Abstract:We report a new structure for broadband antireflection coating by dip-coating technique, which has minimal cost and is compatible with large-scale manufacturing. The coatings are prepared by depositing SiO2 sol-gel film on a glass substrate, subsequently depositing SiO2 single-layer particle coating through electrostatic attraction, and depositing a final very thin SiO2 sol-gel film to improve the mechanical strength of the whole coating structure. The refractive index of the structure changes gradually from the top to the substrate. The transmittance of a glass substrate has been experimentally found to be improved in the spectral range of 400-1 400 nm and in the incidence angle range from 0 degrees to at least 45 degrees. The mechanical strength is immensely improved because of the additional thin SiO2 sol-gel layer. The surface texture can be applied to the substrates of different materials and shapes as an add-on coating.

Abstract:A new silica antireflective coating with improved hydrophobicity and optical stability in a vacuum is obtained by a two-step route. Firstly, silica sols are prepared with a sol-gel process, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate is utilized as a precursor. And by introduction of fluorine containing glycol into the sols, the porosity of silica particles and surface polarity of the coatings are decreased. Afterward, coatings are constructed with low surface roughness by modification of PMBA-PMMA. The coatings retain transmission of up to 99.6%, and laser damage threshold of about 50 J/cm2 at a wavelength of 532 nm (1-on-1, 10 ns).

Abstract:A double-layer double-wavelength antireflective (AR) coating with 100% transmittance at both 1064 nm and 532 nm, which is very important in high power laser systems, is designed using thin film design software (TFCalc). The refractive indices for the bottom and top layers of the designed AR coating are about 1.30 and 1.14. A simple, template-free sol-gel route is proposed to prepare the superhydrophobic ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) thin film, which has an ultralow refractive index, by silica particle surface modification using hexamethylisilazane (HMDS); this treatment decreases the refractive index of the silica thin film from 1.23 to 1.13. The formation mechanism of the ultralow refractive index thin film is proposed. The particle surface modification with HMDS significantly improves the hydrophobicity of the coated film; the water contact angle of the film increases from 23.4 degrees to 160 degrees. The bottom layer, which has a refractive index of 1.30, is prepared from acid-catalyzed and base-catalyzed mixed silica sol. A double-layer silica AR coating is obtained with transmittances of 99.6% and 99.8% at 532 nm and 1064 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A single layer sol-gel derived TiO2 thin films and 6 periods SiO2/TiO2 multilayer coating were designed and prepared on GaAs substrates as anti-reflection coating or near-infrared-reflective coating for high power semiconductor laser applications. Crack free TiO2 thin films having thickness of 80similar to150 nm, and refractive indices of 1.8similar to2.1 have been obtained by simply sol-gel method upon heating at different temperatures. The obtained TiO2 thin films On GaAs substrates have shown reflectance of :5 1% in the wavelength of about 808 nm Thin films; of TiO2 and SiO2 were also used to fabricate near infrared reflector on GaAs substrates. The reflector consisted of 6 SiO2/TiO2 bi-layers, designed with a high-reflective band in the wavelength of 1064 nm A minimum transmittance of : 2% in the wavelength range between 950 and 1100 nm has been obtained in the present multiplayer SiO2/TiO2 coating.

Abstract:Double-layer tri-wavelength antireflective (AR) coating effective simultaneously at 351, 527 and 1,053 nm has been designed and prepared by the sol–gel process. The refractive index and film thickness of bottom layer and up layer are 1.27 and 113 nm, and 1.17 and 245 nm, respectively. The bottom layer with refractive index of 1.27 was prepared from a mixture of acid-catalyzed and base-catalyzed silica sols, and the up layer with refractive index of 1.17 was prepared from polypropylene oxide modified silica sol. It was found that the addition of polypropylene oxide into the sol significantly decreased the refractive index and increased the hydrophobicity of the AR coating. The obtained tri-wavelength AR coating gives very high transmittance of 99.7, 99.1 and 98.0 % at 351, 527 and 1,053 nm, simultaneously.
One-step sol–gel preparation of PDMS–silica ORMOSILs as environment-resistant and crack-free thick antireflective coatings

