Abstract:A new Schiff-base fluorescence probe CS containing benzimidazole and coumarin fluorophores was synthesized and characterized by NMR, IR and ESI-MS. Fluorescence and absorption spectra show the unique changes in the presence of Hg2+ and Cu2+. Hg2+ induces a remarkable fluorescence enhancement and results in mercury-promoted hydrolysis of a mercury-CS complex to convert the imine group to the aldehyde group. Cu2+ leads to a colorimetric change from colorless to pale yellow and causes formation of a copper-CS complex. Thus, CS can act as a fluorescent chemodosimeter for Hg2+ and a naked-eye chemosensor Cu2+. The cell imaging experiments for Hg2+ show a slow enhancement of a bright blue fluorescence with increasing incubation time, while Cu2+ instantly quenches the fluorescence and then the fluorescence intensity has no further change by extending the incubation time. Therefore, the probe CS shows its potential application for simultaneous differential detection of Hg2+ and Cu2+ in living cells based on the fluorescence response time. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A stable and highly visible-light responsive semiconductor material of AgCuO/Cu2O was prepared to develop a colorimetric and photoelectrochemical (PEC) dual-sensing mode for broad-range Hg2+ detection. The AgCuO/Cu2O was evidenced with Hg2+-enhanced peroxidase activity. In the solution, the appearance of Hg2+ promotes AgCuO/Cu2O to catalyze more 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidization, deepening the color of the TMB solution and increasing the light absorption, thus realizing the colorimetric detection of Hg2+. The linear response range is 1 nmol·L-1 to 10 μmol·L-1, and the detection limit is 3.5 nmol·L-1. On the electrode surface, the emergence of Hg2+ facilitates AgCuO/Cu2O to convert more 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) into insoluble precipitates benzo-4-chlorohexadienone (4-CD), depressing the PEC signal and realizing the PEC detection of Hg2+ with a linear response range of 10 pmol·L-1 to 10 μmol·L-1 and a detection limit of 8.7 pmol·L-1. The enhancement of the enzyme-mimicking activity of AgCuO/Cu2O by Hg2+ is closely related to the in-situ formation of the Ag-Hg amalgam. The colorimetric and the PEC sensing modal complement each other, significantly broadening the detection range of Hg2+ and ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the results. The work paves the way for sensitive, selective, and accurate determination of Hg2+ in serum samples.

Abstract:In this study, a gold nanoparticles colorimetric probe (AuNPs) with direct response to mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) were developed using treated N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and chloroauric acid (HAuCl 4 ) as precursors. NMP showed good reducibility after high temperature hydrolysis and could be used as reducing and stabilizing agent to synthesize AuNPs. The prepared AuNPs have obvious characteristic absorption peaks and appear wine-red. At the same time, it was found that the presence of Hg 2+ can cause the aggregation of AuNPs, increased the absorbance at 700 nm, and changed the color of the solution into blue-gray. This method is capable of sensitive and specific determination of Hg 2+ ranging from 1 to 30 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) at 0.3 μM. The method showed good specificity for the determination of Hg 2+ and has the potential to be applied to Hg 2+ detection in sewage samples in the environment.

Abstract:Developing a rapid, low-cost, and multimode detection method for heavy metal ions remains a compelling goal for many applications, including food safety, environmental and biological analysis. This study investigated the influence of Hg2+ on the peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) decorated on carbon dots (CDs) from lysine (denoted as GNP@CDs). A new type of Hg2+-triggered peroxidase-like activity of GNP@CDs was discovered, which could catalyze the oxidation of the colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue TMB. Based on the regulation of the catalytically triggered activity, a sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of Hg2+ was developed, with a linear range of 7-150 nM, providing a limit of detection as low as 3.7 nM. The sensor is simple and rapid, and was successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ enrichment in chlorella, suggesting a promising application in biological analysis.
A colorimetric mercury(II) assay based on the Hg(II)-stimulated peroxidase mimicking activity of a nanocomposite prepared from graphitic carbon nitride and gold nanoparticles

