescent sensor for the selective detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, the sensor exhibits satisfactory selectivity, reproducibility and response time. The sensing membrane possesses a relatively long lifetime of at least 2 months. The linear response range covers a concentration range of Cu 2+ from 4.0 × 10 -7 to 6.0 × 10 −4 mol/L and the detection limit is 2.0 × 10 −7 mol/L. The determination of Cu 2+ in river water samples shows satisfactory results.