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)–silica ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) sols were prepared by a one-pot sol–gel process using tetraethyl orthosilicate as an inorganic precursor and hydroxyl-terminated PDMS as an organic modifier, and antireflective (AR) coatings were prepared with these sols by dip coating. It was found that the addition of PDMS to silica sols significantly increased the viscosity and the controllable viscosity range of the silica sols, affording us a simple route to prepare very thick AR coatings with controlled thickness by a single deposition step. The coated fused silica substrates retained very high transmission of up to 99.9% at a determined wavelength. The addition of PDMS to the silica sols improved the hydrophobicity and abrasion-resistance of the coating, and prevented to some extent the coating from cracking which occurred in a pure inorganic thick AR coating. The PDMS–silica ORMOSIL AR coatings are stable after standing for 2 months at room temperature in an environment of 95% relative humidity. The relationship between structure and properties of the coatings is discussed considering the particle growth mechanism.

Abstract:ZrO2 thin films were prepared by sol-gel technology from suitable zirconia aqueous colloidal suspensions containing nanocrystalline ZrO2 at room temperature synthesized by hydrothermal process from inorganic precursor (ZrOCl2. 8H(2)O). By adding a soluble organic binder PVP to the suspension prior to application, it substantially increased the coating refractive index and the abrasion-resistance as well as the laser damage threshold. The features of the coatings and the colloidal suspensions were investigated. Multilayer highly reflective dielectric coatings were also elaborated by laying down quarterwave-thick alternating coatings of the binder-aided zirconia and silica, which was prepared with the sol-gel process fi om TEOS. Laser damage thresholds of 20 and 18 J/cm(2) (1064nm, 1ns) were achieved for single ZrO2-PVP coating and ZrO2-PVP/SiO2 multilayers respectively.

Abstract:For the requirements of solar cell and laser system, we designed two kinds of broadband antireflective (AR) coatings prepared by sol-gel method using acid and base-catalyzed silica sols and acid-catalyzed titania sol. Titania film and acid-catalyzed silica film were employed as high and low refractive index layers separately based on lambda /4- lambda /2 optical thickness structure. Acid and base-catalyzed silica films were chosen as high and low-index layers separately based on lambda /4- lambda /4 structure. SiO2/TiO2 AR coating features an M-shape broadband transmission spectrum and presents a perfect scratch-resistant ability, which can meet the requirement of solar glass. SiO2/SiO2 AR coating features a flat broadband transmission spectrum and presents both water-repellency and scratch resistance, which is suitable for the laser disk amplifiers used in high power laser system. Post treatments are very important for realizing these functionalities. Heat treatment seriously impacts the refractive index of the TiO2 film that is decisive for the AR function, while ammonia and Trimethylchlorosilane treatments decide the water-repellency and scratch resistance of the SiO2/SiO2 system. All the films were deposited by dip coating method, which is applicable for large size substrate.

Abstract:Triple-layer broadband abrasion-resistant antireflective (AR) coatings with excellent transmittance at 400–800nm were designed with the aid of thin film design software (TFCalc™). SiO2, TiO2 and SiO2–TiO2 hybrid thin films with refractive indices of 1.44, 2.20 and 1.71 for the up, middle and bottom layers, were dip-coated from SiO2, TiO2 and SiO2–TiO2 hybrid sols by sol–gel process, respectively. SiO2 and TiO2 sols were prepared using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and tetrabutyl orthotitanate (TBOT) as precursors and hydrochloric acid as catalyst. These designed triple-layer broadband AR coatings with an average transmittance as high as 98.4% at visible region were successfully obtained. Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) was further used to modify the surface of the AR coatings, which greatly improved the hydrophobicity of the coatings, and thus gave the AR coatings some self-cleaning property. These triple-layer abrasion-resistant broadband AR coatings with excellent transmittance in the visible region have potential value in the field of solar cells.