Abstract:A one-step reduction method was used for the preparation of stable graphitic carbon nitride-gold nanoparticles (g-C3N4-Au) nanocomposites from ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets and chloroauric acid by using NaBH4 as a reducing agent under ultrasonication. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy etc. The results revealed that the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are uniformly formed on the g-C3N4 nanosheets. It is found that the peroxidase-like catalytic activity of this nanocomposite for the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine by H2O2 to form a blue-colored product is strongly enhanced in the presence of Hg(II). Based on this phenomenon, a sensitive "turn-on" colorimetric assay for Hg(II) was developed that works at physiological pH values. Under optimal conditions, the absorption signal at 652 nm increases linearly with Hg(II) concentration in the range from 5 to 500 nM. A detection limit as low as 3.0 nM was achieved. This assay has excellent selectivity over other metal ions. It was successfully applied to the determination of Hg(II) in real water samples. The method is cost-effective, rapid, and allows for visual detection. Graphical abstract The nanocomposite composed of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and gold nanoparticles (g-C3N4-AuNPs) can catalyze tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation by H2O2 to produce light-blue product (oxTMB). Abstract:Developing convenient and reliable methods for Hg2+ monitoring is highly important. Some precious metal nanomaterials with intriguing peroxidase-like activity have been used for highly sensitive Hg2+ detection. However, H2O2 must be added during these detections, which impedes practical applications of Hg2+ sensors due to its susceptible decomposition by environmental factors. Herein, we discovered that the combination of Hg2+ and palladium metal-organic framework@graphene (Pd-MOF@GNs) exhibits oxidase-like activity (OXD). In the absence of H2O2, this activity not only catalyzes the oxidation of chromogenic substrates such as 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) or o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce a color change but also enhances the electrical signals during OPD oxidation. Based on these properties, an effective and convenient dual-mode colorimetric and electrochemical sensor for Hg2+ has been developed. The colorimetric and amperometric linear relationships for Hg2+ were 0.045 μM-0.25 mM and 0.020 μM-2.0 mM, respectively. The proposed strategy shows good recovery in real sample tests, indicating promising prospects for multiple environmental sample detection of Hg2+ without relying on H2O2. The colorimetric and electrochemical dual-mode Hg2+ sensor is expected to hold great potentials in applications such as environmental monitoring, rapid field detection, and integration into smartphone detection of Hg2+.

Abstract:A multiple signal amplification strategy was designed for an ultrasensitive competitive immunoassay for Hg2+. This strategy was achieved using graphene conjugated with a large number of CdSe quantum dots to enhance the basal signal and enormous horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to consume the coreactant H2O2 generated in situ. The immunosensor was constructed by immobilization of coating antigen on poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) graphene CdSe composites (PDDA-GN-CdSe), and a strong electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal was obtained. When the immunosensor was immersed in antibody AuNPs HRP composites, the ECL signal greatly decreased, which was ascribed to the bound enzyme on the electrode surface. The self-produced coreactant H2O2 was consumed by o-phenylenediamine in the presence of enzyme, effectively decreasing the ECL intensity from the quantum dots. The Hg2+ in solution and the corresponding coating antigen competed for the limited antibody, and thus, the ECL intensity was linearly dependent on the logarithm of the mercury(II) concentration from 0.2 to 1000 ng mL(-1) with a detection limit of 0.06 ng mL(-1). The immunoassay exhibited good stability and accuracy and acceptable reproducibility, indicating that it provides a promising approach for the detection of trace mercury and other small molecular compounds in environmental samples.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal with high toxicity and easy migration; it can be enriched through the food chain, and cause serious threats to the natural environment and human health. So, the development of a method that can be used to detect mercury ions (Hg2+) in the environment, in cells, and in organisms is very important. Here, a new 7-hydroxycoumarin-derived carbonothioate-based probe (CC-Hg) was designed and synthesized for detection of Hg2+. After addition of Hg2+, a large fluorescence enhancement was observed due to the formation of 7-hydroxyl, which reinforced the intramolecular charge transfer process. The CC-Hg probe had good water solubility and selectivity. Moreover, the probe was able to detect Hg2+ quantitatively over the concentration range 0-2 mu M and with a detection limit of 7.9 nM. Importantly, we successfully applied the probe to detect Hg2+ in water samples, in living cells, and in zebrafish. The experimental results demonstrated its potential value in practical applications.
A Colorimetric/fluorescent Dual-Mode Sensor for Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Hg2+