Abstract:Having a deep insight into the organic–inorganic hybrid (OIH) and microstructure tailor mechanism of sol–gel ORMSOSIL antireflective (AR) coating is of great interest in the field of sol–gel science and technology. VTES/TEOS ORMOSIL sols were prepared via a sol–gel process by using vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as co-precursors. 29Si MAS NMR was applied to deduce the OIH mechanism between VTES and TEOS. The results of N2 adsorption–desorption analysis indicated that OIH could effectively tailor the pore structure. The OIH of VTES and TEOS significantly increased the porosity. With this convenient sol–gel process, the refractive index of VTES/TEOS ORMOSIL AR coatings could be regulated gradually between 1.12 and 1.21 by varying the VTES/TEOS molar ratio. The OIH mechanism and the drying process of these VTES/TEOS ORMOSIL AR coatings were proposed after a detailed discussion on the relationship between microstructure and optical properties.

Abstract:A three-layer tri-wavelength broadband antireflective (AR) coating with 100 % transmittance simultaneously at 1064, 532 and 355 nm was designed using TFCalc™ thin film design software. The refractive indices for the bottom, middle and top layers of the designed AR coating are 1.33, 1.21 and 1.10, respectively. To realize the designed AR coating, a template-free sol–gel process was proposed to regulate the refractive index of silica film from 1.09 to 1.44 by simple hybridization. Silica films with refractive index of 1.21–1.44 were prepared by the hybridization of acid-catalyzed silica and base-catalyzed silica, while organically modified silicates films with refractive index of 1.09–1.21 were prepared by the hybridization of tetraethoxysilane, methyltriethoxysilane and hexamethyldisilazane under base-catalyzed condition. These two hybridization methods could conveniently control the porosity, and hence the refractive index of films. Finally, the three-layer tri-wavelength broadband AR coating, which is very important in high-power laser systems, was realized with the transmittance of 99.9, 99.8 and 99.4 % at 1064, 532 and 355 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Mono-layer silica-based antireflective laser coating with modulated structure has been designed and fabricated, in which cross-linking network structure of polysiloxane was prepared as backbone and porous silica spheres (PSSs) were inserted to create interior porosity. Cured polysiloxane provided dense structure that could both prevent the invasion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and improve the mechanical property of this coating, while PSSs endowed this coating with proper porosity to adjust its refractive index and relax the high-power laser energy. With certain structure modulation, excellent transmission and laser-damage resistance of this coating at 355 nm (for the application in high-power laser system) and 1064 nm (for the application in laser-guided component) was both achieved. Meanwhile, the hardness of this coating increased significantly compared with that of the conventional porous silica coating. In addition, qualified VOCs endurance of this coating was also proved, which effectively extended the lifetime of such coating.

Abstract:Methyl-situ-modified silica sols were obtained by hydrolysis and co-condensation reactions occurred in base-catalyzed system by carefully controlling the sol-gel process of Methyltriethoxysilane(MTES) and Tetraethoxysilane(TEOS).Hydrophobic-antireflective silica film was then prepared by dipping-coating technique from the modified sols.As a result,the hydrophobicity of antireflective coating was highly improved.The properties of the films were characterized with atomic force microscope(AFM),ultraviolet-visible spectrum(UV-Vis) and contact angle analyzer measurement.An Nd:YAG laser(1 064 nm,1 ns) was used to irradiate the film by R on 1 method and the damage thresholds were measured.In addition,comparison was carried out between organically modified coating and pure silica coating.The results showed that the hydrophobicity and laser damage resistance of the coating were greatly improved by proper modification and high transmission was maintained.

Abstract:In this paper, colloidbased multilayer coatings consisting of alternating layers of highand lowrefractive index components were deposited on K9 glass and silicon wafer substrates by SolGel spincoating method. SiO2 was used as the lowrefractive index component and ZrO2 as the highrefractive index material. The colloidal suspension of ZrO2 was prepared by hydrothermal hydrolysis of ZrOCl2. The solvent in colloidal suspension of SiO2 was replaced by methoxyethanol through distillation. A highpressure mercury lamp was used to do the irradiation treatment. SEM, IR and UVVIS spectrophotometer were used to characterize the structure and optical properties of the films. Ellipssometry was used to study the thickness and refractive index of the films. The films were irradiated by a Qswitched Nd:YAG high power laser whose wavelength was 1064nm and its pulse width was 15ns.The results show that solventexchange and UVirradiation are effective methods to avoid the cracking in the multilayer films and the infiltrating between the layers and improve laser damage threshold of SolGel films. 