Abstract:A highly sensitive colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode sensor based on hybridization chain reaction (HCR) combining multifunctional Au NPs is presented for the detection of Hg2+ in aqueous solution. In Hg2+ absent solution, the surface of Au NPs was covered by hairpin auxiliary DNAs and a single strand DNA (ssDNA), which prevented Au NPs from salt-induced aggregation. At the same time, the fluorescence intensity of the dye-labeled hairpin probes was significantly quenched by Au NPs. In the presence of Hg2+, T-Hg2+-T coordination chemistry between helper DNA and the hairpin probes was induced which triggered the formation of extended double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) polymers via HCR. The formed dsDNA polymers were stiffer which couldn’t attach to Au NPs, resulting in a red-to-blue color change along with salt-induced aggregation of Au NPs for colorimetric sensing. Meanwhile, the fluorescence of dye-labeled DNA turns on. Due to the HCR amplification effect, a highly sensitive detection of Hg2+ was achieved with detection limit of 0.1nM. Colorimetry is suitable for the analysis in salt solution with concentration lower than 100mM. It serves as an intuitive method that Hg2+ down to 1.0nM could be identified by naked eyes. For high-concentration salt solutions such as industrial effluent, fluorescent sensing acts as a better choice. Both the color and fluorescence changes of the proposed sensor exhibited high selectivity against other metal ions. Lake water was collected and analyzed using the dual-mode sensor, the results confirmed the practicability of the proposed approach.
A Simple Colorimetric Sensor Based on Anti-Aggregation of Gold Nanoparticles for Hg2+ Detection

Abstract:A new method has been proposed to realize the visual detection of Hg2+ via anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The positively charged Au NPs were prepared using poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA) as reducer and stabilizer. In the presence of cysteine, the color of Au NPs solution turned from ruby red to royal purple, indicating the aggregation of Au NPs. Owing to the high stability constant of cysteine with Hg2+, the pre-incubation of Hg2+ with cysteine would form Hg2+–cysteine complexes and significantly reduce the concentration of free cysteine molecules, thus the aggregation of Au NPs was interrupted since there was not enough inducer. With the increase of Hg2+ concentration, the color of the Au NPs solution would progress from purple to red, allowing the visual detection of Hg2+ ranging from 5.0×10−8 to 1.0×10−5M, with a detection limit of 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method is convenient, low-cost and free of complex equipment, making it possible to analyze Hg2+ in drinking water, rain water or water extracted air samples.
Colorimetric oligonucleotide-based sensor for ultra-low Hg2+ in contaminated environmental medium: Convenience, sensitivity and mechanism

Abstract:A colorimetric sensor for detection of Hg2+ is developed via graphene oxide/gold nanoparticles (GO/AuNPs) nanocomposite as peroxidase mimic. In the absence of Hg2+, the adsorption of ss-DNA on GO/AuNPs resulted in the decrease of peroxidase-like activity of GO/AuNPs, which catalyzed the oxidation of 3, 3, 5, 5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to be very light blue. In the presence of Hg2+, the oligonucleotides of T-Hg2+-T conformation formed by thymine-Hg(II)-thymine interaction could not be adsorbed or bonded on GO/AuNPs, and the GO/AuNPs resumed their original high activity of peroxidase mimic and catalyzed the oxidation of TMB into distinct blue product. Under optimized conditions, the absorbance value at the wavelength of 655 nm (A655) was linearly related with the concentration of Hg2+ in the range between 5.2 × 10-9 M and 1.2 × 10-7 M with a detection limit of 3.8 × 10-10 M. By visual observation with the naked eye, Hg2+ as low as 3.3 × 10-7 M could cause color change in solution. The specific T-Hg2+-T binding made it easy to selectively detect Hg2+. The results show that the colorimetric assay offers great potential for the detection of Hg2+ in real samples.

A colorimetric platform for sensitive sensing of Hg2+ and S2- based on Se-AuNPs with Hg2+-activated peroxidase-like activity

Abstract:Herein, the selenium (Se) modified gold nanoparticles (Se-AuNPs) was synthesized using cerium doped carbon dots (Ce-CDs) as a reducing agent and template. As desired, Se-AuNPs displays enhanced peroxidase (POD)-like activity in the presence of Hg2+. The mechanism for the enhanced activity was attributed to the increased affinity between Se-AuNPs-Hg2+ and the substrate, in which Se and Au elements have a strong binding capacity to Hg2+, forming Hg-Se bonds and Au-Hg amalgam to generate more ·OH. This POD-like activity of Se-AuNPs-Hg2+ correlates with the colorimetric reaction by the catalytic reaction between 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2O2. The oxidation of TMB was completely inhibited by the introduction of the reductive S2-. Based on the above findings, a strategy for the colorimetric detection of Hg2+ and S2- by Se-AuNPs was established with linear ranges of 0.33-66 μg/L and 0.625-75 μg/L, and low detection limits of 0.17 μg/L and 0.12 μg/L (3.3 δ/k), respectively. When the colorimetric probes for detection of Hg2+ and S2- was applied in environmental water samples, the recoveries were in the range of 90.3-108.0 %. This method will provide a new idea for the colorimetric detection strategy of Hg2+ due to the strong interaction between Hg and Se.
Dual-functional Fe-MoS2@AuNPs for simple and sensitive colorimetric-electrochemical coupled detection of Hg2+