Abstract:Multilayer broadband antireflective (AR) coatings consisting of porous layers usually suffers poor functional durability. Based on a quarter-half-quarter multilayer structure, AR coatings with dense SiO2 film as the top layer are designed, and refractive index for each layer is optimized. After heat-treated at only 150 °C, refractive index of Nb2O5 film reaches to 2.072 (at 550 nm), which can meet design requirements of the middle layer. TiO2–SiO2 composites with controllable refractive indices are selected to be used as the bottom layer. The obtained triple-layer AR coating presents excellent performance, and the average transmittance at 400–800 nm attains 98.41%. Dense layers endow the multilayer structure good abrasion-resistance, and hexamethyldisilazane is further used to modify the surface of the AR coating, which can greatly improve the hydrophobicity of the coating. The proposed triple-layer broadband AR coating has potential value in practical applications of sol–gel deposition.

Abstract:Single-layer antireflective(AR)coatings with high transmittance have been designed by the thin film design software(TFCalcTM).The silica sols were prepared by using tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)and methyltriethoxysilane(MTES)as co-precursors,HCl as catalyst,and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)as template.The single-layer AR coatings with multi-functions were prepared by the dip-coating process combined with evaporation-induced self-assembly.It was found that the transmittance of AR coatings at 650 nm was 99.9%,and the photovoltaic transmittance(TPV)at 400-1 100 nm reached to 98.7%.The introduction of methyl groups increased the water contact angle of AR coatings from 24°to 85°.In addition,this AR coating also had good abrasion-resistance.This multi-functional silica AR coating with high transmittance,good abrasion-resistance and improved hydrophobicity will find important application in the field of solar cells.

Abstract:Silica-based sol-gel antireflective (AR) optical coatings are critical components for high peak power laser systems. It is well known that water vapor and volatile organic compounds in both the laser bay and target bay environments will reduce the antireflective efficiency and laser-damage resistance of the sol-gel AR coating. In this study, alkylation with organosilanes in the vapor state was investigated. Sol-gel AR coatings were vapor-phase treated with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) at room temperature, and the resulting post-treated sol-gel AR coatings were tested for their resistance to contamination by a series of volatile organic compounds. Contact angle measurements were taken to discern the degree of silanization. After the vapor treatment of sol-gel AR coatings with organosilanes, the spectral performance of the coatings were analyzed by spectrophotometer, both before and after the exposure to volatile organic compounds. It is found that the coatings treated with ammonia and HMDS show a better contamination resistant capability. After being contaminated 70 hours with hexane, the transmittance of the coatings presents no obvious decrease. And the vapor treatment produces an increase in their damage threshold at 1064 nm (10ns pulse width) as compared to untreated control samples.

Abstract:In this paper, colloid-based highly reflective coatings consisting of alternating layers of quarterwave thick high- and low-refractive index components were deposited on glass substrates by a sol–gel spin-coating method. SiO2 was used as the low-refractive index component, and ZrO2 as the high-refractive index material. The colloidal suspension of ZrO2, prepared by hydrothermal hydrolysis of ZrOCl2, contained monoclinic nanocrystalline ZrO2, with an average particle size of 15 nm. A minimum transmittance of 1% near 1064 nm was obtained from a 20-layer SiO2–ZrO2/PVP multilayer film. The ZrO2 particles were deposited in an ethanolic suspension containing polyvinylpyroldione (PVP) as a binder. The maximum transmittance in the visible range was about 85%. A 1-on-1 laser-induced damage threshold of 16 J/cm2 for the 20-layer SiO2–ZrO2/PVP film was observed using a Q-switched Nd:YAG high power laser at a wavelength of 1.06 μm and with a pulse width of 2.5 ns.