Abstract:A nanocomposite of AuNPs decorated on Fe-doped MoS 2 (Fe-MoS 2 @AuNPs) was prepared for colorimetric-electrochemical (C-E) coupled detection of Hg 2+ . The presence of Hg 2+ can enhance the colorimetric reaction between TMB and H 2 O 2 catalyzed by the peroxidase-like activity of Fe-MoS 2 @AuNPs, and thus, selective colorimetric sensing of Hg is established with a linear range of 1–40 μM and a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Then, the left TMB after colorimetric reaction, which is inversely proportional to the concentration of Hg 2+ , is electrochemically monitored by the electrocatalysis of the same Fe-MoS 2 @AuNPs. Thus C-E coupled method can not only improves the sensitivity for Hg 2+ (linear range of 0.5–200 nM and detection limit of 0.2 nM) but also overcomes the interference from the colored sample. Such dual-functional nanocomposite can greatly simplify the C-E coupled detection procedure and extend its application area for detecting Hg 2+ and other toxic material.

Abstract:In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and rhodamine B (RhB) were physically mixed to construct a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent sensor (CQDs@RhB) for the quantitative and visual detection of Hg 2+ . After adding Hg 2+ , the emission peak of CQDs at 445 nm was quenched and the peak of RhB at 575 nm remained unchanged; the ratio of the two emission peaks had a linear relationship with the Hg 2+ concentration. The CQDs@RhB had a detection range of 0–15 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) is 65.93 nM and a color change from blue to pink was visible to the naked eye under ultraviolet light. The study revealed a static quenching mechanism of CQDs@RhB. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of Hg 2+ in real water and rice samples with satisfactory results. In addition, a portable fluorescent paper-based sensor platform was developed using computer software assistance. The relationship with Hg 2+ concentration was constructed by converting the pictures obtained under ultraviolet light to RGB color mode for visualization and quantitative detection of Hg 2+ . This study provides a valuable strategy for constructing a rapid detection system for Hg 2+ in the field.

Detection is accomplished by reducing Hg(II) ions to elemental Hg so that an Ag/Hg amalgam is formed on the surface of the TAgNPs. This leads to the inhibition of the etching TAgNPs by chloride ions. Correspondingly, a distinct color transition can be observed that goes from yellow to brown, purple, and blue. The color alterations extracted from the red, green, and blue part of digital (RGB) images can be applied to the determination of Hg(II). The relationship between the Euclidean distances (EDs), i.e. the square roots of the sums of the squares of the ΔRGB values, vary in the 5 nM to 100 nM Hg(II) concentration range, and the limit of detection is as low as 0.35 nM. The color changes also allow for a visual estimation of the concentrations of Hg(II). Abstract:Facile and ultrasensitive detection of Hg2+ in water environment remains challenging. Exonuclease III (Exo-III)-assisted target recycling is one of the most popular amplification strategies. Although the magnesium (II) ions are widely acting as cofactors of Exo-III, we recognized that Mg2+ cofactors would strongly disturb the charge distribution on citrate-stablized gold nanoparticles (in the general sense, unmodified AuNPs) surface, thus generate false positive colorimetric signals. To address this issue, we first put forward the view that the cobalt (II) ions can function as the Exo-III cofactor and successfully construct a novel label-free colorimetric aptasensor for facile and ultrasensitive detection of Hg2+ using Hg2+ -triggered Exo-III-assisted signal amplification and unmodified AuNPs as indicators. A hairpin-looped DNA probe was rationally designed with thymine-rich recognition termini and specifically recognized trace Hg2+ by a stable T-Hg2+-T structure. A blue-to-red color change of AuNPs with the addition of Hg2+ provided the quantitative detection of Hg2+ with a limit of detection of 0.2 nM and a linear working range from 0.5 nM to 5.0 nM. The whole testing time for one assay was approximately 40 min. Real water samples, even containing Hg2+ at 1 nM, could be determined by the aptasensor with recovery rates from 97% to 103%.
